Journey through Habakkuk

Questions and Answers (1:1-2:5) – Part 4

Note: We encourage you to click the link above and read the section in Habakkuk this post will discuss prior to reading the post.

As we wrap up this section of Habakkuk, we have learned that the prophet had some hard questions for God and God had some even harder answers for Habakkuk. God’s answers raised some theological questions in Habakkuk’s mind so that he had difficulty reconciling God’s character with God’s plan. Now, today, we will find that God reassures Habakkuk.

God Gives Assurance to Habakkuk (2:2-5)

While it is not known how much time passes between 2:1 and 2:2, God does respond to Habakkuk and tells him to legibly write down His message that will become a witness to what God decrees. God has already told Habakkuk that the preceding events will take place during Habakkuk’s lifetime. But in 2:3, God says the things He will reveal next may not be fulfilled right away, (Babylon will not fall to the Persians until 538 B.C. and may not have been in Habakkuk’s lifetime) so Habakkuk is to wait patiently and that what is to come will not arrive late.

Habakkuk is to be Patient and Trust God’s Timing

Part of Habakkuk’s complaint is that God has been silent and has not noticed the social injustices that were happening. Therefore, 2:3 may serve as an answer to Habakkuk’s complaint because the problem did not lie with God, but with Habakkuk’s lack of patience. [1] God is going to give the prophet a vision of what will occur in the future, but those events will happen in God’s timing–not Habakkuk’s, so Habakkuk will have to be patient. However, while he waited, he was to live a life of faithfulness[2]

The Wicked vs. Righteous

In verse 4, God gives a contrast of the one who is not upright and the person of integrity. The [3] They were arrogant with inflated egos and had no regard for humanity. They lacked integrity and were known as crooked people. However, their pride would eventually lead to their demise. James 4:6 says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble (HCSB).

The Righteous live by faith

In contrast, the righteous will live by faith.

The righteous person is the one who lives up to the standards of a particular relationship demands. In terms of the righteous person’s relationship with God, he or she must live according to the stipulations of the covenant. To put it in a nutshell, one’s relationship with God demands loyalty (love) to him, and one’s relationship with one’s fellow human beings demands the kind of behaviour that will be to the benefit of others and/or to society at large, which boils down to love for one’s neighbour.”[4]

[5] Because the wicked trust in their own power, they would die. The righteous, on the other hand, place their trust in God and find life. One can easily see the doctrine of salvation in this verse. However, Habakkuk may have had a dual purpose in that he wanted to reassure the faithful people in his day that God would spare their lives with the Babylonian army arrived.

Babylonians are Drunk on the Wine of God’s Wrath

Verse 5 serves as a contrast to the one who lives by faith and describes the Babylonians who are drunk on their own greed, pride, and arrogance. Barker writes in the New American Commentary, “Like death and the grave (Sheol), the Babylonians never have enough. Sheol often is pictured as being greedy, always enlarging itself to receive more of the dead.”[6] God, therefore, declares that the wicked will become drunk on the wine of His wrath and He pronounces five woes against these tyrants.

Journey through Habakkuk

Questions and Answers (1:1-2:5) – Part 3

Note: We encourage you to click the link above and read the section in Habakkuk this post will discuss prior to reading the post.

Yesterday we found God’s answers to Habakkuk’s questions were not the wanted or expected answers. Today, we will see Habakkuk’s concerns with God’s plans for Judah

Habakkuk’s Concerns with God’s Plans (1:12-2:1)

Even though Habakkuk called on God to do something about the violence and wickedness in Judah, he cannot be happy with God’s plans. Instead of being satisfied or finding feelings of justice and satisfaction, he is even more confused regarding the tension between God’s actions and His character. After all, how can God, who is pure and holy, chose a sinful, idolatress nation as His divine instrument of judgment? Habakkuk asks God why He puts up with such treacherous people and why does God say nothing when the wicked devour the righteous?

Habakkuk cannot Reconcile God’s Character with God’s Plan

Habakkuk cannot come to terms with God’s plan aligning with God’s character. So, Habakkuk appeals to God’s character. He acknowledges that Babylon is God’s instrument of judgment, and that God cannot tolerate evil nor condone wrongdoing. But God has been active from ancient times. He is sovereign, holy, and immortal. He is God from all eternity. Because God is holy, He does not just hate sin but He is completely repulsed by the very sight of it. Thus, Habakkuk is once again confused. How can a God who so intensely hates sin tolerate and allow it while at the same time remain silent while the righteous are being persecuted by the wicked?

Habakkuk Reminds God of the Sins of Babylon

Habakkuk then begins to point out the sins of Babylon in verse 15. He says they are tyrants who will pull them all up with a fishhook and hauls some off into captivity while others will experience death. Habakkuk uses the imagery of fishing equipment to convey his questions to God. Specifically, he tells God that Babylon will catch them all in his dragnet. The [1]

Habakkuk sees his people as helpless fish before the Babylonian army and the fishhooks and dragnets represent the military machinery the Babylonians will use to capture them. Then, rather than giving God the glory for their success, they will burn incense and worship their own success and military might. So why would God use this nation for his purposes?

Habakkuk Remained Faithful Even thought He is Confused

Yet still, the reader sees Habakkuk’s faithfulness even considering his confusion. He may not understand, but he trusts in God – and God alone.

Habakkuk then braces himself for God’s response. He will stand at his post on the city wall like sentinel, watching the horizon for the approaching Babylonian army as he readies himself to hear what God will say next because God’s first answer was a wisdom problem for Habakkuk. He could not reconcile his theology of God with the plans of God. Whatever God’s greater purpose in His plans was, Habakkuk could not fathom. Due to a lack of insight into the ways of God, Habakkuk is struggling and only God can explain it, so he says, “I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the lookout tower. I will watch to see what He will say to me and what I should reply about my complaint (HCSB).” Redmond writes,

Habakkuk Remained Faithful Even through the Waiting

It is both symbolic and significant that the prophet is in the watchtower waiting for the Lord to come to him again. The tower was a place of watching and waiting. In Ezekiel 3:17 the Lord says to the prophet Ezekiel, “Son of man, I have made you a watchman over the house of Israel. When you hear a word from My mouth, give them a warning from Me.” So, the responsibility of the watchman was to warn God’s people whenever the Lord warned him.[2]

As we reflect on Habakkuk and his faithfulness, can we say that we remain faithful when God seems to not make sense, or when He seems silent? Are we faithful to Him when we are waiting for Him to respond to our needs? The Psalmist writes:

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry for help. The face of the Lord is set against those who do what is evil, to erase all memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is near the brokenhearted; He saves those crushed in spirit. Many adversities come to the one who is righteous, but the Lord delivers him from them all (Psalm 34:15-19, HCSB).

Journey through Habakkuk

Questions and Answers (1:1-2:5) – Part 2

Note: We encourage you to click the link above and read the section in Habakkuk this post will discuss prior to reading the post.

Yesterday we looked at the questions Habakkuk asked God concerning the the violence and injustice that was occurring in Habakkuk’s day. Today we will find out God’s answer – an answer Habakkuk would not want to know.

God’s Answer (1:5-11)

While it may have seemed to Habakkuk that God was not paying any attention to what was going on in His created world, God’s answer proves otherwise – and it is an answer that Habakkuk did not want to hear.

God not only saw everything that was happening, but He is getting ready to step in and act in such a way that Habakkuk and the people of Judah will be shocked and stunned. God tells the prophet to look and pay attention. Violence and evil do not happen just in Judah. God gives Habakkuk a widened view and shows him the scene of another nation – Babylon, a ruthless and greedy nation, about to rise to power.

Babylon – A Nation Bent on World Conquest

Miller writes in the https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?event=AFF&p=1200059&item_no=94782">Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, & Malachi: Holman Old Testament Commentary [HOTC]Holman Commentary that “Nabopolassar had defeated Nineveh in 612 B.C. and had quickly solidified his empire. The Babylonians were hungry for prey and would soon be at the gates of Jerusalem.”[1] In Handbook on the Prophets, Chisholm describes Babylon as a nation “bent on world conquest. They struck fear into the hearts of other nations, for they were subject to no law but their own. They moved swiftly and swept down on their victims like a vulture. Babylon scoffed at those who attempted to resist them.”[2] He further states that such a nation was an appropriate instrument of God’s divine judgment against Judah who was guilty of violently oppressing their own countrymen and ignored God’s law.[3]

Babylon – A Nation that is Ruthless and Greedy

In verses 6-11, God shows Habakkuk what this violent and preying nation was like. They are ruthless and greedy, seizing dwellings that do not belong to them. They are frightening and terrifying, deciding for themselves what is right. Their horses are faster than leopards and more alert than wolves. They intend to do violence, take prisoners, mock kings and laugh at rulers and fortified cities. In other words, this nation that God would use to punish Judah was more evil, more violent, than Judah was. Judah was guilty of the violence they committed against their own people and now it was time that they reaped what they had sown. https://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?event=AFF&p=1200059&item_no=868701">Habakkuk: Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary [THOTC]Thomas writes in his commentary:

Where Habakkuk complains that God has made him ‘look upon’ iniquity and calls upon God to ‘observe’ violence in v. 3, God responds by calling Habakkuk in v. 5 to ‘look and consider’ what he is doing. Habakkuk complains of a lack of ‘justice’ and the perpetuation of ‘violence’ in vv. 2-4, to which God responds by expounding upon his work of raising up the Babylonians, who nonetheless are bound by their own vision of ‘justice’ in v. 7 and who come forth set on ‘violence in v. 9.”[4]

God’s Was Done with Warning – Judgment Is Coming

In Deuteronomy 28:49, God warned His people that if they turned away from Him, He would send a nation to judge them. That time had come. It was imminent. God would no longer delay. His judgement would take place in Habakkuk’s lifetime, and they were coming with the intent to do violent acts of a bigger evil than was currently happening in Judah.

God Also Give Habakkuk Hope

However, God also has a word of hope for the prophet as He tells him that the one who considers himself a god will be held guilty. To the Babylonians, their power was their god and therefore, they were guilty of idolatry as well as the violence they heaped on other nations. The Babylonians may be God’s chosen instrument for the punishment He will bring to Judah, but the day will come when Babylon will also be found guilty, and they will face God’s judgement too. God tells Habakkuk that Babylon will sweep by like the wind and pass on. They will rule over Judah for a time, but their end will come because God will find them guilty of violence and idolatry. While their power is great, it will be fleeting.

Journey through Habakkuk

Questions and Answers (1:1-2:5) – Part 1

Note: We encourage you to click the link above and read the section in Habakkuk this post will discuss prior to reading the post.

The first part of Habakkuk comprises a series of questions from Habakkuk followed by God’s answers, which are not the answers that Habakkuk wanted to hear. However, God’s answers fulfill the curses that God warned would come if His chosen people broke the covenant oath that was made between them and God before they crossed the Jordan and went into the Promised Land. (See Deuteronomy 27-28.)

Then in Deuteronomy 29, the people renewed their covenant with God– after knowing what curses would come if they broke the covenant. And in Deuteronomy 29: 24, it is predicted that when all the calamities of the curses fall on the people, they would cry out and ask, “All the nations will ask, ‘Why has the Lord done this to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?’” Yet, the people already would know why. Deuteronomy 29:25 tell us, “Then people will answer, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which He had made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.’

Now, we find Habakkuk seeking the answers to the questions that Deuteronomy told us the people would ask.

The Superscription: The Oracle of Habakkuk (1:1)

The first verse informs the reader that the book is the oracle that the prophet Habakkuk saw. The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary defines oracles as “Communications from God. This term refers to both divine responses to a question asked of God and to pronouncements made by God without His being asked.”[1] While oracles could refer to a prophecy that would occur in the future, they could involve a decision to be made in the present. Snyman adds in Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah: An Introduction and Commentary, “The noun also has the notion of ‘burden’ or ‘load’, suggesting that the oracle is a kind of a burden upon the prophet that must be delivered. The noun can also be rendered as ‘message’, ‘announcement’ or ‘proclamation.’”[2]

Since Habakkuk states that it is the oracle he “saw,” it is generally believed that this oracle was a vision that Habakkuk had. As such, the reader can determine that this oracle was a message received by Habakkuk as God’s revelation to him and should be read as a divine revelation. Miller explains, “The term may indicate seeing with the physical eyes, perceiving, or seeing prophetically— either a literal vision or a prophetic revelation. Here the latter is the idea. God opened Habakkuk’s spiritual eyes to receive a divine message… Habakkuk was a spiritually perceptive person who was in tune with God. For this reason God chose him to receive a message to share with his countrymen.”[3]

Habakkuk’s First Question

First, Habakkuk wants to understand how God could remain silent as His people live in wickedness and sin and why does God not punish the wicked? In verses 2-3, the prophet cries out: “How long, Lord, must I call for help and You do not listen or cry out to You about violence and You do not save? Why do You force me to look at injustice? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Oppression and violence are right in front of me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates“(HCSB). Perhaps you have even cried out similar cries to the Lord in our day. However, one must be careful about what one asks for.

God replies to Habakkuk’s question by showing him what is coming for Judah, and it will be more than Habakkuk could possibly think or image as the even more wicked Babylonians arrive on the scene to punish Judah. Listen to God’s response to Habakkuk in verses 5-11:

Look at the nations and observe—be utterly astounded! for something is taking place in your days that you will not believe when you hear about it. Look! I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter, impetuous nation that marches across the earth’s open spaces to seize territories not its own. They are fierce and terrifying; their views of justice and sovereignty stem from themselves. Their horses are swifter than leopards and more fierce than wolves of the night. Their horsemen charge ahead; their horsemen come from distant lands. They fly like an eagle, swooping to devour. All of them come to do violence; their faces are set in determination. They gather prisoners like sand. They mock kings, and rulers are a joke to them. And they laugh at every fortress and build siege ramps to capture it. Then they sweep by like the wind and pass through. They are guilty; their strength is their god (HCSB).

Habakkuk Complains to God (1:2-4)

Habakkuk begins his conversation with God with two questions: How long before God will answer his cries for help and why does God not deliver him from violence? The prophet cries out for help from the sovereign and righteous God, but help does not come, and it does not look like relief is coming any time soon. Snyman explains in Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah: An Introduction and Commentary, “The questions imply that the intolerable situation the prophet describes has been going on for a considerable period of time. On more than one occasion in the past the prophet called to the Lord, but apparently to no avail.”[4] Now the prophet cries out in a sense of urgency that expresses an intensity of dire need.

Habakkuk Complains because God is Silent

As a Levitical priest, Habakkuk would have been able to recall how in times past, God had rescued the innocent from the hands of wicked people and nations. For example, when they were slaves in Egypt, God heard their cry and miraculously rescued them. However now, in Habakkuk’s day, God is silent. So, the prophet also wants to know how long he will have to cry out for God’s help.

Miller notes in Holman Old Testament Commentary, “How long, a phrase that occurs sixty-five times in the Bible, often expresses anguish over God’s perceived delay in bringing justice.”[5]

Thomas writes in Habakkuk: Two Horizons Old Testament Commentary, “Questions like these [“how long” and “why”] in the Old Testament quite often carry with them a rhetorical purpose— they are used to draw God’s attention to the situation so that he might respond out of his goodness.”[6]

Habakkuk’s Frustration and Confusion

From Habakkuk’s questions, the reader can sense the prophet’s frustration and confusion in these questions that are asked of the same God who had previously delivered His people from the Egyptians but is now silent. His questions stem from wondering if God even cares that His people were being mistreated and the wicked were prospering and the nation was overrun with crime. Miller states, “The Hebrew word rendered violence (chamas) may refer to injurious language or harsh treatment but is used specifically of physical violence. Godly people were being harmed by these thugs, and yet God had not intervened to save them.”[7]

Habakkuk Complains because He Witnesses Injustice and God Does Not Stop It

These two questions are followed by two others: Why do you force me to witness injustice and why do you put up with such wrongdoing? The questions imply that God sees exactly what is going on and God does nothing about it. In verse 3 alone, Habakkuk uses six words that described the society in which the prophet lived – injustice, wrongdoing, destruction, violence, conflict, and strife – a society that experiences suffering due to mistreatment. Kaiser points out, “Five times in this brief book Habakkuk decries the overwhelming presence of violence (1:2,3,9; 2:8,17). Noah used the same word to describe the society in his day, which God found necessary to destroy with the flood (Gen. 6:11). The violence was the manifestation of the meaner, baser, and more selfish instincts of the haughty persons against the weaker elements of their culture.”[8]

Habakkuk Concludes that because God does not take action, the Law Lacks Power

Verse 4 begins with “therefore” or “For this reason,” which implies that Habakkuk has made a conclusion and he moves with audacity to complain to God that because of God’s inaction, the law lacks power, justice is never carried out, the wicked intimidate the innocent, and justice is perverted. Thomas states that this does not mean that the law is ineffective but that because of the rebelliousness of God’s people, they refuse to follow the law. He writes:

God’s law was never intended to change the hearts of God’s people, so of course it was impotent to effect such change… Faith is secured not by law but by hearts that are changed by a gracious and loving God, but a God who first loved and who gave the torah as a gift. In this way, God’s law cannot be called a failed project. Rather, hearts of men and women who reject God’s torah are the real problem, which is Habakkuk’s point. [9]

Chisholm uses the term “paralyzed” to explain the powerlessness of the law. He writes, “He pictured the law as “paralyzed.” The term translated “paralyzed” is used elsewhere of a heart or hand growing numb (see Gen.45:26; Ps 77:2). When this happens the affected body part cannot function normally. In the same way, the laws God had established to govern the socioeconomic life of the covenant community were being ignored, causing the law to be incapacitated.”[10]

Habakkuk Feels God is Absent and Unobservant

However, Habakkuk’s issue is not only the violence, destruction, and the powerless law, but that God seems to be absent and unobservant to the violence and the plight of those who suffer because of it. Synman writes, “yhwh is known to be the God of justice, so in the apparent absence of justice, a serious theological question arises: where is hywh, the God of justice?”[11]

Come back tomorrow to hear God’s answer – a answer Habakkuk would not want to hear.
