Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Keeping the Sabbath

Whether your Sabbath is Saturday or Sunday, do you keep it holy? Exodus 31:13-14 tells us that keeping the Sabbath is a sign between us and God so that we may know that God is the one who sanctifies us and sets apart to be his own children. We are to keep the Sabbath, because it is holy. It is the day we are to focus our attention on God, worship Him, fellowship with other believers, praise Him, allow Him to convict us, mold us, and grow us into His image.

Revival is needed when we fail to keep the Sabbath holy

However, if the Superbowl game or fishing or sleeping in is more important, then you’re not keeping the Sabbath. If you’re more concerned with professional or financial gain then spiritual gain, you’re not keeping the Sabbath. When church becomes more of a social gathering than a worship gather, we’re not keeping the Sabbath holy. If you are too busy criticizing the music or the pastor than you are listening to what God wants to say to you, you’re not keeping the Sabbath holy. Keeping the Sabbath holy should be an intimate act of worship between you and God. What do you need to do to keep the Sabbath holy?

The Need for Revival

  1. Spend time alone with the Holy Spirit and ask Him to show you how you have not kept the Sabbath holy.
  2. What adjustments do you need to make so that the Sabbath is experienced as God intended?

Praying for Revival

Father, forgive us for not honoring you by keeping your Sabbath holy. Prick our hearts and give a zeal and passion to worship you and set aside our Sabbath day as a holy day to rest in you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

What does it mean to serve the Lord

Serving God is much more than just obeying Him. Certainly we serve Him when we follow His commandments, but it is also true that if you are not following His commandments, it is impossible to serve Him. If we are to serve Him, we must do life according to His way of living. We also serve God through our worship and faith. Serving God includes caring for the homeless, orphans, and widows, or those who need our help. We serve God through our prayers as we intercede for others. When we serve at church in any capacity, we are serving God. We serve him as we witness to the lost and when we use the gifts he has given us to fulfill His purpose in our lives. When we mentor new Christians and help them grow in their faith, we are serving God.

Serving God is vital because it is through serving Him that we are salt and light in the earth and the world will know that He is God.

Serving God brings His blessings

In Exodus 23:25, God says that if Israel served Him, he would bless their bread and water and remove sickness from them. The unspoken statement is the opposite. If we refuse to serve God and live according to his commands and statutes, then he does not bless our bread and water and he will bring sickness on us. We are no longer a nation that serves God. Is COVID God’s response to our turning away from Him? Only God can answer that, but if so, our nation needs a revival and repent of its many sins and turn back to God if He is to remove the sickness from us.

The Need for Revival

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you are not serving God or serving Him with wrong motivations.
  2. Intercede for our nation and ask God to forgive the sins of our nation.
  3. Ask God to raise up leaders in our nation that fear Him and will lead our nation to serve and obey God.

Praying for Revival

Father, forgive us for the numerous sins in our lives and in our nation. We desperately need you in our nation and our world. Lord, give us hearts to serve you and we ask that you remove the sickness of COVID from us. Lord, you said in your word that you appoint leaders at appointed times to carry out your plans. We ask that the leaders of our nation would turn their hearts back to you. Give them a desire to serve you and obey you. Give them boldness to remove the abomination sins of our nation and to lead this nation back to you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

Do not fear

When God appeared to Israel at Mt. Sinai, he came with a loud trumpet blast, with thunder and lightening. The Bible says that even the mountain trembled. The people did not need to be afraid that God would exterminate them but rather this extravagant and frightening display would cause them to recognize God’s power, presence, and holiness. As a result they would be motivated to avoid sin and the consequences of sin when God brought judgement on them.

God has come to test you

These verses come before the Israel talk Aaron into making the golden calf. So despite experiencing God’s presence in such a frightening way, they still make the golden calf. But before we judge Israel, we need to take an honest look at ourselves because we do the same thing. God shows up in our life through an answered prayer or unexpected blessing or we sense his peace in grief and then we turn right around and fall into sin – again.

Revival is needed when a nation falls into sin

Like Israel, we are a nation that has fallen into sin. Gross sins. Numerous sins. Sins that God would call an abomination. Sins that would justifiably bring God’s judgment and perhaps COVID is God’s judgment on a world that has turned their back on Him. In Exodus 23:25, God tells the people that if they serve Him and obey Him, he will take sickness away from them. We need to experience a revival that will turn us back to serving and obeying God. If we pray for God to remove COVID, but we refuse to turn back to Him, then we can’t expect for Him to hear or answer our prayers. Before God removes the sickness, we must experience revival and turn back to Him

The Need for Revival

  1. Seek forgiveness for sins in your own life.

What is coveting?

Coveting is desiring what someone else has. It’s the “Keeping Up with the Joneses” Syndrome. As Exodus 20:17 indicates, we can be guilty of wanting/desiring someone’s husband or wife.

We don’t have servants today, but it might look like a housewife who is content with the small home she has but then is invited to someone’s home for a small group meeting and their home is large, professionally decorated and such and then when she goes homes, she’s no longer satisfied with her smaller home and begins to pressure her husband for a bigger home.

We also don’t typically go around coveting someone’s ox – but the ox represented one’s livelihood in Old Testament times. So when you say things like, “I work just as hard as they do! Why do they get the higher position and fancy office? That should be mine.”

And the commandment also says we are not to covet anything that belongs to our neighbor – so not the car they drive or the professionally manicured lawn, or the expensive vacations they take ever summer.

Revival refocuses our attention on God

Any time we are coveting what others have, we lose our focus on God and the many blessings that He gives to us. Revival refocuses our attention to God rather than our possessions. 1 Timothy 6:6–10 gives us the cure for covetousness: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

The Need for Revival

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas of covetousness in your life.
  2. Ask Him to forgive you and to help you be content with the blessings He has given you.

Praying for Revival

Father, forgive us for coveting what others have. When we covet, it blinds us to be able to see the many blessings you have given us. Give us a heart of contentment and a faith to know that you will supply our every need.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

God’s Commandments are not Suggestions

Keep Your Cotton-Pickin’ Hands Off

At a summer religious camp for children one of the counselors was leading a discussion on the purpose God has for all of his creation. They began to find good reasons for clouds and trees and rocks and rivers and animals and just about everything else in nature. Finally, one of the children said, “If God has a purpose for everything, then why did He create poison ivy?” The discussion leader gulped and, as he struggled with the question, one of the other children came to his rescue, saying, “The reason God made poison ivy is that He wanted us to know there are certain things we should keep our cotton-pickin’ hands off of.” God’s Ten Commandments provide the basic moral and spiritual compass for all humanity. They tell us what we should do and what we should “keep our cotton-picking hands (and eyes) off of.”

God’s Commandments are the foundation for our laws

They lay the foundation for all of our laws. They are built into the foundation of our nation, consitution, and the Declaration of Independence. Our government may try to pass laws that remove any display of the Ten Commandment from government property, but to remove the commandments, would be to strike the very laws we live by out of the statutes that govern society. Could you imagine living in a society where there are no laws that prohibit murder or theft?

When you remove God’s laws, we’re left with chaos and lawlessness

The more we try to remove God’s laws from our lives, the more chaotic and lawless the world becomes. The state of our society today begins with the breaking of the very first of these commandments: You shall have no other gods before Me. When we take God out of the equation, only lawlessness remains. God wants to be God over all parts of our lives. When we move Him out of that position, Satan creeps in with temptations and too often, we fall into sin.

God’s Commandments show us His Character

God never intended His laws to be a rigid list of rules so that life would be miserable. Instead the list is a display of His character and shows us the way to have a full and abundant life. Our greatest joy comes when we live in such a way that we show His character in all that we do and say.  Since God knows our thoughts and He knows the way that each one of us naturally responds in different situations, His laws provide the means towards having healthy relationships with others and with Him.

God’s Commandments show us our Need for a Savior

God also knew that no human being would ever be able to keep these laws, except for His holy and righteous Son, Jesus. Still He gave them so that we would have a moral compass to follow and to show us our own sinful nature in need of a Savior. Where we err in sin, God’s grace abounds in the loving sacrifice of Jesus.

God’s Commandments have consequences when broken

Just as with our governmental laws, where a law is broken there are consequences, so there is a consequence with breaking God’s law. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” The good news is that this statement is followed with a “but”….”but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s grace and forgiveness comes much easier than that of the government! It’s a simple gift of faith and trust and the belief of Jesus as God’s only Son. The government would have you pay the fine and/or do the time. God simply says, “Come to Me with a repentant heart by faith and ask Me to forgive you and I will.”
