Sin is a Heart Problem

The background for these verses begin in verse 1 of Mark 7 where we find the disciples eating bread and the Pharisees notice they are eating with unwashed hands. In Jesus’ day there was an oral tradition that came out of the laws God gave the Israelites regarding clean and unclean. These traditions became the heart of rabbinic Judaism and in regards to hand washing, the Pharisees did more than just ritually wash their hands – they thoroughly purified themselves. So they asked Jesus, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” Jesus points out that washing hands, does not wash hearts. Sin is a heart problem caused by an unclean heart.

When Rituals make us Hypocrites we have a heart problem

Jesus knew that this wasn’t a question of curiosity. Nor were they solely accusing the disciples. They were in reality accusing Jesus of not following the law himself and acting as if he believes himself to be above the law. In response, Jesus quotes Isaiah 7:6-7  and straight out calls the Pharisees hypocrites right to their face. He tells them that the prophet Isaiah accurately prophesied about them when he said, “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Their heart problem kept them caught up and bound up in the law – so much that they couldn’t recognize the Messiah was present among them.

So how does ritual hand washing make them hypocrites? Jesus gives the answer in verse 8: “For laying aside the commandment of God you hold the traditions of men.” In other words, the Pharisees twisted the commandment in order to side-step the law. Jesus was not rejecting the law. Instead he rebuked the Pharisees for not upholding it. The real issue here is not eating with unwashed hands, ritual purity, or oral traditions and who should or should not follow them. In quoting Isaiah, Jesus lets them know the real issue is a heart problem and their hearts are far from God. They were so caught up in keeping up with the traditions and rituals that there was no room for true worship.

What gets you into heaven?

So to the crowd that was around, Jesus wanted them to understand that it is not what you take into your body that qualifies you as unclean or impure. Instead, it’s what comes out of the heart that defile us. (Mark 7:15) Rituals and traditions don’t gain us entrance into heaven. Whether we sing the old hymns or contemporary music in church won’t get us into heaven. Whether there is a pulpit on the stage or not won’t get us into heaven. Nor does it matter if we sing the Doxology after the offering or not. You can memorize the books of the Bible and all the best known Bible verses – but it won’t get you into heaven.

You can memorize specific prayers and repeat them non-stop till you die, but it won’t get you into heaven. And you can pray to Mary, John the Baptist, St Paul, St Andrew, St. Matthew and all the other apostles – but they can’t get you into heaven either. You can live a highly moral life, but it won’t get you into heaven. You can’t buy your way in and no traditions or rituals will get you in. What gets us into heaven is a pure heart that has been forgiven through the faith we place in Christ as our Savior – nothing more – nothing less. The only cure to our sin infested heart problem is for our hearts to be washed in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb.

When we have a heart problem, it affects the whole person

Then as we come to verse 17, we find that the disciples didn’t get it and asked Him to explain what he had said. Jesus tells them that it is was is produced in the heart that affects the whole person. The heart is thought of the center of human will and rationality, as well as desire. It is the place from which all our intentions are birthed.

Jesus lists 13 moral heart problems to illustrate what He was teaching them. The first seven are all plural, indicating repeating acts. However, it only takes one sin to make us a sinner. Fornication includes all illicit sexual practices outside of marriage. Wickedness is used for anything malicious. The last six sins listed are all singular and are sinful attitudes. Lewdness refers to promiscuity. An evil eye means jealousy, envy, covetousness, and a grudging attitude. Blasphemy includes not just blasphemy against God, but slander of other people. Pride is exalting oneself above others. Foolishness is lack of moral judgment. We can find similar lists in Romans 1:29-31, Galatians 5:19-21, and 2 Timothy 3:2-5.

What pleases God?

When our heart problem is consumed with self-seeking desires, we become insatiable in pursing the things that please our self rather than pursing the things that please God. Ephesian 5:10 tells us that we need to discern the things that please God. So what pleases God?

  • Faith (Hebrews 11:6)
  • Offering ourselves as a living sacrifice to God, which is true worship (Romans 12:1)
  • Not being conformed to this world but renew our minds and discern God’s will (Romans 12:2)
  • Good deeds and growing in the knowledge of God (Galatians 1:10)
  • speaking as God wants us to (1 Thessalonians 2:4)
  • doing the will of God (1 John 2:17)
  • loving others (1 Thessalonians 4:9)
  • Sharing with others (Hebrews 13:16)
  • humble and contrite heart (Isaiah 57:15)
  • the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:14)
  • Working heartily, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23)
  • Obeying God rather than men (Acts 5:29)
  • fearing (awe, respect of) Him and placing our hope in his steadfast love (Psalm 147:10-11)
  • Walking as children of Light (Ephesians 5:8-10)
  • doing everything to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Just as the list of 13 sins come from within, so does what pleases God. It all comes down to the condition of our heart. Do we have a heart black with sin or a heart that has been cleansed by Christ and living for Him?

Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men – fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots – and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. Join MacArthur as he draws principles from Christ’s careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today’s modern disciple – you! Paperback.

Memory Verse

memory verse logoEach week we post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s memory verse:

Lamentations 3:22-23

Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Meditate and apply:

  1. God’s love for us isn’t dependent upon whether or not we feel His love. It isn’t upon what we do or don’t do. His love is faithful. Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!”
  2. Love isn’t just a “feeling” for God. 1 John 4:8 says that God is love. Love is part of His character and who He is.
  3. Because God is holy and righteous, and we are sinners that Isaiah describes as “something unclean” and he says that even “our righteous acts are like a polluted garment” (Isaiah 64:6), God could just strike us dead with our very first sin – but instead, His mercy never ends. It doesn’t run out. So God doesn’t expend all His mercy on my husband and then have none left for me. He doesn’t expend all His mercy on me this morning and have none left for this evening. His mercy never ends.
  4. God’s faithfulness to us is great even though our faithfulness to Him isn’t so great. We might make all kinds of promises to God – and at the time we make them, we have every intention of keeping them – but most often we keep them for a time and then before you know it, we slip back into our old ways again. We might have every intention of getting up early to read our Bible and pray, but when the alarm clock goes off, we turn it off without even opening an eye pull the covers back up and go back to sleep. Yet no matter how many mornings we do this, God faithfully and eagerly waits to spend time with us. Do you ever wonder if He is disappointed as we roll over and go back to sleep?  Even so, He will be there tomorrow morning waiting again – even if we disappoint Him…again.
  5. God is faithful to keep His promises – every one of them. Titus 1:2 tells us that “God cannot lie.” If He makes a promise, you can bet it will happen – just as He said. Joshua 23:14 says, “not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.” Check out this list of some of the promises that we have from God:
    • He promises eternal life for those who place their faith in Jesus – so we can know that we will have eternal life. 1 John 2:25
    • He promises a new heart. Ezekiel 36:26
    • He promises forgiveness. 1 John 1:9
    • He promised to give us the Holy Spirit. Luke 11:13
    • He promises us the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23
    • He promises the Holy Spirit will guide us and show us truth. John 16:13
    • He promises to meet our needs. Philippians 4:19
    • He promises to never withhold anything that is for our good. Psalm 84:11
    • He promises to give us wisdom. James 1:5
    • He promises to give us directions for the path we should take in life. Isaiah 30:21
    • He promises peace in the midst of life storms. Isaiah 26:3
    • He promises us victory over temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13
    • He promises us refuge. Psalm 91:4-6
    • He promises us deliverance from fear and anxiety. Psalm 34:4
    • He promises to be with us and walk beside us when we experience difficult times. Psalm 138:7
    • He promises us that the dead will live again. John 5:28-29,  1 Thessalonians 4:15-18
    • He promises us that He will come again. John 14:2-3
    • He promises us an end to death, sorrow, and pain. Revelation 21:4

God is…love, unending mercy, and faithful.

news and events

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Learn more about hosting this event at your church or conference site by clicking here.

Acts 10:34-35. No Partiality

Jul 02 Acts 10 34-35

This verse marks a trajectory shift in the life of the church and its mission – one where the gospel message is taken to the Gentile world. The only question is will the early church follow the God’s leading and embrace the change or not.

Both Peter and Cornelius were given separate visions that resulted in God bringing these two men together and they would experience a critical moment of decision and the church has been faced with the same decision throughout every generation since.

The problem: We find the problem in Acts 10:28 where social boundaries prevented Peter from associating with a Gentile. In verses 9-16, Peter is given a vision where heaven opens up and a great sheet bound at the four corners is lowered down to him. Inside were all kinds of four-footed animals, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds. A voice then instructs Peter to “kill and eat.” Because of Jewish food laws regarding “clean” and “unclean” meat, Peter replied, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” The voice replied, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” The vision occurred three times, even so, we see Peter very cautious about crossing the social boundaries until the very end of his encounter with Cornelius.

God’s solution: Jesus had already instructed his disciples in Acts 1:8 that there would be no geographical boundaries in the spreading of the gospel. He told them to go to Judea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the earth and the gospel was already spreading. In Acts 8, the Ethiopian eunuch was saved and baptized. Long before Peter and Cornelius’ divinely appointed meeting, Simeon declared in Luke 2:32 that Jesus would be both a light of revelation to the Gentiles and for Israel. Jesus crossed the social boundary with His encounter with the woman at the well. As Peter ministered alongside of Jesus, he would have seen Jesus go outside the social norms over and over again. And even with the vision, Peter is still uncertain.

At the same exact moment of Peter’s vision, Cornelius also receives a vision in which he is told him to send men to Joppa where Peter was staying and request that he come to Caesarea so that Peter could preach the gospel to him. Cornelius sent the men and explained the vision to Peter and Peter cautiously goes with the men – and he brings some of his own men with him. When Peter arrives, Cornelius tells him about his vision and God’s solution clicks with Peter. He tells Cornelius, “I truly understand that God shows no partiality.” This does not mean God accepts all people no matter their response to Him or that people who fear Him do not need Christ. Rather, it means that God does not restrict any nationality or ethnicity from the free gift of salvation. The same God that reached out to Peter in Joppa was at the very exact moment reaching out to Cornelius in Caesarea. The same God that reaches out to a person in America, is reaching out to people in England, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Scotland, Africa, Asia, Australia, and every other nation on the face of the earth. The gospel is the same no matter where you’re from, no matter the color of your skin, no matter the language you speak and it is the gospel that calls us all to the Savior. In the eyes of God, we are all equal and Jesus died for all of us. God never intended there to be divisions among us because of nationality. He commands us to go into every nation and tell people about Jesus.

Within our churches today, there should never be an unwelcomed person due to ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or any other label. The church’s mission is to bring the lost to Jesus and that’s what the church should be doing.
