Watch and Pray

Sin grows in the cracks of your prayer life

What happens when you forget to pray or don’t take time to pray? All you need to grow fine, vigorous grass is a crack in your sidewalk. Sin happens the same way. All you need to grow fine, vigorous sin is a crack in your prayer life. The roots of sin run deep. And if we are not constantly pruning and weeding our lives through prayer and reading the Bible, sin will push through the cracks and rear its ugly head and blossom into a full blown plant before we know it.

Because we all were born with a sin nature that makes us rebel against God. When given a choice to do God’s will or our own, our natural inclination is to do what we want.  If you want proof, just look at a young child. No one has to teach a child to lie or to be selfish. On the contrary, parents will go to great trouble to teach their child honesty and integrity and to love others more than themselves. Sinning comes naturally. Sin flows through our veins. Its woven into every atom and its in our DNA. Doing what’s right in the sight of God takes a constant conscious effort because temptation is everywhere. Therefor, we need to watch and pray. Watch out for the temptations that so easily ensnares us and pray for the strength to overcome temptation.

Don’t open the door to temptation and sin

A young, eager salesman was delivering a bid to an engineering firm. The man he was meeting with stepped away from his desk for a few moments and he noticed on the desk was the proposal from a competitor. He was unable to see the total amount of the bid due to a juice can that sat on top of the amount. The temptation was too much for him to resist and as he lifted the can to reveal the amount, thousands of BBs poured from the bottomless can. When we open the door to temptation and sin, they come pouring out all around us.

Temptation is the doorway that leads to sin and often when we open the door, we end up involved in many sins. For example, when we tell a lie, we often find we end up telling another lie to cover up the first lie until we end up weaving a web of lies that we can’t remember what we told to whom.

Watch and Pray

This is why Jesus taught his disciples to watch and pray. He knew that His followers were willing to obey His teachings, but that their flesh was weak. We are just like the disciples. As children of God, we are willing to obey Him, but we are just as weak as the they were. So we need to be constantly on our guard – watching for the seeds of temptation that Satan will throw in front of us. And when we see that temptation sticking through the crack, we need to weed it out with prayer and scripture. Quoting the promises from the Bible is exactly what Jesus did in His showdown with Satan. He overcame the temptations because He knew what the Scriptures said and when Satan twisted them up Jesus set him straight. This is why memorizing God’s Word and hiding it in our heart is so important.

So if we want to overcome temptation and sin, we need to watch and pray. We need to weed out sin with the truth of God’s Words and then turn and walk away from the temptation. Don’t sit around with it, admiring it . Walk away from it! The guilt that sin leaves behind is never worth the temporary pleasure found in the sin. So when temptation comes knocking, kneel in prayer.

Matthew 26:41. Watch and Pray

memory verse logo

James 4:7-8

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Psalm 130:5-6 Waiting on God

Aug 26 Psalm 130 5-6

Are you waiting on God? Have you spent years praying for something – and you’re still praying? Maybe you’ve prayed so long that you are just about to give up hope that God will ever answer. Be encouraged. Don’t give up! It only takes one prayer to change the course of history – and today just might be that one prayer. I have to wonder how many prayers go unanswered because someone stopped praying just one prayer before God moved. But even if you have to wait some more, never underestimate what God is doing behind the scenes. He is always at work and He will always work things your for your good.

So what do you do in the seasons of waiting? The following list are some suggestions to keep you both encouraged and to not lose hope in your faith.

  • Keep worshiping God and praising Him for what He is doing in your life.
  • Surrender what you are praying for to Him and say, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
  • Cling to His Word. Search scriptures for promises from God about His faithfulness, hearing our prayers, working everything out for our good, His mercy and lovingkindness, His love for us.
  • Search scriptures for what God doesn’t answer prayer and be sure there is nothing in your life that are hindering your prayers. If there is, confess and repent. If there isn’t, then know that at the right moment – God will answer. His timing is not the same as ours, but He has never answered even one prayer one moment late.
  • Don’t loose confidence in God’s goodness. You can see it all around you. So if you’re wavering, take time to notice God’s goodness.
  • Be strong. When you have no strength left to pray, then ask the Holy Spirit to give you His strength – and keep on praying.
  • Don’t lose hope. God knows your heart. He sees your pain. He knows where you are struggling. Sometimes, the very thing we are praying for and think we need so bad are the very things that would make us miserable. Sometimes the circumstances that we ask God to removed form our lives are the very ones He is using to make us more like Christ. Don’t lose hope. God is at work in you.
  • Be patient. We may not understand why God doesn’t answer right now or on our time table – but the answer will come when the timing is exactly perfect.
  • Allow God to be your shield and your help. While you are waiting, trust that God’s protection and provision will see you through until the answer comes. If you don’t know how to pray – ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you – it’s one of His jobs to pray for us when we don’t know how to pray.
  • Watch and see. When the children of Israel found themselves caught between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army, they immediately lost hope and began complaining to Moses. God told them through Moses to “watch and see.” God was not caught off guard and knew the army was coming. He already had a plan – He was just waiting for the right moment to put it into action. When the moment came, the Red Sea parted and the Israelites walked through on dry ground. If they had gone through earlier, they would have missed the power of God and the miracle. If God had waited any longer, the army may have caught up to them. But at just the right time God stepped in and all the Israelites had to do was watch and see and then walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. Watch and see. Notice how God is already at work around you and in your life. Trust His timing.
  • Spend time learning more about prayer. Mark Batterson’s Book, The Circle Maker and Priscilla Shirer’s book, Fervent, are great to get you started.
  • Consider prayer and fasting as you align your heart and mind to God and His will.

Psalm 5:3

Psalm 5 3

There is nothing better than starting the day with prayer. I am not a morning person at all! However, when I made the decision to make God the first priority of my day and spend time with him, my days always seemed to go better. I still have my share of difficult moments and problems to solve, but when I take the time to start my day reading God’s Word and praying, it gives me the strength I need to make it through whatever the day may bring. From Psalm 5:3, we learn four examples for us to follow from David’s prayer life.

When I take the time to start my day reading God’s Word and praying, it gives me the strength I need to make it through whatever the day may bring. — click to tweet

First, David made prayer a priority. Before David got busy with his day, he made sure to spend time with God. We when do, it shows a reverence towards God. Have you ever noticed that when you don’t start the day with prayer and Bible study that they day gets away from you and it never happens? You might have the best of intentions and mean to do it later, but life happens and times runs out and as you climb into bed exhausted you have no energy left to spend time with God. Did you know that Jesus also made it priority to pray in the morning? In Mark 1:35, we find that “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He [Jesus] go up, went out, and made His way to a deserted place. And He was praying there.” Do you have a place set aside where you will not be disturbed so you can be alone with God? Mine is the bathroom — seriously! I also get up before anyone else in my house so that the house is quiet and I can give God all my focus and attention.

We can have the best intentions and mean to do it later, but when we don’t start the day with prayer, life happens and time runs out and as we climb into bed exhausted there is no energy left to spend time with God. — click to tweet

Second, David expected and knew that God would hear him. In Psalm 5:3, David said, “you will hear my voice.” It wasn’t a plea for God to hear him. It wasn’t a hope that God would hear him. David knew that his prayers were heard. Because God is sovereign, God hears every word we say and even every thought. So we can be assured that God hears us when we pray. Nothing gets by Him. Psalm 139:1-4 says, “Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord.” God is the one who created prayer as a means of communicating with Him. We can be know without any doubt that he hears us. However, there are times where He does not listen.

  • Proverbs 28:9 tells us that when we deliberately turn a deaf ear to God’s instructions that our prayers are detestable to Him. We do this when we choose to hold on to a sin rather than repent and change.
  • James 4:3 tells us that God does not listen to our prayers when we ask Him for things out of our own selfish desires. If our motives are not aligned with God’s will, then they becomes selfish. This verses says, “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
  • 1 John 5:14 tells us that when we ask for something outside of God’s will, he will not listen to our prayers. This verse says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we asking anything according to his will, he hears us.” So before we ask God for anything, we need to be sure that what we are asking aligns with His will for our lives.
  • Mark 11:24 tells us that if do not ask in faith, God will not listen to our prayers. In this verse, Jesus said, “I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” So then, when we pray, we need to have the faith that God does hear us and that He will grant our requests when they are aligned to His will.

In Psalm 5:3, David said, “you will hear my voice.” It wasn’t a plea for God to hear him. It wasn’t a hope that God would hear him. David knew that his prayers were heard. — click to tweet

Are there times God does not hear our prayers? When we refuse to repent of sin (Prov 28:9), when we ask with wrong motives (James 4:3), when we ask outside of God’s will (1 John 5:14), or when we do not ask in faith (Mark 11:24) God will not hear us. — click to tweet

The third thing we can learn to model after David is to keep a prayer list. David ordered his prayers. They were not haphazard or unthought. Instead, he carefully arranged his prayers in a thought out manner. He took time to meditate, consider God’s laws, made sure His request was in line with God’s will. He made sure that he had repented of any sin before laying out His request to God. He had an order to His prayer. Think for a moment about the one famous person you’d like to have an opportunity to sit down and talk to. For me, it would be Priscilla Shirer. Whoever it is for you, if you were granted a one-hour meeting to talk to that person, you’d plan your conversation. You’d think about the questions you’d ask. If we would do that with another person, why would we not plan our prayer conversations with a sovereign, omnipotent God?

Another important aspect of keeping a prayer list is that when can put a date God answered next to each request so that when we come to a season of life where it seems that God is not working in our lives, we can look back at all the times before God answered our prayers and know that He is at work now, even if we can’t see it.

Our prayers should be ordered – not haphazard. We need to take time to meditate, consider God’s laws and God’s will before we bring a request to Him.  — click to tweet

The fourth thing we learn from David’s prayer life is that he eagerly watched for God to answer. If we have confessed our sins, examined our motives, searched God’s will, and have prayed in faith, than we can expect God to answer so we need to be watching for how God answers. It might be exactly as we asked, or it might be something even better than we could think to ask. It could also be in a way that we did not ask. David eagerly watched. It’s the kind of “eagerly” that we’d described as “sitting on the edge of his seat” just waiting and watching to see what God would do.

When David prayed, he eagerly watched and expected God to answer. It’s as if he was “sitting on the edge of his seat” just waiting and watching for what God would do. — click to tweet.

Making prayer a priority in our lives becomes easy when God is priority. There should be an eager desire to talk with God, spend time with him, learn more about him, and to know His will for our lives. If you do not already start our day with prayer, what’s stopping your from making prayer a priority in your life?

Matthew 26:41. Overcoming Temptation

Feb 11 Matthew 26 41 KJV

All you need to grow fine, vigorous grass is a crack in your sidewalk. Sin happens the same way. All you  need to find yourself in a fine, vigorous sin is a crack in your prayer life. Jesus taught his disciples to watch and pray. He knew that His followers were willing to obey His teachings, but that our flesh is weak. Our strength to experience victory over temptation is through prayer.

Temptation is the doorway that leads to sin and often when we open the door, we end up involved in many sins. For example, when we tell a lie, we often find we end up telling another lie to cover up the first lie until we end up weaving a web of lies that we can’t remember what we told to whom.

When temptation comes knocking, kneel in prayer. Quotes the promises from the Bible. Then turn and walk away from the temptation. The guilt that sin leaves behind is neve worth the temporary pleasure found in the sin.
