Do you know what God is doing?

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

What is God doing?

With all that going on in our would today, you might be wondering where God is and asking, “What is God doing?” Maybe you’ve found yourself asking if God is even paying attention to what’s happening down here on earth. Whenever life gets difficult, it’s easy to think of God as way off in heaven and not in tune with the happenings down here on planet earth. However, God is exactly aware and He is at work – even if you can’t see it.

The Message Bible says in Proverbs 29:18 that when we can’t see what God is doing we stumble all over ourselves. The HCSB says “Without revelation people run wild.” Doesn’t that sound like our world today – people running wild and stumbling all over themselves? Could it be that we’ve lost sight of God and what He is doing? Maybe some have even given up on God – stopped going to church, stopped praying, and stopped reading their Bible.

Seeing God at work

It’s funny that the things we stop doing when we feel like God isn’t at work in out lives are the very things we need to do if we are going to see where God is at work. Our spiritual connection to God comes from going to church, fellowshipping with other believers, spending time in His Word, praying, and listening for what God has to say to us. But when we face trials, we sever our connection and blame God for what is happening in our lives.

You may know someone who seems to be very “connected” to God and they can tell you exactly what God’s purpose is for them and the direction they should take in life. You might know someone who has experienced answered prayers that shows them God is at work in their life. Others might be able to tell you about a miracle God has done in their life.

We need to remember that only Moses received a talking, burning bush. Only Noah was given a building plan with the exact dimension and building materials. Only Paul had a blinding encounter with Jesus. However, over and over again in the Bible we see where God let people in on His plans. Most of us have no specific point in time where God stepped out of heaven with exact directions for what we are to do, but if we look carefully we can see God at work in our lives. He is always working in ways we can’t see and even if we don’t recognize it in the moment, when we look back at our lives we can see His fingerprints all over our lives as He guides and directs our steps.

Tracing the fingerprints of God in our lives

God works in our lives through the church

One of the ways we can see God at work in our lives is through the church. God places the leadership of our churches where He wants them to be. So the leadership in your church is there – for you. As long as they are solid in their theology, listen to the advice you receive them your brothers and sisters in Christ and your church leaders. Have you ever thought about your pastor being the voice of God – or do you just criticize every sermon? Are you more concerned with if your spouse heard what the pastor is saying or do you apply it to your own life?

If you feel like you don’t see God at work, when was the last time you went to church? Do you go anticipating hearing God speak to you or is it more of a social hour? If you want to hear God speak, you have to listen. Start by spending some time in prayer before you go to church and ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you as you worship.

Dr. Jerry

For me, I think about a pastor – Dr. Jerry. When I started attending the church where he was pastor, I was hired as the pianist for the church. However, I believe that God planted and sent me to that specific church because it was where Dr. Jerry was pastor and God would work in my life through sermons Dr. Jerry preached. Through him, God would heal some very deep hurts and it was through Dr. Jerry that God would answer two of my greatest prayers at that time.

I doubt Dr. Jerry even knows exactly how God used him in my life. But God had a plan for me and that included God working through Dr. Jerry to accomplish God’s work in my life at that time. In fact, the very first glimpse of this ministry came through a sermon Dr. Jerry preached even though it would be years later before that glimpse became anything more than a thought in my head.

God works in our lives through other people

One of the ways we can see God at work in our lives is through other people. Throughout our lives, people come and go. We forge close relationships and then God moves them to a new location or we simply lose touch after a time. But have you thought about God placing them in your life for a season and for a purpose?

God often works through others to meet our needs. Sometimes He places people in our lives right in the moment we need them. Other times He places them in our lives months or even years in advance so that when we hit that trial or difficulty, that person is there to encourage us, pray for us, and be the hands and feet of God. Who are some of the people in your life that was there at just the right moment when you needed them?

My “just in time” experience

I recall a time when I was in college and driving home from West Palm Beach and the car I was driving had a mechanical problem (it was just a slight problem – like, it slung a rod – in other words, it was dead). The car problem started about two hours away from home. I heard a clunk and noticed the rpms dropped so I got off the exit and called my dad from a pay phone (this was the days before cell phones). Still two hours away, he told me to get it as close to home as we could. I made it not quite to the next exit.

The other driver at just the right time to help

Several times we had passed a car from West Palm and then later that car would pass us. Because I had gotten off at the first exit, that car caught up with us again and when it saw us pull over, the driver pulled up behind us and offered to get us to the next exit where I could call my dad – again.

The just in time tow truck driver

At that time the only two places at that exit was a Waffle House and a gas station. I found another pay phone and called home. My dad wanted to get the car off the side of the expressway and said he would call a tow truck. Just as he said those words a tow truck pulled up on the other side of the pay phones and was getting out to make a call on another pay phone. So I said, “Daddy, a tow truck just pulled up.” I asked the driver to talk to my dad and they worked out an arrangement where he would tow the truck to the gas station where the owner was a friend of his and dad could pay the towing fee when he arrived.

I had to wait two hours for my dad to get there – but remember there was a Waffle House, so we went in and enjoyed hot chocolate while we waited.

God is never caught by surprise

You see God already knew that I would have car trouble that day and while I was not happy about being stranded two hours away from home, my dad helped me to see how God orchestrated events so that I was at the right exit, put a kind person from West Palm Beach on the road with us and just because He is a good God, He made sure a tow truck pulled up at the exact time he was needed. That is how God uses others in our lives.

God works in our lives through Bible Study and prayer

Often, I am asked just how important Bible study and prayer is. It is vitally important. Bible study and prayer is to your spiritual life like oxygen and blood is to your physical life. Without oxygen and blood – you die. Without prayer and Bible study, you do not grow as Christian. If you want to walk with God, you have to be in His Word and you have to pray. But if you do all the talking when you pray, then you can expect to not hear anything from God. If you want to hear from Him, then you have “Be still” and listen. As you do, the Holy Spirit will recall a verse to your memory or something you read from God’s Word will speak to the exact need you are praying about.

God works in our lives through the challenges we face

What if we looked at the difficulties in our lives as God at work around us? Would our perspective on our problems change? When our perspective if “me focused” all I see is the problem. But if I change my perspective to say, “Where is God at work in this?” then what I see is God.

Maybe God is teaching you to trust Him more. Maybe He is testing your faithfulness to Him. Or perhaps He is trying to get your attention to change a behavior that is not pleasing to Him. Perhaps all the stress and anxiety you feel is rooted and grounded in sin that you refuse to give up, confess, and repent from. Try seeking for God in your trials and asking Him what He wants you to learn from the trail you are facing. You can also ask Him to give you strength, peace, and comfort during the trial.

When we know God’s plans

In Proverbs 29:18, The Message Bible says, “But when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.” The HCSB says, “one who listens to instruction will be happy.” There is nothing more exciting than to know where God is work and to realize that He invites us into His plans and to be an active part of them. I like that The Messages uses the word “attend.” When we “attend” to something it means we are present and deal with it. It isn’t enough to just hear God’s plan – we have to attend to our part in those plans. In other words, when God calls us up to “active duty” we go serve and do what He tells us to do.

Can you think of a time when God let you in on His plans and He asked you to join Him? What was your answer? Did you obediently jump in? Or did you offer excuses and promise to do it later – but never did? Did you tell God all the reasons why you’re not qualified? Did you say yes, but then listened to others who talked you out of it and didn’t follow through? If you want God to let you in on what He is doing, then you need an obedient heart that will follow Him in what He tells you to do. If you’re not going to bother to listen and do what He says, why should He let you in on His plans?

Stumbling or blessed

How would you describe your life right now? If you feel as if you are “stumbling all over yourself,” then how in tuned with God are you? Can you see God at work? If you do, then are you attending to what He reveals to you? We are happy and blessed when we are walking in step with Him, knowing His will and plans, and obediently doing what He calls us to do.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. What are you asking God to give you?

One night, there were three sailors whose ship took on water and sunk. They made their way in a raft to a small atoll. One was an Englishman, the second was an Italian and the third was German. They had eaten all the coconuts and were slowly starving to death. One evening, a bottle came floating up on the beach. They were almost too weak to go down to get it, but they drew sticks and the Italian had to fetch the bottle. When he brought it back, they pulled the cork out of the bottle, and a genie came out and granted each of them one wish. Naturally they wanted to go home, so they began asking the genie to grant their requests.

The Italian said, “I wish I was back in Rome drinking coffee at a sidewalk cafe on the Via Venato, just watching the people pass by.” Immediately, he was back in Rome drinking his coffee.

The Englishman spoke next. “I wish I were back in London eating fish and chips in Piccadilly Square.” Immediately there he was, back in London.

The third then said, “I am so lonely without my two friends I wish they were back here to keep me company.”

God is not a genie in a bottle

How often in prayer do we treat God like a genie in a bottle? When we get in a desperate situation we grab our “prayer bottle” and pull out the cork, expecting God to come wafting out and say “What’s your wish?” And then we expect Him to grant it. Or when there is something we really want that isn’t possible in our humble means to obtain – we run to the dusty self and grab that “prayer bottle” and eagerly yank the cork out.

If God were to ask you, “What shall I give you?” what would you ask for? Take a moment and think about it. Got your answer? Ok…then keep reading.

What we ask God for is an indicator of our spiritual maturity

What we ask God for shows a lot about where we are spiritually. If you were thinking of things of this world, like big bank accounts, ocean front mansions, and fancy cars, then it reveals that your values are both materialistic and selfish.

However, if your wish was to be more like Jesus, or to have a more consistent prayer life, or to be a better witness for Christ, then your values lie in things that are eternal and enduring.

Click to tweet

The problem with treating God like a trapped genie in a bottle is that we make Him our servant rather than us being His.

The simple truth is, our prayers usually are a reflection of where our true values lie. We pray for those things that are most important to us. God doesn’t have to give us anything we ask for. Yet, out of His love for us, He does grant us our requests when they align with His will.

In John 14:13, Jesus said, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” In John 16:24, He said, “Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” However, these verses do not mean we can pray, “God, in the name of Jesus, give me a Lamborghini in bright red,” and POOF! there it is. There are two other important things about prayer that we must consider: 1) praying in the will of God and 2) praying for the wrong kind of things.

Asking in the will of God.

1 John 5:14-15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” If we’re going to pray God’s will, then we have to start with knowing what His will is. That means you’ve already spent time praying, studying God’s Word, and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what God’s will is. Let’s see what the Bible says about God’s will.

God’s will is sovereign.

God chooses and orders all that has and ever will take place.

In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will. Ephesians 1:11

In Acts 4, we find that by God’s sovereign will Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and even the people of Israel, had Jesus crucified. In verse 28, we read: “to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.”

God has a moral will.

God has given us His standard for right and wrong based upon his own holy and righteous character.

In Exodus 20:1-17, God gives Moses what we call “The Ten Commandments.” These ten laws are God’s moral standards for what is right and wrong – and they are just as true today as they were the day God wrote them on tablets of stone with His own finger and handed them to Moses. We can’t change God’s laws by amending ours. When we stand before God in the final judgement, God won’t determine how well we lived according to our laws – but by His.

God has a permissive will.

Because sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, God currently allows certain things to take place in this world that he would not allow in a sinless world.

We find in Acts 14:16 that God allowed previous generations to “walk in their own way.” In other words, He allowed them to live the way they wanted. But when we are determined to live our own way there are two things to be aware of:

God eventually will say, “Enough is enough!” We see this in Sodom and Gomorrah, in Noah and the flood, and when He sent Israel and Judah into exile.

We might think we’re living our way, but God will still obtain his ultimate purposes. Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel all thought they were putting Jesus to death and in doing so would stop others from believing in Him. But Jesus going to the cross was exactly what God had planned so that you and I could be saved from our sins. So you can persist in having your own way – and sometimes God will allow it – but God will still achieve His purposes and we can be sure that if our will is not aligned to His will then those things we persisted on having our way will usually end up causing us grief in the long run until we humbly submit ourselves to God and return to His will.

Asking for the Wrong Kinds of Things

James wrote, “You ask and receive not because you are asking for the wrong kind of things. You are asking for things that you might consume on your own lusts” (James 4:3). We have a good Father, who desires to give us good things. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus said, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” James wrote: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17).

So unless God, in his permissive will, allows us to have things that are not in His will, then we can know that when we pray for things that God does not give us, then we are praying for the wrong kinds of things. I wonder how many times we are asking for things that would only pander to our lusts?

What did Solomon ask for?

Not long after Solomon takes the throne as king of Israel, God appears to Solomon and says: “Ask! What shall I give you?” Solomon didn’t ask for good health, long life, riches, or fame. He didn’t ask God to wipe out his enemies or seek revenge for a wrong done? Solomon could have asked for anything. In fact, his father, David, had recently died. He could have asked God to bring David back to life. However, he asked for nothing from a selfish perspective.

Perhaps now that he sat on the throne, the weight of the responsibility of being king to God’s chosen people weighed on him. Solomon asked for nothing for himself except for God’s wisdom in leading and guiding God’s people. His requests marks a cultural change from a strong military nation to one of peaceful values. Solomon asked God to give him the ability to discern good and evil and to make him a ruler with a wise and obedient heart.

Solomon’s request granted

God was pleased with Solomon’s request and granted what he asked for. Verses 10-12 says, “The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked for riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.”

But God didn’t stop there. In verse 13, God continues and says, “And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days.” Still God didn’t stop, but His final gift to Solomon had a condition placed on it. In verse 14, God says, “So if you walk in My ways, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”

God delights in giving us wisdom

We can know that God delights to give us wisdom when we truly seek it. Proverbs 2:6-8 says: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.” And in James 1:5 we find, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” So if you are struggling with knowing what you should do, ask God to give you wisdom.

Just how wise was Solomon?

So just how wise was Solomon? 1 Kings 4:29-34 describes Solomon this way: “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all other men, wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol, and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. He also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005. And people of all nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.”

What a parent prays for their children matter

Maybe your thinking, “where did Solomon get the wisdom to ask for wisdom?” If we look back to his father’s charge to Solomon in 1 Chronicles 22, we find David saying in verse 12, “Only the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God.” We find a father who’s last recorded prayer for his son was that God would give him wisdom and understanding. As parents, the things we pray over our children matter!

Why was Solomon’s request pleasing to God?

Solomon acknowledged God’s sovereign will. He said, “Lord, you have made me the ruler over your people. Grant me the wisdom and knowledge to do the right thing as I reign over them.” There was no puffed-up pride saying “I put me on this throne.” He knew he was king because God chose him to be king. He recognized that God had made him ruler over His people.

Solomon wasn’t the first born son of David. The first born was killed when he tried to take the throne away from David. Then, at David’s death, we find an older half-brother of Solomon’s tries to set himself up as king. Solomon’s mother, Bathsheeba, has to intervene and remind David that he had promised her Solomon would be the next king. David made this promise because in 1 Chronicles 22:6-10, we find that God told David that He has chosen Solomon to rule after David.

Solomon acknowledged that the task to which God had called him was bigger than he could fulfill. When the task God is calling us to do is bigger than our own capabilities, we need to ask God for His divine help. God-sized tasks require divine assistance. They are not meant for us to handle on our own. Rather, they are designed for God to work in us and through us as we humbly submit to His sovereign will.

What can we learn from Solomon?

Solomon’s request was in line with the purposes of God

Solomon’s request was in total harmony with the purposes of God. A sure way of getting your prayers answered is to discover the will of God and make that your prayer. We know that God’s will is that no one would die lost in their sins. So if you have not yet asked God to forgive your sins, start there.

We also know that God has a purpose for each one us. If you don’t yet know what His purpose is for you, ask Him to reveal it to you. Then, when you know His will for you, ask Him for the necessary ability to accomplish those thing that He wants you to do.

Don’t allow what God accomplishes through you to go to your head

As God works in you and through your to accomplish His will, don’t let it go to your head. Solomon started out well in asking for wisdom. But eventually, we see that through the many wives and concubines he had, they each brought with them their own “gods” and eventually, Solomon began to worship the gods of his wives. Pride begins to set in heart for the wealth and prosperity he had amassed. So be sure that as you accomplish God’s will that all the praise, glory, and honor belongs to God.

We are here to serve God – not so He can serve us

Before you begin asking God for the desires of your heart, remember we are here to serve Him – not so He can serve us. We have the privilege and joy to be an instrument through which He does His work. As God accomplishes His will in our lives, others will see the mighty things He does. We can then either let them believe we did it ourselves, or we can acknowledge that we do all things through Christ who gives us strength. Will you allow the world to think you’re a “self-made” person or will you point them to God who is working in you to accomplish His perfect plan?

God hears your prayers (Jeremiah 33:3)

by Julia Bruce
CEO, Author, and Conference Speaker

Does God hear your prayers?

Do you ever wonder if God hears your prayers? 1 John 5:14 says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” Our confidence comes from asking according to God’s will. We understand and know His will as we develop an intimate relationship with Him through Bible study, Worship, and prayer. If something is in God’s will, then we can know that God will both hear and answer that prayer.

David had doubts, too

If you’ve ever had doubts (we all have at one time or another) about God hearing our prayers, then you can know that you’re not alone. David, whom God referred to as “a man after my own heart” also had doubts. Listen to him calling out to God in Psalm 22:1-2, which says, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.” Chances are you’ve been in this exact same spot. So here are five verses to help you during these times to bring you back to the promises that God does hear us.

Five Verses that Reassure Us God Hears Our Prayers

1. John 9:31 – “We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.”

2. 1 Peter 3:12 – “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

3. 1 John 5:15 – “And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

4. Jeremiah 29:12-13; “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

5. Psalm 66:17-20 – “I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened; but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer. Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!”

God Invites Us to Call Out To Him

Not only does he hear them, but He invites us to call out to Him. He is sitting there, just waiting to speak with you today. Longing to hear from you. And when you call out to Him, He will answer, but not with just a simple yes, no, or maybe…. Jeremiah 33:3 tells us that God wants to tell you great and incomprehensible things.

How exciting would our prayer lives be if we sat in silence, listening to God telling us great and incomprehensible things…things we don’t know? What dream would He plant in our heart? How might He call us to serve Him? What new and fresh Word might we get out of the Bible if we sat still long enough to hear Him speak? How might the Holy Spirit direct us to intercede and pray for someone God lays on our heart? What work might God do in your life that would allow you to let go of anger and bitterness and give you the grace to forgive that person that hurt you? Call out Him…He will answer. Sit expectantly waiting for Him to show Himself to you.

Luke 11:1. Teach Us To Pray

Luke 11 1

Most Christians struggle with their prayer life. For some, prayer is a crisis hotline…kinda like the Batphone. We pick it up and dial God’s 911 when we’re in trouble or need something from him. Others struggle finding the right “formula” to prayer so their prayers will get pushed to the front of the line for God’s holy consideration. Some feel like the key to getting their prayers answered is to only used the big reverent words in their prayer. Some feel like prayer is nothing more than a chore that’s required to do because you’re a Christian. Many struggle with praying out loud in a group of people. Do we kneel? Do we have to close our eyes? Sometimes we get so hung up on the “how to” that we forget that prayer is just a conversation with the God who created us and loves us.

How to pray isn’t our only struggle. If you’ve committed yourself to prayer, then you know that prayer can be hard work. We come to our prayer time, with our prayer lists and our carefully written out promises from the Bible next to each prayer and it doesn’t take long before we drift off to sleep or our mind begins to wonder. Then there is the part about waiting for God’s timing and trying to discern His will.

If prayer is something you feel inadequate in, you’re not alone. It’s very interesting that Jesus’ disciples worked alongside of Jesus and they only asked Him to teach them one thing. They didn’t ask for a crash course in feeding a large crowd with a boy’s small lunch. They didn’t sign up for Casting out Demons 101. They didn’t ask Jesus to teach them how to heal the sick. The only time we see them asking Jesus something was, “Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1).

Do you ever stop to think what it must have been like to hear Jesus pray and then see miracles occur. The disciples wanted the same results in their prayers that Jesus got from His. Most of us would like to get results like Jesus did too. He loves for us to come to Him and ask Him to teach us something we are struggling with:

 • Father, teach me to love you more.
 • Father, teach me to praise you more.
 • Father, teach me to thank you more.
 • Father, teach me how to lead others to you.
 • Father, teach me how to know your will.
 • Father, teach me how to pray.
 • Father, teach me to trust you.

Jesus answered the disciples with a model for prayer. Probably one you’ve quoted (or at least heard) more than once in your life.

Our Father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, they will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory
Forever, Amen.

The beginning of the model starts off with praise and adoration to a Holy God, acknowledging Him our heavenly father and giving reverence to His name. Often, our prayers tick off the long list of things we need God to for us without ever just stopping and taking the time to pause and worship Him for who He is: A God who is worthy of our praises. A God who is omnipotent, creator, holy, just, powerful, excellent in all His ways, good, faithful, true. A God who’s mercies are new every morning and who’s love is unfailing. A God who relentlessly pursues us, even in the times when we want nothing to do with Him. He is righteous. Our rock of ages. He is our teacher. He keeps His promises. He is our Savior and our Shepherd. He is a strong tower to which we can run for comfort and protection. He is Jehovah. He is our helper and our healer and He is victorious. How can we not give Him praise that is due Him? We take Him for granted and treat Him more like a genie in a bottle that we rub and He pops out to grant us our wishes. And when we don’t get an answer on our time table, we declare that prayer doesn’t work for us and we….quit praying.

When we don’t get an answer to prayer, it might be that we do just need to wait for God’s perfect timing. Or it might be that we didn’t pray for His will and He has something better in mind than what we think we want. Maybe His “no” is because even though we think we know what we need, God sees so much more than we do and He knows that what we’re asking Him for is not for our good. Instead of getting upset, trust Him for His perfect timing, His perfect answer, and His perfect will. Because we know He will do nothing that will bring us harm, we can love Him even when we don’t understand His answer or feel that He is not answering. We can trust Him that He is working all things out for our good, as any loving Father would do.

Try beginning your prayer time with worshiping God before you start on that long list of prayer requests. It will change the way you see prayer.

Next, take time to earnestly seek God’s will regarding the things you are praying about. 1 John 5:14-15 says, “Now this is the confidence we have before Him: Whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked Him for.” We can’t know what God’s will is, if we do not take time to ask Him…so ask Him. Search His Word to determine His will. Ask a few close, trusted, Christian friends to pray with you to discover God’s will. He will let you know it.

Once you know His will, then you can take those promises from the Bible and begin to pray them back to Him. When you know His will, you can pray with confidence. When you know His will, you can move forward, even if it isn’t His will. There is something about seeking His will that if His will is different than ours, our will changes to match His as we begin to pray with a heart that truly wants His will.

Our prayer time also needs to include a time of confessing our sins to God and asking Him to forgive us. We also need to let go of the wrongs that people have done to us. How can we so righteously hold grudges against others when the King of Kings has lovingly forgiven us?

We can then pray for God’s protection over us as we go through the day and for his guidance. We can ask that Satan would not have any foothold into our lives. As we do, we can “put on the armor of God.” I like to do a visualization in my mind with each piece of armor as I pray. For example, “Lord, will put my helmet of salvation on my head, protecting my mind from thoughts and temptations that Satan may send my way.” I go through each piece of armor, acknowledge what it’s purpose is and ask God to put it on me.

Lastly, Jesus’ model prayer acknowledges the power and glory of God. He has the power to heal. He has the power to meet that financial need. He has the power to restore broken relationships. He has the power to bring a rebellious child back to Him. He has the power to help overcome an addiction. He has the power to help us get that job. He has the power to give us the strength to get through another day of an aging parent struggling with Alzheimer’s or cancer. He has the power to make that dream a reality. He has the power to enable you to do that impossible task He’s asked you to do. And when his power shows up, He is the one who will receive the glory.

There really is no “magic” method to prayer. When it comes down to it, prayer is nothing more than you communicating with a God who loves you. Just tell Him what’s on your heart, just as if you were talking with your best friend. He already knows anyway, so don’t worry about how eloquent your prayers are or being afraid of hurting His feelings. Just come as you are. Worship Him. Seek His will. Let your requests be known. Suit Up in your Armor. Acknowledge His glory. Trust that He has your very best ready for you.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. For the past few weeks, we have been focusing on repentance. This week, we look at the spiritual transformation that takes place when we surrender our heart to God.

This week’s memory verse:

Judges 17:6

“In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever he wanted.

078924: A Nation in Crisis

A Nation in Crisis

By Ray Stedman / Discovery House

Every day the headlines announce more violence and evil. Our hearts groan as we wonder what life will be like for the next generation. It all seems hopeless, which is probably how Jeremiah felt as he lived among the people of the nation of Judah.

Jeremiah was a reluctant but faithful prophet who spent forty-two years serving God and warning the people to repent. His heart was saddened and angered by the people’s indifference to God and the moral decay that surrounded him. Everything was falling apart–yet Jeremiah continued to seek the Lord.

As we face personal trauma and national crisis, we can learn from the prophet’s example. Ray Stedman walks us through the book of Jeremiah, revealing that repentance was the only answer then–and it’s the only answer today. When people repent, God is faithful to His Word, planting the seeds of new life and giving us hope.

079864: Is This the End? Signs of God"s Providence in a Disturbing New World

Is This the End? Signs of God’s Providence in a Disturbing New World

By Dr. David Jeremiah / Thomas Nelson

Never have the headlines been this jarring, the cultural changes this rapid, or the moral decay this pronounced. What on earth is happening? After each new occurrence, the most oft-heard questions are, “Will the world ever be the same again?” and “Where is God in all of this?”Over the last few decades, Dr. David Jeremiah has become one of the world’s most sought-after Christian leaders on topics that deal with biblical application and modern culture. And few would dispute that the pace at which things are currently changing is unprecedented. The time has come to accept this new normal, Jeremiah says, and understand how God’s hand is still at work on His eternal plan for mankind.

No one can afford to ignore these warnings, but all can better understand the greater story and the role we each play in this changing world. From prophetic clues in Scripture to an understanding of the power of Christ in all believers, this book directs us on a clear path forward.

The Message of Joel, Micah, and Habakkuk: The Bible Speaks Today [BST]

By David Prior / InterVarsity Press

Where is God in times of disaster? How can God allow suffering? What are God’s people to do about moral decay in society? While people throughout the ages have long pondered these questions, three of the Minor Prophets–Joel, Micah, and Habbakuk–provide insights to these perennial problems. The Bible Speaks Today is a series of both Old Testament and New Testament expositions, which are characterized by a threefold ideal: to expound the biblical text with accuracy, to relate it to contemporary life, and to be readable.

David Prior has pastured churches in Cape Town, South Africa, and Oxford, England. He now travels widely, lecturing on the local church around the world. He is the author of The Message of 1 Corinthians in the Bible Speaks series.

Strong Men In Tough Times

By Ed Cole / Resolute Books

Society’s widening gap between technological achievement and moral decay compels men of courage, integrity and true manhood to stand strong. In a quest for satisfaction, many men have lost the meaning of manhood, surrendering ideals to things immoral, illegal, unethical or irresponsible. Today’s tough times require men to overcome dangerous philosophies and bring hope, dignity and order back to a world in desperate need – men who are willing to be heroes.”

Come Down, Lord!

By Roger Ellsworth / Banner of Truth

Come Down, Lord! is a succinct, readable and biblically-based treatment of the vital theme of revival. Its seven short chapters go directly to the heart of the matter, as their headings indicate: We miss You; We need you; We wait for You; We will meet You; We have wronged You; We belong to You; We beseech You.Taking as his starting place the widespread absence of the sense of God’s holy presence and our need of his grace, Roger Ellsworth traces the profound analysis of the church’s spiritual decay outlined in Isaiah 63:3-64:12, and applies its message to our times.

Nothing Is Wasted: How God Redeems What is Broken

By Joseph Bentz / Beacon Hill Press

In a world that can feel overwhelming, it is easy to see loss as the overriding theme of our existence. From the stress of finances to the pain of aging, we see decay all around us. We see the corrupt nature of a fallen world.

Despite the seeming chaos, God’s loving song of redemption echoes through every fiber of creation. Sometimes we hear the melody loud and clear, but more often it is like the refrain of a musical score that is background to a film-present but so subtle we may be unaware of it.

In Nothing Is Wasted: How God Redeems What is Broken Joseph Bentz explores how God clues us in to the big picture of redemption and eternity amid the most difficult and unlovely things in our lives. He helps us remember how a faithful and all-powerful God desires to transform our pain into beauty.

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

memory verse logo

James 4:7-8

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

 • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
 • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
 • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
 • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
 • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
 • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Learn more about hosting this event at your church or conference site by clicking here.

About the book: The GLMW book contains 365 daily challenges for couples to strengthen their relationships to each other and with God.
