Great Is Thy Faithfulness

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

How does the prophet, Jeremiah, proclaim God’s great faithfulness when we find throughout the book of Jeremiah, the prophet over and over again warning the people of God’s coming judgement? And then we come to  the book of Lamentations, which is a lament.  In the Alexandrian form of the Greek Septuagint, the following words precede the first verse of Lamentations:

“And it came to pass, after Israel had been carried away captive, and Jerusalem became desolate, that Jeremiah sat weeping, and lamented with this lamentation over Jerusalem.”

When in a season of sorrow, it’s important to remember God’s faithfulness

The book is  written with a sorrowful mind, with great sighing and moaning. It is written out of a broken heart for the nation that would not repent. Imagine that God has called you to be a prophet to His chosen people and to warn them of His coming judgment because of their idolatry and sin, but they refused to listen. Would you feel like you had failed God? Would you feel like you had failed your nation? Perhaps you would you go to bed at night wondering what else you could have done or said that might have made the people turn back to God?

If we can step into Jeremiah’s shoes, we can feel the broken heart with which he laments over what has happened and the sad events that resulted in him writing the five poems of lament that make up the book of Lamentations. (click to tweet)  Yet, even in this season of lament and sorrow, we find in Lamentations 3:22-23 that Jeremiah remembers God’s faithfulness.

Jerusalem destroyed, but there is hope because of God’s faithfulness

In 586 B.C. the Babylonian army destroyed Jerusalem and burned the temple, palace and city – exactly as God said it would happen and Jeremiah had warned the people it would happen. The book also alludes to the famine in Jerusalem, the breach of the city walls, the exile of the people, the looting of the temple, and the execution of the leaders.

Yet even in all this, we can also find hope because of God’s great faithfulness.  In Chapter 3, verses 22-23, Jeremiah issues a remarkable testimony to the extent of divine grace. Right in the middle of the five chapters of lamenting and weeping, there is a ray of hope and sunshine and in the midst of Jeremiah’s depression and despondency, he teaches us about the unceasing mercies of God. (click to tweet) From these two verses, we learn four important characteristic of God that can bring hope to all of us no matter what circumstances we may find ourselves in: God is steadfast, loving, merciful, and faithful.

Four characteristics of the faithfulness of God that brings hope in any circumstance

Characteristic 1: God’s faithfulness is because of His great love for us

Verse 22 begins with God’s lovingkindness, or in the NIV Bible, we find that it is because of God’s great love that we are not consumed by the righteous and holy God. The Holman Bible Dictionary notes that the Hebrew word, chesed, is the Old Testament’s highest expression for love and refers to God’s election, covenant-keeping, or steadfast love. It is a love that remains constant regardless of circumstances. It doesn’t matter how much I love God or if I choose to turn my back and walk away from God, God will always love me – even enough to send Jesus to die for my sins while I was still his enemy (Romans 5:8). (Click to tweet)

God’s faithfulness never ends because his great love never ends

The next thing we find is that God’s lovingkindness never ends. It is steadfast. To be steadfast, is to be resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering. It is loyal, committed, and dependable. It is enduring patiently, reliable, true to the end. God’s love for us never ceases. He ALWAYS loves. In fact, 1 John 4:8 says that God IS love. It part of who He is. (Click to tweet)

Characteristic 2: We can depend on God’s faithfulness because his compassion never ends

We also find that God’s compassion never fail. Some translations use the word “compassion” and some use “mercies.”  The Hebrew word translated here mercies is used 250 times in the Old Testament. It is a sweeping, all-inclusive term for God’s love, goodness, forgiveness, compassion, and faithfulness. Even in the bleakness of God’s discipline, there was hope. Judah would not be permanently destroyed, but ultimately restored.

Mercy is a characteristic and action that comes from the very nature of God and is the foundation of forgiveness. Mercy from God is never given based on our merit, but as God’s gift to us. (Click to tweet)  It is His unending mercy that allows us to come into His presence day after day, sin after sin, to seek His forgiveness. Exodus 34:6-7 says, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth; who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.”

God’s justice and righteousness cannot be overlooked. Israel, learned this the hard way. We can’t expect to continuously live any way we want, ignoring God and then run and ask forgiveness and expect that at some point God doesn’t step in with justice and righteousness. (click to tweet)

Characteristic 3: God’s mercy renews every morning

But there is another thing we can see about God’s mercy – it renews every morning. Every day, God has a new supply of mercy. He will never run out. He doesn’t use it all up on one person and then doesn’t have enough for me. And because He is merciful, he offers a way of salvation rather than leaving us dead in our trespasses and sin. (click to tweet)  Salvation is God’s merciful act of withholding His wrath and eternal punishment woven with His grace in granting both forgiveness of sin and trading our sin for eternal life. There is absolutely nothing we can do to get God’s mercy. Romans 9:15-16 says, “I will show mercy to whom I show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

Mercy is 100% dependent on God who chooses to show mercy. We can make no claim on God’s mercies. They are completely undeserved – and yet they never cease. Like Israel, we have done much to provoke God’s anger and abused His mercy. We have ignored it and turned our backs on it and are just a haughty as Israel was in thinking that God will not judge. But at times, God’s judgment is also His mercy towards us because His chastisement is more merciful than allowing us to continue down a path that will bring us harm. God will always adapt the expression and action of His mercy towards us so that it meets our immediate need – even if that mercy comes in the form of judgment.

Characteristic 4: God is faithful and because of his faithfulness he offers us great love and mercy

The fourth thing we see about God is that he is faithful. He is trustworthy and dependable. We may fall short and miss the mark, but God never will. He will always be faithful to offer us His great love and mercy. (Click to tweet)  From the first sin in the garden of Eden all the way down through time to today, God’s unmistakable pattern is seen over and over again: Sin and disobedience brings consequences, but confession and repentance always brings forgiveness and a restored relationship with God. (click to tweet)

It is difficult to fully understand the depth of God’s faithfulness

It can be difficult for us to fully understand the depth of God’s faithfulness because we live in a world filled with broken promises and disappointment. We have, at times, even been guilty of breaking promises and disappointing both God and others. But when we take the time to acknowledge the times in our life where God has been faithful, we can be reminded of just how great His faithfulness is towards us. We can remember how He has provided for our  needs, given us courage when we were afraid, loved us when it seemed as if everyone else had turned their backs on us, sent us a brother or sister in Christ with a word of encouragement just when we needed it, and when he was faithful to us when no one else was.

In difficult times, we can experiences God’s faithfulness and great love

Jeremiah lived through a very dark, depressing, overwhelmingly difficult time. We can experience our own difficult days and just as God’s lovingkindness reached out to Jeremiah and His mercies did not fail and God’s faithfulness came shining through in the darkness, so He does for us in the middle of our circumstances. Take some time to reflect on the faithfulness of God and His lovingkindness and mercy that never ends.

God’s Great Faithfulness

Jesus’ Faithfulness towards us gives us strength and protection

On an employee bulletin board someone in management posted a flyer that said, “In case of fire, flee the building with the same reckless abandon that occurs each day at quitting time.” Thankfully in the “fires” of our life, Jesus doesn’t leave us with reckless abandon to handle it on our own. Instead, His great faithfulness gives us strength and He acts as protection to us against the evil one (Satan).

When devastation comes, are you sure of God’s faithfulness?

In the Bible, an Old Testament poet writes of his own struggles of learning about God’s faithfulness. Because of Israel’s sin, God had predicted through the prophet, Isaiah, that the nation would be conquered and the people carried off into exile. What was left behind was a destruction so devastating that it was hard to believe it had been caused by mere humans.

The strong, fortified city walls laid in ruins. Buildings, great and small, had been toppled and lay scattered on the ground. Everywhere, there was death and mangled bodies. The few not dead yet, moaned in pain from their injuries. Others would be dead soon.

From this scene, we find our poet staggering out. As he looks around him, the utter horror and devastation he sees is clearly etched in his face. Everything he has ever known in life is gone. He sinks to his knees as gut wrenching sobs pour forth from the deepest part of his soul. As the small remnant of people still alive and able to move begin emerging from their hiding places, more sobs fill the air.

Can disaster come from the hand of God?

When people seek counseling, therapists often will encourage them to journal their thoughts to help them process what has happened to them. Our poet doesn’t have a therapist, but he begins to process his emotions as he puts his thought in writing in the form of a letter to the other survivors. In it, he expresses his grief, attempts to work out his thoughts about God, and tries to make sense out of what has happened to them all.

In Lamentations 3:1-20 you can hear his utter heartbreak, but you will also learn that he is a believer who told others about God even though they laughed at him. Our poet writes in total honesty, as he tells of his own disillusionment with God and acknowledges that what had happened to them was the work and hand of God. God didn’t just allow it to happen – he had planned it. Orchestrated it. Caused it to happen. It was his judgement on a nation that chose idolatry and worship of false gods while turning their back on the One true God who had called them out and chosen them for His very own.

The People broke their Covenant with God

Yes, God brought the destruction, chaos, and devastation on his own chosen people. When God brought them out of Egypt and established his covenant with them, the covenant had an “if…then” clause. If his people followed after Him and obeyed his commandments, then he would bless them. But if they chose to follow after other God and turn their back on them, then he would bring judgement on them. He even told them exactly what that judgment would be. He then even sent prophet after prophet to remind and warn the people about the consequences of their choice to reject God and worship idols. But they didn’t listen. Often they ridiculed and even killed the prophets God sent, trying “hush” the message so they could continue to live the way the wanted. Finally, God said, “Enough!” and the promised judgment came.

When you feel there is nothing left to pin your hopes on God’s faithfulness is still there

The hurt and devastation for our poet doesn’t end there. He also feels that God is angry at him and against him. As a result, he feels he has nothing left to pin his hopes on for a future different from his new reality. He is depressed and he is in shock. What’s more, our poet is none other than one of God’s own prophets – Jeremiah – and his letter has been persevered as the book of Lamentations in our Bible.

Maybe at some point in your life you have been able to relate to Jeremiah. Maybe your are there now. As a resident of Florida with our share of hurricanes, many have seen destruction such as Jeremiah did. I think of how last year hurricane Dorian sat over the Bahama Islands and the photos that began to appear on the news of the destruction that hurricane left behind.  Those photos, to me, represent the utter destruction that Jeremiah saw in his day.

Maybe the utter destruction you have faced wasn’t a physical one, but an emotional one – such as a cancer diagnosis or the accidental death of a child.  Maybe for you, it was several things in your life back to back that left you wondering if God was angry with you. Whatever, your utter destruction is, the effects are the same and your emotions and feeling are/were probably very similar to Jeremiah’s.

Focusing on the Truth’s of God Keeps you Going even in the Darkest Moments

Despite it all, Jeremiah kept his focus on one truth that kept him going even in the darkest moment of his life. This truth became his weapon against depression and despair. He held nothing back in his letter of how he felt. He expressed anger, grief, and shock and then he writes Lamentations 3:21-23:

“Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”

These verses can become your weapon against the emotions that threaten to drown you too. Fear, anxiety, depression, hopelessness. None of them can stand up against God’s mercy and faithfulness. It never runs out.

The Thessalonican Church

The Thessalonican church in Paul’s day was birthed in the midst of Christians being persecuted. Paul wrote to them knowing, they of all people, would understand how he was being persecuted. He asked them to pray for him so the the Lord’s message would spread rapidly and be honored. He also asked them to pray that he would be delivered from the wicked and evil men who intended to do him harm. This request was then followed by the following words of encouragement to the Thessalonian church:

“But the Lord is faithful; He will strengthen and guard you from the evil one.”

Remember God’s past Faithfulness

When we go through trials, persecution, or difficulties, it can be easy to forget all the times that God has been there for us in the past. Our mind is so focused on the “right now moment”, the pain and suffering that we feel, the grief and sorrow, the fear and anxiety, the uncertainty in the midst of it all, that it can’t recall God’s faithfulness. It can be helpful to keep a journal of all the times that God has been faithful to us in the past.

Raise your Ebenezer…wait! My what?

If you have ever sung the old Hymn, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, then you are familiar with the following lyrics: “here I raise my Ebenezer.” But what’s an Ebenezer? Samuel recognized the importance of being able to recall God’s faithfulness. In 1 Samuel 7, he takes a stone and set it upright between Mizpah and Shen and then he named it Ebenezer and said, “The Lord has helped us to this point.” From that moment forward, every time he or the people saw the stone, they were reminded of God’s faithfulness to them.

You too can raise an Ebenezer. Try collecting (or purchasing) some stones of various sizes, but able to go into a vase, tray, or box. Think back to times in your life what God’s faithfulness was apparent to you. Write a single word or two on a rock that will help you remember that time. Use a rock for each memory of God’s faithfulness. As you go through life and see God’s faithfulness to you, add a rock and include the date on the other side. Then in those moments of doubt, insecurity, pain, and devastation, let your Ebenezers remind you of God’s faithfulness and know that He will be faithful to you in your current circumstances as well.

Remember God is in Control

Even though God brought judgment on His people, God was still in control of what was happening to them. Throughout the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah, we see God telling these prophets exactly what would happen and He establishes that He is making it all happen. It was God who sent the Babylonians and Assyrians to conquer, destruct, and carry is people into exile. And when the people had been punished, God moves the heart of the king to begin sending the exiled people back to the promised land.

For the Thessalonican church who was being persecuted, God knew everything that was happening and out of that persecution, the Gospel messages spread around the world. God was just as faithful to the early churches as He was to the nation of Israel. He is just as faithful to us today as He was to the people in the Bible. In fact, faithfulness is one of God’s characteristics – its just who He is. It would be impossible for God to not be faithful. Faithful is who He is.

God’s Faithfulness gives strength and protection

Knowing God is in control, even in devastating and chaotic times, can bring us comfort because we know that He also protects us from what the evil one plans. The Bible tells us that Satan is constantly roaming the earth, seeking whom he may devour. We see in the life of Job how Satan brought chaos and destruction – but yet Satan couldn’t do anything to Job without God allowing it. Job couldn’t see it in the moment, but he was totally 100% safe in the hands of God

We may not understand why we are going through something. We may ask God why he would allow what’s going on to happen. Whether we understand the why or not, we can find both strength to endure and rest knowing that even in “this” (whatever your “this” is) God is in control and protect us from utter destruction. Your devastation and chaos may mean your life on this world will end but as God’s child, your soul is eternally safe in the hands of God. He’s wrote your name in the palm of His hand. God carries you in the palm of His hand. He walks with you through the fire so that you will not be consumed. He goes with you through the waters so you will not be overwhelmed.

Remember His Faithfulness

By keeping a journal or Ebenezers of the times God has been faithful to you, it can help you remember His faithfulness to you when your mind is so devastated and torn by grief that it can’t recall it. As you pull out the journal in those moments and read through your entries or hold one rock after another in your hand, you can find peace and comfort and know that God will be faithful again. You will also find reassurance that He’s also right now working in the present situation…even if you can’t see it right now. So praise Him through this storm too, know that He is in control and He’s right now working all things out for your good and for His best plan for you.

Take a moment and think about the lyrics to the 1923 Hymn, Great is Thy Faithfulness (© 1923. Ren. 1951 Hope Publishing Co., Carol Stream, IL 60188. www.hopepublishing.com):

Great is Thy faithfulness
O God my Father
There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not
Thy compassions they fail not
As Thou hast been
Thou forever will be

Great is Thy faithfulness.
Great is Thy faithfulness.
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
And all I have needed Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer
And to guide
Strength for today
and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside

Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
And all I have needed Thy hands hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord unto me

Hebrews 9:12. The Eternal Blood Donor

by Julia M. Bruce,

Image result for crucifixion of jesus

But by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

                       –Hebrews 9:12

Have you ever given blood? Years ago when I was in a car accident and doctors were considering surgery, they began looking to relatives to donate blood. My dad had the same blood type, but had cancer so they couldn’t use his. My younger sister had the same blood type, but she was pregnant, so they couldn’t use hers. Her husband was also the same blood type and he donated blood for me. I’m not a rare blood type. However, the rarest type is AB negative and only 1 in 167 people (0.6% of the population) have it. On a bloodmobile sign one day was the following statement: “The rarest blood type is the one that’s not there when you need it.”

On the other hand, a person with O-negative is considered a universal donor because it can be mixed with any other blood type and have the ability to save lives. However, it’s life saving power is only temporary because everyone is appointed to die at some point (Hebrews 9:27)

There is yet another supply of blood and it has power to give eternal life and is available to everyone – simply for the asking. 1 John 1:7 tells us, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Adam and Eve are the only humans that ever had a choice to live or die. They were told not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil for in the day they did eat of it they would die. When they chose to eat it, they chose death and that meant death for every person throughout history. Jesus also had a choice and He chose death – but His death would give us the choice to choose eternal life by faith in Him or eternal separation by rejecting Him.

In the Old Testament, animals were sacrificed on the altar by a priest so that the people could have forgiveness of sin but it had to be done over and over again. It was the death of Jesus and the shedding of His blood that satisfied our sin debt to a holy God as the payment of our sins. Because Christ choose death, we can choose to cry out in faith to God, repent of our sin, ask for His forgiveness and find salvation and eternal life. Through His blood that cleanses us from all sin, He gives us eternal life – now that’s a blood transfusion!

Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Lamentations 3:22-23. Great Is Thy Faithfulness

by Julia M. Bruce,

Lamentations 3 22-23

Throughout the book of Jeremiah, we find the prophet over and over again warning the people of God’s coming judgement. Then we come to  the book of Lamentations, which is a lament.  In the Alexandrian form of the Greek Septuagint, the following words precede the first verse of Lamentations:

“And it came to pass, after Israel had been carried away captive, and Jerusalem became desolate, that Jeremiahs sat weeping, and lamented with this lamentation over Jerusalem.”

Would you go to bed at night wondering what else you could have done or said that might have made the people turn back to God? If we can step into Jeremiah’s shoes, we can feel the broken heart with which he laments over what has happened and the sad events that resulted in him writing the five poems of lament that make up the book of Lamentations. (click to tweet) In 586 B.C. the Babylonian army destroyed Jerusalem and burned the temple, palace and city – exactly as God said it would happen and Jeremiah had warned the people it would happen. The book also alludes to the famine in Jerusalem, the breach of the city walls, the exile of the people, the looting of the temp, and the execution of the leaders.

Verse 22 begins with God’s lovingkindness.

Exodus 34:6-7 says, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth; who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.” God’s justice and righteousness cannot be overlooked. Israel, learned this the hard way. We can’t expect to continuously live any way we want, ignoring God and then run and ask forgiveness and expect that at some point God doesn’t step in with justice and righteousness. (click to tweet)

Romans 9:15-16 says, “I will show mercy to whom I show mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” Mercy is 100% dependent on God who chooses to show mercy.

(click to tweet) It can be difficult for us to fully understand the depth of God’s faithfulness because we live in a world filled with broken promises and disappointment.
