John 14:6. One Way

Jun 04 John 14 6

I do a lot of driving. I enjoy traveling and seeing new places and meeting new people, hearing their stories, praying with them, encouraging them, and helping them find another nugget of truth from God’s Word that brings them to a closer relationship with Jesus. But, the one thing I hate about traveling is one way streets. I can still remember going the wrong way down a one way street in downtown of my home town (Since mom reads every post – it was at least 25 years ago, mom!). But that one experience left me with a very strong dislike of one way streets. Thankfully, its was a one-time experience for me and I was able to get myself out of it without causing a wreck. As any driver knows, going the wrong way on a one-way street can certainly bring death or injury – not just to yourself, but to those around you.

Jesus says that He is the way, the truth and the life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him.  Because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins through His sacrificial death on a cross and His resurrection from the dead, He alone is the only one able to provide access to God and this alone makes Him the one-way road to God. Not only is Jesus the only way, He is also the truth. Because God has no beginning and no end, all truth originates in Him. He is the source of all truth and Jesus is the embodiment of all truth. As such, he is the reference point for us to evaluate any claims to the truth. As a result, any contrary claims are false. In John 17:17, Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” Because God’s Word is truth, it becomes our reference point for evaluating all claims to the truth. For some, truth is represented by facts, but it is much more than that. Facts can be changed as more evidence comes to light, but we can never change the truth. However, the truth does change us. As Jesus, who is the truth, enters our lives, we are changed. Jesus didn’t just teach the truth or demonstrate the truth. He said that He is the truth. As God’s children, we are to walk in the truth (3 John 1:3), love the truth and believe the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12), and we are to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:32).

Because God has no beginning and no end, all truth originates in Him. He is the source of all truth and Jesus is the embodiment of all truth. As such, he is the reference point for us to evaluate any claims to the truth.  –click to tweet

So, Jesus is the only way and He is the truth. He is also life. John 5:26 says, “For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself.” Because He is life, He is able to confer eternal life on all those who believe in Him. And that life is found only one way: by believing in the Truth.

Because Jesus is life, He is able to confer eternal life on all those who believe in Him. And that life is found only one way: by believing in the Truth. — click to tweet

Going the right way on the one-way street to God brings life, but going the wrong way brings death, just a certainly as going the wrong way on a one-way street while driving. The wrong way to God is any other way than through Jesus. Depending on good works to get you to heaven is the wrong way. Depending on church membership is the wrong way. Buddha, Confucius equals wrong way. Buying your way to heaven through giving money to the church is the wrong way. Depending your parent’s salvation is the wrong way. Depending on Mary, the mother of Jesus to get you there is the wrong way. Jesus is the one-way street to heaven and belief in the Truth of who He is, is the only way to eternal life. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life – no one comes to the Father except through Him.
