Need wisdom?

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Wisdom is needed in times of uncertainty

Probably everyone would agree that 2020-2021 has been a time like no other in our lifetime. We’ve faced more things in these years than we would have ever thought to see. I’ve heard and seen where people are already putting up Christmas decorations — some to try to hurry this year along and hope for a better year next year and others to bring the joy of the holidays into a time full of uncertainty. Wherever there is uncertainty, we need wisdom to make that next step.

The best source of wisdom is our omniscient God

Since God created us, He knows everything about us. Our fears, our illnesses, the stress and anxiety we feel, as well as the things we celebrate. Because God is omniscient, there isn’t anything that happens in our world that He isn’t aware of. In fact, He knew COVID-19 would happen even when He was creating the Garden of Eden. So if we need to seek wisdom, God is the best place to go.

James’ words of wisdom

James, the half-brother of Jesus (typically considered the author of the book of James in the New Testament), wrote “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who give to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without doubting.” (James 1:5-6). Regardless of what we face in life, we can pray for God to grant wisdom, knowledge, and understanding in every situation.

Seeking spiritual wisdom

Asking God for wisdom does not just apply to uncertain times. We can also ask God to help us understand a Biblical principle of which we can’t seem to quite grasp the full understanding. We can also ask God to help us as we try to learn a new task at work or when we need wisdom in making a major life decision, such as moving, taking a new job, or making a big purchase.

No matter what we seem to lack wisdom in, God tells us to ask him for it. After all, God is the one who created the universe and set everything into motion. If anyone understands the things we have a hard time grasping, its God. All the scientific laws may be named after the scientists that discovered them, but they did not create the those laws….God did when he created the world. So why not go to the One who knows it better than anyone else? He is the one who can open our minds and help us see something we didn’t see before or to clear out the confusing thoughts so that we can grasp what’s true.  He the one who can give us ears to hear as things are explained to us in a way that understanding breaks through.

God gives wisdom generously

James also tells us in this verse that God gives wisdom generously. Liberally. He is a big-hearted God and he stands by ready to grant us the wisdom we need. However, the key is to first recognize the need and then to ask God for it. The Greek word for “liberally” is haploos and it means “bountifully” (Strong’s Concordance). So when we ask, He doesn’t just measure it by teaspoon fulls. He dumps it on…as much as we need for the purpose we are asking.

God gives wisdom without criticizing

God doesn’t just give us wisdom generously, but he also does it without criticizing. When I was in school, I was one of the shy kids and would have never raised my hand and asked a question because I didn’t want to look dumb to the other students in the class. In college, when I took a required (trust me! If it wasn’t required, I would not have taken the class!) speech class and before every speech I had to give, I spent time “tossing my cookies.” Most people thought of me as a very quiet person. But I was quiet because I was always worried about what someone else might think and then criticize me in some way. Those who knew me then and now, often wonder whatever happened to the quiet girl.

I’m not shy like that anymore. I am far from quiet. But, I am still glad that God does not criticize when I ask him for help to understand something. He doesn’t roll His eyes in exasperation. There is no long, drawn out sigh of frustration. Instead, He is the loving father who created us and already knows the limited capabilities of our minds. He’s like the parent who’s child is trying to learn to read and the parent picks the child up and sets her in his lap and helps her sound out each sound and put them together until she can read the word on her own. Then He celebrates with us when that “ah-ha” moment comes and we “get it.”

When we ask God for wisdom, we will receive it

James also tells us that when we ask for wisdom, we will receive it. There is no “maybe” or “if God isn’t busy with something else” or “He’ll think about it and get back to us next week.” No. When we ask for wisdom, God will give it. Because we know that God keeps his promises and He will do what He says He will do, we can ask in confidence, with faith. There is no need to doubt. Psalm 5:3 tells us that God hears our voice as we plead our case to Him and then we are to watch expectantly.

What do you need wisdom for? Go ahead and ask God to give it you, then expect Him to give it to you. He is a God who loves to generously give us good gifts.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. Like Mother, Like Daughter

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

She’s just like me

As a mother of a daughter, I’ve heard the saying “like mother, like daughter” more than once. Especially since my daughter is a mini-me. I’ve lost count of the times people tell me she looks like me. When she was little, my dad often said it. I denied it. His solution was to take one of my daughter’s pictures and one of my pictures at the same age and put them side by side. He scanned them together and emailed them to me. Yes…we look exactly alike. Our hair was even combed the same way! The only way you could tell they were not the same child is by the very outdated (but pretty) light green dress I wore in my photo. She enjoys telling people she is a mini-me.

Like mother, like daughter. Have you ever had a parent say something like, “when you have children, I hope you have one just like you?” Usually, it is said because what we are doing in that moment is not good and the intention behind the saying is to make us think about what we doing and then change our behavior. Most of us have those things in our past that were mistakes we do not want our children to repeat and live through the same or similar painful consequences we did. So if we want to avoid the “like mother, like daughter” syndrome and not pass down our waywardness to our children, we need to be sure we are modeling a Christ-like life.

Like Mother, Like daughter: What if she acts just like me?

Looking like me is one thing. But what if she acted like me, made the same mistakes as me? Used the same words I do? If you are a mother of a daughter, you probably cringe at the thought, just as I do. We’ve all made mistakes, said things we wished we could take back, or done things we wish we could get a “re-do”.

As a mother, we need to be cognizant of the idea that our daughters are learning about life from us. They are also learning about God from us. But we are not her only “teachers.” Our daughters are learning about life from the world, her friends and peers, and Hollywood is teaching her about life. She learns about other religions from the outside world. She learns about life through social media. And now that she is grown with a full-time job, she learns about life through work and co-workers.

We have the responsibility to give our daughters a strong foundation so that when the world steps in, she won’t be pulled and sucked into the chaos of the world. Hopefully, what my daughter learns from me will speak louder into her life in a positive way than the world and those around her. If she is going to be like me, than I don’t want to look at her life and find regrets because she learned something negative from me.

“Like Mother, Like Daughter”

Did you know this “saying” is actually scripture? Ezekiel says that it is a proverb that will be used against us. In today’s words, we might say it will come back to bite us. As we grow, mature, and become more spiritually mature, we might look back at the mistakes we made and the bad choices and fear our daughters will be just like us. But when we align ourselves with Jesus and live godly lives, our daughters learn what it means to live godly lives. If we want our daughters to live like Jesus, then we must live like Jesus. We can’t tell our daughter to “do what I say, not what I do.” Actions always speak louder than words. So everyday, I must ask, “What are my actions speaking into my daughter today?”

Pray over her – daily

As my daughter has grown into young adulthood, I tell her ” be smarter than mom. Learn from my mistakes so you don’t have to learn the hard way.” Mostly, I pray over her everyday. Her grandmother prays over her every day. I pray for the Holy Spirit to lead and guide her through life, to show her God’s will for her life, and to open her ears and minds to the truths of God so that they will be louder than the lies of Satan. Regardless of your past mistakes, you too can pray over your daughters.

To not Fear the “like mother, like daughter” Syndrome, be a Godly Example

You can also model Godly behavior. Be the person you want your daughter to be. Use the words you expect her to use. Dress like you want her to dress. Teach her Godly morals and values by living out Godly morals and values. Teach her how to be a wife and mother by the way you live out being a wife and mother. Children learn from how they see us behave. If you want church to be important to her, than make sure church is important to you. If you want her to have a relationship with Christ, then let her see you live out your relationship with Christ.

I want my daughter to see her mother as a woman that honors God, follows Him faithfully, and loves Him beyond measure. What does your daughter see in you?

Before there can be Revival

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Before Revival

Before America will see revival, there has to be repentance.

We know that America needs a revival, but before there can be revival, there must be repentance. It’s interesting that in Ezekiel 14:6 God tells Israel they must repent and turn. We often define repentance as “a turning away from sin.” But God calls Israel to repent and turn. Two actions. Certainly turning away from sin is a part of repentance, just as regretting sin is part of it. The Greek word for repentance is metanoeo, a verb meaning, “to change one’s mind and purpose, as the result of after knowledge.” The knowledge that occurs before repentance is an awareness of sin and our hopelessness to do anything about it on our own. The spark that bring revival is the knowledge and admittance of sin that leads to true repentance.

Steps to True Repentance that leads to revival

For repentance to occur, one must first have a true sense of their own guilt and sinfulness. When we understand just how sinful we are, we also become aware of our helplessness to do anything on our own about it. Then there must be an acknowledgement of God’s mercy available through Christ. As we recognize the price our sin cost our Savior, there should be a hatred for sin that makes us turn away from it and toward God. Then the evidence of repentance is seen when we persistently strive to live a life that honors God by walking in obedience with Him and surrendering our lives to His will.

True repentance results in a change of action. If you tell God you’re sorry about a sin, but keep doing it, then repentance hasn’t occurred. In Acts 26:20, Paul wrote: “I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.”

If we want to see revival in America, it starts with each one of us spending time with God alone, allowing him to reveal unconfessed sins and understanding how that sin grieves God. But knowledge alone isn’t enough. We must confess our sins to him and ask him to forgive us. Then we must turn away from them and follow God’s plans and His commandments. Only then has true repentance occurred.

What did Israel need to repent from in order to experience revival?

Israel’s main sin was turning their back on God and choosing to worship idols. In doing so, they practiced many abominations as part of their idolatry rituals, including temple prostitution and child sacrifice. God sent prophet after prophet to warn the nation, but they refused to listen. They wanted to live the way they wanted, not the way God instructed. They wanted to live just like the rest of the world.

The only problem with living like the rest of the world is that God had called them out and set them apart from the rest of the world. Israel was His chosen people and through them His plan for the redemption of all mankind would occur. They were supposed to be different. They were supposed to show the rest of the world who God was.

Why are we to be different than the world?

Likewise, Christians have been set apart from the world. We are not supposed to conform to the world’s way of living. In Romans 12:2, Paul teaches, “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Peter tells us in 1 Peter 1:16 that we are to be holy because God is holy. We are to be different than the world. Why? Because Jesus told us in Matthew 5:14 that we are the light of the world. A light that brings revival to the world.

To understand what it means to be the light of the world, we turn to John 8:12, where Jesus said,  “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” At the moment we ask Jesus to save us from our sins and to be our Savior, Jesus moved in and took up residence within us through the person of the Holy Spirit. So, we have the light of the world living inside of us.

We have been set apart from the world with the purpose of being different than the world so that the light of Jesus shines through us, making us the light of the world. As the world sees the light of Jesus in us, they too can experience repentance from the darkness of their sins and live in the eternal light of Jesus. As a result, they too experience revival.

What does America need to repent from in order to experience revival?

Do you see any similarities between Israel’s sin and America’s? America – once known for “In God We Trust” – has turned it’s back on God and is swiftly trying to wipe out the existence of God so that we too can live just like the rest of the world. We’ve created idols out of money, careers, possession, relationship, and hobbies. Since it’s beginning as a nation, America has been the nation that showed the world who God is, — but now, we look just like the rest of the world.

Israel did not experience revival, so, what happened to Israel?

After generations of prophets warned Israel to repent and they refused, God sent the Assyrians and Babylonians who conquered Israel and Judah and carried them away into captivity. History has shown us time and time again that when a nation refused to acknowledge God as Lord, that nation lost its greatness. And that is exactly what happened to Israel. During the reign of King David, then nation prospered. His son Solomon brought the nation to its height of glory and prosperity – but Solomon had over 700 wives from many different nations and in attempting to please them, he allowed each of them to bring in their own gods and build shrines to them. And it was all downhill from there.

What Can America Learn from Israel’s Refusal to Repent?

Can we honestly say that American is “one nation under God” anymore? Not at all. We too have allowed religions of all kinds into our nation under the right of freedom of religion. The result is the same as Israel – there are now many gods in America.

We can’t even honestly say we are “one nation.” We’ve allow division to rip us apart at the seems. Division in religion, race, class, and culture. There is even division within our churches over traditional worship or contemporary.

What Can America Expect if We Do Not Repent?

If God would allow His chosen people to be conquered and carried away out of the Promised Land, do you think America can keep on in it’s pride, arrogance, and unrepentant heart and escape God’s judgement? Through every prophet in the Bible, God speaks to us to day with the same warning He gave to Israel. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God says, “Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations.”

It’s time for Christians in America to repent and turn away from our idols. We need to turn our faces away from sin and seek God with all our heart, mind, and strength. We need to return to God. As Christians, we too are set apart from the world. We are supposed to be different. We are supposed to bring the world to God. Christians are in the world, not to conform to the world, but so the world will see and know God through us. We need to revive our love for God and our passion to live for Him. We need a revival, but only after repentance of God’s people will revival occur.

Faith Requires Obedience

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

A Conversation with God

We all know we need faith, but when God asks us to do something beyond what makes sense or beyond our capabilities, faith is often exchanged for excuses, questions, or disobedience. Can you imagine the following conversation?

God: “I want you to pack up all you own and move you and your family to a land that I will show you. I have a task for you”

Me: “Ok, God.” [I pull out my phone and open the Waze GPS app] “Where are we going?”

God: “You don’t need to know that yet.”

Me: “Well….yes….God, I do. How else will I know how to get there?”

God: “I will show you.”

Me: “You mean, you want me to pack up everything I own and leave my family and go where I don’t know where I’m going?” God: “Yes.”

Me: “What will my family say?”

God: “Does it matter?”

Me: [Quiet for a moment] “Well, how far away God? I don’t want to go too far away from family. It will be fine as long as I can make quick trips back home.”

God: “I will show you.”

Me: “Will there be snow? I don’t really like the cold. You know that the cold makes those old injuries hurt.”

God: “I will show you.”

Me: “What about money? I have to work and pay the bills, provide the insurance.”

God: “I will supply all you need.”

Me: “I will miss my family.”

God: “My grace is sufficient.”

Me: “What if I can’t do what you’re asking me to do?”

God: “You can do all things through me because I will strengthen you.”

Me: “What if I fail?”

God: “I can do anything but fail.”

Me: “But God, this task is overwhelming and beyond what I can do.”

God: “Nothing is impossible for me.”

Abraham had a similar conversation

Have you had any similar conversations with God? Abraham had a similar experience. Hebrews 11:8-9 says, “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and went out to a place he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, coheirs of the same promise.” We find the account of the conversation between Abraham and God in Genesis 12.

The Lord said to Abram: Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran.

By Faith, Abraham Obeyed

There is no record of a conversation where Abraham asked questions…he simply obeyed. He stepped out on faith. Faith requires obedience. (Click to tweet)  Faith requires us to have a deep conviction that God will keep his promises and do what He says He will do. It requires us to have complete and utter trust in His faithfulness, that His words are true. It requires us to believe that the impossible task He has given us to do is possible through Him when we do what he tells us to do. Abraham simply believed. He didn’t question God. He didn’t seek out an appointment with his pastor to discuss his travel plans. Abraham just went. He had faith that God would see him safely to the destination God had chosen.

Disobedience when God calls, demonstrates a lack of faith

The simple truth is, if God is calling us to do something and we choose not to obey Him, then we do not have faith that God will provide and protect us. Faith requires action and that action is obedience to God’s will and plan – exactly as God reveals it to us. (Click to tweet) We can’t follow part of the plan and ignore others. Faith requires total and complete obedience.

Maybe it’s your age that keeps you from being obedient to what God is telling you to do. Did you notice that Abraham was 75 years old when he left? If you are still breathing and have a pulse, then God isn’t finished with you yet. (Click to tweet)  What is He asking you to do?

Moses’ Excuses before His Faith

While Abraham was obedient and acted with faith, Moses had to get through all of his excuses before He obeyed God. Even after the experience of the burning bush, Moses still gave God excuses:

Excuse 1: “But I’m not qualified, God” (Exodus 3:11).

If you remember, Moses was raised by the Egyptian princess and when he saw the Egyptian taskmaster, beating a fellow Israelite, he stepped in and tried to do things his own way. He killed the Egyptian and became wanted for murder. He had to run for his life. So now, when God’s timing was right for the task, Moses feels like a failure. The good news is that God can use our failures to mold us into the person He needs us to be to complete the task He calls us to do. (click to tweet)

When Moses ran away, he became a shepherd. God used these years to teach him all about shepherding – skills he would learn in shepherding God’s people. (Somehow I think before it was all done, Moses found out that shepherding sheep was way more easy than shepherding God’s chosen people!) If you are using the excuse of not being qualified to avoid doing what God is calling you to do, allow God to use any failures in your life as teaching grounds to make you ready for the God-sized dream He has called you to do.

Excuse 2: “But I don’t know enough, God.” (Exodus 3:12).

Moses wasn’t focusing on God and what God could do through him. He was focusing on himself and all that he lacked to accomplish what God had planned. When God calls us to a task (even the ones that seem impossible), He will be with us, equip us, and give us everything we need, the moment we need it. Remember that God is the I AM and the I AM is sending you to do what He’s asking you to do. You know all you need to know for this moment in time. (Click to tweet)

Excuse 3:“But, I don’t have the right abilities.” (Exodus 4:11).

Moses tried to tell God (the one that made his mouth) that he was slow of speech. God’s response: “Who made the human mouth? Who makes him mute or deaf, seeing or blind? Is it not I, Yahweh?  Now go! I will help you speak and I will teach you what to say.” What abilities do you think you lack to do what God is telling you to do? God says that nothing is impossible for Him and whatever abilities you think you lack are of no consequence to what God wants to do through you. (click to tweet)

God calls us to act by faith for what we cannot do so He gets the glory through us

The fact is, God likes to call us to do what we think we are not qualified to do, know enough about how to do it, and lack the abilities needed to do it. Why? Because then He gets all the glory when He accomplishes what man perceives to be the impossible. (click to tweet) We can surrender to Him what we feel we lack and step out in faith, like Abraham, and do what he tells us to do, in total and complete obedience – without asking questions – because we know that God’s plans for us are only good plans – plans that will give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). We can step out in faith, because we can trust God to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).

So what is God asking you to do? Will you offer Him excuses or faith-filled obedience? Will you be a Moses or an Abraham?

Who Is Melchizedek?

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
Keynote Speaker, CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

I suppose it’s probably a good thing they didn’t have kindergarten back in the day when Melchizedek lived because could you imagine trying to learn how to spell that at five years old? But just who is this person in the book of Hebrews that the write claim that Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek?

Aaron is not Melchizedek

The writer of Hebrews is writing about the theological and moral state of his readers while establishing the superiority of Jesus as priest over Aaron and the Levitical order of the priesthood that was established in the Old Testament. So let’s start with Aaron to answer the question, “Who is Melchizedek?”

Aaron is the brother of Moses and after God brought the Israelite nation  out of Egypt, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and the instructions to build a temple. God appointed Aaron as the high priest over the nation and all the priests were to come from the tribe of Levi – that was their only requirement. Because God had called and appointed Aaron as high priest, God established his authority in the role and he was to offer to God sacrifices for sins on behalf of the nation. However, Aaron was just like you and me – a sinner. So before he could offer sacrifices for the whole nation, he had to make a sin offering for himself and for the people. The Levitical priesthood of the Jews was grounded in the order of Aaron, but the priesthood of Jesus Christ is grounded in the order of Melchizedek…so who is Melchizedek?

The first appearance of Melchizedek in the Bible

Melchizedek first appears in the Bible in Genesis 15:18-20. He was the king of Salem (ancient name for Jerusalem) and priest of the Most High God (Hebrews 7:1). He is not mentioned again in the Bible after the Genesis account until Psalm 110:4 and then we see him in Hebrews 5:6-11 and 6:20-7:28 when the writer of Hebrews draws from the Old Testament scriptures to show that the order of Melchizedek was eternal and therefore better than the temporary Levitical order.

Hebrews 7:3 says, Melchizedek was “without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.” In Hebrew, his name means “king of righteousness.” He was also declared to be the king of Salem, which means “king of peace.” When we recognize that Salem is an ancient name for Jerusalem, the idea that the city is named for “peace” is rather interesting because history shows us that this city is known for war and conquest. It has been anything but a city of peace.

Melchizedek had divine attibutes

The only exception is that it is also the city where the Prince of Peace came to present Himself and the God of Peace and chose the city as the location for Solomon to build His temple. So from this, we see that Melchizedek had divine attributes of eternity, righteousness, and peace. However, we can also see evidence of sovereignty, which was recognized by Abraham.

After being victorious in war and defeated Chedorlaomer and his three allies, Abraham was returning home and Melchizedek met him and presented bread and wine to Abraham and his weary men as a gesture of friendship. He then blessed Abraham in the name of El Eyon meaning “God Most High”. Abraham then gave Melchizedek a tenth of all he had when he returned. Abraham recognized and acknowledged Melchizedek’s superiority by paying him a tithe.

Is Melchizedek Christ?

The next time we see Melchizedek appear in the Bible is in the messianic psalm written by David in Psalm 110 where Melchizedek is presented as a type of Christ and then Hebrews presents the same concept and both Melchizedek and Christ are called kings of righteousness and peace.

The writer of Hebrews, then, argues that the new priesthood of Christ is superior to the old levitical order and priesthood of Aaron. Some Bible scholars say that Melchizedek was actually a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, meaning he visited Abraham in the form of man before his virgin birth. We know that Abraham saw and spoke with the Lord in this form in Genesis 17, so the theory that Melchizedek and Jesus Christ are one and the same is feasible.

In Hebrews 6:20, we find that Jesus became “a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” Typically, the word order shows a succession for the role of priest. But we see Melchizedek mentioned in Genesis in the brief encounter with Abraham and that is all we are told about him. No genealogy is recorded for Melchizedek. So the only way to say that Jesus is of the “order of Melchizedek” is to assume that Melchizedek and Jesus are the same person and therefore, the order of high priest belongs eternally to Jesus and only Jesus.

Melchizedek: A priest forever

Going back to Hebrews 7:3, the writer states that Melchizedek did not have a father or mother or genealogy and that he had no beginning or end, that he resembled the Son of God, and that he remains a priest forever. If the writer of Hebrews meant this in a literal way, then Melchizedek must be Jesus because there has never been a human/earthly king that remains a priest forever and every human (other than Adam and Eve) have a father and mother. Melchizedek can’t be Adam, because Adam died and the writer of Hebrews stated that Melchizedek had no end of days. So from this point of view, Abraham encountered the Son of God in the appearance of the King of Righteousness and Peace who blessed him and then Abraham presented Him with a tithe.

If the writer of Hebrews was speaking more in a figurative way regarding Melchizedek being without genealogy, without beginning or end and is forever a priest, then his purpose is simply to demonstrate the mysteriousness of the person Abraham encountered. Some point to Hebrews 7:3 where the writer states, “but made like the Son of God to argue that Melchizedek and Christ are not the same person.

There is not an exact answer to the question

So the Bible does not give an exact answer on whether Melchizedek was indeed Jesus that appeared to Abraham. If Melchizedek was not Christ, then we can safely say that he is a type of Christ. Israel’s kingship was traced through the lineage of David. The priesthood was traced through the lineage of Aaron. But there was a priest-king residing in Jerusalem, the city of God, long before either David or Aaron lived.

Don’t lose the point: Jesus is a better high priest

When we look at the theme of the book of Hebrews, the writer’s point is that Jesus is better. He is better than the prophets, the angels, Moses, and he provides a better rest than what Joshua promised. And then in chapters 6 and 7, the writer argues that Jesus is a better high priest. Remember Aaron? He was from which tribe? Levi. When God called Aaron, he ordained that all priests would come from the tribe of Levi – and a descendant (or “order”) of Aaron. Jesus was from the tribe of Judah – so then how can Jesus be a better priest? The only way to answer that question is to acknowledge that Jesus belongs to a priesthood that came before Aaron – one that goes all the way back to Abraham. So the priesthood of Jesus is a better priesthood because He never had a beginning and His priesthood will never have an end. He will always be our high priest, ready to forgive us of our sin and restore our fellowship with God.

The Levitical priesthood was meant to be temporary – until Jesus came

While the priesthood of Jesus has no end, the Levitical priesthood was always meant to be temporary – until the Messiah came. The Levitical priesthood was not capable of bringing perfection or completeness (Hebrews 7:11). Psalm 110:4 promised a future priesthood that would be a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, showing there would be a change in the priesthood from the Levitical priesthood to the eternal priesthood. This is why Jesus could be from the tribe of Judah and still be a priest. The Melchizedek priesthood was not established on the physical requirement to be from the tribe of Levi. He existed before the law. (Hebrews 7:16)

The Levitical priesthood is merely human

Additionally, in arguing that the priesthood of Jesus is better than the Levitical priesthood, Aaron and all his descendants were just as human and just as sinful as you and I. Even two of Aaron’s sons used improper methods of worship and God struck them dead. The sons of Eli participated in immoral acts and used the temple as a brothel and God condemned them. The only requirement listed in the Bible for the Aaronic priesthood was that they had to be a descendant of Aaron.

Only Jesus has the power of an endless life

Hebrews 7:16 says, “who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.” So the Aaronic priesthood is derived from the law while the Melchizedek priesthood requires the power of an indestructible life. Aaron and every one of his descendants died — they were destructible. The Bible never records the death of Melchizedek. Yes, Jesus died on the cross as payment for our sins, but he also rose from the dead and then ascended into heaven and will live for eternity — an indestructible life.

We will know the answer in heaven

Certainly there are some very strong reasons to believe that Melchizedek and Jesus are, in fact, the same person. But the Bible does not confirm (nor deny) this theory. So it’s just one of those things that we will have to wait until we are in heaven to get the real answer – or to meet this mysterious Melchizedek.
