Heaven is Real – but so is Hell

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Does God send people to hell?

Hell is a real place. It’s made of stuff that is worse than your worst nightmare! 1 John 1:9 says, “God is love.” So if God is love, then why does He send people to Hell? The answer is he doesn’t. People choose Hell as their eternal destination when they reject God and His free gift of salvation through Jesus.

Hell was created for Satan

Hell was created for Satan who once was an archangel in Heaven, named Lucifer. Lucifer became jealous of God and decided he wanted to be God. As a result, he and one-third of the angels in heaven attempted a coup in Heaven. Only, they were defeated. God created hell for Lucifer and his followers. Lucifer is more commonly called the Devil or Satan. In the Bible he is also called the Great Deceiver. His followers are known as demons. God created Hell for Satan and his demons.

Wages of Sin

When man sinned way back in the Garden of Eden, a great divide was created between a holy and righteous God and sinful man. God created man to have fellowship with us. Yet, when man sinned, God’s holiness could not look on sin and God had to judge sin. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Wages are what you earn for a certain action. If you get up and go to work every day this week, the wages you earn will show up in your paycheck. The wages we earn for our sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Just as a child has consequences for disobeying his or her parents, so there are consequences when we disobey God. As a result, we are all spiritually dead in our sin until the moment that we accept Christ as our Savior.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth as a baby, lived among us, and then he paid our sin debt for us. Remember that our wages for sin is death – Christ died in our place. He was buried in a tomb for three days and then rose again. When we recognize our own brokenness and sin and that we are on our way to Hell as payment for our sin, we have the realization that we are a sinner. We then have a choice to remain lost in our sin or to come to Christ by faith in who he is and what he did for us and ask him to forgive us and cleans us of all our sin. (1 John 1:9). As we invite Him to be our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit moves in and dwells within us.

God knew we would sin

One of the most amazing concepts is that when God created man, He knew man would sin. He knew I would sin. He knew you would sin. God also knew that because of that sin, He would have to send His only begotten Son to this earth to pay our sin debt. Even knowing what it would cost Him, he created us anyway.

Yes, God is love. We know He is love because even when He knew from before the world was created that you and I would sin, He still created us and He still provided a way to restore fellowship with us and redeem us from our broken, sinfulness. He knew every sin of our entire lives. He knew that we would need someone to save us from those sins and so in his love and mercy, he sent his son to die a horrible, cruel death in our place so that we would not have to spend eternity in hell.

If God is love, why do people go to Hell?

Why then do people go to hell? Because they reject the free gift of Christ’s sacrifice and payment of our sin debt. They turn away from it. Revelation 21:8 says, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and the murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Sinners do not want to be confronted with their sin. They would rather create laws that will legalize sin than to confess their sin. They think if they can make a sin legal in the eyes of man they will not be guilty. However, no law of man would over over-rule God’s law and when we stand before God at the end of our lives he will judge us according to His laws – not man’s. At that time, he will either see you covered in the blood of Christ which cleanses you from all unrighteousness and you will spend eternity in Heaven with him or the sins of your entire life will be exposed and you will hear God say the worst words you could ever hear: “Depart from me for I never knew you.” My friend, God does not send people to hell. They send themselves.

Jesus told us more about Hell than Heaven

But Jesus actually talked more about Hell than Heaven. And to read how Jesus — and others in the Bible — described it, we don’t want to have any part of it, and we don’t want anyone we know to have any part in it.

So what does the Bible say about Hell?

  1. It’s a place of torment. Luke 13:28 says that in Hell, “You will cry and be in extreme pain” (GW). We get our visions of fire and agony in Hell from the Bible.
  2. It’s a place of complete separation from God and other people. That’s the worst part of Hell. Go through your whole life saying you don’t want to have anything to do with God, and you’ll eventually get your way. Hell means total separation from God. “If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be separated from God — lost forever!” (1 Corinthians 16:22a ERV)
  3. It’s a place without love. The Bible tells us that God is love. Without God, we’ll spend forever without his love in Hell. The Bible also says, “There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear” (GNT). What’s it like to live without God’s love? It means you’re scared to death all the time.

People who go to Hell, choose Hell

Everyone who goes to Hell chooses to do so. They’ll get what they always thought they wanted — a life away from God. You don’t want that! You don’t want Hell.

The Bible says that Hell is place for wicked souls; it is referred to as a fiery furnace, a place of unquenchable fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, constant and eternal torment; there will be no rest; and there is condemnation and destruction; you will be eternally separated from God; it is a place of outer darkness; it is a lake of burning sulfur; and there will be eternal suffering. Yet any description we give it, will not compare the just how horrible spending eternity in hell will be.

Choose Heaven instead of Hell

How do you not spend eternity in hell? By placing your faith and trust in the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. His death on the cross paid your sin debt. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” He died in your place so that you do not have to spend eternity in hell.

In 1974, a movie was made and shown in churches across the country. “The Burning Hell” is a 58 minute film created by the evangelist Estus Pirkle. This film is Pirkle’s interpretation of what the Bible has to say about hell and you can watch it on YouTube here.

What is Heaven like?

What is heaven like? A river, clear as crystal, will flow from the throne of God and of the Lamb [Jesus] down the middle of the city. On each side of the river there will be a tree of life, yielding twelve kinds of fruit every month. The streets will be pure gold, like transparent glass. The walls of the city will be adorned with every kind of jewel, emerald, onyx, amethyst, topaz, etc. There will be no need for a sun or moon, and no need for a temple or church. The presence of the Lord will be its light. There will be no sickness or pain, no death, no tears or sorrow.

Just as our human mind cannot accurately envision the horrors of hell, so can we not fully imagine the splendor and glory of heaven. Yes, my friend, God is love and He invites you right now to spend eternity in heaven with him.

Whosoever – that means you!

Romans 10:13 says, “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

“Whosoever” that means you!

If that is your heart’s desire, then you can pray the following prayer:

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. Today, I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

If you just prayed this prayer, please let us know through the contact us page. You will also want to find an evangelical church and talk with a pastor so that he can lead you through the next steps, being baptized, and growing as a Christian. If you just prayed that prayer, then welcome to the family of God! I look forward to meeting you in Heaven one day.

The choice is your – Heaven or Hell?

Heaven or hell….the choice is yours. Eternity in hell….or eternity in heaven. What do you choose?

Getting Ready to meet the Groom

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

A Bride Prepared

In the last few months, several people I know have had weddings: A staff, a former co-worker, and two nephews. As I read this verse about the wife making herself ready, I thought about all the months of planning the brides did to create their very special, magical moments for their wedding day. The bride chooses a dress, venue, flowers, cake, and caters. She chooses her maid of honor and bridesmaids. She chooses the music for the wedding service and the reception.

On the day of her wedding she sits for hours to get her hair done, carefully puts on her make up or hires someone to do it for this special day. She puts on her dress and veil. Slips on her shoes.  She takes the arm of her father or maybe an older brother or someone who has been a father-figure in her life and starts down the aisle towards her waiting groom to join her life with his.

No bride expecting a full traditional style wedding shows up without any preparations.

The Groom and the Bride

Throughout the Bible, Jesus is often referred to as the groom with His church being his bride. From the moment that Jesus ascended into heaven until the moment he returns for His bride, He has been making preparations to receive His bride. In John 14:2, as Jesus was assuring His disciples and telling them that He would be leaving them to return to His father he said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” He’s getting ready for His bride.

However, most brides and grooms choose a date and time for their wedding. But we, the Church and Bride of Christ, do not know when Jesus will come again. In fact, Jesus does not even know himself. He sits on the edge of his throne waiting for His Father to say, “Now is the time. Go get your Bride.” When that moments comes, what is commonly called the Rapture, the Bride of Christ – all Christians both dead and alive – will be gone from earth in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye (1 Corinthians 15:52). In that extremely brief period of time, we will be changed from earthly bodies to glorified bodies. Since we do not know the date or time of our Groom’s arrival, we should be constantly ready for Him.

The Groom never promised an easy life for His Bride

Persecution and tribulation

While planning for a wedding can be exciting, it is also busy and stressful. As the bride of Christ prepares for her groom, it’s important to remember that Jesus never promised an easy life. In fact, Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:12, “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” Jesus said in John 16:33, “In the world you will have tribulation.”

Chastisement

We can also expect times of chastisement (Hebrews 12:5-11). As Christians, God is our Heavenly Father and because of his great love for us, he will bring chastisement when we stray away from Him – not out of anger, but to bring us back to Him and restore us to fellowship with Him.

Wars, famines, pestilence and earthquakes

Jesus told us in Matthew 24:6-7, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.” And in Luke 21:11, Jesus said, “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”

Grief beyond comprehension

And sometimes, things happen in this world that we simply cannot understand. I remember the morning my sweet sister-in-law called us to say that our niece’s two-month old son died in his sleep. Our tiny nephew was born 5 weeks premature and he was a fighter. He spent 12 days in the hospital before coming home. But he was doing great. All was well. And then He slipped away – into the arms of Jesus. They buried his tiny body in a tiny casket and still grieve his loss today.

There is no way to understand such a loss. We live in a broken world. When God created the world, it was perfect. But with the sin of Adam and Eve, God’s perfect world became broken and sinful. As a result, death arrived on the scene. But the loss of one so tiny and young is beyond our comprehension.

The minister that spoke at Baby Ben’s funeral shared two scriptures: the first was Deuteronomy 29:29 where Moses said that the secret things belong to the Lord. We can’t understand why some things happen, but we must trust these things to God. The other scripture the minister shared was about the death of David and Bathsheba’s infant son. David said in 2 Samuel 12:23, “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.” Baby Ben’s family continues to greatly miss him, weep for him, and mourn his loss. We will not see him in this life again, but we know that at the appointed time we will go to him and be with him in eternity. Losing Baby Ben is not a “Goodbye”…it’s “I’ll see you later.”

Our Hope is in the Groom

We all know that life here on earth is not easy. But we have hope and peace when we place our faith in Jesus, believing in His free gift of eternal life. Every single one of us will experience death, unless we experience the rapture. But for the Bride of Christ, death is just the door that takes us to the Groom, the Lamb of God, our Redeemer and Savior.

We can know, without any doubt, that we will see Baby Ben later because of Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection that paid the price for our sins so that Jesus could offer us the free gift of eternal life. If we accept that gift by faith, then we become the bride of Christ and He is getting ready to bring His bride home.

Jesus told us in John 14:1-7, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.”

Our groom is getting ready and He is preparing a place for us!

Preparing for the marriage of the Lamb

What are we, the bride of Christ, doing to prepare for the marriage of the Lamb? Are we prepared to take our place beside Him? Have we yielded and surrendered to God so that we are ready when it is time? Are we walking by faith, obediently living for Him? Are we telling others about Him so that we bring them with us to the marriage feast? And are we daily reading His Word and developing a relationship with Him? We don’t often hear of arranged marriages anymore. Could you imagine marrying someone that you met once at the altar of a church but never saw again? We get to know the groom as we study God’s Word, attend church, worship with other believers, and through prayer. How well do you know the groom?

What are you doing to prepare for the marriage of the Lamb? The groom is coming!

We have an adversary and a Defender

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Our adversary proclaims our guilt before God

Satan is our adversary and he prowls the earth like a lion seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He uses lies to attack our mind and tries to make us ignorant of God’s will. As a Christian, he cannot defeat you because Jesus has already defeated him. But that does not mean that he will not try to deceive your mind or destroy your body. If we do not stand in our victorious position in Christ and refuse to utilize our spiritual armor God has given us, we will fall into sin. While Satan snickers in the background at his success and our defeat, he does not just leave us to suffer the consequences of our sin. He has one more trick up his sleeve to make the Christian doubly defeated.

Zechariah 3:1-7: A Scene from Heaven

In Zechariah 3:1-7, we are given a glimpse into heaven with a vision about Joshua the High Priest. These verses say:

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, with Satan

standing at his right side to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan: “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! May the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?”

Now Joshua was dressed with filthy clothes as he stood before the Angel. So the Angel of the Lord spoke to those standing before Him, “Take off his filthy clothes!” Then He said to him, “See, I have removed your guilt from you, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.”

Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head”. So a clean turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him in garments while the Angel of the Lord was standing nearby.

Then the Angel of the Lord charged Joshua:  “This is what the Lord of Hosts says: If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, you will both rule My house and take care of My courts; I will also grant you access among these who are standing here.

Holman Christian Standard Bible

The Bible Warns us to be aware of our adversary

Ephesians 6:11-12 says, “Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.” Paul wants us to know that we are in a spiritual battle. Our adversary is not flesh and blood, but rather rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm. Our adversary is Satan and his demons.

1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.” We have to take our adversary seriously – because he takes our destruction and downfall seriously. We must constantly be on the alert for his wiles and schemes. So we must put on the full armor of God and stand in His strength if we are to be aware of Satan’s attacks against us and defeat him.

Our adversary has a target

Satan does not just randomly attacks us. He is purposeful. He studies us and knows our weaknesses. In fact, he has been studying the human population since the Garden of Eden and he targets our heart and conscience. He’s not going to attack you in areas where you are not tempted or can easily say “no.” His attacks will come at your most weakest and vulnerable areas. He knows the doubts you have, the fears, the things that tempt you, what gives you stress and anxiety. He knows what is most important to you – your children, your possessions, your career. And he knows your addictions – food, hobbies, caffeine, alcohol, drugs. These are your weak spots and they are his target.

In God’s courtroom

In these verses in Zechariah 3, the setting is like a courtroom and God is the judge. The defendant is Joshua, the high priest and one of the leaders of the returned exiles (Haggai 1:1) and Satan is the prosecutor. Joshua appears in the courtroom wearing filthy garments soiled with excrement, which defiles him. This poses a serious problem for the people, since it was through Joshua the high priest that their own impurity was to be removed on the Day of Atonement (see Lev. 16:1-34). So, it appears that Satan has a very strong case against Joshua.

Zachariah had this vision at a time with the nation of Israel had sinned against God. They had returned to Israel after their captivity. After the Assyrians and Babylonian invasions and 70 years in exile, one would hope they would now follow God, but they did not. This explains why Joshua’s garments were filthy. Rather than following God, the Jewish men were divorcing their wives. Merchants were charging high interest rates and the priests were stealing from God.

Joshua accused by the adversary

Satan knew every single sin of the nation. Can you imagine his arguments before God as he presented all his evidence? “Your honor, have you considered your children in Israel? They are sinful and disobedient people. You chastened them in Babylon, hoping they would learn to obey you and walk in your ways. Then our of your goodness, you brought them back to this land and look! Here they are disobeying you again. You are a holy God and Israel is supposed to be a holy people. If you a re as holy as you claim you must judge them. If you do not, you are not who you claim. They are guilty!”

Satan’s pattern is always the same and James tells us how he works. James 1:14-15 says, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” Temptation begins in the mind when Satan drops the bait. He lures and entices us by using our own desires against us. Then we sniff out the bait of our desires and are instantly attracted to it. We nurture the desire, think about it, dwell on it. And when we yield to the temptation and act on the desire as we fall into sin. Sin brings the consequences of our choices: spiritual death and separation from God.

How do you think Joshua felt? He represented the people before God. Was he broken hearted or hard hearted? Repentant or prideful? What was his defense? Whenever we disobey God, Satan moves in for the kill. He attacks our heart and conscience. He says, “You are supposed to be a Christian, but you are not a very good one. How could God loved you after you did that?”

Our Adversary’s weapon is accusation before God

In the book of Job, we find a similar scene where Satan stands before God accusing Job. But Satan is a liar. Jesus says of him in John 8:44, “He was a murderer from the beginning and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of liars.” Revelations 12:9 calls him a deceiver: “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

So, there are some truths you can know about Satan: 1) When he talks to you about God, he lies. 2) When he talks about you to God, he sometimes tells the truth. 3) Satan is God’s great enemy, and therefore the enemy of Christians as well. Among several other names, Satan is known as the accuser. The book of Revelation tells us a bit more about Satan’s role as accuser: “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: ‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down’” (Revelation 12:10).

Our adversary is relentless in his accusations

Satan accuses God’s children continually. He hates God and all that God is, which means he also hates God’s mercy and forgiveness extended to sinful humanity. Satan the accuser stands before God in an attempt to somehow lessen God’s love or diminish God’s mercy. Fortunately, his accusations against us fall on deaf ears: “Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies” (Romans 8:33). Salvation belongs to the Lord, and His justification cannot be reversed. God is greater than our accuser.

For the time being, God has allowed Satan the accuser limited access to heaven, the very throne of God. There he reminds God of the condition of his saints – pointing out every flaw and sin. He stands before God saying “Do you see your servant [insert your name]. They have failed you again God. He/She has sinned again and you need to judge them.”

We must learn the different between the accusations of our adversary and God’s conviction

When we sin, the Holy Spirit’s job is to convict us through the word of God and He does in love with the intention of restoring your relationship and fellowship with the father. The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin (John 16:8). Yet many people read the Bible and are fully aware that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). They may know that “no immoral, impure or greedy person . . . has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God” (Ephesians 5:5). They may even agree that “the wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17). But, for all their knowledge, they continue to live in sin. They understand the consequences, but they’re far from being convicted of their sins.

The truth is, if we experience nothing more than a pang of conscience, anxiety at the thought of judgment, or an academic awareness of hell, then we have never truly known the conviction of sin. The word convict is a translation of the Greek word elencho, which means “to convince someone of the truth; to reprove; to accuse, refute, or cross-examine a witness”. The Holy Spirit acts as a prosecuting attorney who exposes evil, reproves evildoers, and convinces people that they need a Savior. To be convicted is to feel the sheer loathsomeness of sin. To be convicted is to experience an utter dreadfulness of sin. We are convicted when we become mindful of how much our sin dishonors God.

Holy Spirit or our adversary?

The Holy Spirit puts his finger on a specific sin I have committed, something concrete I can own and confess, but the accusations of Satan are vague and simply demoralizing.

The Holy Spirit shows me Christ, the mighty Friend of sinners, but the adversary wants me spiraling down into negative self-focus and results in negative self-talk.

God’s Holy Spirit leads me to a threshold of new life, but the Satan wants to paralyze me where I am.

The Holy Spirit brings peace of heart along with a new hatred of sin, so that I bow before Jesus in repentance and confession, but the devil offers peace of mind with smug relief, so that I fold my arms and say, “There, that’s over with.”

The Holy Spirit helps me to be so open to God that I allow him to control the conversation, but the devil tempts me to take off the table certain questions I just don’t want God to talk to me about.

We must learn between Satan’s accusations and God’s conviction. We may experience guilt and shame from our adversary or from the conviction of the Holy Spirit. But when it comes from the Holy Spirit, it will lead us to repentance. If it keeps us in a place of guilt and shame, making us feel defeated and unloved, it is from the adversary. When Satan accuses you, he uses your own sin in a hateful way and seeks to make you feel helpless and hopeless. Despair and spiritual paralysis result from listening to Satan’s accusation.

The purpose of the adversary is to bring an indictment before God

Satan’s purpose is to bring an indictment for your sin before God. He wants you to feel guilty and experience regret and remorse. But he does not want you to repent of sin. He will keep on accusing you so that you focus your attention on yourself and your sins rather than focusing on God’s grace and forgiveness. He knows that when you look to Jesus, you will repent and confess your sins and find cleansing and restoration. But as long as you are feeling guilty, you are under indictment and you are moving farther and father away from God. Excessive guilt and sorrow can only lead to depression, despair and defeat. Do not fall into Satan’s trap and believe in his lies. Turn to Jesus for cleansing and restoration.

Our defender

Thankfully, when Satan stands before God throwing out his accusations, we have a defender that speaks up for us: the interceding Son of God. In Zechariah’s vision, The Lord commands his servants to remove Joshua’s filthy garments. This removes Joshua’s sin. God also orders that Joshua be clothed in pure vestments, garments suitable to wear in the presence of the King of kings. These garments represent a new righteousness given to Joshua.

Then in verse 5, Zechariah also requests a clean turban for Joshua’s head, which symbolizes glory and royalty. Joshua’s re-clothing in the presence of the angel of the Lord shows God’s gracious acceptance of him and the people he represents. Can you imagine how Joshua feels now? Relief? Grateful? Thankful? At peace with God? Forgiven? Humble?

Whenever we experience God’s great forgiveness, there is joy in our hearts and the natural expression of gratitude should be a desire to live for him and obey him. In verse 7, God commands Joshua to walk in His ways and keep His charge. If he does so, he will also rule God’s house and have charge of God’s courts. As a result temple worship will not be corrupted by idolatry and God will not be silent or distant from his people any longer.

The King of kings stands at the right hand of God ready to defend you today. If you are carrying around the weight of unconfessed sin and living under the weight of the adversary’s accusations, loo to Jesus now and find cleansing and restoration. Do not live under the lies of Satan any longer!

Transformational Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie

Week 4 of Advent: Love

The World vs. God on what love is

Every day, we are challenged with the ways of this world conflicting with God’s ways. From the news media to prime time TV to even our friends – we have to choose. We even have to choose who we will call friend and how that applies to our lives. There is something special about the bond of love and fellowship between friends, yet even among friends there are disagreements at times and friendships can be broken. However, in John 15:13-15, Jesus tells us about the greatest love – a love that transforms us from the inside out and a love that can transform the world and the way the world thinks about love.

Hollywood would have us believe that love is about sex. Disney would have us believe that love is “happily ever after.” But Jesus tells us what true love is.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. — John 15:13-15

These verses is about transformational love. As children of God, we are no longer enemies of God. God doesn’t even call us servants. When we do what he tells us to do, he calls us friends. God desires to have a relationship with us and that is why we celebrate Christmas. It was for this reason that God sent his only Son into our world – so that the world would not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

God wants to have fellowship with us because of His great love for us

God, the creator of the world – and the creator of you – desires to have fellowship with you. The world “fellowship” can be defined as a friendly association, especially with people who share one’s interests. What interests do we share with God? Following his commandments. Jesus, who is God’s Son and our Savior. We fellowship with God when we read and study His Word and spend time in prayer. We fellowship with him when we obey his commandments. And when we listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we are fellowshipping with God. When we are attending church and worshipping God, we are fellowshipping with Him.

God’s fellowship with us came at a great cost

Because God loved you so much, He makes it clear that He wants to have fellowship with you, but that fellowship came at a cost: the life of his only Son, Jesus whose blood cleanses us from sin and transforms us from being enemies with God to children of God. This is what Jesus said in John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus was talking about himself. This great love cost God his Son and it cost Jesus His life.

But how great is our love for God? Does our love for Him cost us anything? Have we laid down our life in surrender to him? As we celebrate Christmas and the birth of our Savior, we need to remember the reason he was born in the first place – to lay down his life for us. Is there anything on this Christmas day that you have not laid down in surrender to him?

Because of God’s love, we have friendship with Him

Philips Criag and Dean sing the popular song, “I am a friend of God!” The lyrics are:

Who am I that You are mindful of me
That You hear me when I call
Is it true that You are thinking of me
How You love me it’s amazing!

I am a friend of God
I am a friend of God
He calls me friend

It can be hard to think that the Almighty God and creator of the universe calls me friend – but he does! And if you have asked Jesus to save you of your sins, you are his friend too! It is his desire to be your inner most friend – to transform you into his friend.

Where there is friendship, there is intimacy. Can you say there is intimacy between you and God? Psalm 51:t6 says, “Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.” The only way to have intimacy with God is by daily Bible study and prayer. You can not develop a relationship by just showing up on Sundays and spending an hour at church. Friendships take daily time and intentionality.

As we celebrate Christmas today, remember to take time to spend with Him – after all it is His birthday that we are celebrating and he longs to have friendship with you – a friendship that gives you freedom from the troubles of this world. A friendship that brings you closer to His Father as he transforms you to become more like Him.

Because of God’s love, we are renewed

Webster’s defines renewed as “Made new again; repaired; re-established; revived; renovated; regenerated.” To be renewed means that we change our mindset forever. When God created Adam and Eve, they were without sin until the moment in the Garden of Eden when Eve gave into the temptation. Every single person since that time has been born in sin. But when Jesus gave is life for us and we accepted His gift of salvation, he renewed us and re-established our relationship with God. Before, our sinful selves were conformed to this world. But as a child of God, He transforms as and renews our mind so that our focus is on doing the will of God.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” When God renews us, everything within us becomes focused on what He would have us to do and we step forward in his plan for us obediently, without delay.

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, came to give us peace

When we are lost in our sin we do not have peace with God. But Jesus left he glory and splendor of heaven to be born as a baby to a young teenage girl who was still a virgin. He took on human form and knew the hardships of life, the betrayal of Judas, experienced a tortuous death all became of his love for us. And because of that great love, we can experience fellowship and friendship with him and the renewal that transforms us into his likeness. This is the entire meaning that Christ came to give us peace. Jesus tells us in John 14:27, “ Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” But it is only in fellowship, friendship, and renewal that the peace of Jesus Christ centers within us and flows out of us.

This Christmas, can we seek to have more fellowship, friendship, and renewal in our lives as we focus on the great love of Jesus and what that love cost him?

Christmas Eve: Reflecting on God’s Love

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministrie
s

Week 4 of Advent: Love

Reflecting on God’s love

Christmas is, of course a time of joy and celebration of the birth of our Savior. When we celebrate birthdays with cake, balloons, streamers, games, and ice cream. It’s a party. Wouldn’t you find it odd if your friends threw you a birthday party and as you walked into the room all your friends and family whispered, “surprise!” And then they spent the next 30 minutes singing soft songs about your life and quietly, reverently, and respectfully discussed your good qualities? However, if you attend a Christmas Eve service at your church, you will likely spend the evening holding a lit candle, singing some Christmas carols and your pastor will have a message that reflects on the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of our Savior.

It is good to take time to reflect on the love of God that made a way through the birth of Jesus for us to have the gift of salvation. We need to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of shopping, cooking, wrapping gifts, attending concerts and parties and just be still and quiet. But it seems odd to celebrate a birthday in such a way.

Love often doesn’t make sense

If we think about it, love often doesn’t make sense. We see this in the very reason that Jesus was born.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

God knew what was going to happen to His Son. God knows how evil and perverted this world is. He didn’t create the world this way. Our sinful nature takes everything God made and perverts it. As a mother, it can be hard to understand how God would allow Jesus to endure the cross. It’s the most well known statement in the world, but, as a parent, it is difficult to process. How could God do that to his own Son? I wouldn’t willingly put my kids in a dangerous place and let thugs beat the crap out of them and kill them. No sane parent would do that. On the surface this doesn’t make sense.

Love is foolish to those headed for destruction

But God explains Himself throughout the Bible for why He sent Jesus to us. Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the vey power of God.” For those who do not believe in Jesus this is all foolish and silly. Love does not make sense to those who do not know and understand the perfect love of God. 1 John 1:9 says, “God is love.” So for those of us who know Love (God), it is not silly and foolish. It is power. Power over sin, death, and hell. It is power of Satan and this world. Why? Paul tell us in Romans 8, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus form the dead, lives in you.”

So, Jesus coming into the world as God in the flesh may seem foolish to the disbeliever, but to me, He is the power that drives my life.

Love is always sacrificial

John 3:16 teaches us a second thing about love. It is always sacrificial.

Just because I obey the law does not mean I love the law. I obey the law because it honors God and I would prefer to not face the consequences of breaking the law. Many Christians misunderstand this concept in their Spiritual life. They think if they tithe a few dollars, go to church when they can, get baptized, and sign up a few times a year on the volunteer list then they are OK with God. But that’s not love. It isn’t sacrifice.

God love the world so much that he gave his one and only Son. God is love. He shows us what love is. Love is sacrifice. Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to you life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

Love is sacrifice. A genuine follower of Jesus does not decide what part of their life to give to God, they give their all. We all make mistakes. We all sin. Not a single person is perfect, so it is a struggle. I can claim to love God, but, love isn’t defined by what I say, or even what I do. I can do religious stuff and not sacrifice a thing. Love is sacrifice. This is the message Jesus teaches.

Have I sold out my life for Jesus?

It is easy to accept things the way they are and maintain a status quo. Most of us have problems with change. So, We do church the way we always do it and we get stuck in a rut in our relationship with Jesus because we do not take the time to intentionally invest in our relationship with Him by identifying the areas of spiritual growth that need attention. We allow the kids, careers, hobbies, and relationships become more important.

The sad result is that we do not have the intimate relationship with Jesus that He longs to have with us. Getting stuck in a rut isn’t love. Love is sacrifice. A great place to start evaluating your relationship with God is to reflect on the question: “Have I sold out my life for Jesus?” And what better time to reflect on this question than on Christmas Eve as we reflect on His birth. God simply gave you His Son because He loves you. But we cannot assume for a moment that God will allow us to abuse His great sacrifice by living the same way we’ve always lived. Love is sacrifice. Jesus demands your life in exchange for His. But when we think about that, it isn’t even a bargain. It’s a rip off for Him because while we take on his righteousness, he took on our sins as He bore them on the cross.

A Christmas Revolution Challenge

So this Christmas Eve, as you pause the celebration of Christ’s birth, I want to challenge you to ask the Holy Spirit what you are sacrificing. As a part of our human nature we have a tendency to slip into the comfortable and the routine. There is not sacrifice in the routine. There is no sacrifice in comfort. It is spiritually necessary for us to contemplate our journey with God and ask on simple question with huge implications: “Have I sold out my life for Jesus?” I want to challenge you to not set a resolution to sell out to Jesus – but instead have a revolution. There is no turning back in a revolution. A resolution is simply a stated desire or opinion. A revolution, however, is a change in thinking and a complete replacement of what you are. Revolutions take a crowd and if we have a spiritual revolution, we would see the revival our world so desperately needs.

Give Jesus your life. Everything you are. Everything you own. Ask God to use it all for His purpose and for His glory. Have you sold out your life for Jesus? What do you need to sacrifice today?
