Numbers 28-29

Mark 9:1-29

All Thanks are Possible

Let’s imagine the scene taking place in Mark 9. In our scene the characters are Jesus, a desperate father, a boy, a nasty, evil demon, and the bewildered disciples – and of course there’s a crowd. In this story we will see both the faith and unbelief of a father desperately seeking help for his son and he learns that with God, all things are possible.

If you believe, all things are possible

The boy was possessed by a demon and had been for many years. This demon was so evil that its intent was to destroy the boy. The father was at his wits end and brought his son to Jesus as a last resort for any kind of help. He encountered Jesus’ disciples and they attempted to get rid of the demon, but they were not able to. In light of the disciples in ability to get rid of the demon, it’s not inappropriate for the father to say to Jesus, “If you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

However, the issue is not Jesus’ ability to help, but the father’s faith. Jesus says to the father, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” The father expresses both faith and unbelief at the same time. He says, “Lord I believe.” But then his very next sentence is, “Help my unbelief.”

A hopeless father appeals to the God of the possible

The Bible doesn’t tell us that the father had heard or seen all the miracles that Jesus had been doing. But we can assume that news like that travels – and fast. Even if he hadn’t witnessed Jesus doing miracles, he probably had heard the stories. He could have even seen some of the blind who could now see or the terminally ill now healed. Some of those that Jesus had healed probably resided in the same village as this father and his son. And the son whom he loves has a problem – and a big one.

The father describes the demon as a “mute spirit”  that seizes the boy, throws him down and the boy foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. Jesus tells the father to bring the boy to him. As soon as he sees Jesus, the boy convulsed, fell to the ground and began foaming at the mouth. Jesus asks the father how long this had been going on. The father tells him, “from childhood.” He goes on to say that this demon has thrown the boy in the fire and water trying to destroy him. Perhaps this is what happened that caused the father to bring the boy to Jesus at this moment in time. The hopeless father appeals to the compassion of the very person who can do something about his problem.

Is Jesus a first solution or last resort for your impossibles?

Too often we are just like this father. We don’t come to Jesus with our problem until Jesus is our last ditch effort. How would our problems be different if we started with bringing them to Jesus rather than making him our “last resort”? If we truly had the faith that all things are possible, we would bring every impossible problem to Jesus as our first solution rather than our last resort.

Struggling with faith and unbelief

We also can struggle with both faith and unbelief at the same time. We believe that God can bring healing or meet our financial need. Or we believe that he can repair broken relationships and bring the prodigal child back home. And we can believe that God will work everything out for our good. But do we have the faith that was seen in Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego who believed that God would save them from the fiery furnace? They had such faith that God would deliver them that they told Nebuchadnezzar, “We serve a God who is able to deliver us, but even if he does not, we will not worship other gods who are false!” (Daniel 3:16-18)

Can we claim this verse as a promise?

Often times, we see that people “claim” this verse as their promise from God and then expect God to give them whatever they ask for. But God isn’t a “name it and claim it” God. He’s a loving father who only gives good gifts to His children. It doesn’t matter how much I might want Porsche, if God feels that car is not in my best interest He will not give it to me – no matter how much faith I have or how long I pray.

The simple truth: All things are possible for God

The simple truth is God can do anything. I mean He spoke our universe into existence so He really can do anything. He is able. However, he only does things according to His plan, His purpose, and His will. But when we are seeking His will and living according to His will then our wants will align with God’s wants and we can have the faith that God will do exactly we need Him to do. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus said, “if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” A mustard seed is very tiny, but even with just that much faith, Jesus said nothing is impossible.

Help my unbelief

If Jesus had up a faith meter held against you, how much faith would the meter say you have? If it would register a little low, we can cry out just like the boy’s father and say, “Help my unbelief!”

Exodus 7-8

Matthew 17

Faith to see the Possible with God

Faith to Get us out of this hot mess!

A fireman was telling a kindergarten class what to do in case of a fire. He said, “First, go to the door and feel the door to see if it’s hot. Then fall to your knees. Does anyone know why you should fall to your knees?” One little boy replied, “Sure, to start praying to ask God to get us out of this hot mess!” Someone must have been teaching this kindergartner about seeking God by faith.

Do we pray with faith that believes God will come through?

Whether we find ourselves in a hot mess or need a miracle or asking for God to meet a big need, or asking for God to send a revival to America, we often bring such requests to God in prayer, but do we really pray believing that God will come through? The “mountain” in these verses is a metaphor for accomplishing an impossible task. But what is impossible for us, is totally doable to God. There is nothing impossible for Him. The entire world was created with just his spoken word. So whatever your “big” thing is – God’s got it.

Faith doesn’t see the impossible

When God asks us to do something that seems humanly impossible, do you only see the impossible? If so, know that God only sees the possible and if God has called you to the task, then nothing will be impossible. If the task is God’s plan – then nothing will stop it. In His time and in His divine plan, everything will occur just as he plans. Faith doesn’t see the impossible – it sees what God can do before He does it.

If you have faith of a mustard seed

We often read verse 20 and many times we quote this verse about having the faith of a mustard seed, but we stop reading at the end of verse 20 and ignore verse 21. The promise that nothing will be impossible is a conditional promise. See the first word in verse 20? “IF.” That means there is a condition to nothing being impossible. We must have faith – even just the tiny size of a mustard seed.

Big needs require prayer and fasting

Jesus said, that these kinds of requests only occur by prayer and fasting. Fasting strengthens prayer. It is used to seek God’s guidance, deliverance or protection. It can be used to express repentance or to humble ourselves before God. And it can be an act of worship or demonstration of our love for God. When we are seeking God to do something that seems impossible to man, fasting and prayer helps us make sure that those request are aligned with His will.

Nothing that is believed by faith and in the wisdom and love of God, surrendered to His will is beyond what God can do through our prayers. Do you truly have the faith that God can do what you’re asking Him to do?

A Nation with a Broken Moral Compass

What happens when a nation throws out its moral compass? Everyone does just as each person wants to do. Without a moral compass, there are no absolutes. No absolute truth that guides and determines this is right or this is wrong. There is no absolute in gender and marriage gets redefined. Instead of One God, there are many gods and all are accepted. You’ve probably seen the popular bumper sticker that says, “Co-exist” and each letter represents a different religion. Certainly, we should love others as Jesus loves them, but that does not mean we accept anything that blatantly contradicts the Bible.

The cost of losing our moral compass

America has lost its moral compass and without a spiritual revival our nation is doomed to more and more moral decay. How much decay has to happen before we are humbled enough to fall our knees and cry out for God’s mercy? Does it take 30,492,334 Americans infected with COVID-19? Does it take over 553,681 dying from COVID in America? Or does it take 5,633 people dying in the last 7 days from COVID-19? These are the statistics reported by the CDC on April 4, 2021. What would it take for this nation to humble itself, pray, and seek God’s face?

Old Testament Israel lost it’s moral compass

Israel also spiraled down into moral decay and lost its moral compass. In Judges 17, we find a son who stole from his mother – 1100 silver coins. The mom, angry over the theft pronounces a curse on whoever stole the money, not knowing she was cursing her own son. The son hears about it and decides to return the money – not because he is convicted about the wrong but because he’s afraid of the curse. Then we see the mom do something that is becoming more and more common in parents today – she blesses the son. There is no discipline. No discussion about right or wrong. In fact, she is so happy to get the coins back that she says she’s going to dedicate them to God and has it melted down and shaped into an idol — but God had commanded them to not make any idols.

The Loss of a moral compass spreads

What begins in the home will eventually spread to the community, the government, and the nation. At the point of Judges 17, we see that the nation lost its moral compass and in verse six we read: “In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did whatever he wanted.” The eventual result is God’s judgement on the nation.

And it always happens in the same order: Moral decay at home, then the community and the church, and then the government. Then God brings judgement and the people wonder what’s happening. They panic and buy up all the toilet paper. Well, there is a big mess that needs cleaning up, but all the toilet paper in the world will not clean the mess up. What’s needed is a spiritual clean up. We need for the Holy Spirit to sweep in and clean up the hearts of God people. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says:

2 Chronicles 7 14

Bringing Back God’s Glory to America

So how do we bring back God’s glory to America? Perhaps you’re thinking that you’d love to see that happen – for America to truly be great again. But it won’t come from a president. It won’t come from the House, Congress, the Senate, or the White House. It will only come when God is invited back in to our homes, our communities, our government, and our nation. So where do we start? The best place is at the beginning.

Rebuilding our moral compass foundation:

As we read the story in Judges 17, the Micah mentioned here is not the prophet. This Micah is about as far away from being a prophet as he can get. He’s nothing more than a spoiled brat, used to getting whatever he wanted, taking whatever he wanted and without any consequence. His home is so messed up and spiritually blind that they had no clue that idolatry was strictly forbidden. In fact, his mother thought she was doing God a favor and honoring Him by making an idol to Him. But this home was steeped in idolatry. Verse five tells us Micah had a whole shrine of idols.

What we have in this home is a very crumbled foundation. One that was broken to pieces by coveting, stealing, cursing, dishonoring of parents, and idolatry. And that’s just what this story tells us about this family. Only God knows what else was going on in the home. And yet if you were to confront them, they would probably try to take you to court, sue you for some kind of discrimination charge and claim they are entitled to their own opinion and can live any way they want. This is exactly what is meant in verse seven when the Bible says, “Every man did what was right in his own eyes.”

Doesn’t this sound like America today? Everyone does whatever they feel is right. They have no regard for what God says is right. It’s as if people think they can pass or change laws to make something right, then it will be right and they don’t have to feel guilty. But God’s laws do not change and their guilt is still before the eyes of God.

Rebuilding our spiritual moral compass

The same is true about religion. If we don’t like what the Bible says, we choose to “interpret” it differently and start a new religion so we can live exactly the way we want to. We ignore the absolute truth, authority, standards, and morals that God commands in His Word and throw it back in His face in favor of living however we want to live. This attitude runs pervasively throughout the homes of our nation – even in many of the homes that consider themselves Christian.

Let’s call the problem by its name

If we are going to rebuild the crumbling foundation of our nation – it begins at home with parents humbling themselves before God, praying and seeking His face, and repenting of not bringing their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. When we as parents get our hearts right with God, we then need to live out the truths of God’s Word as an example for our children – to show them how to live.

If you want your children to obey you, then you should be the example by being obedient to the speed limits and other laws. They should see you being obedient to God’s Word. If you want them to be truthful and honest, then you need to be truthful and honest on your taxes, to your employer, and to them. If you want them to speak with kindness, then you need to speak kindly to the person checking you out at the grocery store or cutting you off in traffic. And if you want them to see church as important, they need to see you eager to go to church. If you want them to read God’s Word, they need to see you in the Word.

We as parents need to stop making excuses or sweeping behaviors under the carpet and ignoring them saying, “Its just a phase. They’ll outgrow it.” Let’s call it what it is – SIN – and then be parents.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord

If we want to reset our moral compass and bring God’s glory back to our nation, it begins in your house and in my house – not in the White House. We can blame the government, in fact, we like to blame all our problems on politics and the government so we don’t have to face our own sin problem. But it doesn’t matter who is behind the desk in the oval office. No president can make America great again. Making America great again begins with rebuilding the spiritual foundations of our nation through American home that is built upon the Word of God and standing on the Biblical truths God has given us.

It begins as we stand alongside of Joshua and say: “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

Praying for revival in America

Holy Spirit, convict our hearts of the sin of apostasy that has so befallen our nation. Open our eyes to both the lies of Satan and the truths of God’s Word. Create within us a longing for God to return as Lord of America. Lord, we humble ourselves before you with broken and contrite hearts, acknowledging our sin. Cause us to seek you with all of our heart, mind, and soul for you’ve said in your word that when we seek you with all of our heart we will find you – and oh! how we need to find you! Forgive us, Father, for turning away from you and doing what is right in our own eyes. Forgive the perversity of sin within our land. God, we implore you to hear us from heaven and heal our land. Father, heal our land not only of COVID-19, but of the moral and spiritual decay and bring back your glory. We invite you to once more be God in America.

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.
