Seizing, Creating, and Capturing Opportunity to Witness

The message of Jesus, what he has done and what he has accomplished has been the message of all eternity. From the moment of the fall of man, God forecasted this king that would come. And that message has gone out. And many of you who are reading this have heard the message and have embraced who Jesus Christ is. Others have heard, but do not believe. And some have yet to hear. In Acts 13, Luke has preserved for us Paul’s first recorded sermon and how the apostle Paul presented Jesus to the world. If we are going to be a church on mission, it is up to us to witness and take the gospel message to the ends of the earth so that all may know that through this man, Jesus, they can have their sins forgiven and have eternal life.

Paul: A Witness for Jesus at Antioch in Pisidia

In Acts 13:13-15, we find the setting to which Paul’s first sermon occurs: This is the second leg of Paul 1st missionary journey. They left Paphos and came Perga in Pamphylia. Here John left them and returned to Jerusalem. From Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia and on the Sabbath day, they went to the synagogue and sat down. In Paul’s day, the worship service had elements that would be universal no matter what synagogue you went to. They would quote the Shema – “Hear O Israel the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” They would have done it in Hebrew; there would have been a reading from the Law and from the prophets. And normally the custom was that someone would give a sermon or an exegesis of part of the text.

Well two visitors were there that day. And one of them, Paul, had been brought up under the tutelage of one of the greatest Jewish teachers of their day – Gamaliel. So they turn to Paul and they ask them, do you have something to say? Do you have an exhortation for the people? And Paul takes the opportunity that’s been presented and uses that platform to be a witness for Jesus. From Paul’s sermon in Acts 13, we can learn how Paul presented Jesus and discover some timeless truths about how we can be a witness of Jesus with the world.

Seize opportunities to witness

When the religious leaders invited Paul to speak, he didn’t say, “I’m new to the faith and still learning. Maybe next time I pass through, I’ll speak.” In verse 16, “Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen.” So, obviously, in a Jewish synagogue, Paul was speaking to the “men of Israel” – the Jews. But then we see the word “and” — “And you who fear God.” So, who were those who fear God? These were Gentile believers who were at the synagogue to learn more about Jesus. Normally the God-fearers would not be addressed. They sat in the back, and were not talked to. Paul addresses them particularly. He seizes the opportunity & he’s going to make the most of it. He wants everyone present to know the message is intended for them.

Creating opportunity to witness

Paul created the opportunity to be in the right place at the right time so that he could be a witness and tell the gospel message. Of course, that started by listening to the direction of the Holy Spirit and where He wanted Paul to go. Then Paul traveled hundreds of miles by foot, then boat, then by foot again across rugged, mountainous terrain and finally arrived at Antioch of Pisidia. Traveling that far took planning, effort, prayer, and sacrifice. It would require money out of Paul’s own pocket and trust in God to provide along the way. It also required a willing heart. And when you combine all this together we find Paul in a position where opportunity was created for Paul to be a witness and proclaim the gospel message to an audience of interested listeners.

Capture the opportunity to witness

There is no one way to witness and share the gospel message that is the “right way.” Sharing the gospel message is as simple as sharing Jesus. You tell them about Jesus — that’s it. Tell the good news. Be a witness to what God has done in your own heart and life. In verse 32, Paul says, “And we declare to you glad tidings—that promise which was made to the fathers.” What is the promise? We find it in verse 23: “From this man’s seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior—Jesus.”

To be a witness we have to tell both the Bad news and the Good news

The gospel message has both bad news and good news. The bad news we can find in Romans 3:23 which tells us that every one of us are sinners and fall short of the glory of God and Romans 6:23 which tells us that the wages of sin is death. The payment (wages) of our sin is eternal death in hell.

But the good news of the gospel message is in John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting lie. We can also see good news in Romans 6:23. After this verse tells us that the wages of our sin is death, we find the word, “but”. We deserve death “but” there is hope because the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The good news is that through this man, Jesus, we have a gift from God. Jesus paid the wages of our sin for us and gives us eternal life.

The Gift of eternal life

Eternal life is a gift from God. We can’t forget that it is a gift. We can’t earn it. And we can’t ever be good enough. There is no penance we can pay that will wipe out our sin debt. There are no prayers that will pray us out of purgatory or hell. Salvation from our sins is a gift. The minute we try to attach something we do to earn it, it ceases to be a gift. All we have to do is reach out by faith and accept God’s free gift.

Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” It is only by our faith in Jesus and who he is — the Son of God — and what He did — He died in our place, paying our sin debt for us then rose again that we can come to Him and ask Him to forgive us and save us from our sin. Faith is the hand by which we reach out and accept God’s free give of salvation.

Paul was a Witness by taking a walk through History

Paul’s 1st recorded sermon is very similar to Stephan’s. If Paul would witness to the Jews, he needed to connect all the dots of Israel’s history so they could see God at work to fulfill His promise of a Savior and that He fulfilled that promise through the man, Jesus of Nazareth. He then takes them through the major elements of Israel’s history with great intentionality, recounting their history for them with the destination already in mind – the destination is Jesus.

Beginning with verse 17, Paul starts with God, an all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign God. Then at verse 21, Paul recounts Israel’s first two kings, bringing David to the forefront and he reminds them of a promise: “From your seed, from your descendants, I’m going to establish your house; I’m going to establish your throne forever. It’s going to be an eternal position; an eternal person. You may want to build me a house but I’m going to build you a sure house. He uses David – this huge point of agreement – to plant the seed which culminates with Jesus. In verse 23, Paul says, “Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.”

All of history to that point had lead up to this moment of Jesus – the Savior of the world. For Paul to be an effective witness, the people had to understand how God had orchestrated the events of history so that at the right moment and time, Jesus would step down from the glory and splendor of heaven to become the sacrificial payment for our sins and thereby extend the free gift of salvation to all who would believe in Him.

Witnesses of the Gospel Message

Now that Paul has reached his destination of Jesus – he tells about the witnesses who can testify of Jesus; to testify to the authenticity and the reality that Jesus is the Messiah and the Savior. He starts with John the Baptist and then those who put Jesus to death. They killed Jesus precisely because of his Messianic claims!” And in doing so they fulfilled the prophecies told about Him. Their condemnation of Jesus is actually a testimony to the validity of Jesus, because they were fulfilling the prophecies foretold about Jesus. The religious leaders who rejected Jesus actually become Paul’s best witness in his case for Christ – because they fulfilled to a T all that the prophecies predicted would happen.

The cross isn’t the end of the Gospel message

Verses 29- 30 then concludes: “they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead.” Jesus dying on the cross isn’t the end of the gospel message. If Jesus had stayed in the tomb, where is the good news? If he had stayed in the tomb, he would be no different than Mohammad or Buddha. They are both still in their tombs – dead. But Jesus didn’t stay dead. He conquered death and rose again. As Christians, we not only have our sins forgiven and have received the gift of eternal life, but we serve a living Savior- not a dead one.

Paul then brings in his next witnesses. In Verse 31, Paul says, “and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.” These are people that are still alive as Paul is giving this address. They are the witnesses that they could go to and talk with in person and hear all about how Jesus walked with them, ate with them, and taught them for 40 days after his resurrection and before he ascended into heaven. Every prophecy, every prediction, every type and shadow – they all find their fulfillment in Jesus. So not only does history CULMINATE in Jesus, the witnesses present CONFIRM Jesus.

God is still orchestrating the events of History

Do you believe there is a divine plan behind all of history? Is God orchestrating all that happens to accomplish his purposes? Does this world really make sense to you? If you’re a believer in Jesus you understand that God is sovereign and that he is orchestrating all the events on the planet up to the coming of Jesus. But God’s sovereignty in the world’s history did not stop at Jesus’ first coming, God is still orchestrating all the events of history which are leading up to Christ’s second coming to this planet where he sets up his eternal rule forever. That is where history is going. And it’s not going there haphazardly, randomly it’s going there under the direction of a Sovereign God.

The fate of many in our world are dependent on us creating and seizing the opportunity to tell them good news of the gospel message. Go capture your opportunity today!

Let’s BE the Church

Spreading the Gospel

When Jesus gave the great commission He told the disciples they were to scatter outward from Jerusalem to be witnesses for Him. Because of the Christians being persecuted in Jerusalem, they had little choice. Therefore, persecution became a significant point in the development of the early church. By spreading out to Judea, Galilee, and Samaria they created the second stage of growth of the church as they took the gospel message outside of Israel and into the Gentile world. Whenever we take the gospel outside our sphere, the result is always the same: the church grows. The great commission was not just Jesus’ mandate to the disciples. It is Jesus’ mandate to the church today and we need to be the church.

What is the Church?

We often refer to “church” as the building where we go to fellowship with other believers. But the Church is more than brick and mortar, carpet and pews, choirs and praise teams. The Church is actually the body of believers. In fact, the word “church” in the original language means “crowd.” So, the church, then, is made up of the crowd of people who have surrendered their life to Christ. Therefore, there is only one church. However, within the Church, there are local congregations that meet and gather to worship God and encourage one another. So when we talk about the church growing, we’re not talking about a Building Campaign to build a bigger sanctuary. We’re talking about adding souls into the Kingdom of God.

We often refer to “church” as the building where we go to fellowship with other believers. But the church is more than brick & mortar, carpet & pews, choirs & praise teams. The Church is actually the body of believers-people who have surrendered their life to Christ. Therefore, there is only one church.

From Acts 9:31 we see three things that helped the church grow. We can use these same three principles today so that the church can see substantial growth once again. Acts 9:31 says:

Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

1. They were edified

To edify means to build one another up. The world does a great job at tearing others down, but this should not be true of Christians. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul wrote that the church was to “encourage one another and build one another up. Jude wrote, “you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20). And in Ephesians 4:29, we can see what it looks like to build one another up: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

How much would the church grow today if we edified one another rather than tearing each other down?

2. The early Church walked in the fear of the Lord

Most of us today have been walking in the fear of a pandemic for the past year. But “fearing the Lord” doesn’t mean to be afraid. Simply put, the early church had respect and reverence for the law of God. “To walk in the fear of the Lord” then means they obeyed His laws. God’s laws are not suggestions. They are not meant to be obeyed just on Sunday morning when we dress our best and walk through the church doors. Rather we are to walk in His law and in His truths day and night.

Psalm 1:2 says, “His delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.” This means that we dwell on God’s word, taking it into our hearts, and apply it to our lives as the Holy Spirit works within us. Walking in the fear of the Lord isn’t just for when others are watching us. It’s also for when no one is watching.

How would the church grow today, if we walked in the fear of the Lord? How would our lives be different? Would our homes be different? Would our marriages be different? How would our finances be different?

3. They were in the comfort of the Holy Spirit

As a church that was being persecuted, they needed the power and comfort of the Holy Spirit enabling them to be bold and continue telling the gospel message despite the persecution they faced. Most of the apostles were not only persecuted, they were eventually put to death for their faith. As they watched their fellow apostles die, they would have the comfort, strength, and boldness to continue spreading the gospel in the Holy Spirit.

Some parts of the world today still see persecution of Christians. If Satan were to have his way, he’d stamp out all of Christianity and he sure is trying to get his way! But just as the Holy Spirit was the source of comfort in the early church, so He is today and He accomplishes it through the word of God, through inspiring others around us with messages and words that bring us comfort, and He can directly minister comfort to our hearts. Just as His work helped the early Christians be bold witnesses for Christ, so it can help us today.

How would our churches grow if every Christian accepted the comfort of the Holy Spirit so they could boldly proclaim the name of Jesus?

What would the early church have to say about the church today?

I often wonder if the saints of the early church could see the church of today, what would they think of us? Many of them were martyred for their faith – but they told the world of their day about Jesus anyway. They new that to be bold witnesses for Christ it would eventually catch up with them and cost them their lives.

While there are some countries who still live with the same fear the disciples did, today, many Christians’ only fear to spread the gospel is a fear of what others will think about them. We sit within our pretty churches, raising our hands in praise and prayer, but when asked to go and witness, we’d rather hide under the pew. But church – the lost who are dying and going to hell are depending on us to be the church and tell them about Jesus.

It’s time the church today arises and does the work of the church. We need to edify, walk in the fear of the Lord, and dwell in the comfort of the Holy Spirit who enables and empowers us to boldly go forth to tell the gospel message to a lost and dying world.

So church – let’s be the church!

You Shall be My Witnesses

Spreading the Gospel Message

If social media, or YouTube, or podcasting were around in the days of the disciples it sure would have made their task a whole lot easier. But instead, they had to travel — by foot — to spread the message of the gospel so that everyone would hear it. As Jesus ascended into heaven, He told the disciples in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The disciples were the ones who had an eyewitness account of all that occurred in the life of Jesus and the only way His story would be told was through the mouths of those disciples whom He had called to be His witnesses.

Receiving Power

There are many kinds of power. There is natural power, such as solar power and lightning storms. We also have natural forces such as tornadoes, hurricanes, tidal wave, and earthquakes. There is political, financial, military, and informational power. Explosive power comes from guns, rocket engines, TNT, Dynamite, C-4, and the atom bomb. But no power can rival that which Paul encountered on the Road to Damascus — a power able to transform and redeem a soul from death to life. There’s only one power that can deliver, redeem, transform, and empower a human being: the Holy Spirit! If we would win this nation back to God or see a revival in America, we must go back to God’s original plan and be His witnesses.

Prior to the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came like a mighty rushing wind, He did not consistently reside with believers. This is why David prayed in Psalm 51:11, “Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.” Throughout the old testament, we find where the Spirit of God would empower a person for a time, but the Spirit did not indwell believers prior to Acts 2:2.

Wait for the Power

So Jesus instructed the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit. As they were all gathered together in one place, Acts 2:2 tell us that suddenly a sound came from heaven that was like a rushing mighty wind and it filled the whole house. Then there appeared divided tongues, like fire, and one sat upon each of them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Today, we might not get mighty rushing winds and tongues of fire that sit on us, but we do get the same powerful Holy Spirit at the moment that we ask Jesus to be our Savior. From that moment on, the Holy Spirit lives and dwells inside each believer, empowering them for the purpose God gives to them and guiding them throughout their lives.

We need to recognize that the power of the Holy Spirit is essential to being effective witnesses. In Luke 24:49, Jesus told the disciples that they would be his witnesses but that they were to stay in the city until they had been clothed with power. He knew they couldn’t do the task under their own power and so He would send them the Holy Spirit who would give them power. And in Acts 1:8 Jesus says that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them – then they will be His witnesses. It is this power of God given to us that sets Christianity apart from all other religions.

While the disciples had to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit to come upon them, we do not. We receive the Holy Spirit and all His power the moment we ask Jesus to be our Savior.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

In Genesis 1:2, the “Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” The Egyptians saw Him as a Pillar of fire separating them from God’s people. King Dave saw Him as the “precious anointing oil” which flowed down Aaron’s garments in Psalm 133:2. Isaiah saw him as a Royal Robe filling God’s temple. John the Baptist saw Him as a beautiful which dove which case and settled on Jesus at His baptism. Joel saw him as a gentle rain which would make righteousness grow (Joel 2:23). Peter and the disciples experienced Him as a Hurricane force wind rushing down in mighty torrents form heaven. Ezekiel and John saw him as a River of Living Waters flowing out of God’s temple.

What is the power of the Holy Spirit able to do? He formed the vast reaches of space. He created suns as large as our solar system and galaxies to numerous to know. He orders the universe and holds the stars in space. The Holy Spirit can suspend or supersede the laws of the universe. He is beyond the physical realm and doesn’t live in time. He is the “Spirit”, “Wind”, “Breath” of God. The Holy Spirit is the active Presence of God. And He lives inside of every believer, empowering them to go and tell the gospel message.

Same Power – Same Task

Just as the disciples were empowered and tasked with spreading the gospel message, so are we. Compared to the disciples, we have it much easier. A simple post of a Bible verse on social media and we’ve spread the gospel. When we live in a way that honors God and reflects His nature, we witness. When we praise God for what He has done in our lives, we are witnessing.

We live in a nation where we don’t have to fear (at least not yet) sharing our faith. The disciples however, ended up being tortured and martyred – yet still they spread the gospel. We really have no excuse for not being witnesses. Yet we act like we fear for our lives and keep our mouths clamped shut. We act like we have no Holy Spirit power. And for every missed opportunity to tell someone about Jesus, is a chance that person will spend eternity in hell. Go and witness!

Satan wants us timid and scared to share our faith. He wants us so concerned about what others will think that we choose to stay quiet. The next time you feel the Holy Spirit nudging you to share your faith, ask Him to empower you and make you as bold as the disciples. The only way the lost will find their way to Jesus, is if we tell them. Jesus said, “You shall be my witnesses.” Go and witness!

The Marching Orders

As Christians, we are part of the army of God and Jesus is our Commanding officer. The order has been issued! In Luke 24:45-47, Jesus said, “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” And here in Acts 1:8 Jesus repeated the command, saying, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” So when he issued the command, he also gave us the power of the Holy Spirit to carry out that command.

Jesus also commissioned us to be his witnesses. In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus said, “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” So remember that whenever you witness to someone, Jesus is there with you. Go and witness!

Asking for help

Jesus knew that living for Him and being His witness would not be easy. Part of the job of the Holy Spirit is to intercede and pray for us. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul tells us, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

So before you witness, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Ask Him to prepare the heart of the person you will witness to and make them receptive to the gospel message. Ask Him to bind up Satan so that He will have no power over you or the person to whom you will witness. And ask him to give you boldness and to put His words in your mouth. Lastly, ask him to intercede and pray for you as your share the gospel message. With His help, we can go and witness!

No One Left Behind

In movies, we often hear soldiers say they will not leave a man behind. We need to have the same mentality in a spiritual sense. One day, Jesus will come again and all of us who have believed in Him as our Savior will be instantly gone. Those left behind will be the ones that either we didn’t witness to or chose to reject the gospel message. Who do you know that will be left behind after the rapture? Go and witness!

If we loved our neighbors as Jesus loves us, we wouldn’t want one single person in hell or left behind in the rapture. If we understood the horror of hell, we wouldn’t want anyone there. And if we understood the calamities that await those left behind, we’d want none left behind. We will one day stand before God and have to give an account for how we lived. Should He ask you, “Who did you witness to while on earth?” How would you answer Him? What if He started reading off the names of those He placed in your life to witness to, but you chose to keep quiet? Would that list be long or short? How many of those died lost and will spend eternity in hell because you were quiet? How many people will approach you in heaven and say, “Thank you for telling me about Jesus?”

You Will Be My Witnesses

Our Commander and King of kings has issued our marching orders. Our orders are to be His witnesses. We may not be eyewitnesses to Jesus time on earth like the disciples were, but we do have the Bible and the account of the eyewitnesses Jesus appointed. Not only do we have their eyewitness account, but we are eyewitnesses to what Jesus has done in our own lives. We are eyewitnesses to what our life was like before Jesus was our Savior and how He changed us, cleansed us, redeemed us, and made us new. When we witness to others, we simply tell them what our life was like before knowing Jesus, how we came to know Him, and how He has changed us since He saved us. It’s that easy. So be a witness today. Don’t be responsible for leaving someone behind. Go and witness!

Do Unto Others

A breakthrough idea: Do unto others

It’s easy to treat people well when you like them and things are good between you. But how do you treat people who cut you off in traffic, skip in line at the grocery store, the people who hurt or disappoint you? How do you treat others when you don’t feel understood, supported, or appreciated? Don’t we tend to try to justify how we treat them based on how they treat us? In Luke 6:31, Jesus gives us a breakthrough idea in how we are to respond to and treat others. He says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Creating a different world simply with “Do unto others.”

Let me ask you a question: Have you ever been distracted in your driving and accidentally cut off someone else? Or have you been dealing with an irritable child and without realizing it jumped in line at the grocery store not really intending to? Have you ever hurt or disappointed someone? Or have you ever not supported someone dreams and aspirations in life? More than likely you can say yes to at least one (if not all) of those questions. In those moments, how would you want others to treat you?

You would want them to understand the situation you are in and show you grace, compassion, and forgiveness, right? Well Jesus said that however you want people to treat you, is how you should treat others. Even if the other person’s intentions were purely malicious, we are to treat them the same way we would want others to treat us. What a different world we would live in if everyone lived this way!

A New Mentality: Do unto others as Christ did for us

Let’s take it a step further. What if Jesus treated us the way we deserve to be treated rather than showing us grace, compassion, and forgiveness? If He did, then none of us would have even small chance of eternity in  heaven. We’d all get exactly what we deserve – Hell. Instead, Christ demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, He died for us. None of us deserve the sacrifice Jesus made – but it was because He loved us, even when we are our ugliest and most sinful selves that He gave His life for us. How we treat others can be a witness to the Savior that lives within us – so are you showing Christ to the world in how you treat others?

If Jesus can love us, even while we are yet sinners and at our most unlovable state He gave His life for us, than we can love others even when they treat us horribly. It doesn’t mean we make excuses for their behavior and just accept it. There are times when we must confront behavior, but it should never be a reaction based on our anger. Sometimes we need to take a few moments and walk away to pray and process our own thoughts and emotions before we confront the other person. It is helpful to consider two questions: 1) What else is going on in the other person’s life that could be causing them to act the way they are? 2) How would I want to be treated in this situation?

Today, Do Unto Others

Today, will you commit to taking a moment to think about how you would want to be treated when others are not treating you as they should and then treat them the way you want to be treated?

God, help us when we are mistreated, not supported, underappreciated, and being taken advantage of to show others the same love, grace and forgiveness that you have shown to us and in doing so, we show them the love of Christ.

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.
