Thirsty for God

As Christians, we all go through seasons where it seems God is not near. Where it seems as if God is not working in our lives. Or where it seems as if God is silent. We pray diligently for a long time for God to move in a certain situation, but it just feels as if He is not answering – in any way. It’s like being out in a desert without water. You’re parched. Thirsty. Desperate for a drink of the Living Water. Your soul is thirsty for God.

When you’re thirsty remember that God is your God

Idolatry leads to a thirsty soul

It’s in these moments that my soul thirsts and longs for God. It’s in these moments when I should seek Him even more. David starts out in Psalm 63 acknowledging that God is his God. All around the nation of Israel and even within Israel, there was rampant idol worship. But David proclaims God as his God.

We may not bow down to carved images, but most of us end up making something an idol in our lives. So if you’re feeling a little parched spiritually, do some soul searching and be sure that God is still God to you and that you have not given people or things a position of more importance than God. If you question if you have made something an idol, then start by thinking about where you spend the most of your time and money. What are the things you crave or long for? Do you long for these more than you long for a personal relationship with God? If so, then you may have let an idol sneak into your life. Confess it to God and renew your commitment to Him and make Him God in your life.

Forsaking God leads to a thirsty soul

Just as all the nations around Israel practiced idolatry, in our world today, it can feel as if all around us people are forsaking God. Even without government, our leaders are stamping out God and choosing to live their own way. As we continue to battle a pandemic, it can be hard to see God. When our lives are chaotic, filled with unknowns, and the constant noise of fear and doubt, we desperately long for God. We can take a few quiet moments and get alone with God and spend time in praise and worship and proclaim to Him, “O God! You are my God!” As we proclaim Him God in our lives, our souls will drink in His presence, refresh and renew us.

When you’re thirsty for God, seek Him early

David also wrote that he sought out God early. Whether this is a reference to first thing in the morning or the first place David went in times of parchness, either is applicable to our lives. When we start out the day spending time alone with God, the entire day goes differently. As problems come up, we’ve already been fortified with the Word of God that can give us different perspectives and makes us more equipped to either handle the problem in a Godly manner or to surrender the problem to the God who is in control of all.

If your soul is thirsty and longs for God, try starting every morning reading the Bible and praying. If you don’t know where to begin, we are working our way through the entire Bible in 2021 and we post every morning that day’s scripture reading with links where you can read the passage online. Start there, if you have no other system. You could also try a Bible study either alone, or in your small group at church or with a group of your friends and family. Or there are online Bible studies that you can join. The point is, if your thirsty for God and you’re not hearing from Him, then there is a good chance you’re not spending time studying His Word and praying.

Thirsty in a spiritual desert

When we do find ourselves in a spiritual desert, we need to seek God early. The longer we are in the desert without the Living Water, the thirstier we will become. We can become spiritually dehydrated in that the things of God become less and less important. We begin skipping church. And we stop going to our small group Bible studies. And the passion and love that we once had for God shrivels up and disappears. We keep trying to quench the thirst, but often it’s with the wrong things, such as relationships, alcohol, sex, hobbies, or work. But what our soul really needs is a tall glass of ice cold Living Water. It’s important to begin seeking Him as soon as the thirst begins so we are not tempted to quench our thirst with other things. Don’t put it off until tomorrow. Start today seeking God.

When God causes us to be thirsty for Him

It’s also important for us to understand that sometimes God leads us into the desert to cause us to be thirsty for Him. We may still be spending time in Bible study, prayer, and worship, but we still feel as if we are in the spiritual desert. When we are thirsty and long for Him, we seek Him more diligently than other times. As we seek Him, we learn more about Him and our relationship with Him becomes stronger. God may be inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him. If you can’t seem to get out of the “spiritual desert,” then spend time in the Bible seeking to understand more about God. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to learn what God is wanting to reveal to you about Himself.

In a dry and thirsty land

Lastly, we see that David’s “flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land.” Again, all around David were people who worshiped idols. They were dry and thirsty without God so they created their own gods. Our world today is also a dry and thirsty land. The world has insisted on removing God from our schools and government. If the world had it’s way, it would stamp out churches and take away religious freedoms. It doesn’t even realize that it is dry and thirsty and that what it needs more than anything else is a drink of Living Water. Do we long for God in the dry and thirsty land in which we live? Do we long for Him enough that we will be a dispenser of Living Water?

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink

We should always be thirsty and wanting more of God in our lives but when our spiritual life feels more like a desert, we can pray just as David did: “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land.” In John 7:37, Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'” If you’re thirsty, come to Jesus – He is the Living Water – and only in Him will the thirst be quenched.
