Leviticus 20-21

Matthew 28

Who’s Your One?

Each One, Reach One

Babbie Mason, a Christian music artist, has a song entitled, “Each One, Reach One.” (You can listen to the song by clicking the title.) The song challenges every Christian to reach one lost person for Christ with the idea that if we each reach one, we can win the world for Jesus. So, who’s your one? The chorus lyrics are:

But each one can reach one
As we follow after Christ we all can lead one
We can lead one to the Savior
And together we can tell the world that Jesus is the way
If we each one reach one

NAMB’s Who’s Your One

A 2020 initiative started by the North American Mission Board is called “Who’s Your One.” It’s the same principle of Babbie Mason’s song. Everyone can reach just one and tell them about Jesus. It sounds rather simple, doesn’t it? Just reach one. But if you think about it, if every person reaches just one and tells them about Jesus – we could reach the entire world!

Jesus doesn’t call all of us to missionaries in forgiven countries, but He does call all of us to missionaries. For some, that might mean right in your own home, winning your spouse or children or family members to Christ. For others, it might mean being a missionary at the workplace, winning a co-worker to Christ. Someone else might be called to volunteer at a homeless shelter, abuse shelter, or abortion clinic and share the love of Jesus with those who are hurting. Someone else might be called to be chaplains at a hospital or military base. For some, it might be answering the call to be a foster parent and leading their foster children and their biological families to Christ. Some are called to be pastors and proclaim Jesus from a pulpit or for others, it might mean saying yes to leading a Small Group.

Start with Just One

Wherever God has planted you – that’s where He wants you to be a missionary. Start with just one. Ask God to show you the person He wants you to lead to Him. As He lays that person on your heart, begin praying for them that God would prepare the heart to receive the Good News of Jesus and ask Him to show you the right moment of a open door to begin a conversation with the person.

At whosyourone.com, you can enter that person’s name and people all over the world can join you in praying for your one. You can also comment below with the first name of the one you are praying for and our team will join you in praying for your one. When they do accept Christ, come back and let us know so we can rejoice with you and give God the glory. But don’t stop with just one… move on to your next “one”.

Don’t give up on your One

If your one doesn’t accept Christ as their Savior when you share the gospel, continue to pray for them that seed you planted will sprout and grow. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Pray for another opportunity to talk to them again or for the next person to be able to sow the seed you planted. Paul taught this in 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 where he wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”

The only thing God has told us to do is go and tell someone. Bringing them to salvation is God’s work. Without Him at work, any effort we make would be doomed to failure. As Christians, the heart of our mission, while we are on earth, is reproducing more Christians and reproducing that which Christ has produced in us: faith, love, obedience, growth, compassion, grace, mercy, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, forgiveness,.

Who’s Your One?

Start with just one. Reach one person for Christ. However, the excitement of leading one – will cause you to want to reach another – and another. 2 Corinthians 9:6 says, “Remember this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously.” But you can start with just one. Will you commit to telling just one person what Jesus has done in your life for you? Who’s your one?

Be Holy, for I am Holy

One Year Bible Reading Plan and Devotional

Today’s Bible Reading: February 14

One Year Bible Reading Plan

Leviticus 18-19

Matthew 27:32-66

Be Holy, for I Am Holy

Holy is God’s Nature

The word “holy” means “exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.” To be holy refers to a state of being set apart from defilement. The Hebrew word translated “holy” comes from a term meaning “separate.” Thus, what is holy is separated from common use, or held sacred, especially by virtue of its being clean and pure.

God is holy to the supreme degree. The Bible says: “There is no one holy like Jehovah.” (1 Samuel 2:2) Holiness is the foundation of all other aspects of God’s character. Holy is who God is! Revelation 15:4 says of God, “You alone are holy.” The four living creatures sing to God day and night, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).

Not only is God holy, but we are to be holy, too. He expects us to be “set apart” from the world. We are to be different from the world. And here in the book of Leviticus, we find for the third time, God telling his people to “Be holy, because I am holy.” The other two times are in Leviticus 11:44 and 45. God knows us, humans, pretty well – after all, He created us. He knows we have to hear things multiple times for it to sink in and finally “get it.” So let’s look at one aspect of being holy – reflecting the nature and characteristics of God.

My Mini-Me

When people look at my daughter, they know she is mine. She is made in my image. She’s my mini-me. When you look at her, she reflects me. You can see she gets some attributes from her dad, but mostly, she’s a younger version of me. We have a picture of us side by side at the same age and the only way you can tell us apart is by the fashion differences from when I was that age. Our hair was even combed the same way. We do have some differences – she is shorter than me, but we look very much alike.

Created In God’s Image but Sin Damages Our Image

When God created us, He created us in His image and likeness. Therefore, we should reflect every aspect of who He is, including His holiness, because His image is stamped and engraved in us. However, when sin entered the world, our relationship with God became broken and the image we reflect is far from holy.

Jesus said in John 8:44, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires.” If Satan is our father, then we reflect him, rather than God. Additionally, by giving in to sin and obeying the Devil, we become his slave. Paul tells us in Romans 6:16, “don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness”

The simple truth is we either reflect the image of God or the image of Satan. We cannot reflect both. Luke 16:13 tells us that no one can serve two masters. Neither can someone have two fathers. Either God is our father and we reflect His image, or Satan is our Father and we reflect his.

Because God is holy, He hates sin

God hates sin because it is the very opposite of His holiness. In Psalm 5:4, we find: “For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; no evil dwells with You.” The Bible tells us how God feels about sin using words such as hostility, disgust, and utter dislike. For example, sin is described as putrefying sores in Isaiah 1:6. Psalm 38:4 tells us sin is a heavy burden. From Titus 1:15 and 2 Corinthians 7:1, sin is described as defiling filth, From Matthew 6:12-15, sin is a binding debt. 1 John 1:6 describes sin as darkness. And the prophet Isaiah describes sin as a scarlet stain in Isaiah 1:18.

God hates sin for the simple reason that sin separates us from Him: “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2). It was sin that caused Adam and Eve to run away from God and hide “among the trees of the garden” (Genesis 3:8). Sin always brings separation, and the fact that God hates sin means that He hates being separated from us.

God hates sin because it entices us to focus on worldly pleasure rather than God’s blessings. He hates sin because it blinds us to the truth (Matthew 5:14). He hates sin because it it enslaves us and will eventually destroy us – not only in this life, but for eternity (Romans 6:16). God hates sin because it lessens our love for Him (1 John 2:15-16). He hates sin because it makes us his enemy (James 4:4).

God Expects us to Reflect Him and be Holy

As believers, we should hate sin as does God. 1 Thessalonians 5:5 says we are “sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” We must recognize that God has set us apart; we are “a holy nation, a people belonging to God” (1 Peter 2:9). Therefore, as His children, the world should see Him in us because His Holy Spirit dwells within us.

Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” (John 8:12) But then in Matthew 5:14, Jesus also says, “You are the light of the world.” We can only be the light of the world when the Light (Jesus) is in our hearts. In a world that is dark with sin, the Light of Jesus should shine through us so that the world can see Him in us. As His children, we should look like Him. We should reflect the holiness of God. How else will the world come to know Him? The world should be able to look at us and then say, “Yup! She’s part of the family of God!”

As God’s Image-barers, we should be Holy

In Leviticus 19:2 God instructs Moses to tell the Children of Israel to be holy because God is holy. That applies to us today as well. Our words should be holy. Our actions should be holy. And our thoughts should be holy. The way we live should be holy. We should be reflecting God in everything we think, say, or do.  Because God is merciful, forgiving, grace, truthful, keeps his promises, righteous, just, and faithful, so should we. Because He is unconditional and unfailing in how He loves us, so we should be in how we love others. As beings created in His image, we should reflect these attributes in our everyday lives.

Colossians 3:10 says, “And having put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” And in Ephesians 4:24, Paul wrote, “And to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

In Proverbs 27:19, Solomon wrote, “As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the person.” Whatever is in our heart is what is reflected in our lives. Is your heart reflecting the glory of God and His attributes and characteristics? Does a lost world see Jesus in you?

Leviticus 15-17

Matthew 27:1-31

What will you do with Jesus?

NOT GUILTY!

Each one of us must, at some time in our lives, answer the question: “What will I do with Jesus?” When the Jewish religious leaders brought Jesus before Pilate, demanding that Jesus be executed, Pilate found no fault in Him. Not one sin. Not one wrong doing. And not one law broken. The Bible is clear that Jesus was guilty of nothing. This is the same man who compassionately healed the sick, made blind people see, raised people from the dead, fed more than 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 small fish. He had done nothing but good. Yet, the people now yelled for his death.

In the moment that Jesus stood before Pilate, Jesus’ earthly life was in Pilate’s hands. Not that Pilate could “take” Jesus’ life. Jesus willingly laid down his life for us. But Pilate could not find one thing Jesus was guilty of and he tried to weasel his way out of the situation through an annual custom where he would release a prisoner. He asked the crowd if they wanted him to release Jesus who was innocent of any wrong or Barabbas, a hardened criminal. The same crowd who just days before were laying palm branches and crying, “HOSANNA!” now cried out for the release of Barabbas – a murderer. Pilate then asked, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?

The people’s response: “CRUCIFY HIM!”

You too must choose

Every single one of us must answer this all important question. The answer we choose will determine our eternity. We can reject Him and live our own way or we can choose to surrender our lives to Him as our Savior. The time to answer the question for yourself is now. It’s a decision that must be made in this life. You can’t wait until after you die and then decide. None of know how long we have on this earth. Tomorrow could be too late. You are not even guaranteed the next breath. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, “Look, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation.” If you haven’t answered question, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” for yourself yet, then let me ask you…what are you waiting for? What will you do with Jesus, who is called Christ?

What will you do with Jesus in this moment?

For those of us who have chosen salvation, we too much answer the same question every day. As temptations come our way or when we feel God tugging at our heart to do something He’s calling us to do, we must answer the question – What will I do with Jesus right now in this moment? Will you seek Him to help overcome the temptation? Will you obey Him and answer the call?

Pilate, who was governor, should have done the right thing at the beginning and released Jesus, but it was God’s plan for Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins. Pilate, nor the people, were never in control of Jesus’ life or death. The crowd had to decide what to do with Jesus – they chose crucifixion. Pilate had to decide what to do with Jesus. He listened to and gave in to the crowd who just kept getting louder and louder to the point that Pilate was afraid of a riot starting. At that point it was too late for him to do the right thing. He chose to appease the crowd and handed Jesus over to be crucified.

The people intended evil – but God used it for our good

The crowd intended a very big evil against Jesus who was without any sin or wrong, but what they intended for evil, God used for the good of all people everywhere for without the cross and death of Jesus, there could be no resurrection and salvation. We would have no hope of redemption and fellowship with God. There would be no eternal life in heaven. We’d all be doomed to eternity in hell.

Pilate may have thought he was appeasing an angry crowd, but in reality he was setting into motion the final steps of God’s plan of salvation for you and for me. A plan that started in the Garden of Eden with the very first sin and traced through the pages of the Bible until this very moment. God sent Jesus to cross – but Jesus willingly went to the cross. Man nailed him to a cross, but the King of glory allowed them too. Why? Because, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish by have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

So let me ask you today – What will you do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?

One Year Bible Reading Plan

Leviticus 14

Matthew 26:55-75

The AWOL Disciples

On the night that Jesus was arrested He began hours of untold and unjust torture. The twelve men he chose from all others and made his disciples — where were they? These men, His closest earthly companions became scared and fled – they went AWOL. Absent without Leave. There “fight or flight” self-preservation kicked in and they chose “flight.” In His greatest hour of need, they deserted – leaving Him to go through a trail of made up, false allegations, a flogging that should have killed Him, nailed to a cross and to die – alone.

The AWOL Children of God

How often do we do the same when life gets tough. Maybe we blame God for what’s happened or we wonder why He isn’t doing something about the trouble we are facing. Maybe its being bitter over the death of a loved one. Whatever it might look like, we desert Him – just as the disciples did. We give up and stop praying for that miracle. We close our Bibles and put them on a shelf to collect dust. Maybe we drop out of church. What it really comes down to is we become AWOL children of God.

Jesus stayed true to His mission

While we might give up on God, and even though the disciples fled and hid in fear, Jesus stayed true to His mission. He surrendered to the Father’s plan that would bring about our redemption and salvation. Out of His love for them and us, He endured the cross and died in our place – taking the punishment we deserve on Himself so that we could find forgiveness of sin and have a relationship with God. I sometimes wonder if in those hours of agonizing torture if the face of every human created past, present and future, played across the mind of Jesus and as He saw each face, He would say, “I’m doing this for you, Julie. I love you this much.” Go back read that again, but put your name there.

In John 15:13, Jesus said that there is no greater love than a man lay down his life for his friend. He lived out those words as he hung on a cross with you and me on His mind.

God never goes AWOL on us

No matter how many times we might turn our backs on God, God will never turn His back on us. He’s always there – ready to love us, ready to forgive, ready to bring us back into a right relationship with Him. With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, be sure that you take time to acknowledge Jesus’ love for us – an unfailing love that has no ends, an unconditional love that accepts us just as we are. If you are in a season of life where you have turned your back on God, take a few moments to remember the sacrificial love of Jesus as He hung on the cross for you. Then call on His name. He is ready with open arms to have you back again.
