Let your Light Shine
A popular children’s song called, “This Little Light of Mine” says: This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. The next verses says, “Hide it under a bushel? No! I’m gonna let it shine.” Followed by “Don’t let Satan blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine,” The light that is referred to in this song and in the Mark 4:21 is the light of Jesus.
The Light of the World
In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” What is the basic function of light? To dispel darkness. It is impossible for darkness to remain when a light is turned on. Regardless of how thick the darkness may be. In the Bible, darkness refers to the world that is enslaved to sin. But Jesus shines through the darkness so that we can find our way to Him.
Light Dispels Darkness
How can darkness be dispelled? First, by not hiding the light. Matthew 5:14 tell us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” And second, by not limiting the light. Matthew 5:15, says, “Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Just as a nightlight gives light in a dark room, so Christians should be a light in a world dark with sin.
Pastor Chuck Swindoll describes it this way: “Those in the light are a weird phenomenon to those in darkness. And that is exactly as Jesus planned it. Think of some distinctive characteristics of light: Light is silent. No noise, no big splash, no banners—light simply shines. It’s like a single lighthouse along a dark, rugged shoreline. All it does is shine. Light gives direction. No words, no sermon. Jesus says that others “see” a Christian’s actions; He says nothing about nonbelievers “hearing” what a believer says. Light attracts attention. You don’t have to ask people to look at you when you turn on a light in a dark room. It happens automatically.
Let Your Light Shine
With Jesus living within us, the Light of the World should shine through us. Jesus expects us to let our lights shine. In other words, the dark, lost world should see the light of Jesus shining so that it draws them to Him. We don’t pay the electric bill and then sit in the darkness anymore than those in Jesus day would have bought a candle only to place it under a basket where it is not able to illuminate the dark. Jesus didn’t purchase us with the cost of His life so that we could leave our lights hidden and bring them out only when we are safely surrounded by other Christians.
Lights are meant to be seen. They are meant to guide our way when it is dark. And the light of Christ is meant to shine through us so that those looking for Him are able to find Him. How can you let your light shine today?
