Romans 8:28

Romans 8 28 autumn

by Julia Bruce

Life is unpredictable. In just one breath, it can get really messy, really quick and we feel like the rug was yanked out from under our feet. It is easy to trust God will life is great, but do we trust Him when life is a mess? Do we trust him with the unpredictable? When there is a miscarriage, a cancer diagnosis, a death of a loved one, a job lay off, a spouse announces he/she wants a divorce, a child is sick?

I am reminded of the lyrics in Laura Story’s song, Blessings:

We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear.
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near.
We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love.
As if every promise from Your word is not enough.

All, the while, You hear each desperate plea.
And long that we’d have faith to believe.

Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops?
What if your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near?

No matter what life throws at us, we can know with every confidence that God is always near. Nothing that happens in our lives is a surprise to Him. In fact, God knew that messy moment you are going through was going to happen and He has been preparing you for this moment. He has brought people into your lives to help you through. He whispers scripture across your heart that will bring comfort and peace. He will speak to you through the words of a pastor’s sermon or a song on the radio. In every messy moment, Jesus says: “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, HCSB).

As a child of God, you can trust that He is working everything out for your good.

Couple Challenge: Conversation Starter

254

As a married couple, you are part of a team. A good team can communicate well. They have united goals and work towards a common end. Each person on the team contributes to their fair share of the responsibilities. Team members support one another, just as ligaments support and join together our bodies. They understand and accept the uniqueness of each other. They recognize the skills and strengths each person brings to a team, as well as the weaknesses, and they work together to build up the weaknesses. A good team has a strong leader. A good team knows how to both work and have fun. They know when to get down to business and when they need to rest. Which of these areas shows your marriage is a good team? Which are lacking or not present? What can you do to be a better team?
