If you missed Monday’s post, start by reading it here. Revival begins with a humble heart that is willing to to say, ” Search me O God.” Each day this week we will focus on a different area of our lives to ask God to search our hearts for anything offensive within us.
Today’s “Search Me” prayer:
Search me, O God, and know my heart. See if there is anything offensive with me in regards to the words I use and my thoughts.
Search Me, O God, for the acceptable words I speak:
There are two verses to focus on as you ask God to search you for how you speak. The first is Psalm 19:14, which says: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, OÂ Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Are your words acceptable only on Sunday when you’re in church or are they acceptable Monday-Saturday, too? What about when you step on legos in the dark? Are they acceptable when the children are misbehaving? What about when your spouse irritates you? Are your words acceptable in rush hour traffic?
Search Me, O God, for the acceptable words I speak:
The second verse to consider is Ephesians 4:29, which says: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Corrupting talk tears other people down. It is negative, condescending, complaining, or any other ungodly way we speak.
Spend some quiet time alone with God and for anything He reveals to you, seek His forgiveness. Ask God to convict you of any time your words are corrupting and unacceptable to Him. Ask Him to help you speak words that build others up and show grace. If you catch yourself using corrupting talk, immediately ask God to forgive you, then say three acceptable things about the person or situation for which you spoke corrupting words.
