Today’s Devotional: Darkness at the Cross

A Full Solar Eclipse

Have you ever experienced a full solar eclipse? In such an eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking out all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, with the moon completely blocking the sun creating total darkness for about two minutes and forty seconds (nasa.gov). The last time the U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 2017 and the one before was in 1979.

Darkness at Noon

The Bible tells us about another day where it was about noon and darkness covered the land until three in the afternoon because the sun stopped shining. (Luke 23:44-45a) On that day, Jesus Christ hung on a cross, bearing the sins of every person throughout all time. As he bore our sin, God could not look upon his own son as he suffered for you and for me. In that moment, God turned his back on his son.

As a mother with a 27 year old son, there is no way I could ever turn my back on my child and certainly not in his biggest moment of pain and suffering. Yet, God did turn his back on his only Son because he loves you and me enough that no matter what sin we may have committed in the past or currently are involved in, He wanted to have a relationship with us. Our sin, however, keeps us separated from Him because He is Holy.

Jesus willingly endured the torture of the cross and willingly gave His life to pay the penalty for our sins. He bore on himself all the darkness of our sin and God’s wrath for you and me. The Light of the World came to dispel the darkness of sin, death, and the grave so we can be free from their bondage.

The wages of sin is death and eternal darkness

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Our sin has consequences and there is a price to be paid for it. Just as you are paid a wage for the work you do each week, God has a paycheck to give you for the sins you commit and that paycheck is…death.

The darkness of sin entered the world in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve when they chose to disobey God and not trust in Him for their provision. Rather, they wanted control of their own life. They listened to the serpent. They wanted to be like God and do things their way. As a result, God told Adam, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat food until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19, NET)

Death is the consequence of sin. But not just physical death. There is also spiritual death in that when you physically die without accepting Jesus a your Savior, you experience eternal darkness, torment, and separation from God in Hell. God never sends a person to hell. Every person that ends up in hell chooses hell by rejecting Jesus. So, if you have not placed your faith in trust in Jesus – you are on your way to hell. But don’t panic yet!

Good News! There is an alternative to death and eternal darkness

There is good news! Jesus took payment we earned on himself in our place. Jesus’s death on the cross covered our sin debt, and because he died in our place, he offers us the gift of eternal life. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (HCSB). Eternal darkness or eternal life? Wages of sin or a free gift of life? We each must choose.

If I hold in my hand a beautifully wrapped present and extend my hand to you, how does the gift become yours? It is a gift, because you did nothing to earn it. And if you pay me for it, it ceases to become a gift. There is only one way the gift can become yours. You must reach out and accept it.

It’s your choice as to what you will do with the gift of eternal life; only you can make that choice. Infant baptism or any other kind of baptism can’t save you. Having a father who is preacher won’t get you out of going to hell. You can’t do enough good works to earn your way into heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) He is the way into heaven as we accept the truth about who He is and the truth of our sinfulness. When we accept His free gift, we then experience an abundant and eternal life in His presence in Heaven.

How do you receive the free gift of eternal life and escape death and eternal darkness?

How do you accept the free gift of eternal life? You must receive it by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith; and it’s not of yourselves: It is the gift of God: not of works, so nobody can boast.”

You begin by acknowledging that you have a sin problem. Romans 3:23 say, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That little word “all, “means you. It means me. It means every single person that has ever lived with the exception of Christ. Because Jesus lived a sinless life, only He was able to offer His life in place of ours.

Ephesians 2:1-3 says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.” Deserving of God’s wrath. Our problem is sin. What we deserve is the darkness of death.

Our problem is sin, but there is an answer

Like any other problem, there is an answer. Ephesians 2:4-10 gives the answer. “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

The Answer to our Sin Problem is Jesus

The answer to our sin problem is God’s grace extended to us through the death, burial and resurrection of his only son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 tells why God allowed Jesus to die for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God loves all of us. It doesn’t matter what color skin we have, what our past looks like or what our present life looks like. It doesn’t matter how “big” your sin is because we are the only ones that puts value on sin. To God, a little small sin as just as big as the worst sin you can think of.

Sin is sin and only one sin will keep you from eternal life. But because of his love and grace, he allowed his Son to take the punishment we deserve. The Bible says, “Christ died for our sins…and rose (from the dead) on the third day” (1 Corinthian 15:3,4). “But God showed His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) It also tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:21 that God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us so that we can be made righteous in the sight of God and this is what makes eternal life possible.

God’s Extravagant Gift Requires a Response

Just as the only way you could possess a wrapped present from me is to reach out and take it, there also has to be a response from you towards the gift that God offers you. You reach out and accept His gift of eternal life by acknowledging your sin, asking him to forgive you of your sin and placing your faith and trust in Christ alone. Acts16:31 tells us, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” In John 6:47, Jesus said, “Truthfully I say unto you, He that believes on Me has everlasting life.

For Christians, I hope the next time you experience an eclipse it will serve as a reminder to you of what it cost Christ for your gift of eternal life. For non-Christians, I hope you will think of this moment in time when the sun did not shine as Jesus hung on a cross in payment for your sin. As he hung in total darkness, separated from God, so you too are in spiritual darkness and separated from God. Jesus went to the cross so that you could have eternal life with God rather than everlasting separation from God.

You Can Receive God’s Free Gift Right Now

If you wish to accept the free gift of eternal life right now, you can simply pray the prayer below with a sincere heart and God will hear you.

“Dear Lord, I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. Right now, in this moment, I trust you as my Savior. I believe that you died for me and rose from the dead as payment for my sins. I accept your free gift of eternal life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, let us know in the comment sections or send us a note through the contact us page. Also, find a local evangelical church in your area and talk with the pastor and let him know of the decision you have made. He can then help you as you follow in obedience to God and grow as a Christian.

Having a father who is preacher won’t get you out of going to hell. You can’t do enough good works to earn your want into heaven.

Because Jesus lived a sinless life, He was able to offer His life in place of ours.

Matthew 2

Eternal Ramification of Sin

Sin – A Little Word with Big Ramifications

Sin. It’s just a small three-lettered word, but it has big eternal ramifications. God knew even before he created humans that they would sin.  He also knew that it would cost His only Son His life so that we could be reconciled and redeemed into a right relationship with Him.  Yet still, he created us with free-will. No one wants someone to love them because they were forced to or have no choice in the matter. That isn’t even love. God gifted us with freedom. Freedom to think. Freedom of conscience. And even freedom to disobey His commands. The choice is ours.

Before there was Sin

For a moment, go imagineering with me. In your mind, picture the perfect Garden of Eden. It’s peaceful there. Birds sing their song of praise to their creator. You have the perfect husband (not to mention, the only man around). The skies are blue, the trees are green. The temperature is perfect. There are no fears or anxiety of any kind. You don’t have to worry about bills or currency, because God has supplied you with everything you need.

When you sleep, the stars twinkle in the sky and there’s the relaxing sound of a waterfall that lulls you to sleep. Fruit and vegetables are in abundance and you can just walk right up and pluck off a big juicy apply or some grapes or strawberries, whenever you want. For pets, you have some horses, dogs, cats, birds, and even some hippos, rhinos, cheetahs, and a big cat you husband called a lion. By the lake, you play with the beavers. Down by the beach, a playful dolphin comes to see you every day. At the end of every day, God comes to walk and talk with you in the garden.

Life can’t get much better. Except….there’s that one tree over there. God said not to eat it. As Eve plops a grape in her mouth, the sun glistens off the fruit of the tree and it really looks good.

Enter “Serpent” Stage Right

I imagine that somewhere in the Garden a little serpent had been eyeing and watching this new creation of God’s – just waiting for the right moment. Maybe – just to be close to her – it endeared itself to her and allowed her to think it was a pet like all the other animals God has created. The serpent noticed how her eye lingered on the fruit. He watched as the thoughts flickered through her mind and he chose that moment to open his mouth and speak. Sin always begins in the mind where imagination and feelings make it seem pleasing for the moment.

A Talking Serpent?

Have you ever wondered how much time passed between the creation of Eve the moment that everything changes for man? If Eve was still rather new to the world, then her interaction with the serpent takes on a different look than if she had been around the Garden for a few years. No where in the creation account does it indicate that animals could talk – so why does the Bible not portray any fear or shock on Eve’s part that a serpent is talking to her? Did they have the ability to talk prior to God cursing them? If Eve was still new to the Garden, then maybe she didn’t know that animals aren’t supposed to go around talking. But, if she were still new – then where is Adam and why isn’t he watching out for her?

The Bible makes it seem as if Eve is not surprised in any way that a serpent is talking to her and it doesn’t tell us where Adam is during this encounter between Eve and the serpent. Just as the serpent watched and waited for the perfect moment with Eve, he also waited for a moment when Adam either wasn’t around or was distracted in some way.

Lessons from Eve’s Mistakes

Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we all live with a sin nature and there are consequences to our sin. But there are some things we can learn about how Satan tempts us so that we can recognize Satan at work and flee from temptation.

Looking at what she couldn’t have

Eve’s first mistake was standing around looking at that one thing she couldn’t have. If you’ve ever tried to diet, you know what I’m saying. Pizza never looks or smells better than when you’re trying to lose weight! There is something about not being able to have something that makes you want it – really want it.  When you notice you are craving something you shouldn’t have, its a good time to get up and walk away. But Eve hung out there by the tree – not satisfied with every other fruit and vegetable God had given. She wanted that one that was glistening in the sun and looked so very good to eat. In Genesis 3:6, Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes.

A Conversation with the serpent

Her second mistake was standing around having a conversation with the serpent. Satan tempted her further and told her it would make her wise…and it did. Wise to guilt, shame, and nakedness. Satan didn’t lie to her. He just didn’t tell her the negative side of the truth.

Temptation always works the same way

Down through the ages every temptation and every sin works the same way. There is an attraction to it, followed by a conflict of the mind where a decision has to be made. The decision to give in to the sin or to turn away and choose obedience to God. The end result of sin is that it always leaves us exposed. Exposed to suffering and sorrow, guilt and shame. Exposed to the consequences that follow. Sin leaves us exposed to broken relationships with others and with God.

James 1:14-15, explains the path to sin this way: “But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.” Every one of us face temptations every day. And temptation begins in the mind when Satan drops the bait. We are lured and enticed by the perfect bait: our own desires and we sniff out the bait of our desires and are instantly attracted to it. We nurture the desire, think about it, dwell on it. Then temptation gives birth to sin as we yield to the temptation and act on the desire as we fall into sin. Finally, Sin brings the consequences of our choices: spiritual death and separation from God.

The eternal ramification of sin is an eternity in hell. But there is hope! Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our hope was born in a stable and placed in a manger. He lived a sinless life and died on a cross to pay the price for our sins and then He rose from the dead, defeating Satan and becoming our Redeemer. Because of Jesus, we have hope.

Flee from temptation

When temptation comes calling, don’t stand around admiring it or having a conversation with it. Don’t make it your pet. Start quoting scripture and turn away from it. This is why memorizing Scripture is so important. In Paul’s description of the Armor of God, the Bible is our sword. So have your sword ready and sharpened by hiding it in your heart so you are able to use it at the moment of attack.

If your craving something that you are not supposed to have, start praising God for all He has given you and trust that in His omniscient wisdom, knowing He is a God who only gives good gifts, that He will supply your every need at just the right moment in time.

If you do fall into the trap of sin, be quick to repent and seek God’s forgiveness.

Sin always leaves you exposed. Obedience to God always leads to blessing.

Because God Is Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

The clear message of this passage is that we are to love one another and why we are to love one another. And the reason is simple…. because God is love. But let’s face it. Most human beings find it difficult to love the people we consider “unlovable.” Most of us love others that are close to us – our friends, family, and close friends. But what happens when they do something to wrong us or hurt us? Well, we typically stop loving them and move quickly to hating them. The truth of the matter is we love others on a conditional basis. When those conditions are broken, we chose to stop loving them.

The very unfortunate misconceptions about love

In some ways our misconceptions about love are not our fault. We can easily blame Disney and Hollywood for giving us how we have come to view this emotion. Disney gives us the fairytale love that ends with “and they lived happily ever after.” But when life isn’t happily ever after, we are heart broken and decide this isn’t love. So we dump that person and move on to the next, ever chasing the dream of “happily ever after.”

But then there’s Hollywood love, which isn’t love at all. It’s more appropriately named, “lust.” In this concept, love is based on attractiveness, sexual appeal and the like. Then when age sets in and the numbers on the scales go higher, the hair starts turning gray, the body starts sagging, well we “fall” out of love and trade the current “love” in for a younger, more attractive model.

Why we have such a hard time understanding love

If we truly want to experience and know love, then we have to recognize the order that is found in 1 John 4:7-8. It tells us that love is from God. So if we do not know nor experienced the unconditional love of God, there is no way we can truly love someone else. That’s what these verses tell us.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

When we jump down to verse 19, we find that we love because he first loved us. And in verse 11, it says, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” Why? Because love is from God. In other words, it originates and comes from God first. It does not originate in us.

God first loved us because God is love

Because God loved us first, we are then called to respond in love towards others. None of us are deserving of God’s love. We are all broken by sin. We all fall short of the glory of God. But yet despite or brokenness and sinfulness, God chooses to love us anyway. If we can truly grasp the enormity of God’s grace and love towards us, then the only right response is to extend the same grace and love to others. If we do, there there should be no racial divisions, murder, abuse, deceit, and the like. Because we do not do these types of behaviors towards those that we truly care about.

God’s Love Manifested

We celebrate Christmas because God’s love was manifested among us (verses 9 &10).  The word, “manifest” means to display or show a quality or feeling by one’s acts, to demonstrate, to show evidence or prove. So John, then, is saying, “Do you want to know what love is about?” And then he begins to explain it to us and his explanation is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas…because God sent his only Son into the world.

So then if we were to ask John today, “John, what is love?” He would explain it as, “Love is Christmas.” It is God sending his Son into this world to die for us and pay the price for our sin so that we can know God, have a relationship with God, and live with God for all eternity. Because we were lost in our sins and on the path for eternal death and separation from God, God chose to do the loving thing and sent Jesus so that we could live (verse 9).

Jesus’ purpose was established before His birth

As we look at the Christmas Story, we find that even before Mary gave birth, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-22). He accomplished his purpose when he died on the cross and rose again from the grave.

Jesus was the propitiation for our sins

1 John 4:10 tells us the God sent Jesus to be the propitiation for our sins. That is not really a word we throw around in our everyday vocabulary. So, what does it mean? Basically, it is a word that means “appeasing the wrath.” Because each one of us chose the path of sin at some point very early in life, God was angry with because of our sin. The wrath of his fury was on us.

Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. But when Jesus sacrificed his life in our place, God’s wrath was turned into peace. So now, when we place our faith in Christ, God is no longer angry with us. Instead, He delights in us. Our sins are forgiven because Jesus took upon himself the wrath of God that should have been ours. Propitiation, then, occurs when one’s anger has been turned into love. And that is what the cross does for us. It turns God’s wrath for our sin into love and grace. Because the payment for our sin was made by Jesus, we can then be forgiven of our sin. However, we must accept this propitiation as a free gift. It isn’t ours until we reach out accept the gift Jesus offers to us.

Love: It’s what Christmas is all about

True life comes through Jesus Christ. In fact, Jesus said that true life comes only through him. He said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). If you want ultimate life, it comes through Jesus. It comes through faith in him. There’s no other way. And because God loved us first, we have the greatest gift of love through Jesus.

That’s what Christmas is about.
