1 Kings 19:11-12. Stop Sitting Under the Broom Tree!

May 9 1 Kings 19 11-12

God chooses to reveal Himself however He chooses to. In the Garden of Eden, He met Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He spoke to several people through dreams. To Mary and Joseph, he sent an angel to deliver a message. For us today, He speaks through the still small voice of the Holy Spirit’s promptings within us as we read the Bible and pray.

For Elijah, He had just had the mountain top experience of God sending fire to consume a water-soaked sacrifice, proving to all of Israel that God is God and Baal is nothing. Elijah then rounded up all the prophets of Baal and executed them. When Queen Jezebel heard about it, she sent a messenger to Elijah to let him know she planed to have him killed by the next evening. Elijah allows his fear to take over and he forgets the powerful display of God’s might with the sacrifice and he runs and hides. He goes out to the wilderness and sits down under a broom tree and asks God to let him die. In this moment, Elijah is physically and emotionally exhausted and as a result his faith crumbles. He is in deep depression. He demonstrates apathy, emotional distancing, a cynical attitude and a desire to escape from it all. He also has a false sense of failure. Elijah is experiencing what we would call “burnout.”

Even in the midst of Elijah’s depression and burnout – God meets him where he’s at and He miraculously provides for Elijah’s needs. Elijah needs rest, food, and spiritual nourishment.  As Elijah slept under the broom tree, God sends and angel who tells Elijah to get up and eat. When he wakes up he finds a cake baked on coals and a jar of water. The ate and then laid down and went back to sleep. God sends he angel again with the same message. So Elijah gets up and eats and the Bible tells us that he went on the strength of that food for 40 days and 40 nights all the way to the mountain of God. God brings Elijah back to the place where the covenant had been give, the place where his personal faith would also be nourished. Elijah goes into a cave and spent the night there. During the night the “word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:9) Elijah replied: “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.” Read that again. Where is the emphases being placed? This verse is all about Elijah – Elijah was very zealous for the Lord. Elijah was all alone. Why? Because the children of Israel forsook God and killed all the other prophets – and now they want to kill Elijah too. We might say Elijah has the right to be depressed and to run away. He’s scared. He feels alone. And it almost sounds like he is whining about his predicament and maybe even blaming God that he’s in this predicament to start with. Don’t we do that too? We go all out for God – giving Him 100% of what we have to give – maybe even more. And then when we hit the point of exhaustion we forget all that God has been doing through us and we acquire tunnel vision so that all we can see the right now – this moment. Then we want to throw in the towel. Quit. Blame God that it didn’t work out. But God is not caught off guard by Queen Jezebel wanting to kill Elijah. And God still has work for Elijah to do. But Elijah is at a crossroad in His faith. So God meets him where he is – let’s see what happens next.

God tells Elijah to go out and stand on the mountain before Him and there God reveals Himself to Elijah. Whenever we find ourselves under a broom tree, exhausted, depressed and feeling alone, God longs to reveal Himself to us. And this is what He does for Elijah. First, God reveals His greatness and power through wind, earthquake, fire – but in all of these God was not there – just his power. Then, when everything gets quiet, God speaks it a still small voice. He still speaks today in the same still, small voice. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” It can be difficult in today’s fast paced world to just be still – and even if we sit still for five minutes, our minds are still going.

If we are honest with ourselves, we’ve all been “under the broom tree” with Elijah. We have given all we have to serving God and it seems that all our efforts are in vain. We feel drained, broken, and have no idea what to do next. So we run from whatever God wants us to do and sit under the broom tree and have a pity party. We constantly want to see God move in big, powerful ways – after all He is a big, powerful God. But more often than not, God reveals Himself when we simply be still. It’s then we can hear His voice.

The still small voice of God reveals to Elijah that he was not the last prophet alive. God may 9 ctttold him there were still 7000 people alive that had not bowed down to Baal that He could choose to work through. And if you are sitting under a broom tree today – God wants you to know that you are not alone. It’s time for you to get up and eat – get re-nourished spiritually. Maybe you need to return to the place where God first called you. Maybe you need to take a weekend away and get alone with God and just be still. Whatever you need to do to breathe life back into the ministry God has called you to do – God will meet you there. What will He reveal to you? It’s time to find out – arise and eat! Be still in His presence. Listen for His still small voice.

1 Kings 18:21. Whom Will You Follow?

May 8 1 Kings 18 21

We all know people who claim to be Christian, but if you look at how they live their lives you can’t tell much difference between them and the rest of the world. They dress like the world, talk like the world, and eat and drink like the world. They might show up for church on Sunday, wearing their best clothes and best smile. They lift their hands in the praise songs and as soon as church is over and they are back in the car, they look just like the world again.

In 1 Kings 18, we find Elijah who challenges the Israelites to decide what God they are going to follow. Throughout Israel’s history, they had a tendency of worshipping false gods. At this particular time, the false god was Baal. Elijah tells Ahab to gather all of Israel to Mount Carmel along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah and he then issues his challenge. He pits himself as the loan prophet of God against all the prophets of Baal. He tells the people two built two altars and bring two bulls – one for him and one for all the prophets of Baal. They each prepare the bull for sacrifice and lay the wood on the altar – but Elijah tells them to not put any fire on the sacrifice. Instead the prophets of Baal would call on their God to send down fire and Elijah would call on his God for fire. The God that answered by sending fire to consume the sacrifice would be identified as the one true God. The people all agreed that this was a good solution. They prepared their altar and bull and laid the wood on it. Elijah then let the prophets of Baal go first. They called on Baal from morning till noon – but there was no answer and no fire. They began leaping around the altar – still no answer. Then around noon Elijah calls out, mocking them, telling them to cry louder because maybe he is meditating or busy or away on a journey or sleeping. So they cry out to Baal louder and begin cutting themselves until blood gushed out on them – but no answer from Baal and no fire.

Now it’s Elijah’s turn. He calls all the people near him. He takes 12 stones and rebuild theMay 8 ctt altar of the Lord and dug a trench around it. He put the wood on the altar, but the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he told the people to fill four waterpots with water and pour it on the sacrifice and wood. They did this three times, filling the trench around the altar in the process. Then Elijah steps up and prays: “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and dust. It licked up all the water that was in the trench. Only one prayer. God answered.

Today, we still must decide if we will follow God – or someone/something else. You can’t travel down both paths. You are either all in or all out. Which are you?

John 1:14. When the Word Dwelt Among Us

may 5 1 Kings 12 8 KJV

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live on earth at the same time Jesus did? I’ve heard people talk about going over to the Holy Land and walking in the same traditional spots that Jesus would have walked, seeing the Garden of Gethsemane where he prayed, seeing the traditional place people believe he was buried and rose again. Even seeing those things and walking in the same area He walked has to be thrilling for any believer. I mean, Jesus was God in the flesh and came to dwelt among the very people He created. What’s not exciting about that?

In the opening of the book of John, John presents Jesus as the eternal “Word-become-flesh” Son of God that was pre-existent before the creation of the world. The very “word” of God was spoken and everything about our universe came into being. Then, God’s only begotten Son stepped out of the splendor and glory of heaven and took on flesh so that He could live among us, die for us, and rise again so that we could have eternal life.

The word “dwelt” literally means “pitched His tent.” If you remember, God “dwelt” among the Israelites after they left Egypt in the tabernacle, which was a tent. That was then followed by the temple after Solomon built it. At best, God’s voice was heard or he was seen as a cloud or pillar of fire. But with his birth, Jesus took on flesh and lived, breathed, talked, and walked among the people of His day. He felt hunger, pain, cold, hurt, disappointment, anger – everything we do. He was both 100% human and 100% God.

Today, as Christians, we say that Jesus lives in our heart. The idea of Jesus living in our hearts comes from Ephesians 3:17, which says, “and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love.” In Romans 5:5, Paul wrote that “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” So for those who have recognized they are sinners and have a need for a Savior, have repented of their sins, and place their faith and trust in His death and resurrection become children of God (John 1:12-13). As a result, Galatians 4:6 says “God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying ‘Abba! Father!'” The word “Abba” is much like our word for daddy – it’s personal. There are only three people in this world who get to call my Dad, “Daddy” and that’s me and my two sisters. We have that privilege because we are his daughters. But when Jesus became my Savior, I also was “born again” into the family of God – and now I have the privilege of calling Elohiem – the God who created the heavens and the earth with just His spoken word – Daddy. The Great “I AM” is my spiritual daddy. As His child, I can call out to Him, “Abba! Father!” No matter what I face in life, Elohiem is my Abba.

Just as my actions, words, and behavior reflect on my parents, because I am a child of God, my actions, words, and behaviors reflect on my spiritual Father. Because He lives in us, we should live in a Christ-like way that honors and glorifies who our Father is. Our words and behaviors should honor Him. What we do when we think no one sees should honor God. What we say when no one is around to hear it, should honor God. Our thoughts should honor Him. The places we go should honor Him. How we treat others should honor Him. I’m reminded of a song we used to sing as children:

Oh be careful little mouth what you say
Oh be careful little mouth what you say
For the Father up above Is looking down in love
Oh be careful little mouth what you say.

Then we’d go on to sing the other verses that were Oh be careful little hands what do, Oh be careful little eyes what you see, Oh be careful little ears what you hear, and Oh be careful little feet where you go. When they do, His glory is seen by everyone. Does your life demonstrate that Jesus – the Word who became Flesh and dwelt among us –  is living in you?

Because Jesus lives in us, we should live in a Christ-like way. Our words, thoughts and behaviors should honor Him. When they do, His glory is seen by everyone. –click to tweet

1 Kings 12:8. Seeking Godly Advice

may 5 1 Kings 12 8 NKJV

Advice can be a wonderful thing — or it can lead to a disaster! Can you think of a time that someone older and wiser offered you some advice and your rejected it over the counsel of your friends? King Rehoboam did the same thing. He started off well in seeking the counsel of the elders who had been part of his father’s Solomon, advisors, but he didn’t like their advice. So, he went to his friends and sought their counsel. Let’s find out what happened as a result.

At the end of Chapter 11, Solomon has died. With the opening of Chapter 12, Rehoboam is at Schechem and Israel is going to make him king. However, the traditional elders needed to be satisfied first before they would crown him. So the whole assembly of Israel gathered and they said to Rehoboam: “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father and his heavy yoke, which he put on us, and we will serve you.” In this conversation, the Bible does not record exactly what “yoke” was so heavy for the people. However, if we go back to chapter 4, we find that Solomon had appointed 12 governors who were responsible for providing food for the royal household for one month out of the year. The regions these governors oversaw were not of equal size or wealth and therefore created an unfair burden to them. A large quantity of food was required for each area regardless of their size or ability. In Chapter 4, verse 22, we find the extreme requirements just for one day: it included an estimated 150 bushels of flour and 300 bushels of meal which would have fed more than 20,000 people. For meat, they were required to supply 10 fatted oxen and another 20 from the pastures, 100 sheep, plus deer, gazelles, roebuck, and fatted fowl. So this could be the “heavy yoke” the people were complaining about – or at least part of it.

Rehoboam, growing up in Solomon’s household, was more than likely used to the lavish lifestyle that Solomon had so he needed some time to think about their request. he told them to come back in three days. Rehoboam then consulted with the elders. Their advice was: “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, then they will be your servants forever.” I can almost see Rehoboam’s face – can you? In his mind he’s thinking, “me!? Their servants? But I will be king! I think not!” Now the Bible doesn’t say this is his reaction, but he doesn’t think too highly of the elder’s advice. So, he chooses to reject it and instead turns to the “young men who had grown up with him” and asked for their advice. These were most likely his friends. They probably also lived lavish lifestyles if they grew up close enough to be the prince’s friends. They probably didn’t want their easy life to end. Their advice to Rehoboam was to tell the people: “My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist! And now whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!” So who’s advice does Rehoboam listen to? We find in verse 13 that he favored the advice of his friends over the elders. As king of the nation, his decision would have an affect on every single person in the nation – and he chose to listen to the bad advice.

What was the result of Rehoboam’s decision? Verse 20 tells us that when Israel heard that Jeroboam had come back they sent for him and made him king over Israel and that only the tribe of Judah, along with remnants of the tribes of Simeon, Levi, and some of the northern people followed Rehoboam. His decision split the nation and as a result we see the beginning of recurrent boarder warfare between Israel and Judah. Just a few verses later in verse 28 we find that Jeroboam also seeks advice and the result of listening to that advice is that he makes two golden calves and claims: “Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!” He also made shrines on the high places and made priests from every class of people who were not the sons of Levi. Verse 30 tells us, “Now this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan.”

We may not rule an entire nation, but the decisions we make each day have an affect on the people around us – our spouse, children, friends, family, staff, co-workers. So we need to be sure our decisions have been bathed in prayer and that when we need advice we both listen and consider what is said. Does the advice align with God’s Word? Does the person offering advice have experience in the area they they are advising us? Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” While we can seek the advice of other Godly people who may have walked a similar path we are facing, ultimately we should turn to God when we need direction in our lives. Sometimes, God uses others to point us in the right direction. But Satan can also use others as a stumbling block to keep us off the path God has for us. He can use our Christian friends and family to give us well-intended advice, but it can still be wrong advice when measured up against God’s will for our lives. In Acts 21, Paul has to make a decision. The elders of the church urged him not to go to Jerusalem where bonds and affliction awaited him. However, the bonds and afflictions which awaited Paul at Jerusalem, along with his subsequent appeal to Caesar, were God’s means of proclaiming the gospel to “Gentiles and kings,” just as God had said in Acts 9:15. So when we are considering the advice of others, how should we know when to accept the advice and when to reject it?

First, you need to clearly define the decision you are trying to make. Once defined, it will be the compass that guides the rest of the decision making process. Write the exact decision down to refer back to as needed. Proverbs 18:13 tells us that if we give an answer before hearing, then nothing but folly and shame await us. You can’t gain an answer to your decision if you are not clear on what the decision actually is. Proverbs 18:17 says, “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.” If you have not clearly defined the decision you are trying to make, then when others speak up to offer their advice, you’ll have no solid ground to stand on and no real way to sort all the advice, which will just leave you more confused than ever. By clearly defining the decision, you’ll be better able to politely refuse advice that doesn’t answer your well defined decision.

Once you have defined the decision you need to make, seek the wisdom of God’s Word. This should be your first place to go for every decision you need to make – not friends, family – or even your pastor. They generally have good intentions, but if their advice doesn’t match God’s will for your life, then it is still wrong advice. Seeking God’s will isn’t always easy. It required much Bible study, prayer, seeking the council of Godly and trusted people. So, start with seeing what the Bible has to say. God’s will for you will never go against what the Bible teaches. So when others offer you advice, if it doesn’t line up with God’s Word, then you can be sure that advice is wrong advice and you can politely discard it.

As you are seeking wisdom from God’s Word, take time to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to know God’s will. Jeremiah 33:3 says: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” James 1:5 tell us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” So make sure you are including time alone with God, praying over the decision you must make.

Now that you are armed with Bible study and prayer, lay out all the choices you have in the decision you are making. From what the Holy Spirit has shown you, do any of your choices go against what He has shown you? If so, discard those. Now from the choices that are left, look at the ones that align with what you’ve read in God’s Word and what the Holy Spirit has been leading you toward as you pray. If there is still not one clear decision, then it’s time to seek some Godly wisdom and counsel. Seek out people who demonstrate a close relationship with God and understand the importance of being in God’s will. Also seek out people who are older than you and could have possible already walked the path you are on now. Someone who has yet to experience what you are going through will have less knowledge about the situation you are facing. Once God leads you to a person to seek advice from, tell them precisely what decision you need to make and the choices you have identified. They may help you see some things about the choices you have that you have not yet considered and that could narrow your choices down more. At the end of the day, there may or may not be only one right choice. Sometimes God gives us choices and either one of them could be acceptable to Him and both would lead to fulfilling God’s purpose for your life. When that seems to be the case, you simply just have to make a choice and then trust God with it.

When considering the advice of others, never do so without first taking time to study your Bible and pray about God’s will. Even when Listening to the advice of others, make sure you hold their advice up to the scrutiny of God’s Word and be sure that it does not go against any part of His teachings. Similarly, if someone is asking you for your advice, be slow to give it. Ask them for a few days to think on it and then follow the same steps of studying God’s Word and praying, asking the Holy Spirit to show you the very best advice that He would want you to share with the person who has asked for it. You can only avoid disastrous advice if you are earnestly seeking God’s plan and purpose for you. Ask Him to show you the advice you should reject and the advice you should accept.

Luke 24:32. Encountering the Living God

May 5 Luke 24 32

In Bible days, walking was one of the most basic modes of transportation. Today, we might drive or fly or perhaps even take a train, but we usually do something to pass the time. In a trip to Pigeon Forge a few months back, we were keeping track of each license plate to see if we could see one from every state. It’s also time to just talk and fellowship with those traveling with you. In Luke 24, we have two men on the Road to Emmaus and to pass the time on their journey, they were discussing all that had happened in Jerusalem. Perhaps one of the hardest walks to take, is one that leads away from a grave – and that what these two men were doing. Jesus had been crucified, died, and buried and now they were on their way to Emmaus. They probably were confused, sad, questioning, and grieving over the lost of Jesus – but this walk would be a life-changing walking. We don’t know much about these two mean, other than one of them is named Cleopas.

As Cleopas and his friend were walking, a third man walked up and joined them in their journey. It was Jesus, but the Bible tells us in verse 16 that Jesus kept them from recognizing who He was. As Jesus joins them, He asks what they are talking about. They probably were shocked that this newcomer hadn’t heard already. But as they tell what they knew, we can see that they really didn’t get why Jesus had to die. They, like many others, viewed the Messiah as someone that would overthrow the government and restore the nation of Israel to its former glory under King David.

Another thing we can assume is that Cleopas and his friend left Jerusalem before the news spread that Jesus was no longer dead and his disciples were saying He had be raised to life again. We can assume they didn’t know this news because if they had they would not have been walking AWAY from the tomb – but running TOWARDS it to see for themselves.

Knowing they didn’t get it, Jesus gives a slight rebuke saying, “You are such foolish, foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.” But its important to note that Jesus doesn’t shake his head, fed up with their lack of understanding and walk away. Instead begins to explain all the Old Testament prophecies that led up to his birth, life, dead, and resurrection.

The more Jesus taught the more curious they become – they wanted to know more. So they invited Jesus to stay for dinner and Jesus continued to teach them. Then in verses 30-32 Jesus turns the tables and He becomes the host. He reaches for the bread, blessed it and broke it and began serving them. It was in that moment as they watched what they had seen him do before, that they realized who he was. Jesus! He had been dead – but now He’s alive and they had been with him all day. Now they understood why they felt this burning within them while Jesus was with them and teaching them.

What is it like for you when your pastor preaches each Sunday? What is it like when you read the Bible? What is it like when you are sitting in your small group studying God’s Word? Are you bored and spend more time looking at your watch to see how much time is left then actually listening to what the Holy Spirit has to say to you? Do you read the Bible more as a check mark in the to-do box? Or does your heart burn within you to know Jesus more?

The thing about encountering the Living God, is He will always leave you wanting to know more, yearning for a little more time with Him. If that’s not what your Bible study and worship time is like, try getting alone with the Holy Spirit and ask Him what’s blocking the road in your spiritual journey.
