Names of God: Elohim Machase Lanu

Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. Finally, because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, and respect God and to not use His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean. Today, we look at the name El-Kanna

Today’s Name: Elohim Machase Lanu

An encounter with Elohim Machase Lanu:

The Psalms are full of verses that tell us God is our Refuge. Psalm 62:8 is one such verse.

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart to Him, for God is our refuge.”

Psalm 62:8

David and the God of Refuge:

Because King Saul dishonored God and did not wait for the prophet Samuel to offer a sacrifice, God disowned Saul as King. As a result, God told Samuel to anoint David as king. But Saul still sat on the throne and David had many years before Saul’s death and David ruling as king. During those years, Saul was plagued with mental health problems and he grew jealous of David. He hunted David down and tried over and over to kill him. Because of Saul, David was constantly on the run for his life. But He trusted God and saw God faithfully protect him and keep him safe. He knew Elohim Machase Lanu from first hand experience.

Elohim Machase Lanu is our God of Refuge too:

Because God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, He is still God Our Refuge. Because God cannot lie, we can trust Him no matter what we face in life. He is the Rock of Ages in which we can hide. It doesn’t mean difficult times never come our way, but that when they do, we can hide in the shelter of His wings. There, we can find rest, renew our strength, and bask in His presence. There, we are reminded that He is Sovereign. He is in control. And He has only good plans for us. So even when the storm brings an unhappy ending, we can find our rest and peace in Him because at this end of this life – is eternal life in His presence.

Today’s Prayer:

Elohim Machase Lanu, thank you for being our Refuge. You know that we prefer a storm never come and that your protect us from it. But we know that it is often through the storms that our faith is grown and we learn to depend on you. So when the storm does come, help us to remember to run to you — our Rock of Ages and cleft in which we can hide. Father, show us who You are as we discover and learn about your many names. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.

Today’s verse to meditate on:

2 Chronicles 32:7-8
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
