How Important is Prayer?

How important is prayer?

If you want to know how important prayer is, ask the following people:

  • A student sitting down to take a final exam that needs a passing grade.
  • The wife who’s husband is battling cancer.
  • A parent who’s child is making bad decisions.
  • The child who’s parent is strung out on drugs.
  • An employee who’s company was just bought out.
  • The couple who is struggling to pay the bills.
  • The husband who’s wife in cheating.
  • A Christian who’s trying to figure out God’s will.
  • The Son of God who prayed to His Father while he walked the earth.

Prayer should not be our last resort

Too often we treat prayer as our “last resort” when we are in trouble and have no way out. How would our lives be different if, instead, prayer was our constant, every-day routine that we started with every morning? In the book, The God Who Hearsby W. Bingham Hunter, he writes:

In contrast to Jesus, most of us are too busy coping with existence to see prayer as vital or essential.  But life could be more simple.  An older car, a less trendy wardrobe, reupholstered rather than replaced furniture, a little less meat on the table—changes like this could reduce the need for so much income and perhaps provide more time for prayer.  Part of the reason Jesus had time and energy to pray the way he did was the simplicity of his life.

He owned next to nothing and invested his life in people, ideas, conversations and relationships.  He viewed success quite differently than we usually do.  And he viewed whatever he did as God’s work.  These are thoughts worth pondering . . . even if they are also threatening.  Who are you really in love with?  Is it God?  Your spouse? Your children? Friends?  Success?  Your image?  Where is your treasure?  There is you heart also.  Prayer is basically a matter of priorities, isn’t it?  (The God Who Hears, pp. 189-90)

The Role of Prayer in Jesus’ life and ministry

Prayer played a crucial role in Jesus; life and ministry. He was constantly in tune with His Father.  In fact, He thought prayer so important that he taught and insisted that His disciples follow His example. If Jesus, the Son of God, thought prayer was important – if He found the need to pray – how much more important should it be for us? Jesus was a man of prayer – and we should be a people of prayer. From His example, we can learn three important aspects of prayer to help us develop a stronger, more intimate prayer life with our Heavenly Father.

Begin the day with prayer

Time with the Father

In Mark 1:35, we learn that Jesus got up early – long before sunrise. He wasn’t praying a quick prayer as he donned his robe and headed out for the day to do His work. He wan’t praying as He quickly walked down the highway on the way to the place He would work on that day. Nor was He uttering some memorized prayer that involved very little heart-felt words. Instead, He got up early – long before sunrise because He wanted to spend time with His Father.

Relationship with the Father

Prayer is about a relationship. The Son of God left the glory of heaven to come to a world we broke with our sin and rebelliousness. He came with a very difficult task and mission – to pay the penalty for our sin. At this point in Jesus’ life, he was approximately 30 years old and he had just begun his public ministry the day before. Prior to this, He could have slipped away to a quiet spot to prayer rather easily, but in his first day of ministry we find that he called four fishermen to follow Him, cast out demons, healed Peter’s mother-in-law, and healed many other people. In fact, in Mark 1:33 it says, “And the whole city was gathered together at the door. Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.”

Work like that doesn’t stay quiet for long. So while the city slept, Jesus prayed. He longed to have some time with His Father.

Think about someone who you are very close to – a sister, friend, parent, grandparent. Now think about a time when life was busy and you long to have some time to spend with this person. Have you ever longed to spend time with your Heavenly Father like that?

Why pray in the morning?

Are prayers more likely to be answered when we get up early to pray? No. There is nothing in the Bible that points to morning being the only time that acceptable to pray. You are no better of  Christian because you got up before the sun to pray. In the Bible we find that Daniel prayed three times a day, the book of Psalms is full of prayer offered at night. In Acts 27, Paul prayed before a meal. And in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we are told to “pray without ceasing.” Yet, there is value to starting your day with prayer and gives us a proper perspective on the day. Here are some of the benefits to starting your day with prayer:

  • Begin each day with a clean slate as we confess our sins and receive forgiveness
  • Brings our focus in alignment with God’s.
  • Sets our attention on God.
  • Puts our priorities in the right order
  • Provides guidance for God’s plan and will for our lives
  • Gives us strength to handle what the day brings
  • Places our dependence on God rather than on yourself.

Pray without distraction

Recently, as I was driving home from the office, it was the time of day that the sun was in the best possible position to be right in my eyes as I’m driving down the interstate. For a few seconds, all I could see was sun. I felt like I was driving blind. Instantly, my thought was, “God, I can’t see anything – but you can see everything so steer this car or please move the sun.” About that time, some trees along the side of the road came between me and the sun and I could see the road again. I don’t think I’d ever been so thankful for trees before. Prayers like that, I call “may-day” prayers. Short, one-sentenced prayers uttered in a moment of panic, need, or desperation. But if our prayer life is nothing but may-day prayers, we don’t develop a relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Think for a moment about your relationship with your spouse or a close friend. If you are trying to tell them something very important but they are glued to their phone on social media, what happens to your relationship with that person? If this is a pattern that occurs often, you begin to feel like you don’t matter to that person or that what you have to say is important enough for them to put the phone down and listen. God has something very important to say to you – every day. But once the day gets going, it is full of distractions and it’s very difficult to talk to a distracted person.

Pray in a solitary place

As Jesus got up early to pray, he went to a solitary place. A place without distractions. So, He got up before anyone else, quietly got dressed, tip-toed through the house, carefully opened the door and quietly closing it behind him then hurried through the quiet streets of Capernaum to a hill outside of town – and there He met His heavenly Father.

Have you ever noticed that when you finally find time to pray that it’s right then the kids need some TP in the back bathroom or the phone rings or the news interrupts with a breaking headline story or the dryer lets you know the clothes are done, or the kids are arguing over a toy, and your spouse picks that moment to tell you his mother is coming for a week-long visit. Satan will use the distractions of everyday life to keep us from praying.

We must be intentional in setting aside a time every day to spend time with our Father. Getting up before the rest of the house, while everything is still quiet and there are no demands on your time and attention is a great way to be able to pray without distractions. Where is your place of solitude? What is your time without distractions? Be intentional in setting aside that time every day to meet God in your place of solitude.

Can’t I pray anywhere?

Yes – and please do. However, when we meet with God in a place of solitude, we are able to engage with our heavenly Father in a much deeper and intense way then when we pray on the subway or while driving on the interstate or at the office. Our prayer should include our adoration of our Father, confession of our sins, offering thanks for God’s provision and answered prayers, and our requests that we ask of Him. Each of these can be emotional. We can feel awe, reverence, praise, humility, sorrow, desperation, confusion, and more.

In Hebrews 5:7, we find Paul wrote, “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.” Prayer is about doing spiritual business with God and you can’t do that at the level you need to with distractions all around you. It requires retreating to a solitude place where there is only you and God.

Prayer is our source for strength

Prayer is how we stay the course with life gets crazy. Jesus’ popularity grew overnight. As Peter awoke and found Jesus gone, he began to search for him. (verse 36) When he finds Jesus, he says, “Everyone is looking for you!” Peter wasn’t just looking for Jesus – he was “in hot pursuit.” If we were to put it in our words today, it might go something like:

“Hey Jesus! There you are! What in the world are you doing out here all alone? Everyone is awake and looking for you. You need to come do some of that healing stuff and casting out demons. They are all waiting for you. After your performance last night, we are off to a great start. But the crowd is going to move on to something else if you don’t hurry back.”

Jesus knew that fame didn’t equal success. In fact, at times, fame can be a stumbling block. If we are not careful, we can allow our egos to take over and our motivation for ministry and serving God becomes about dollars, notoriety, the next book deal, the next speaking gig. If we aren’t careful we will cease pointing people to Christ and instead point them to where they can purchase our book or fill out the online form for us to come speak at their church. And if we aren’t careful the song we sing in church ceases to be heartfelt worship and instead becomes about the praise people give us at the end of the service.

Prayer helps keep our focus on God

Perhaps, this is why Jesus got up early and escaped to a solitary place to pray. While the Bible doesn’t record the words he prayed, we do know that Jesus was tempted in every way we are and fame and fortune is definitely a temptation. So perhaps his prayer was to remain focused on the task he came to accomplish. It could have been very easy for Jesus to ride the wave of popularity rather than walking the path of suffering and death.

Prayer helps guide our decisions and choices

Life is hard and everyday we are presented with choices. How will I obey Him? How will I honor Him with my words in this situation? Will I choose to serve rather than be served? How will I keep my focus on what God is calling me to do? The only way to get the answers to such questions is on our knees in prayer. And Satan will do anything He can to keep us distracted without enough time in the day to pray. He will also fill your mind with the lie that says, “I’m too busy to pray.” If you are, then your priorities are out of whack.

But within the 24 hours of the day we always manage to find the time to do the things that we really want to do. It’s like a child who doesn’t want to eat their vegetables. The child says, “I’m full.” So you say, “Do you want some ice cream?” The child replies, “Yes!” And you say, “Then I guess you’re not too full to eat your vegetables.” Prayer is the same way. If you really want to spend time with your heavenly Father, then you’ll make the time. Our actions will reveal just how important we believe prayer to be. If prayer for you works like the “Bat-phone” that you pick up in a crisis, then you’re missing out on a relationship with your Father. If prayer for you works like a bottle you rub, then God is just a magical genie to you.

But what if you got up early – long before the sunrise – and got away to a solitude, distraction-free zone and spent time with your heavenly Father?

Skip the Grudge – Love Your Neighbor

Who do you call “Neighbor”?

Who are the people that you call “neighbor”? The people that live next door, across the street, down the street, or within your housing development, apartment building or condo? What about the people at work or in your school? What about the people that live right inside of your home…your spouse, parents, brothers, sisters? Basically, anyone you come in contact with as you live your life is your neighbor and God expects us to all get along. We are not to take revenge or bear a grudge. In fact, He expects us to love others as much as we love ourselves.

Revenge and Grudges

There is nothing right or okay about taking revenge or holding on to a grudge. What is the difference between these? Revenge is any form of personal retaliatory action against an individual, institution, or group for some perceived harm or injustice while a grudge is deep-seated animosity or ill-feeling about something or someone. Both are products of hate.

A closer look at revenge

We feel the need to get revenge when we feel like we have been slighted, at a disadvantage, disempowered, treated poorly, threatened, or placed in an unfair situation due to someone or something. The most common emotions that accompany this type of situation can be feelings of anger, resentment, frustration, and deep hurt. We often don’t feel like we have a way out to express ourselves unless we get back at whatever or whoever caused this turmoil. What’s more, there are negative physical and medical risks posed with holding onto an angry grudge. They include heart disease, high blood pressure, headaches, digestive imbalances, insomnia, anxiety and depression, skin problems including eczema, and stroke.

A closer look at grudges

Grudges are not any better. When we hang on to the things others do or say to us, we are holding a grudge. While we don’t often like to admit it, holding a grudge is a common way some people respond to feeling that they’ve been wronged. However, just like revenge, holding a grudge can end up hurting you as much as the person who inspired it.

Clinging to hate and anger can impact you, emotionally, physically, and socially. You might think that harboring ill-will harms the person you’re mad at, but ultimately you’re the one who suffers from it. Essentially, a grudge inhibits your ability to cope with or resolve your issue and keeps you stuck in the past—trapped in an unpleasant event or interaction that causes you distress. The grudge doesn’t solve your problem and is highly unlikely to make you feel any better. Consider that the phrase “holding a grudge,” comes from the Old French word grouchier, which means “to grumble” and is related to the English word “grouch.” Related older English and German words have similar meanings that translate into “to complain,” “to wail,” “to grumble,” and “to cry out.”

No wonder God says, “Do not revenge or bear a grudge!”

Forgiveness removes the need for revenge and grudges

Letting go of revenge and grudges can make way for improved health and peace of mind. Forgiveness involves a decision to let go of resentment and thoughts of revenge. It doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the harm done to you or making up with the person who caused the harm, although it does open the door for the opportunity to mend broken relationships. Forgiveness brings a kind of peace that helps you go on with life. If revenge and grudges affect us negatively, then forgiveness affects us positively. Forgiveness can lead to

  • healthier relationships
  • Improved mental health
  • Less anxiety, stress and hostility
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Fewer symptoms of depression
  • A stronger immune system
  • Improved heart health
  • Improved self-esteem

Jesus said in Matthew 6:15, “But if you don’t forgive people, your Father will not forgive your wrongdoing.” There is no place in the Christian’s life for either revenge or bearing grudges. No where in the life of Christ will you find him taking revenge or holding a grudge. Not when Judas betrayed him, not when the 12 disciples left him, not when Peter denied him, and not when the Roman soldier nailed him to a cross. Instead, from the cross, He asks His Father to “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

God wants us to forgive….just as He forgave us. Paul told us in Romans 12:19, Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” When you hold on to a grudge or seek revenge, you are typically the person that is most miserable while the one you are angry with goes on with their life. But when you release it and let it go into the hands of the Almighty God and choose forgiveness instead, you demonstrate the nature and character of Christ.

Bless those who persecute you

Proverbs 25:21-22 says, “If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink, for you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” It really comes down to one word: “LOVE.” We are to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are to even love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us. Paul wrote in Romans 12:14, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.” If you want to defeat the urge to take revenge or hold a grudge, bless the person who did you wrong. Stop and pray for that person and ask God to bless them. You’ll feel much better than hanging on to anger and holding grudges and seeking revenge.

Try to find at least five things that you can do for other people today that show you love them as much as you love yourself. Can you do one thing for each of the following people: someone in your home, someone on your street, someone at work, a friend, a total stranger or homeless person. As you do, say a prayer of blessing for each of these people.

Love your Neighbor

Loving your neighbor as yourself is found eight times in the Bible. Not once. Not twice. Eight times. Loving your neighbor as yourself is so important to God that He not only repeats Himself, He makes it a command. And not just one in a list of many commands. Jesus coupled the command to love your neighbor as yourself with loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

But when someone wrongs us, it becomes very difficult to love them. We must remember that there was a time when we, too, were difficult to love – but Jesus died for us anyway. Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” Jesus had compassion, grace, and mercy on us. And this is why he came to earth. In Luke 5:32, Jesus says, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Then we must remember that Jesus loves those who wrong us just as much as He loves us – and he came to die for them too. Because He lives within us, the same compassion, grace and mercy he had on us, we should extend to others.

Love in Words

James writes, “You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19) And in verse 1:26, he says “If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.” If you and I launch verbal destruction, those words will have devastating consequences on others.

The childhood rhyme about stick and stones versus words is not true. Words build up or tear down. There is an old saying that says,  “Never say in anger what you don’t mean, because you can say you’re sorry, but you can’t take it back.” Satan can use our tongue to cause division, putting others down, bragging, false teaching, exaggeration, complaining, or just flat out lying. The tongue can express or repress; offend or befriend; affirm or alienate; build or belittle; comfort or criticize; delight or destroy. It only takes a few words to hurt someone and the easiest way to get revenge is through words.

Our words have power. They can bring joy or cause misery. Proverbs 18:21 puts it this way: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” The stakes are high. Your words can either speak life, or your words can speak death. Our tongues can build others up, or they can tear them down. They can result in blessings or revenge and grudges.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up as you are already doing.”

To love your neighbor as yourself is to use words to build them up. Speaking words of encouragement is the most obvious example but there are others. We can be more intentional with our words by looking for and magnifying the good. We can always find something good if we’ll take the time to look for it. If you are having a hard time finding good in someone who has wronged you, ask the Holy Spirit to show you the good in them.

Love in Action

It is one thing to say we love our neighbor, but putting love into action is another – especially when we feel we have been wronged in some way. To put love in action, means we serve. Serving from the heart is kindness in action. Kindness is one of the attributes of love listed in 1 Corinthians 13. The funny thing about kindness, though, is you can do acts of kindness without kindness residing in your heart. If the kind thing is done out of duty then it isn’t love. But if you have to start from a sense of duty, then start there and while you serve them, ask God to change duty into genuine, Christ-like love.

Jesus said he came to serve (Matthew 20:28). God, who is love, came to serve. Love serves. For you to love your neighbor as yourself, you’ll have a heart to serve them. You can do so in simple ways. Let them know you’re there for them. If they need a ride somewhere, you drive them. If they need their dog or cat checked on while they’re out of town, you do that for them. Other examples are getting their mail for them or taking them a meal if they’re not well.

What does the Bible say?

Romans 12:17 says, “Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. And in 1 Thessalonians 5: 15, Paul tell us, “See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.” And in Ephesians 4:31-32, we are told to “let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” James tells us that mercy triumphs judgement (James 2:13). King Solomon instructs us in Proverbs 19:11 that “Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.”

We could list many other verses, but one thing is clear. God does not want us to live in hate and anger, bearing grudges or seeking revenge. He wants us, with the power of His help, to love those who do us wrong – both in word and action.

Who’s Your One?

Each One, Reach One

Babbie Mason, a Christian music artist, has a song entitled, “Each One, Reach One.” (You can listen to the song by clicking the title.) The song challenges every Christian to reach one lost person for Christ with the idea that if we each reach one, we can win the world for Jesus. So, who’s your one? The chorus lyrics are:

But each one can reach one
As we follow after Christ we all can lead one
We can lead one to the Savior
And together we can tell the world that Jesus is the way
If we each one reach one

NAMB’s Who’s Your One

A 2020 initiative started by the North American Mission Board is called “Who’s Your One.” It’s the same principle of Babbie Mason’s song. Everyone can reach just one and tell them about Jesus. It sounds rather simple, doesn’t it? Just reach one. But if you think about it, if every person reaches just one and tells them about Jesus – we could reach the entire world!

Jesus doesn’t call all of us to missionaries in forgiven countries, but He does call all of us to missionaries. For some, that might mean right in your own home, winning your spouse or children or family members to Christ. For others, it might mean being a missionary at the workplace, winning a co-worker to Christ. Someone else might be called to volunteer at a homeless shelter, abuse shelter, or abortion clinic and share the love of Jesus with those who are hurting. Someone else might be called to be chaplains at a hospital or military base. For some, it might be answering the call to be a foster parent and leading their foster children and their biological families to Christ. Some are called to be pastors and proclaim Jesus from a pulpit or for others, it might mean saying yes to leading a Small Group.

Start with Just One

Wherever God has planted you – that’s where He wants you to be a missionary. Start with just one. Ask God to show you the person He wants you to lead to Him. As He lays that person on your heart, begin praying for them that God would prepare the heart to receive the Good News of Jesus and ask Him to show you the right moment of a open door to begin a conversation with the person.

At whosyourone.com, you can enter that person’s name and people all over the world can join you in praying for your one. You can also comment below with the first name of the one you are praying for and our team will join you in praying for your one. When they do accept Christ, come back and let us know so we can rejoice with you and give God the glory. But don’t stop with just one… move on to your next “one”.

Don’t give up on your One

If your one doesn’t accept Christ as their Savior when you share the gospel, continue to pray for them that seed you planted will sprout and grow. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Pray for another opportunity to talk to them again or for the next person to be able to sow the seed you planted. Paul taught this in 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 where he wrote, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”

The only thing God has told us to do is go and tell someone. Bringing them to salvation is God’s work. Without Him at work, any effort we make would be doomed to failure. As Christians, the heart of our mission, while we are on earth, is reproducing more Christians and reproducing that which Christ has produced in us: faith, love, obedience, growth, compassion, grace, mercy, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, forgiveness,.

Who’s Your One?

Start with just one. Reach one person for Christ. However, the excitement of leading one – will cause you to want to reach another – and another. 2 Corinthians 9:6 says, “Remember this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously.” But you can start with just one. Will you commit to telling just one person what Jesus has done in your life for you? Who’s your one?
