Each day between December 1-25, we will look at one of the traditional symbols of Christmas, what these symbols mean and how they tell the Christmas story of our Savior’s birth.

Chrismons

This week, we will discover the meanings behind some of the Chrismon symbols used to decorate the Christmas tree. Today, we are looking the shepherd’s staff and the dove. At the end of the post you’ll find full size patterns you can use to make your own Chrismons.

Our second set of Chrismons proclaim the life of our Savior as He lived and walked among men, setting the example for all to follow. We will use the fish, anchor, oil lamp, and rose. Today, we will look at the oil lamp and rose.

Oil Lamp Chrismons

The oil lamp reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the World. In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The Bible is also a lamp that lights our path. Psalms tells us, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” The Bible gives us direction for every path of our lives.

Rose Chrismons

Isaiah 35:1-2 says, “the wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them. And the desert
shall rejoice and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, even with joy and singing.” The prophet, Isaiah, spoke of the rose to symbolize the Nativity of our Lord. We use white roses to represent the purity of Jesus and gold roses to represent his deity.

Full size patterns for your Chrismons

Simply right-click, copy, and paste into a blank document and print on white paper to create your own Chrismons. Once you paste them into a document, you can resize them before you print them to get the size you want. You can then decorate them with gold glitter, paint, sequins, or any other gold decorations you like. Or you can also cut them out to use for patterns on other materials, such as Styrofoam, felt, poster board, etc. You can make them as fancy or simple as you want.

Fish Chrismons

One of the early signs of Christendom was the fish. The Greek word for fish is IXTHUS. This is an acrostic for the Greek words for Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

Anchor Chrismons

The anchor represents our faith that God stays with us in good times and bad. The Bible says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Hebrews 6:19 says, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Simply right-click, copy, and paste into a blank document and print on white paper to create your own Chrismons. Chrismons

Shepherd’s Staff Chrismons

Star of David Chrismons

From the Biblical Christmas story, the staff helps us remember the shepherds who were the first people to be told that the Savior had been born. They then went with haste and found the baby and worshiped Him. When they left, they told everyone they say the good news of great joy for all people.

It also represents Jesus’ title as the Good Shepherd. John 10:11 says, “I am the good shepherd: The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”

Dove Chrismons

In Luke 3:21-22, Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist and the Spirit of God descends upon Jesus in the form of a dove. (Hence, the Dove chrismon points downward.) A voice from heaven is heard saying, “You are my Son, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.” Because the Spirit of God appeared in the form of a dove, we use the dove as a symbol for the Holy Spirit.

As a symbol of the Holy Spirit this chrismon is also a reminder to us that the Holy Spirit lives inside all believers. In John 14:26, Jesus told the disciples that after He was gone, He would send them a helper. He said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

The Dove is also the symbol of peace. In John 16:33, Jesus said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

This week, we will discover the meanings behind some of the Chrismon symbols used to decorate the Christmas tree. Today, we are looking at 4 different stars and the angel. At the end of the post you’ll find full size patterns you can use to make your own Chrismons.

Star Chrismons

There are four star chrismons, each with a specific meaning:

Star of David Chrismon

The star of David, sometimes called the Star of Creation, is a symbol that Jesus was a Jew and a descendant of King David.

5 Pointed Star Chrismon

The five pointed star is a reminder of the five wounds Jesus received while on the cross: the nails in each hand and foot and the piercing of his side.

Nativity Star Chrismon

The Nativity star represents the star that shone brightly in the sky, leading the wise men to Jesus.

8 pointed Star Chrismon

Represents baptism and regeneration. Jesus was circumcised and given his name when he was eight days old. Baptism is understood to be the New Testament equivalent of the covenant of circumcision.

Angel Chrismons

The angel chrismon reminds us of the angel that told Mary she had been chosen to bare the Son of God and the angels that appeared to the shepherds. In Luke 1:26-33, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she is highly favored of God and has been chosen by God to bare the Christ-child. In chapter 2, verses 8-16, we find the angel who tells the shepherds of Jesus’ birth and then is joined by a host of angels singing, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace good will toward men.”

This Chrismon can also represent the second coming of Jesus, which the Bible says will start with an Angel blowing a trumpet.

Chrismons

Chrismons are Christmas ornaments placed on the Christmas tree with Christian symbols on them. Today, they are often used in a church called “The Hanging of the Greens.” In this service, the congregation participates in a worship service that decorates the worship area for the Christmas holidays while acknowledging the true meaning of Christmas. Chrismons help Christians to remember the brith, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ. Some Christian homes will also use Chrismons on their tree at home.

The Beginning of Chrismons

Chrismons were first used at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, Virginia in 1957. Frances Kipps Spencer introduced Chrismons and came up with the word, “Chrismon,” which is a combination of Christ and monogram (meaning symbol). Therefore these decorations are symbols that tell us about Christ. The idea quickly spread to other churches. Many Christian groups make their own Chrismons with their favorite symbols on. Therefore, you may see different Chrismons in different churches and different denominations. Centuries-old symbols are used to represent a variety of biblical and theological concepts that are well known to most believes.

Each Christmas since that service in 1957, a 20 foot Christmas Tree has been decorated with the use of Chrismons at the Ascension Lutheran Church. Visitors and congregants alike come to hear the message of Jesus through the use of the Chrismons.

What do Chrismons look like?

Chrismons are traditionally colored white and gold. White is the liturgical (or Church) color for Christmas and symbolises that Jesus was pure and perfect. Gold symbolises His Majesty and Glory.

Chrismons can be made from nearly anything, but white paper, Styrofoam, and embroidered ones are the most widely used. Most often the shapes are cut out and then decorated with gold glitter, paint, or thread.

In the next few posts, we will discuss a few of these Chrismons their meanings. We will also provide patterns for the Chrismoms we’ll discuss so you can make your own Chrismons to use on your Christmas Tree.
