Leviticus 13

Matthew 26:20-54

Watch and pray

Sin grows in the cracks of your prayer life

What happens when you forget to pray or don’t take time to pray? Or what happens if you are not vigilant in watching out for Satan’s temptations? All you need to grow fine, vigorous grass is a crack in your sidewalk. Sin happens the same way. All you need to grow fine, vigorous sin is a crack in your prayer life. The roots of sin run deep. And if we are not constantly pruning and weeding our lives through prayer and reading the Bible, sin will push through the cracks and rear its ugly head and blossom into a full blown plant before we know it. So we must be diligent to watch and pray.

Because we all were born with a sin nature that makes us rebel against God. When given a choice to do God’s will or our own, our natural inclination is to do what we want.  If you want proof, just look at a young child. No one has to teach a child to lie or to be selfish. On the contrary, parents will go to great trouble to teach their child honesty and integrity and to love others more than themselves. Sinning comes naturally. Sin flows through our veins. Its woven into every atom and its in our DNA. Doing what’s right in the sight of God takes a constant conscious effort because temptation is everywhere. Therefor, we need to watch and pray. Watch out for the temptations that so easily ensnares us and pray for the strength to overcome temptation.

Don’t open the door to temptation and sin

A young, eager salesman was delivering a bid to an engineering firm. The man he was meeting with stepped away from his desk for a few moments and he noticed on the desk was the proposal from a competitor. He was unable to see the total amount of the bid due to a juice can that sat on top of the amount. The temptation was too much for him to resist and as he lifted the can to reveal the amount, thousands of BBs poured from the bottomless can. When we open the door to temptation and sin, they come pouring out all around us.

James warns us about the path that leads to sin and tells us not to be deceived. He writes in James 1:14-16, “But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dearly loved brothers.”

Temptation is the doorway that leads to sin and often when we open the door, we end up involved in many sins. For example, when we tell a lie, we often find we end up telling another lie to cover up the first lie until we end up weaving a web of lies that we can’t remember what we told to whom.

Watch and Pray

This is why Jesus taught his disciples to watch and pray. He knew that His followers were willing to obey His teachings, but that their flesh was weak. They couldn’t help it – they were born in sin and their natural tendency is to sin. We are just like the disciples. As children of God, we are willing to obey Him, but we are just as weak as the they were because we too were born in sin.

This is why we need to be constantly on our guard – watching for the seeds of temptation that Satan will throw in front of us trying to lure us in to his death trap. And when we see that temptation sticking up through the crack, we need to weed it out with prayer and scripture. Quoting the promises from the Bible is exactly what Jesus did in His showdown with Satan. He overcame the temptations because He knew what the Scriptures said and when Satan twisted them up Jesus set him straight. This is why memorizing God’s Word and hiding it in our heart is so important.

So if we want to overcome temptation and sin, we need to watch and pray. We need to watch out for the traps and wiles of the devil’s temptations. Then weed out temptation and sin with the truth of God’s Words and then turn and walk away from the temptation. Don’t sit around with it, admiring it . Walk away from it! The guilt that sin leaves behind is never worth the temporary pleasure found in the sin. So be vigilant and when temptation comes knocking, kneel in prayer.
