Man of God

As for me and my house

As Joshua stepped into the shoes of Moses to lead the nation of Israel, he recognized that the nation had a problem. That problem was wanting to be like everyone else. Their problem was clinging to Egypt. Their problem was having other gods before the God. And in Joshua 24:15, Joshua stands before the people and says “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” He not only led his household to serve the Lord, but as man of God, he called his nation to serve the Lord.

A man of God

Joshua was a man of God, hand-picked by God to lead Israel into the promised land. Why was Joshua chosen? Because he chose to lead himself and his household to serve the Lord. He was a spiritual leader to his family. He recognized the God-given responsibility to lead his home to worship God. Joshua understood that the idols from the other nations were nothing more than stone or wood carvings made by the hands of man. They did not have life or breath. But our God is a living God who desires to have relationship with the people whom He created. He is the God who created the universe with just a few spoken words. He is the God who holds the universe in order. And Joshua acknowledged God as his God. He was a man of God.

A Man of God is different than the world

Being a man (or woman) of God means we are different than the world. We don’t want the same things the world does. Paul wrote to the church in Rome, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

A Man of God is set apart from the world

As a man or woman of God we have been set apart. Psalm 4:3 says, “But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself.” What are we set apart for? To serve God and glorify Him. We are set apart from the world as God consecrates us, makes us holy, prepares us for His work, sanctifies us, and purifies us.

A Man of God is sanctified

Another word for “set apart” is “sanctified. Synonyms for sanctified are holyconsecrated, and hallowed. Jesus spoke of Himself as being sanctified in John 17:19; in other words, He is holy and “set apart” from sin. His followers are to be similarly set apart from sin and for God’s use (see 1 Peter 1:16). People who are sanctified are born again and therefore part of God’s family (Hebrews 2:11). They are reserved for God’s use. A sanctified, set apart person knows “the sanctifying work of the Spirit” in their lives (1 Peter 1:2). They abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3). They understand they have been “called to be his holy people” (1 Corinthians 1:2).

A Man of God bears God’s image – not the world’s image

As a man or woman of God, we are to bear the image of God so that the world will see God in us and be led to Him. We cannot conform to the world and be a man or woman of God. We must allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from our old, sinful, worldly self into a new creation that is holy, righteous, and set apart by God, for God’s perfect will. So as a man or woman of God, we bear His image. We cannot be a man or woman of God if we look like the world.

A Man of God is leaves the former things behind him

Being a man or woman of God means that we leave the former things behind us. All the ways of the world that were a part of us before becoming a child of God should not continue to be part of our life as a child of God. When Israel left Egypt, they had been in Egypt about 430 years. They had become enmeshed with the culture and society of Egypt, including the gods worship by the Egyptians. But God called them out of Egypt, to leave their former ways behind them and to be His chosen people.

Many of us have problems with change, and clearly Israel did too. Despite all the wonders and miracles God did to bring them out of bondage and slavery, they still tried to cling to the life they knew in Egypt. Let’s face it; setting out to a new life and new land where you don’t exactly know where it is can be unsettling. Even though they were slaves, they knew that life. What we know can become comfortable, even if it isn’t what we desire. But God calls us to leave our old way of life behind us and step into His way that brings eternal life.

A Man of God exchanges his idols for the living God

The same was true about their beliefs in God. The God of Abraham had somehow become forgotten and traded for the gods of Egypt and Israel had a hard time letting go of worshiping idols and give their hearts totally to the God. We can become guilty of having idols too. We make idols out of relationships, careers, hobbies, money, possessions, and much more. Whatever becomes more important to us than our relationship with God becomes an idol. So we need to allow the Holy Spirit to convict us of any area in our lives that we have given a higher priority to than God and confess it and then place God back as our highest priority.

A Man of God fears God

Fearing God is a reverential fear. It is a sense of honor and respect. Fearing God includes trusting Him, even in difficult times or when we can’t see God at work in our lives. Obedience and complete submission to God is also required in the person that fear God. The person who fears God is more likely to keep their word, which makes him or her trustworthy to others. And the person who fears God loves God with all of his/her heart, mind, soul, and strength. He/She also, then, loves his neighbor as himself. The Spiritual leader leads his home to know and fear God through family worship and prayer. He models what “fearing God” means and lives it out as an example for his wife and children.

A Man of God serves God faithfully

If you consider yourself a man of God, then how do you serve Him? Are you actively involved in your local church body, faithfully attending and serving God? Are you ensuring that your family is in church and participating in the ministries of the church?

If you are a child of God, then God has a specific plan for you to serve Him. You have been uniquely created with gifts and talents to do exactly what God wants you to do. Do you know how He wants you to serve Him? If not, you need to discover that and get busy faithfully serving God before you expect your family to faithfully serve God.

A Man of God serves God with all of his heart

How do you feel when Sunday rolls around? Is going to church an obligation or do you look forward with eager anticipation to worship God with other believers and go with a heart prepared to heard a word from God? When the church is seeking someone to fill a ministry position, are you eager to volunteer if you feel God leading you to?

If we all did so, then there would be no ministry holes within our churches. God places each one of us within the body for a specific cause. When we do not step into the task God has for us, it creates a hole within the church’s ministry. When we step into roles that are not ours to fill, we rob another person of fulfilling their God-given task. Yet, whenever we serve, we need to remember that God knows the motivation of our heart. Do we serve out of duty? For the recognition? Or for a heart that serves God out of love and worship?

A Man of God serves God considers the great things God has done for him

Whenever we don’t take the time to consider all the wonderful things God does for us, we can begin to forget them. Then when difficult times comes we become focused on the problem rather than all the times God has been faithful to us before. As a spiritual leader in your home, you should openly acknowledge the great things God does in your life and in your family. As you do, you teach your children to recognize God at work. Then be sure to lead your family to thank and praise God for all that He does for you.

A Man of God is a Spiritual Leader in His Home

A man of God is a spiritual leader in his home, just as Joshua was. Joshua didn’t just decide for himself to serve the Lord, he determined that he and his household would serve the Lord. As a spiritual leader and man of God in your home, you should lead by example as you model, fearing God, serving Him faithfully, and considering the great things God has done for you and your family. Then lead them to worship and thank God for all that He does in each of your lives and in your family.

As a spiritual leader, the man of God fears God, serves God faithfully, and considers the great things God has done. He models this lifestyle for his family and leads them to worship and thank God for what He does for them. — Julia Bruce

Our Newest Download! The Path to Sin Worksheet

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. Download the worksheet today.

A Picture of a Devout Man

Cornelius – A Devout man

In Acts 10, we find a picture of a man whom the Bible defines as a “devout man.” But this man wasn’t one a Jesus’ 12 disciples. In fact, he wasn’t even a Jew. Cornelius was a centurion in the Roman army. He lived at Caesarea. But this was a man who worshiped the one true God. While Roman soldiers had a reputation of extortion and brutalization of the local population, Cornelius treated the Jewish people with kindness and generosity.

Back at the very end of chapter 8 of Acts, we learn that Philip preached in all the cities until he came to Caesarea. So Christianity had already begun its spread to this area prior to us meeting Cornelius. Here in Acts 10, we find Cornelius is described as a devout man and we get a summary description of five things that tells us what a “devout man” looks like.

Defining “devout”

The word devout means, “having or showing deep religious feeling or commitment; total commitment to a cause or belief.” When the Bible says a person is devout, that person is careful to fulfill religious duties. This isn’t a person that is half-hearted in their faith. They aren’t the person that shows up at church just on Easter and Christmas. It isn’t even the person that shows up at church every Sunday morning. To be devout in our faith means we are “all in.” So Cornelius respected Jewish beliefs and customs, including the food laws and special days.

Five Characteristics of a Devout Man

1. A Devout Man Fears God

Fearing the Lord means to be in awe of his holiness, to give him complete reverence and to honor him in majesty, purity and power. We must acknowledge that God is merciful, loving, and kind. But He is also pure, holy, and just. Because He is pure, holy, and just, He will judge sin. Because He is merciful, loving, and king, He forgives our sins when we seek His forgiveness.

What Fearing God for the lost person is like:

A person lost in their sin has every right to fear the judgment of God. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death — eternal death. That’s the cost of dying physically without coming to faith in Christ who paid our sin debt for us. So the lost person who dies can expect to receive the wages they earned – eternal death in hell.

What Fearing God for the saved person is like:

However, for a person who has repented of sin and asked Jesus to forgive them, cleanse them, and invites Him to be their Savior, the fear of God has a very different meaning. For the believer, fear of God is having a reverence of God. Hebrews 12:28-29 says, “Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ’God is a consuming fire.”

Deuteronomy 10 gives more details about what fearing God means and how we live out “fearing God” in our lives. Verses 12-13 says, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?”

Jumping to verse 17, it says, “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” And then in verses 20-21, we read, “You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name. He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen.” This is exactly what fearing God means for Christians.

Difference in being afraid of God and fearing God’s discipline:

When the Bible talks about fearing God, it includes reverence and respect, but we must also have an understanding of how much God hates sin and therefore have a fear of the judgment that sin brings when we die without surrendering our hearts to Jesus. Hell is real and every lost person should be terrified of an eternity spent there.

A Christian who sins can also expect God’s discipline. Just as a loving parent disciplines a child in love, so God will discipline His children. Discipline is meant to instruct, train, and teach. It is for guiding a person in the way they should live. Discipline isn’t fun, but it shapes us more into the image of Christ. But for the Christian, we do not have to be afraid because God disciplines out of His love and mercy. We also do not have to fear eternity being separated from God because we have the promise from God that nothing can separate us from His love and that He will never leave us or forsake us. So for the Christian, fearing God is respecting, obeying, submitting to God’s will, and worshiping the God of gods and Lord of lords who is mighty and awesome.

2. Cornelius’ entire household feared God.

In today’s words, we would say that Cornelius was a “spiritual leader” in his home. When a devout man fears God, his entire household takes notice and the devout man leads his household to know the God whom he loves and serves. It wasn’t enough for Cornelius to be a Christian. He led his entire house – his wife, children, grandchildren, servants – everyone who lived under his roof – to Christ. Then he led them to keep the commandments and statutes of God.

Cornelius was committed to his faith and diligent in his worship – and he saw that his household was too. He reverenced, respected, and honored God, and he taught his household to also do so. Cornelius was a man of prayer and fasting and he instilled this within the members of his household. He was a true spiritual leader in his home. A leader can’t be a leader if no one is following and here we find his entire household followed him.

3. A devout man gives generously

The Roman soldiers had a reputation of extortion and brutalization of the local population. But this Roman centurion gave generously to the people. He didn’t give out of what was left over every month. He gave generously. If there was a need, he helped meet that need. He listened as the Holy Spirit would say “give” and then he gave. He was kind – to the extent that in verse 4 we find that Cornelius has a vision with an angel of God who comes to him and says, “Cornelius! Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” He gave generously – and God took notice.

Generosity catches the eye of God:

God always notices the actions of everyone, but I think here attention is drawn to it because we have someone doing something that is against the norm. While the other Roman soldiers were known for extorting and brutalizing the people, Cornelius does the opposite and he gave generously.

In my overactive imagination, I see a Roman soldier taunting a old widow woman who is giving her last coin to purchase bread and just as the bread is placed in her hand the Roman soldier snatches away, takes a big bite, and then tells the old woman how good it tastes. As he walks on still eating the bread he didn’t pay for, Cornelius quietly places several coins in the woman’s hand that will keep her fed for the month. He then learns where she lives and discreetly has a servant deliver meals to her home several times a week.

Now that’s not in the Bible – that’s just how I see it in my mind because he gave generously. He didn’t just give the woman a coin so she could get another loaf of bread. He didn’t just buy a loaf of bread and then hand it to the woman. Generously, to me, means he would have given her not only what was taken, but more than that.

4. Devout men prays always

1 Thessalonians 5:17 simply says, “pray without ceasing.” That’s the idea here with Cornelius. In fact, as we keep reading in Acts 10, we find in verse 30 that Cornelius was fasting and praying. As a result of his praying, he has a vision and an angel of God appears to him to let him know his prayers have been heard. What was he praying for? We are not given the answer until verse 33 and the answer is the fifth characteristic of a devout man.

5. A Devout Man is Always Hungry to Know More about God.

In verse 33, Cornelius is explaining to Peter why Jesus spoke to him and sent Him to Caesarea. Cornelius says, “Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.” And Peter begins to preach and teach Cornelius’ entire household about the things of God. The result was that the Holy Spirit fell on these Gentile converts in the same way He fell on the disciples.

What if Christian Men today were devout like Cornelius?

Men, as Christians, you have been called to be spiritual leaders in your home. You have been called to be devout. You have been set apart to fear God and to lead and teach your entire household to fear God. God wants you to be kind and generous out of the abundant blessings He has given you. You should be going about your life in an attitude of praying without ceasing – to always be seeking God’s wisdom and guidance and leading your home as God leads you. You are called to lead. But to be a leader, you must have followers. But where are you leading them? To eternal life or eternal death? Are you leading them closer to Jesus? Are you leading them to have an never-ending hunger for God?

If Christian men were like Cornelius, how would our world be different?

Be a Guard

Week 1 of Advent: Preparation

The lyrics of a popular, secular Christmas song says, “You better watch out, you better not pout, you better not cry, I’m tellin’ you why – Santa Clause is coming to town.” We need to watch out and be ready, because Jesus is coming to town. We often look at preparation as the process of getting ready for something. But the prophet Ezekiel, gives us something a little bit different to think about as we prepare for the coming of Christ. In Ezekiel 38:7, he wrote:

“Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them.

Be ready

In the prophecy against Gog, the people are told to be ready. Back in the book of Exodus when God used Moses to bring the Israelites out of Egypt, they were told to be ready. We always need to be ready for when God is ready to move in our lives. Being ready means we’ve already made the necessary preparations. Exodus 12:11 says, “In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste.” The idea was to be ready to go the moment Pharaoh told them to leave. Being ready even before God is ready to act demonstrates faith that God will do what He says He will do.

Keep Ready

Sometimes God gives us direction and we get excited and start planning and getting ready – but then it feels like we just got ready to sit and wait. God’s timing doesn’t always match our timing, so once we’re ready, we need to keep ready. That means we keep everything ready that’s needed for what God is asking us to do – no matter how long God takes before He acts. Staying ready means we keep on believing God by faith and waiting on Him.

If the Israelites had gotten everything ready to leave but after the first plague Pharaoh didn’t let them leave and they quit believing in what God said and just sat back enjoying their meal, kicked off their shoes and relaxed, then by the time they got everything ready again, Pharaoh could have changed his mind and not let them leave. Or perhaps all the Egyptians would have had time to become angry over losing all their first born children and came in to massacre the Israelites.

God wasn’t just giving Pharaoh a hard time or paying him back for his cruelties to the Israelites. He was also teaching the Israelites about who He was and His power. It should have been a lesson to prepare them to trust Him in the dessert and to know He would lead them into the Promised Land. But as we know, they only had to get to the Red Sea before they began to doubt God. Perhaps this is why Ezekiel also said to be a guard.

Be a Guard

A guard protects. He stands between the vulnerable and danger. He warns of coming danger. A guard fights for those who can’t fight for themselves. He protects the assets. The guard stays diligent – always looking out for any possible danger. He doesn’t sleep through the night. He doesn’t sit around playing cards or scrolling social media. He’s guarding what is most valuable to him.

Guarding your heart

This isn’t about protecting yourself from someone hurting you. Solomon was talking about your spiritual heart in Proverbs 4:23-27. He thought that guarding your heart was more important than anything else. He wrote:

Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life. Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don’t let your lips talk deviously. Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established. Don’t turn to the right or to the left; keep your feet away from evil.

Guarding your heart is important because if you’ve not first protected it from temptation, then you will not be able to guard your mouth, eyes, or feet. Why? Jeremiah 17:9 tell us, “The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable.” The heart will make us believe that what our mouth, eyes, and feet want to do is ok. It will come up with all kinds of excuses until we rationalize why it would not be wrong to do whatever we are being tempted to do. So we must guard our heart and we do that through memorizing Scripture, studying God’s Word, and spending time praying – without ceasing. If we do not guard our hearts, we will not be able to guard anything else.

Guard the host assembled about you

Ezekiel also said we are to guard the host assembled around us – that’s your family. Your spouse, your children. If you are a married man, God has called you to be a spiritual leader in your home and part of that responsibility is guarding your wife and children. Not only in a physical sense, but also in a spiritual sense. You guard them by praying for them, by being a Godly role model for them, teaching them God’s Word through family devotions, training them in the ways of God, taking them to church, and teach them how to love God with all their hearts, minds, and soul. Are you guarding the host assembled about you?

How ready are you?

Before Jesus’ birth the Israelites’ Advent was preparing expectantly for the coming Messiah. But when He came, they had no idea that He walked among them. They created in their own minds what the Messiah would be – a King who would overthrow their oppressors. They were not expecting a baby born low income parents who would lay Him in a manger.

Today, our Advent is the second coming of Jesus. In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul wrote, “For you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.” We will not know before hand when He will come again, so we must be on guard and always ready. We need to have the expectancy that He could come again in any moment and live so that we would not ever be ashamed if He returned and caught us doing something we shouldn’t. And we need to live with the urgency that if He came right now, how many people would not be ready? What are we doing to help others be ready?

Be Ready and Be on Guard

As we are preparing our hearts for Christmas, take time alone with the Holy Spirit and ask Him how ready you are for the second coming of Christ. How ready are you for God to do the next thing in your life? How well are you guarding your heart, your spouse and children? What do you need to do to be ready, keep ready, and to guard the host assembled around you?

Digging Deeper: Me and My House

This week we are digging deeper into our memory verse – Joshua 24:15

Each day will will focus on just one part of the verse. As we are digging deeper, begin with praying that the Holy Spirit will give you wisdom, to open your ears to hear Him speak to you, and to soften your heart so you can apply what He reveals to you.

The verse says:

Digging Deeper: Make it personal

Begin by reading the verse again but personalize it as Paul is writing to you:

As for [YOUR NAME] and the [YOUR LAST NAME] house, we will serve the Lord. — Joshua 24:15

Today we digging deeper into how the spiritual leader leads his house.

Digging Deeper: Recap

Monday, we looked at the first part of the verse that says, “As for me…” and ways to be a spiritual leader in your home. Yesterday, we examined what kind of leader Joshua was and how men can follow his example. Read the previous posts here:

Digging Deeper: Me and my house

While it is true that every individual must decide for themselves to follow Christ, the spiritual leader has a responsibility of leading his family to Christ, to grow in Christ and to serve Christ. Joshua didn’t say that he chose to serve the Lord. He said that he and his house. He made the decision for his household that they, as a family, would serve the Lord. In this post, we challenge men to examine if you can make the same claim as Joshua as say, “As for me and my house…”

As for me and my house, we will follow Christ

As a spiritual leader, you should live out what a follower of Christ looks like as a model for your wife and children. When they look at you, they should see Christ in you. When you love them, they should see Christ’s love in how you love them. They should see Christ serving them as you serve them. As you lead in this way, they will come to know Christ through you and you will have the opportunity to be a witness to them and lead them to Christ.

Do you lead in such a way that you are a witness of Christ to your family and you are able to lead them to Christ and follow Christ?

As for me and my house, we will grow in Christ

As a spiritual leader, you have the responsibility of ensuring your family is growing spiritually. This means you are responsible to see that they are in church, but also in the Word of God at home. You should be leading your family in a daily time of studying God’s Word together and praying together. You should challenge them to hide God’s Word in their heart by memorizing scripture and then meditating on it day and night and teach them to recognize how God wants them to apply it to their lives.

Do you lead in such a way that your family is growing in Christ?

As for me and my house, we will serve Christ

As a spiritual leader in your home, you should be teaching and encouraging your family to serve the Lord. We serve Him through worship and praise, but we also serve Him as we serve others. As a spiritual leader you should teach your family that serving others is a joy and privilege. You should help them identify their God-given gifts and talents and how to plug those into the ministry of your church and teach them how to serve through the ministry of the church. If your church is having a work day, your children should be there helping. If they are praying for someone, they should be taught to pray along with you. And as we navigate 2020 and COVID19, you can teach them to serve others as a ministry of your family.

Do you lead in such a way that your family is serving Christ? Is there a way you can organize a day of serving your community during COVID? Plan a service project for your family to do together and teach them that as they serve others, they are serving Jesus.

Mark 6:31 – Time for rest

Today’s Verse: Ephesians 5:23

by Julie Bruce

Jesus and the Disciples needed rest

Jesus had been performing miracle after miracle. He had been teaching crowds, defending himself against the Pharisees, and now recently, his cousin, John the Baptist had been beheaded. And everywhere He went, he had the disciples in tow, teaching them everything He possible could for the time after He would return to heaven and the gospel message would be placed into their hands to spread throughout the world. They stood by observing, soaking everything in and miracle after miracle, they were left in speechless awe. We also find in Mark 6 that they were weary and needed rest.

Then, the story changes scenes as Mark inserts the interlude story of John the Baptist being beheaded. In the gospel of Matthew, we find that this incident is connected to Jesus deciding to get away for a while for some rest.

We all need rest from time to time, even when we are busy doing the Lord’s work and serving Him through ministry. Since God created us, he knows more than anyone else that our bodies need adequate rest. And because Jesus, the Son of God, came to dwell among us in a flesh and blood body, he experienced being tired. In John 4:6, we find Jesus worn out from His journey and sat beside the well where he would encounter the Woman at the Well.

Without rest, we are not fully able to accomplish the tasks he has called us to do. When we become so tired that we don’t know how we can keep going, Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus calls us to himself

The Greek word for “come” is deute and means to “come hither” or “follow.” Jesus calls us to himself and to follow His example. Jesus calls us to experience Him in an up-close-and-personal kind of way. He longs to bring us into close proximity and into an intimate fellowship with himself. He wants us to take whatever circumstance we are in and He says, “Give them to Me.” He longs for us to give Him every burden and problem in total surrender and dependence on Him. As we learn to trust him, we are then able to find peace and rest. In 2 Chronicles 20:17, God tells his people to “position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord. He is with you.”

Heavy-ladened and weary

Sometimes we get so caught up in hurrying from one to-do item to another that we barely have time to breathe. We end up heavy-laden with burdens and become weary. The Greek word for “weary” is kopiao and means “to labor, toil, expand great effort in hard and disagreeable work,” “to grow weary, tired; labor to the point of exhaustion.” Doesn’t this sound like us? But instead of taking time to rest, we just grab some caffeine or one of those very unhealthy energy drinks and just keep going. The result shows in both our physical health and emotional health. What we really need, is rest.

Feb 25 ctt 1

God created our need for rest

“Rest” is the Greek word anapauo which means “to refresh, rest up,” or “to cease from labor.” God created our need for rest…a pause from life…for our own good.  A pause to cease from the hustle and noise of life so we are able to:

  • Seek His will and determine our steps
  • spend time with God so we are able to listen to Him
  • re-energize
  • avoid burnout
  • to keep serving Him in whatever capacity we have been called

Saying “yes” to too much

At times, we allow ourselves to get so caught up in life and say “yes” to too many things (sometimes, even ministry areas in the church) until we become burned out. But when we take a pause and seek His will, He will give us insights and let us know His will so that we don’t overextend ourselves to the point of becoming exhausted. We can protect ourselves from being involved in too much if we take the pause to determine His will. However, even when we are following His will, we become weary and need to take a pause. It then becomes a time of re-evaluation and we need to eliminate unnecessary things from our lives so that we have the energy and time to do what He has called us to do.

Daniel was weary

Sometimes, as we do the will of God, Satan fights against it and we feel as if we are rowing a boat upstream without a paddle. Taking a pause to spend time with God and pray over the task we’ve been given will send the angel armies our way. Daniel is an example of this.

In Daniel, chapter 9, he is praying for the Lord to hear him. Verses 20-23, Daniel pleads to God and in his weariness, Gabriel comes to him. Daniel wrote in these verses, “While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my petition before Yahweh my God concerning the holy mountain of my God- while I was praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the first vision, came to me in my extreme weariness.”

Then in Chapter 10, verses 12-13, Daniel receives another visit. In these verses we read, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia.”

God had heard Daniel’s prayers and sent his messenger to Daniel, but the prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in the way opposing the messenger. Daniel was completely unaware of the spiritual warfare his prayers were stirring up. Yet Daniel continued to pause and seek God until the messenger arrived.

A time of pause and rest allows us to listen to God

Another reason to pause and rest is so we are able to listen to the voice of God. 1 Kings 19:12 is the only verse in the Bible that talks about God speaking in a whisper. Because we have the Spirit of God dwelling within us, the way God speaks to us today is the soft whispers across our heart as we are reading His Word or as the Holy Spirit recalls a verse of scripture to our minds. Sometimes it comes to us as our pastor is preaching or in a conversation with a friend.

These soft, quiet impressions are easy to get loss in the loud bustle of everyday life. If we want to hear the voice of God, we need to quiet ourselves and listen with expectation. He longs to speak to us. But we have to ask ourselves, do we really want to hear His answer? Too often our prayer lives become a one-sided conversation where we tell God what we want Him to do in our lives then jump up and go on about our day. There are things God would love to say to us, but we have to quit talking long enough for Him to get a word in. If you feel as if God never speaks to you, then perhaps it’s time to take a pause and rest in His presence….quietly before him and give Him a chance to speak as we sit silently and listen expectantly.

A time of pause and rest allows us to re-charge

Taking a pause also gives us the change to re-charge. Just as your car runs out of gas, so do our bodies run out of energy. We reach a point where we feel that we have nothing left to give and yet people are still demanding more from us. In Matthew 14:23, Jesus found the need to have some alone time. “After dismissing the crowds, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. When evening came, He was there alone.”

Did you notice what he did on the mountain, he prayed. Our help and our strength to keep keeping on comes from God. In Psalm 121:2, the psalmist wrote, “My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” In Psalm 28:7, he wrote, “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I praise Him with my song.” If you feel as if you energy tank is running on low, when was the last time you had some meaningful time along with God?

While we also need to take time to get plenty of physical rest each night, we cannot neglect the rest our souls need if we are going to be spiritually healthy. So as we take today to honor the labor of our hands, let’s also take time to rest, recharge so that our labors tomorrow hold new energy, ready to continue in the tasks that God has called us to…whether it’s a ministry related job, real estate, medical, education or any other field where work.

Four things Jesus invited the disciples to do

In Mark 6, Jesus recognized the disciples’ need for rest, and He recognizes ours as well. It is under these circumstances that He invited His disciples to…

  • come with him
  • by themselves
  • to a quiet place
  • and get some rest.

Get away

Sometimes getting the rest you need requires you to get away. Maybe you need to get physically away from all the distractions and just rest. Sometimes the rest we need is spiritual and we need to get away with Jesus. Either way, remember that our Savior knows when we need rest and in those moments He invites us to get away with Him. He wants to lead you away from the crowds and the busyness of life to just bask in His presence. To lean on Him, draw from His strength, and be renewed and refreshed. What will it take for you to actually get away with Him for the rest you need?

Relax and recover

Feb 25 ctt 2

Have you ever taken a vacation and when you get back you feel as if you need a vacation from your vacation? Sometimes our vacation are so jammed backed with activities that we come back more exhausted than before we left.

When Jesus invited the disciples to come by themselves, it was a time for the ministry team to relax and recover. Mark 6 tells us that the disciples had been in such high demand in the villages where they went that they hadn’t even had time to eat. Whether you serve in a ministry of some sort, are a stay-at-home-mom, a corporate executive, or a day laborer, we can become so busy that we don’t take time to stop an eat or see to the basic needs of life. Jesus invited his ministry team to take some time just for themselves – where they were not in demand, where they were not healing or preaching or casting out demons. Jesus wanted to invest in them relationally. He was also teaching them the importance of rest so they could keep on serving.

A quiet place

Not only did Jesus invite them to come with him to get away be themselves, but he also wanted them to find a quiet place. Have you ever noticed how uncomfortable it can be when everything is quiet? If we are with others, the silence often feels awkward. Some of us even need the hum of a fan just to go to sleep. Whenever I travel and stay in hotels, the hardest part of getting to sleep is how quiet the room is. The truth is, we simply are not used to quiet. However, Jesus challenges you to find it.

It is in the quiet where we can here Jesus say, “Be still and know that I am God.” He wants us to just be still and rest. God knows the demands that have been placed on us. He knows the ministry He has called us to. And He knows the problems you are struggling with. He knows. And He’s inviting you to come away with Him and rest.
