Psalm 130:5-6 Waiting on God

Aug 26 Psalm 130 5-6

Are you waiting on God? Have you spent years praying for something – and you’re still praying? Maybe you’ve prayed so long that you are just about to give up hope that God will ever answer. Be encouraged. Don’t give up! It only takes one prayer to change the course of history – and today just might be that one prayer. I have to wonder how many prayers go unanswered because someone stopped praying just one prayer before God moved. But even if you have to wait some more, never underestimate what God is doing behind the scenes. He is always at work and He will always work things your for your good.

So what do you do in the seasons of waiting? The following list are some suggestions to keep you both encouraged and to not lose hope in your faith.

  • Keep worshiping God and praising Him for what He is doing in your life.
  • Surrender what you are praying for to Him and say, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
  • Cling to His Word. Search scriptures for promises from God about His faithfulness, hearing our prayers, working everything out for our good, His mercy and lovingkindness, His love for us.
  • Search scriptures for what God doesn’t answer prayer and be sure there is nothing in your life that are hindering your prayers. If there is, confess and repent. If there isn’t, then know that at the right moment – God will answer. His timing is not the same as ours, but He has never answered even one prayer one moment late.
  • Don’t loose confidence in God’s goodness. You can see it all around you. So if you’re wavering, take time to notice God’s goodness.
  • Be strong. When you have no strength left to pray, then ask the Holy Spirit to give you His strength – and keep on praying.
  • Don’t lose hope. God knows your heart. He sees your pain. He knows where you are struggling. Sometimes, the very thing we are praying for and think we need so bad are the very things that would make us miserable. Sometimes the circumstances that we ask God to removed form our lives are the very ones He is using to make us more like Christ. Don’t lose hope. God is at work in you.
  • Be patient. We may not understand why God doesn’t answer right now or on our time table – but the answer will come when the timing is exactly perfect.
  • Allow God to be your shield and your help. While you are waiting, trust that God’s protection and provision will see you through until the answer comes. If you don’t know how to pray – ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you – it’s one of His jobs to pray for us when we don’t know how to pray.
  • Watch and see. When the children of Israel found themselves caught between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s army, they immediately lost hope and began complaining to Moses. God told them through Moses to “watch and see.” God was not caught off guard and knew the army was coming. He already had a plan – He was just waiting for the right moment to put it into action. When the moment came, the Red Sea parted and the Israelites walked through on dry ground. If they had gone through earlier, they would have missed the power of God and the miracle. If God had waited any longer, the army may have caught up to them. But at just the right time God stepped in and all the Israelites had to do was watch and see and then walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. Watch and see. Notice how God is already at work around you and in your life. Trust His timing.
  • Spend time learning more about prayer. Mark Batterson’s Book, The Circle Maker and Priscilla Shirer’s book, Fervent, are great to get you started.
  • Consider prayer and fasting as you align your heart and mind to God and His will.

Joshua 5:14

March 21 Joshua 5 15 NKJV

God had a God-sized task for Joshua. It would not be possible for Joshua to accomplish on his own strength. What was the task? To lead the entire nation of Israel into the land that God had promised them. Moses, Joshua’s mentor, had just died and now Joshua was the leader for the nation – appointed by God. The first order of business was to seize Jericho.

The Bible tells us in verse 13, “And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho…” I have a very good imagination. Have you ever come to a verse like that and say, “Ok…but what was he doing there?” I can imagine as Joshua stood looking at the well fortified city, contemplating how to accomplish God’s plan, he felt like the task was impossible. As he looked at the walls surrounding the city – walls thick enough that people made their homes inside the walls – he might of prayed, “Yahweh, how am I supposed to accomplish this? It’s impenetrable!” Then maybe God recalled to Joshua’s mind how they had just crossed the Jordan river on dry ground, which recalled how the previous generation had crossed the Red Sea on dry ground. Maybe Joshua’s next thought was, “I’m not able to do this, Yahweh, but you are. Show me how I’m supposed to do this work for you.” As he stood there, he looked up and saw a man with a sword stood there with him. Joshua asked, “Are you for us or against us?” As he asked, his hand might have been on the hilt of his sword ready to draw it as his eyes scanned the area around them to see if there was an entire army lurking nearby, maybe wishing he had brought a few of his own soldiers with him. The man’s response? “I am the commander of Yahweh’s army.” When I imagine that scene in my head I can see this commander’s eyebrow raised as if to say, “Did you call? Here I AM.”

Joshua’s task was impossible for Joshua to accomplish. It was not impossible for God, because there is nothing impossible for God. But it was a God-sized task. Such tasks can only be accomplished when God steps in with His plan and clears the way. So God sent the Commander of His army to tell Joshua the battle plan as well as to encourage Joshua for the task ahead. So who is this Commander? Joshua’s response gives us the answer: Joshua “fell on his face to the earth and worshiped” Him. Further, the Commander then responded with “Take your sandal off your foot for the place where you stand is holy.” When God spoke to Moses at the burning bush, Moses was also told to remove his sandals because he was on holy ground.  Joshua needed help. He needed wisdom. And God sent His commander – Jesus – to provide Joshua with the battle plan. Joshua’s response was a true act of worship: “he fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him. ‘What does my Lord say to His servant?'”

God will never give us a God-sized task without showing us the plan for accomplishing the task. He will encourage us along the way. And when it’s time to advance, He will provide the plan of action. The question becomes: How will I respond? Will I whine and complain about the impossibility of the task? Will I argue with God about how it can’t be done? Will I pull my pockets inside out and say, “I don’t have the money and resources to accomplish this plan!” Or will I humbly bow before Him, ready to obey, and ask “What does my Lord say to His servant?”

God, whenever you have a God-sized task for us, you never leave us to complete it on our own. Instead you are there with wisdom, instruction, and encouragement along the way. Thank you for using imperfect people like me to accomplish your plan. Humbly, I bow before you and ask, what does my Lord say to His servant?”

Mark 7:6 – Can You Honor God with Your Lips but Still Have A Heart Far from God?

Feb 27 Mark 7 6 NKJV

I love the praise and worship songs Pastor Jonathan leads us in every Sunday. The lyrics as I sing along praise and magnify Jesus. Yet, if in my heart I’m angry, have unresolved conflict with another person, or have unconfessed sin that I hang on to, then I can sing the great praise words all day and still have a heart far from God. Or we could sing along, but not have yet accepted Christ as Savior, like the religious leaders in Jesus’ day. They practiced all the rituals, memorized the scripture,  and led pious lives but denied Jesus as the Messiah even though He stood right in front of them. Jesus called them hypocrites.

Anytime worship is merely outward and not from the heart, than it is nothing more than a hypocritical worship. True purity and worship is a matter of inward love and a right attitude, not just outward actions and religious rituals. You can do all the right “things” and still not do them for the right reasons. True worship is always accompanied by a lifestyle of a true heart commitment to God.

If our heart is right than our words will follow and they will honor God. What words are said in rush hour traffic with the “road bully” that cuts you off? What words are said in an argument with your spouse. What words do you use when you talk about your spouse to others? Do you participate in the office gossip? Do you use cuss words?

When we make God Lord of our life, then we make Him Lord over all parts of us – whether that’s our lips and the words we say, our eyes and what we choose to view on the internet or TV, our ears in what we listen to, our feet in where we go, our minds and the thoughts we dwell on, or our hands in the actions they do. You can’t have God Lord of your life in the great praise and worship time on Sunday mornings and not Lord the rest of the week. Otherwise, we are just like the hypocritical religious leaders of Jesus’ day.

Lord, may our lips honor you from a heart of true worship. May they sing your praise and tell of your great love and grace with hearts that honor you. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
