1 Kings 21-22

John 3:1-21

Saved by Faith for Eternal Life

In Numbers 21, the Children of Israel were once again discourage and spoke against God and Moses, saying, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” So God sent fiery serpents and they bit the people, causing many of them to die. When they repented, God told Moses to make a bronze fiery serpent and set it on a pole and whoever looked at it, would live. It wasn’t the bronze serpent that brought about healing. It was the people’s faith in God and his provision that brought healing. They were saved by faith.

God was teaching the people something about faith. It is totally illogical to think that looking at a bronze image could heal anyone from snakebite, but that is exactly what God told them to do. It took an act of faith in God’s plan for anyone to be healed, and the serpent on the stick was a reminder of their sin which brought about their suffering. There is no connection between this serpent and the serpent which Satan spoke through in the Garden of Eden. This serpent was symbolic of the serpents God used to chastise the people for their unbelief.

The bronze serpent and the cross of Jesus

There is a spiritual application to what took place in the days of Moses. And it is this: we have sinned against God. God has pronounced death upon us all, because of the sin of Adam and our own sin. However, as Moses lifted up the bronze snake in the desert, Jesus was lifted up on the cross. He died our death – paying our debt, the wages we earned for our sin – so that we can now be forgiven. The challenge that comes to us today, therefore, is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Just as in Moses day, the people had to look on the bronze snake with faith to be healed physically form the poisonous snake bites, so we must look to Jesus with faith that He alone has the power to save us and cleanse us from our sin.

In his conversation with Nicodemus, Jesus uses this Old Testament story as a metaphor for Jesus’ future crucifixion. Just as those in Moses’ day looked upon the bronze serpent and were healed, those who look in faith to Jesus who was lifted up on a cross to pay our sin debt will be healed of their sins and have eternal life. Just like it wasn’t the actual bronze serpent that brought healing and life, looking upon a crucifix will not save us from our sins. It was the people’s faith in God that healed them of the snake bites and it is our faith in Jesus that gives us eternal life.

Just as those in Moses’ day looked upon the bronze serpent and were healed, those who look in faith to Jesus who was lifted up on a cross to pay our sin debt will be healed of their sins and have eternal life. — click to tweet

What does it mean to have faith in Jesus?

This faith in Jesus starts with believing that He is who He said He is – the only begotten Son of God. As such Jesus is fully God. While He lived on earth, He was both 100% God and 100% man.

The next step of faith is to realize that Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life while on earth, which makes it possible for Him to pay our sin debt. If He had sinned even once, then we would have no hope of salvation.

The next step is to realize our lostness in sin. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” There is not one single person, other than Jesus, who has lived a sinless life. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages or penalty for our sin is death but that the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. The gift God gave us was allowing His only Son to suffer the torture of being beaten, mocked, scourged, and crucified in our place. Jesus paid our sin debt.

The next step of faith is to believe that Jesus did rise from the dead three days later. If Jesus were still in a tomb, then death and the grave is not defeated and there is no eternal life. Today, Jesus is alive and sits at the right hand of God waiting for the day that God tells Him to come to earth again – but this time as a triumphant king.

The last step of faith is believing that the blood Jesus shed on the cross will cleanse you from all unrighteousness. There is absolutely nothing you can do to earn salvation. It is only by faith and through God’s gracious gift that salvation is possible.

Faith is the way to eternal life

For those who accept these truths by faith and come to Jesus and confess they are a sinner and ask for His forgiveness and ask Him to be the Lord of their life, then that person will have eternal life. Jesus was lifted up for you – will you by faith accept the eternal life He offers you?

1 Kings 19-20

John 2

Stop Sitting Under the Broom Tree

God chooses to reveal Himself however He chooses to. In the Garden of Eden, He met Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He spoke to several people through dreams. To Mary and Joseph, he sent an angel to deliver a message. For Elijah, in a moment of depression and burnout, he goes and sits under a broom tree for an old-fashioned pity party. But God met him there and sent him to a mountain where Elijah learns that God doesn’t always speak in the spectacular and miraculous ways. Sometimes He speaks through the still small voice.

From mountain top experience to the valley of shadow of death

For Elijah, He had just had the mountain top experience of God sending fire to consume a water-soaked sacrifice, proving to all of Israel that God is God and Baal is nothing. Elijah then rounded up all the prophets of Baal and executed them. When Queen Jezebel heard about it, she sent a messenger to Elijah to let him know she planed to have him killed by the next evening.

broom tree

Even though Elijah just experience God answering his prayer through a spectacular and miraculous way, he allows his fear to take over and he forgets the powerful display of God’s might with the sacrifice. The bold prophet who taunted the prophets of Baal now runs and hides. He goes out to the wilderness and sits down under a broom tree and asks God to let him die.

An exhausted and burned out prophet hides under a broom tree

In this moment, Elijah is physically and emotionally exhausted and as a result his faith crumbles. He is in deep depression. He demonstrates apathy, emotional distancing, a cynical attitude and a desire to escape from it all. Elijah also has a false sense of failure. Perhaps he believed that after God’s miraculous display of His power, all the people would turn away from Baal and follow God – but Queen Jezebel was furious over the execution of her prophets and now had a price on Elijah’s head. So Elijah, sees himself as a failure. Elijah is experiencing what we would call “burnout.”

God met Elijah at the broom tree

Even in the midst of Elijah’s depression and burnout – God meets him where he’s at and He miraculously provides for Elijah’s needs. Elijah needs rest, food, and spiritual nourishment.  As Elijah slept under the broom tree, God sends an angel who tells Elijah to get up and eat. When he wakes up he finds a cake baked on coals and a jar of water. He ate and then laid down and went back to sleep. God sends he angel again with the same message. So Elijah gets up and eats and the Bible tells us that he went on the strength of that food for 40 days and 40 nights all the way to the mountain of God.

From the broom tree to the mountain of God

God brings Elijah back to the place where the covenant had been given, the place where his personal faith would also be nourished. Elijah goes into a cave and spent the night there. During the night the “word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9) Elijah replied: “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

Read that again. Where is the emphases being placed? This verse is all about Elijah – Elijah was very zealous for the Lord. Elijah was all alone. Why? Because the children of Israel forsook God and killed all the other prophets – and now they want to kill Elijah too.

A burned out prophet with tunnel vision

We might say Elijah has the right to be depressed and to run away. He’s scared. He feels alone. He has shifted his focus from God and now has tunnel vision. Instead of seeing God at work, he only sees this predicament he is now in. It almost sounds like he is whining about his predicament and maybe even blaming God that he’s in this predicament to start with.

Don’t we do that too? We go all out for God – giving Him 100% of what we have to give – maybe even more. And then when we hit the point of exhaustion we forget all that God has been doing through us and we acquire tunnel vision so that all we can see the right now – this moment. Then we want to throw in the towel. Quit. Blame God that it didn’t work out.

A prophet at a crossroads

But God is not caught off guard by Queen Jezebel wanting to kill Elijah. And God still has work for Elijah to do. But Elijah is at a crossroad in His faith. So God meets him where he is – let’s see what happens next.

From hiding under a broom tree to an encounter with God

God tells Elijah to go out and stand on the mountain before Him and there God reveals Himself to Elijah. Whenever we find ourselves under a broom tree, exhausted, depressed and feeling alone, God longs to reveal Himself to us. And this is what He does for Elijah. First, God reveals His greatness and power through wind, earthquake, fire – but in all of these God was not there – just his power. Then, when everything gets quiet, God speaks in a still small voice.

God can speak to us in any way He chooses. And when he speaks, it is in the way we most need it. Exhausted, depressed, and afriad for his life, Elijah didn’t need in that moment a God who spoke in the wind, earthquake, or fire. What he needed was the still, soft, small voice of a Good Shepherd who would lead by still waters to refresh his soul and remind him that he would be with him in the valley of the shadow of death — or on the mountain top.

God still speaks in a still, small voice

He still speaks today in the same still, small voice. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” It can be difficult in today’s fast paced world to just be still – and even if we sit still for five minutes, our minds are still going.

If we are honest with ourselves, we’ve all been “under the broom tree” with Elijah. There has probably been a time when you have given all you have to serving God and it seems that all your efforts are in vain. You feel drained, broken, and have no idea what to do next. Instead of running to God, you run from whatever God wants you to do and sit under a “broom tree” and have a pity party. God still had work for Elijah to do and he has work for you to do. So stop sitting under your “broom tree” and seek out the God who will refresh you soul.

We constantly want to see God move in big, powerful ways – after all He is a big, powerful God. But more often than not, God reveals Himself when we simply be still. It’s then we can hear His voice.

God’s still, small voice message: “You are not alone”

The still small voice of God reveals to Elijah that he was not the last prophet alive, as Elijah assumed. God told him there were still 7000 people alive that had not bowed down to Baal that He could choose to work through. And if you are sitting under a broom tree today – God wants you to know that you are not alone. It’s time for you to get up and eat – get re-nourished spiritually. Maybe you need to return to the place where God first called you. Maybe you need to take a weekend away and get alone with God and just be still. Whatever you need to do to breathe life back into the ministry God has called you to do – God will meet you there. What will He reveal to you? It’s time to find out – arise and eat! Be still in His presence. Listen for His still small voice.

One Year Bible Reading Plan

1 Kings 16-18

John 1:29-51

Whom will you follow?

We all know people who claim to be Christian, but if you look at how they live their lives you can’t tell much difference between them and the rest of the world. They dress like the world, talk like the world, and eat and drink like the world. They might show up for church on Sunday, wearing their best clothes and best smile. And they lift their hands in the praise songs and as soon as church is over and they are back in the car, they look just like the world again. It’s as if they can’t decided who’s side they are on – team Jesus or team Satan. It leaves you wanting to ask, “Whom will you follow?!”

Elijah challenges Israel to decide whom to follow

In 1 Kings 18, we find the prophet Elijah who challenges the Israelites to decide what God they are going to follow. Throughout Israel’s history, they had a tendency of worshipping false gods. At this particular time, the false god was Baal. Elijah tells Ahab to gather all of Israel to Mount Carmel along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah and he then issues his challenge.

He pits himself as the loan prophet of God against all the prophets of Baal. He tells the people to built two altars and bring two bulls – one for him and one for all the prophets of Baal. They each prepare the bull for sacrifice and lay the wood on the altar – but Elijah tells them to not put any fire on the sacrifice. Instead the prophets of Baal would call on their God to send down fire and Elijah would call on his God for fire. The God that answered by sending fire to consume the sacrifice would be identified as the one true God. The people all agreed that this was a good solution.

When you follow a false god, don’t expect an answer from him

Elijah then let the prophets of Baal go first. The people prepared their altar and bull and laid the wood on it. They called on Baal from morning till noon – but there was no answer and no fire. They began leaping around the altar – still no answer. Then around noon Elijah calls out, mocking them, telling them to cry louder because maybe he is meditating or busy or away on a journey or sleeping. So they cry out to Baal louder and begin cutting themselves until blood gushed out on them – but still, there was no answer from Baal … and no fire.

When you follow God, expect an answer

Now it’s Elijah’s turn. He calls all the people near him. He takes 12 stones and rebuilds the altar of the Lord and dug a trench around it. Elijah puts the wood on the altar, cut the bull in pieces and laid them on the wood. Then he told the people to fill four water pots with water and pour it on the sacrifice and wood. They did this three times, so that when they poured the water on the sacrifice and wood, it filled the trench around the altar in the process – in other words, the sacrifice and wood were drenched so that a fire would be about impossible to burn.

Then Elijah steps up and prays: “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” God answered Elijah’s prayer – not in words, but in results! Fire came down from heaven and consumed the drenched sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and dust. It licked up all the water that was in the trench. Only one prayer. God answered. That’s the power of a living God for one who believes and trusts in Him.

We Live in a World of Brokenness

We live in a world full of brokenness. There is pain, poverty, disasters, disease, war, and death. But this is not God’s original design – a perfect design. God has a perfect design for this world He created. But His perfect design moved to brokenness when sin entered our world. Sin is turning away from God’s design and pursuing our own way. And this leads us us to brokenness. Brokenness and sin leads us to death and this death will leave us separated from God forever. But God does not want us to stay in brokenness and sin. So He has made a way out and that way is Jesus. Jesus comes and enters into our brokenness and the death that we deserve for pursing brokenness, Jesus takes our place and dies on a cross as His body is broken for us. Then three days after He died, he rose from the dead, making a way for us out of our brokenness and sin. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, John said, ““Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

How do we get out of our brokenness?

From the first sin in the Garden of Eden to today, people have tried many ways to get out of their brokenness. They search for a way out through careers, hobbies, relationships, sex, drugs, religions, education and countless other things they think will fill the void that our brokenness leaves in our lives. But none of these things will get us out of our brokenness. The only way out is Jesus. And if we turn from our sin and believe that Jesus died for us and rose from the dead, we can leave our brokenness and grow in a relationship with God and pursue His design.

Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – All of us, including me and including you. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” This is God’s free gift to us. There is nothing we can do to earn it. Isaiah 64:6 says, “All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment.” Because sin pollutes us and leave us broken, Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3:3, “I tell you the truth, unless a man [or woman] is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” There is only one way to receive eternal life. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Receiving Eternal Life

So how do we receive this free gift of eternal life? Romans 10:9-11 says, “That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord; and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be save. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, ‘Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.'” When we confess our sins and believer in our heart that Jesus, who lived a sinless life, died and rose again, paying for us – in our place – the wages of sin that we have earned, we then no longer live for ourselves. 2 Corinthians 5:15 says, “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.” And in verse 17, Paul writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.”

There are two types of people in the world. Those who are pursing God’s design and those who are still lost in your brokenness? Which are you? In Revelation 3:20, Jesus says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.” If you are still lost in your brokenness and sin, Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart right now. Will you let him come in?

God is asking America today – In whom will you trust?

Today, America is not longer a nation who can honestly have a slogan that says, “In God do we trust.” We have become a broken nation with no absolutes in what is right or wrong. In the name of equality, we tolerate all religions, regardless of what god is worshiped – and we call it progress. We remove the Ten Commandments from our courts of law. However, the problem with having no absolutes, is that people are gender confused. Morality is non-existent. Crime and violence are everywhere. Truth is relevant to the person and the moment.

There is only one God and He already set the standard for right and wrong. We find that standard in our Bible. We can change His laws so that we can live the way we want to and not feel guilt, but God will never change His laws so we are never guiltless. When we stand before Him, it will be by His laws that He judges us. It is by His laws that we are found to be broken sinners. Our sin separates us from God. By his laws, the wages we earn for our sin, is death.

Each one of us today must decide if we will follow God – or someone/something else. You can’t travel down both paths. Your are either lost in brokenness or you are pursing God’s design. You are either all in for Jesus or all in for Satan. Whom will you follow?
