Names of God: Jehovah-Tsidkenu

Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. Finally, because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, and respect God and to not use His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean. Today, we look at the name Jehovah-Tsidkenu

Today’s Name: Jehovah-Tsidkenu

An encounter with Jehovah-Tsidkenu

The prophet Jeremiah condemned the leaders of his day for misleading God’s people. In fact, they led the people into idolatry and caused them to forsake Jehovah. As a result, God brought judgement and the people were scattered when they were forced into exile and relocated. But through the prophet, Jeremiah, God promise to bring them back from all the place from which they had been scattered. Then He would bring blessings and raise Godly leaders to shepherd His people.

God then promises a King for his people. In Jeremiah 23:5-6, we find Jeremiah’s prophecy for Jehovah-Tsidkenu:

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

How is God Jehovah-Tsidkenu to us today?

Because of sin, there is no righteousness in us. Therefore, we are not able to stand before a holy and righteous God. But, because of His great love for us, Jesus paid the price for our sins. There is absolutely no way we are able to pay the debt ourselves. Only the sinless Son of God is able to cleanse us from our unrighteousness. When we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, he exchanges our unrighteousness for his righteousness. In doing so, the relationship we can have with a holy and righteous God is restored.

Jehovah-Tsidkenu, thank you that you are our righteousness. Without your loving sacrifice that paid for my sin, none of us would be able to be reconciled to God. Jehovah-Tsidkenu, we ask that you rule and reign in our lives, our homes, and our nation. Father, show us who You are as we discover and learn about your many names. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.
