Why is Peace So Elusive?

by guest writer Frances Coffield

Peace. As we see the news and events unfolding in the Ukraine, Christians all over the world are praying. We’ve seen pictures of people in the Ukraine on bended knee in the snow praying for God to intervene. We hear stories about people running to the subways for safety. Over 500,000 have fled the Ukraine to the eastern edge of the European Union.1 These people have chosen to leave everything behind, not knowing what will be there when they return – or if they will return.

While we watch the news or browse the news websites for updated information, an entire nation sits in fear. Those of us around the world who are not directly involved may not have to sleep in cold, drafty subways while trying to calm the fears of our children, but our sense of peace is disturbed. So I have chosen to bring back this post that my mother wrote for us last year.

As you read today’s devotional, I pray that you will pray for the Ukraine nation. Pray for Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy’s safety as he stands beside his people. Pray for their military, who are fighting for the most precious human commodity – freedom. I pray that God will stir up the Christians in our nation and around the world to be zealous for Him. Will you join us in praying for the Ukraine nation and for a spiritual revival in whatever country you live in? If so, in the comments, write “Praying for Ukraine and revival in [your country’s name].”

Why is Peace So Elusive? by Fran Coffield

We live in a world filled with turmoil, lies, deceit, murders. There are gang wars, national wars, family wars, even wars within many churches. Yet, Jesus said, “Peace I give unto you.” (John 14:27). So, why is peace so elusive?

Spiritual Adultery Kindles God’s Wrath

In the 25th chapter of Numbers, we find that God’s people sinned by committing spiritual adultery, in other words, they left God to worship the idol, Baal. As a result, the anger of the Lord was kindled again them (vs.3) and God judged the idol worshipers harshly. Twenty-four thousand people died as a result of their sin.

Zealous for God made Peace with God

When Phinehas, a priest, took action against the idol worshipers, God turned away His wrath (v. 11) and promised peace to Phinehas and his descendants “because he was zealous for his God and made an atonement for the children of Israel.” (vs. 13)

A heart with unconfessed sin cannot find peace

Peace can never be found in a heart with unconfessed sin. Isaiah 48:22 states, “There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.” If we put anything before God — wealth, position, family, pleasure, hobbies — we are guilty of idolatry. If we lie, steal, gossip, or do anything to dishonor God we commit sin. We cannot find peace when we have unconfessed sin.

Finding True Peace

But, God is also full of mercy and grace and eager to forgive confessed sin. True peace is found not in the absence of conflict, but often in the midst of conflict. Ephesians 2:14 teaches, “For He (Christ Jesus) is our peace…” and we learn in Galatians 5:22 that peace is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Confession of and repentance from sin is the key to lasting peace.

We are just as guilty of Idolatry

Today, we are not much different than Israel. We may not worship Baal, but we are just as guilty of idolatry as Israel was. Our idols today might be our spouse, children, family, health, wealth, power, position, or jobs.  Just as Israel experienced peace when they had a right relationship with God, our world today will only find peace from the wars and sin that plague us when we zealously turn our hearts back to God in true repentance and acknowledge Him as Lord. God stands just as ready to forgive us today as He did Israel when they repented. Only then can we experience lasting peace.

Praying for Ukraine and Revival

God, today our hearts are burdened for the people in the Ukraine. We ask that you bring a swift and peaceful end to the conflict and war. We ask you to protect Ukraine’s president, their soldiers, and all the Ukrainians. Bless the soldier’s wives and children with peace and safety while their husbands and fathers are fighting in this war. We ask that you would redeem this situation by drawing both the Russians and the Ukrainian unto yourself. Show them that Jesus is the only true source of peace, safety, comfort, truth and freedom.

We pray that the Ukrainians ultimately would hope not in governments, elections or diplomacy, but in Jesus Christ. We ask that you would deliver Ukraine from evil and have mercy on this nation and heal their land. Give them your peace and the chance to develop as a nation that values truth, justice, and freedom, all rooted in your holy goodness. We pray for unity and love to supersede conflict. We pray for the world leaders involved in diplomacy over Ukraine and ask that you give them wisdom and knowledge. And we pray for the Ukrainian Christians that you would guide them as their faith is being tested. Restore peace to their land.

Lord, we bring our own country before you as we have strayed so far away for you. Send a revival to our country. God, harden not our hearts against you. Remove our hearts of stone and give us hearts of flesh. Place a new Spirit within us, and may we search for You with all our heart, mind, and soul. Draw us to repentance and forgive us where we have turned away from you. Help us, o Lord, to be zealous for you. Restore peace to our land.

Numbers 22-24

Mark 8:1-21

Sin is a Heart Problem

The background for these verses begin in verse 1 of Mark 7 where we find the disciples eating bread and the Pharisees notice they are eating with unwashed hands. In Jesus’ day there was an oral tradition that came out of the laws God gave the Israelites regarding clean and unclean. These traditions became the heart of rabbinic Judaism and in regards to hand washing, the Pharisees did more than just ritually wash their hands – they thoroughly purified themselves. So they asked Jesus, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” Jesus points out that washing hands, does not wash hearts. Sin is a heart problem caused by an unclean heart.

When Rituals make us Hypocrites we have a heart problem

Jesus knew that this wasn’t a question of curiosity. Nor were they solely accusing the disciples. They were in reality accusing Jesus of not following the law himself and acting as if he believes himself to be above the law. In response, Jesus quotes Isaiah 7:6-7  and straight out calls the Pharisees hypocrites right to their face. He tells them that the prophet Isaiah accurately prophesied about them when he said, “This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Their heart problem kept them caught up and bound up in the law – so much that they couldn’t recognize the Messiah was present among them.

So how does ritual hand washing make them hypocrites? Jesus gives the answer in verse 8: “For laying aside the commandment of God you hold the traditions of men.” In other words, the Pharisees twisted the commandment in order to side-step the law. Jesus was not rejecting the law. Instead he rebuked the Pharisees for not upholding it. The real issue here is not eating with unwashed hands, ritual purity, or oral traditions and who should or should not follow them. In quoting Isaiah, Jesus lets them know the real issue is a heart problem and their hearts are far from God. They were so caught up in keeping up with the traditions and rituals that there was no room for true worship.

What gets you into heaven?

So to the crowd that was around, Jesus wanted them to understand that it is not what you take into your body that qualifies you as unclean or impure. Instead, it’s what comes out of the heart that defile us. (Mark 7:15) Rituals and traditions don’t gain us entrance into heaven. Whether we sing the old hymns or contemporary music in church won’t get us into heaven. Whether there is a pulpit on the stage or not won’t get us into heaven. Nor does it matter if we sing the Doxology after the offering or not. You can memorize the books of the Bible and all the best known Bible verses – but it won’t get you into heaven.

You can memorize specific prayers and repeat them non-stop till you die, but it won’t get you into heaven. And you can pray to Mary, John the Baptist, St Paul, St Andrew, St. Matthew and all the other apostles – but they can’t get you into heaven either. You can live a highly moral life, but it won’t get you into heaven. You can’t buy your way in and no traditions or rituals will get you in. What gets us into heaven is a pure heart that has been forgiven through the faith we place in Christ as our Savior – nothing more – nothing less. The only cure to our sin infested heart problem is for our hearts to be washed in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb.

When we have a heart problem, it affects the whole person

Then as we come to verse 17, we find that the disciples didn’t get it and asked Him to explain what he had said. Jesus tells them that it is was is produced in the heart that affects the whole person. The heart is thought of the center of human will and rationality, as well as desire. It is the place from which all our intentions are birthed.

Jesus lists 13 moral heart problems to illustrate what He was teaching them. The first seven are all plural, indicating repeating acts. However, it only takes one sin to make us a sinner. Fornication includes all illicit sexual practices outside of marriage. Wickedness is used for anything malicious. The last six sins listed are all singular and are sinful attitudes. Lewdness refers to promiscuity. An evil eye means jealousy, envy, covetousness, and a grudging attitude. Blasphemy includes not just blasphemy against God, but slander of other people. Pride is exalting oneself above others. Foolishness is lack of moral judgment. We can find similar lists in Romans 1:29-31, Galatians 5:19-21, and 2 Timothy 3:2-5.

What pleases God?

When our heart problem is consumed with self-seeking desires, we become insatiable in pursing the things that please our self rather than pursing the things that please God. Ephesian 5:10 tells us that we need to discern the things that please God. So what pleases God?

  • Faith (Hebrews 11:6)
  • Offering ourselves as a living sacrifice to God, which is true worship (Romans 12:1)
  • Not being conformed to this world but renew our minds and discern God’s will (Romans 12:2)
  • Good deeds and growing in the knowledge of God (Galatians 1:10)
  • speaking as God wants us to (1 Thessalonians 2:4)
  • doing the will of God (1 John 2:17)
  • loving others (1 Thessalonians 4:9)
  • Sharing with others (Hebrews 13:16)
  • humble and contrite heart (Isaiah 57:15)
  • the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:14)
  • Working heartily, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23)
  • Obeying God rather than men (Acts 5:29)
  • fearing (awe, respect of) Him and placing our hope in his steadfast love (Psalm 147:10-11)
  • Walking as children of Light (Ephesians 5:8-10)
  • doing everything to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Just as the list of 13 sins come from within, so does what pleases God. It all comes down to the condition of our heart. Do we have a heart black with sin or a heart that has been cleansed by Christ and living for Him?

Numbers 19-21

Mark 7

Lip Service without Heart Service

I love the praise and worship songs Pastor Jonathan leads us in every Sunday. The lyrics praise and magnify Jesus. Yet, if in my heart I’m angry, have unresolved conflict with another person, or have unconfessed sin that I hang on to, then I can sing the great praise words all day and still have a heart far from God. Or we could sing along, but not have yet accepted Christ as Savior, like the religious leaders in Jesus’ day. They practiced all the rituals, memorized the scripture, and led pious lives but denied Jesus as the Messiah even though He stood right in front of them. Jesus called them hypocrites. Hypocrites just offer God lip service without any heart service.

Anytime worship is merely outward and not from the heart then it is nothing more than hypocritical worship – it is lip service. True purity in worship is a matter of inward love and a right attitude, not just outward actions and religious rituals or traditions. You can do all the right “things” and still not do them for the right reasons. True worship is always accompanied by a lifestyle of a heart committed to God.

When our heart is right, our lips will follow

If our heart is right than our words will follow and they will honor God. What words are said in rush hour traffic with the “road bully” that cuts you off? What words are said in an argument with your spouse. Or what words do you use when you talk about your spouse to others? Do you participate in the office gossip? Do you use cuss words? What do your words say about you? Are you offering God true worship from the heart – or just paying some lip-service?

When we make God Lord of our life, then we make Him Lord over all parts of us – whether that’s our lips and the words we say, our eyes and what we choose to view on the internet or TV, our ears in what we listen to, our feet in where we go, our minds and the thoughts we dwell on, or our hands in the actions they do.

You can’t have God be Lord of your life in the great praise and worship time on Sunday mornings and not be Lord the rest of the week. Otherwise, we are just like the hypocritical religious leaders of Jesus’ day.

twitter bird

Lord, may our lips honor you from a heart of true worship. May they sing your praise and tell of your great love and grace with hearts that honor you. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

Lip Service without Heart Service

Anytime worship is merely outward and not from the heart, then it is nothing more than hypocritical worship – it is lip service.

Are you offering God true worship from the heart – or just paying some lip service?

When we make God Lord of our life, then we make Him Lord over all parts of us – whether that’s our lips and the words we say, our eyes and what we choose to view on the internet or TV, our ears in what we listen to, our feet in where we go, our minds and the thoughts we dwell on, or our hands in the actions they do.

You can’t have God be Lord of your life in the great praise and worship time on Sunday mornings and not be Lord the rest of the week. Otherwise, we are just like the hypocritical religious leaders of Jesus’ day and guilty of lip service.
