Who Is Jesus to You?

The people who should have recognized him, didn’t

Have you ever noticed all the people around Jesus were struggling with who He was. The Scribes and Pharisees accused Jesus of blasphemy. The Jews were looking for a military leader/King that would remove the Roman empire from ruling over them. They were not looking for someone that came from a poor family. At this point in Jesus’ ministry, even the disciples were not yet really sure who Jesus was, other than a great teacher who had the ability to do miracles.

If anyone should have recognized who Jesus was it was the Jews. Scriptures pointed to Him and prophesies foretold Him. They should have been able to put the pieces together and say, “That’s Him! He’s the one we’ve been waiting for! Here is God’s Messiah!” But they had taken their idea and concept about the Messiah and put it in a box and Jesus didn’t fit the mold they created.

The ones who did recognize him

Instead, the ones who did recognize and know him were the demons who fell down before Him and cried out, “Thou art the Son of God.” They knew who He was. They had been in heaven as angels before they were cast out along with Satan. So they knew Him. Yet, even with the demons proclaiming Jesus as the Son of God, the people still didn’t get it. They chose to live with blinders on. They couldn’t see that the Messiah was standing right in front of them.

People still argue over who Jesus is

Is today much different? People still argue over who Jesus is. The world still rejects Him. It won’t always be so. Paul wrote to the church at Phillipi and said, “at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth (Philippians 2:10).

In John’s Revelation of things to come, he wrote: “there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were robed in white with palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures, and they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, saying: Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 7:9-12).

Denying who Jesus is doesn’t change who he is

There will come a day, when every tongue will proclaim Jesus as Lord and every knee will bow before Him. (Romans 14:11) Denying who He is doesn’t change who He is. Regardless of who you say He is, He is the only Son of God who lived a perfect, sinless life, died on a cross to pay the penalty for your sin, then rose again victorious and now sits at the right hand of the Father for all eternity. But who you say He is will decide where you spend eternity. The questions isn’t “who is Jesus?” The question is, “who is Jesus to you?”

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain. Holy, holy is He!
