This week’s verse:

Job 5:8-9

But as for me, I would seek God, And to God I would commit my cause — Who does great things, and unsearchable, Marvelous things without number.

Meditate and apply:

In a very short amount of time Job lost all that he had, but yet he recognized that ultimately God is in control of every life, whether for good or for adversity – and He is in control of our lives too. In Job 2:10, he tell his wife, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” Do we have Job’s insight and recognize that when calamity befalls us that God is in control?

Job certainly demonstrated that he experienced grief and mourned his losses, but the Bible says of him, “In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.” What comes out of our mouth when we are hurting and grieving?
Job had three friends that came to visit and offer their well-meant advice. Eliphaz said these things happened to Job because Job had sinned. Bildad and Zophar told Job he needed to repent – but Job knew that he was an upright man and innocent. In fact, in Job 1:8 God says of Job, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fear God and shuns evil?” Would God be able to describe you this way?
Job demonstrated that there are times, we need to not listen to the advice we receive. Rather than listen to the counsel of his friends, he knew that seeking God and committing his situation to Him was Job’s only hope. He believed that God was able to do great, unsearchable, and marvelous things. Are you more likely to seek the counsel of friends and family in difficult times, or do you turn to God?
God certainly places people in our lives to help us and to offer us Godly counsel. He can even speak to us through them – and in these cases we need to listen! However, sometimes, Satan can also use people in our lives. Throughout the entire story of Job, Satan’s only purpose was to get Job to curse God. When others offer us counsel, we need to weigh it against what God says in His Word. If it doesn’t measure up, then we need to consider that Satan may be trying to trip us up, just as he was trying to do with Job.
