A stolen heart

Remember when your heart was stolen?

What was it about your spouse that “stole your heart?” Was it a gradual wooing or an instantaneous moment? For King Solomon and his bride, it was just a glance of her eyes at him. Most likely there is a silent look between you and your spouse that speaks volumes of your love for him or her.

When I read this verse in Song of Solomon, I often thing of the moment a groom first sees his bride coming towards him at their wedding ceremony. Recently, my nephew was married. Now, Blake is in the Air Force and stationed overseas. This wedding was supposed to happen back in the spring, but because of COVID, the military would not let him back into the states.

When they did grant him leave, he couldn’t come to our home state of Florida. They allowed him to go to Georgia, so the wedding plans were altered and we took everything to Georgia. A church there was kind enough to allow us to use their building and for Blake and Eileen’s pastor to come and perform the ceremony. Blake had not seen Eileen in quite some time until the day before the wedding and when he saw Eileen walking towards him, his whole very serious military face lit up and he broke out in a big smile. Eileen stole Blake’s heart long before this moment – but in this moment it was very clear that Blake’s heart was completely and thoroughly stolen.

Is your heart still stolen?

My prayer for Blake and Eileen is that their hearts continue to be stolen. But in marriage we often have to be actively involved in our relationship as we carefully cultivate our love for one another. Too often, over time, the routine of life, the addition of kids, the stress of careers and finances all work against marriage and end up coming between us. So my question to you today is, “Is your heart still stolen?”

Work to keep your stolen heart

Once you’ve stolen your spouse’s heart, they expect you to honor it, protect it, nurture it, and treasure it. There is a part of stealing one’s heart that has nothing to do with you and everything with them giving it away to you. If they do not choose to give it to you or allow you to steal it, then their love is not returned. You should view your spouse’s heart as his or her most precious treasures they have placed into your care.

If you do not take care of it, they will become hurt, angry, disappointed and eventually take their broken heart back. So you must work to keep the heart you stole. Date often. Listen. Forgive. Extend grace. Compromise. Keep communication open. Take time to personally reflect to what you are contributing or not contributing to your marriage. Pray for one another and pray together. Study the Bible to know what God has to say about marriage and follow God’s principles for marriage. Fan the flames of romance. And create a network of other Christian couples that will encourage you, pray for you, and hold you accountable.

When was the last time that just a glance of your spouse’s eyes stole your heart? If it’s been a while, then it might be time to give some attention to your marriage.

Julia enjoys sharing her journey as a growing Christian with others looking for a deeper connection with God. Through Bible study and her own life experiences, God has given Julia a passion to help couples understand God’s design for marriage while they learn to place God first in their marriage, cultivate meaningful relationships, build intimacy, and address the tougher issues that come in every marriage so that they can experience a marriage that honors and glorifies God. Julia also loves mentoring, teaching, and working with women to help them learn to live as Godly women.

With her history and experience growing up in both small and large churches, Julia enjoys bringing top level quality events to churches of all sizes. Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with.
