Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s memory verse:

Romans 12:1-2

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Meditate:

  1. Sacrifices are the language in the Old Testament associated with worshipping God. The animal sacrifices stood as a symbol of what Jesus would do on the cross in the new testament to provide forgiveness of sin
  2. When we present out bodies as a living sacrifice, we are giving him our all, just as the animal gave it’s all on the altar. However, we do not have to shed blood or die for sin as the animal did because Christ did the work for us on the cross. We die to self and our will and surrender to God’s will. God wants visible, lived-out, bodily evidence that our lives are built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
  3. God also wants us to be holy – which means to be clean and free from sin, every part of us. Our eyes, hands, tongue, feet. We should only use our bodies for righteousness – not sin.
  4. Acceptable – If our living sacrifice is holy, then it is acceptable to God. It is impossible for us to be holy and acceptable without the work of Christ applied to our lives. God is at the very heart of making us holy and acceptable. We cannot do it without His mercy and free gift of salvation.
  5. Our service to God required dedication of our total selves to living for God’s honor and glory.
  6. As Christians, we are to be different from the world and should experience a progressive transformation as we renew our mind through prayer, reading and meditating on God’s Word, worshipping God, and following the direction of the Holy Spirit as He works within us.

Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s memory verse:

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Meditate:

  1. When we work all week, our wages are received on payday in the form of a check our automatic deposit into our account. For students, the wages of their efforts in school is handed out on report card day or at the end of a college semester or with every grade they receive on a paper, project or test. Wages are what our actions earn us. As sinners, the wages of our sin is death and an eternity in Hell.
  2. In contrast, eternal life can only be received as a gift from God because He sent Jesus to pay the wages for our sin through His willing and sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection from the dead.
  3. If someone gives you a gift, what must you do to accept it? If it’s a gift, you can’t earn it by working for it. If you attempt to pay for it, it ceases to become a gift. The gift becomes yours when you reach out and accept it. There is nothing you can do to earn salvation. There are no deeds good enough, no acts of kindness good enough. Christ already did all the work as He lived a sinless life and died on the cross in your place. You can’t pay penance for salvation, Christ already paid the price through his shed blood as He gave His life in place of yours. Salvation is a gift and you must reach out by faith and accept it. Have you…or will you…accept the God’s free gift of salvation?

Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s memory verse:

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Meditate:

  1. Even when we were still lost in our sin and enemies with God, He still loved us enough that He sent His Son to die in our place so that we could be redeemed and have a relationship with Him.
  2. Jesus said in John 15:13, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.”
  3. God freely chooses to love us – even when we are unlovable – and by doing so, He confers worth on us through our faith in Him.
  4. Take time to thank God for His unfailing love.
  5. Take time to think about what Jesus endured as he went through being mocked, beaten, and nailed to a cross to die for your sins. Read John 18-20 in your Bible. Thank Jesus for paying your sin debt for you.

This week’s memory verse:

Psalm 18:1-3

I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Acts 15:1 Conflict over Circumcision

Jul 08 Acts 15 1

After Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch, they reported to the church on what God had been doing in Asia, especially in the Gentiles coming to faith in Christ. While they were there, some men from Judea came to Antioch and wanted to add to the requirements of salvation saying that the Gentiles couldn’t really be saved if they did not follow the practice of circumcision that God gave to Moses. A debate ensued between Paul and these Judeans that ended with them sending Paul to Jerusalem for clarification. Jerusalem, at this time, was still the center of the Christian movement and the apostles and elders where there.

Paul brought his case to the Jerusalem Council. Given that Christianity has its roots in Jewish history and customs, it is understandable that the church had to grapple with this issue as it transitioned from Old Testament Covenant to the New Testament Covenant. After “much dispute,” Peter stood up and presented the Council with four truths:

  1. God had chosen him to proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles (10:1-43).
  2. The Gentiles had believed Peter’s message and placed their faith in Jesus
  3. When the Gentiles believed, they received the Holy Spirit (10:44-46).
  4. The pattern of Gentile conversion was the same as for Jewish believers. God was making no ethnic distinctions in the building of the church.

Peter told them that based on these four things, the believing Pharisees were testing God and putting a burden on the Gentile converts that which the Jewish fathers or the Jews of their day could bear. Since it is impossible to perfectly keep the law, Peter insisted that salvation is only through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ as a free gift – no strings attached.  Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me.” Rituals such as circumcision, baptism, partaking of the Lord’s Supper, or any good works cannot save anyone. It is only by placing our faith in God’s gracious sacrifice of Jesus that we become a Christian.

Salvation is only through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ as a free gift – no strings attached. (Eph 2:8-9, John 14:6) Rituals such as circumcision, baptism, Lord’s Supper or any good works cannot save anyone. — click to tweet
