Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

When a nation needs to experience revival, it’s people will call evil good and good evil. They think highly of themselves. So much so that they think they know more than God and turn against Him. Bribes are common and the guilty go free while the innocent never see justice.

From The Message Bible:

Doom to you who call evil good and good evil…Doom to you who think you’re so smart, who hold such a high opinion of yourselves! All you’re good at is drinking — champion boozers who collect trophies from drinking bouts. And this line your pockets with bribes from the guilty while you violate the rights of the innocent.

The Need for Revival

  1. We have become a nation that calls evil good and good evil. Our nation has redefined marriage to make homosexual marriage legal. We are more interested in being “politically correct” and “culture sensitive” that we ignore sin and say it is “good.”
  2. Our people have made us a nation of arrogant, self-centered people with an “all about me” mentality. We have such high opinions of ourselves that we toss God’s opinion to the wind and think we know so much better than God.
  3. Hollywood has depicted the way to have a good time is to drink, drink, and drink some more until you’re so drunk you let go of all inhibitions and just enjoy life. However, the reality is regret, legal problems, and addiction that destroy relationships and homes.
  4. There are some who are in seats of power who will take a bribe and let the guilty go free, doing whatever they want while ignoring and even violating the rights of the innocent.

Praying for Revival

Pray for God to convict the hearts of those in political positions to restore our nation to the Biblical principles our forefathers established and built this nation on. Ask God to convict them of the sin of calling evil good and good evil.

Pray that good would awaken the people of our nation to the own arrogance and pride and to have them hearts that would love their neighbor even more than they love themselves.

Pray that moral depravity would be replaced with God-centered lives. Ask God to open the eyes of the people of our nation to the lies Satan has slipped in to make us believe that alcohol and drugs are the way to a good time. Pray for those who have addiction problems that God would help them overcome them and repair the relationships that have been broken.

Lastly, pray for those who sit in seats of power to be honest, people of integrity who acknowledge God above all else. Pray for the ones who are innocent that God will protect them and pour out His vengeance on those who would ignore and violent them.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

From The Message Bible:

By working righteousness, Holy God will show what “holy” is.

The Need for Revival

We tend to look at people who sin worse than we do and then lie to ourselves and say, “I’m not doing so bad.” But when we stand before Holy God, the only measuring of our lives will be against His own righteousness. God doesn’t look at sin as “little” or “big.” Sin is sin and when we compare ourselves to a righteous, Holy God (the only One whom we should compare ourselves to!), we all fall short. Romans 3:10 says, “None is righteous, no, not one.” When we find ourselves thinking we’re not as bad as the next person, we need to stop and see how we measure up in the eyes of God. When we measure ourselves against the only person by whom we should measure, we will see the need of a revival in our own heart.

What the Bible says about our unrighteousness

  • We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. Isaiah 64:6
  • Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice. Jeremiah 22:13
  • For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Romans 1:18
  • They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. And they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. Romans 1:29-32
  • But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. Romans 2:8
  • If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Because we are all “unrighteous” everyone of us needs to experience revival

As you read through those verses, did the Holy Spirit reveal anything to you about your own unrighteousness? Christians need to be careful about using our salvation and God’s gift of grace and forgiveness as freedom to sin. It’s true that once we are saved, we cannot lose our salvation but that doesn’t mean that we can abuse God’s grace and live however we want to.

The church in Rome must have had this problem because in Romans 6:15, Paul writes to the church and says, “What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means!” In fact, because we are filled with the Holy Spirit, there should be a conviction within us whenever we sin. As a Christian, there should be an overwhelming love in our hearts for the sacrifice Jesus made with His own life to pay the price for our sin so that we can have enteral life. It should break our hearts when we sin.

Praying for Revival

We need to stop looking at those who sin more than us and using them to compare ourselves to. Today, take time to compare yourself with the Holy, righteous God and ask Him to show you where you fall short. Then confess and repent and ask Him to forgive you.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

From The Message Bible:

He looked for a crop of justice and saw them murdering each other. He looked for a harvest of righteousness and heard only the moans of victims.

The Need for Revival

The need for revival is due to the condition of the hearts of the people in our nation. When God looks at our nation does He see justice and righteousness or does He see murder and hear the cries of the victims?

As a nation, do we respect the lives of all people as uniquely and wonderfully made creation of God? If you think we do, then look up the number of people murdered in your city, state, and our country this year. If you think we do, consider the number of babies that were murdered through abortion this year. There should be no division between races or hatred towards any person. Yes, we need a revival.

What the Bible says regarding anger and murder

  • For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:20
  • Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. Psalm 37:8
  • Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools. Ecclesiastes 7:9
  • Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11
  • A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated. Proverbs 14:7
  • A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression. Proverbs 29:22
  • What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. James 4:1-2
  • Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. Psalm 37:7-9
  • Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer. 1 John 3:15

God hears the cries of victims

In Genesis, we find the first murder recorded in the Bible when Cain killed his brother, Abel. In that account, God comes to Cain and says, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.” From a legal definition of “murderer” many of us would not be found guilty. But when we look at 1 John 3:15 and read that everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, would God find us guilty?

It’s a problem of the heart

Matthew 15:18-19 says, “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.” Jeremiah 17:9-10 tells us, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds”

We need new, clean hearts…We need revival

If we want to see a revival, we need to pray along with the psalmist and cry out to God, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) In Ezekiel 36:26, God says, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

A heart of stone is one that has become calloused and hardened to the sin around us. It is a heart that has become complacent to the things of God. It is a heart that no longer sees sin the way God does. A heart of stone will make excuses for sin. It become angry and defensive when confronted with sin.

A heart of flesh is one that loves God above all else. It is a heart that is willing to be molded and shaped by God. It is a heart that is contrite and repentant when confronted with sin. A heart of flesh is a heart that is obedient to the will of God, no matter the costs.

Praying for Revival

Ask God to convict us for how our heart has deceived us and how He might find us guilty. Ask him to create within you a clean heart and renew a right spirit within you. And ask Him to give you a new heart and spirit, to remove your heart of stone give you a heart of flesh.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

The Need for Revival

  1. Would you consider our nation one that is contrite and lowly in spirit or one that is arrogant and prideful?
  2. Where does God say He dwells?
  3. Based on this verse and your answer to the first question, can we say that God dwells in our nation?
  4. In the Message Bible, this verse says: “I live in the high and holy places, but also with the low-spirited, the spirit-crushed, And what I do is put new spirit in them, get them up and on their feet again.”

Praying for Revival

Ask God to reveal to you any arrogance and pride in your own life and to give you a contrite heart and lowly spirit. Ask God to break the hearts of the prideful and to put a new spirit in them.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.

Praying for Revival

A daily verse about the state of our nation and time for Christians reflect and unite in prayer, asking God to send a revival across our land and turn our nation back to Him.

Do we need a revival?

From the Message Bible:

The Message Bible says this for Isaiah 3:9, “Everything people say and do is at cross-purposes with God, a slap in my face. Brazen in their depravity, they flout their sins like degenerate Sodom. Doom to their eternal souls! They’ve made their bed; now they’ll sleep in it.

The Need for Revival

Read the verse again in both the ESV version printed in the graphic and the paraphrase as printed in the Message Bible. But before you do, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how this verse relates to the need for our nation to experience revival. Clearly, these verses refer to the sin of Sodom. When we read about Sodom and its sister city, Gomorrah, the result of their sin was God destroyed them with fire and brimstone. This doesn’t mean that our nation is in danger of being destroyed with fire and brimstone (although God could do that should he choose to), but without a revival occurring, our nation is on a path that leads towards us experiencing God’s judgment … sooner or later and based on what these verses say, we’re probably closer than we want to admit.

What was the sin of Sodom?

To fully understand this verse and be able to apply it to our nation today, we need to make sure we understand what the sin of Sodom was. The biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah is recorded in Genesis chapters 18-19. These are the cities that two angels came to visit Abraham and informed him God was going to destroy them because of their sin and Abraham began to barter with God to save the cities. Abraham’s nephew, Lot, was living there.

After the angels left Abraham they went to visit the cities and because of God’s fellowship with Abraham, they were there to get Lot and his family out of the cities before it was destroyed. As night fell in the cities, Lot took the two angels, disguised as male humans, into his home and the men of the city surrounded the house and demanded that Lot send the men (angels) outside so they could gang rape them. Based then, on this Biblical account, the sin of Sodom was homosexuality.

Homosexuality wasn’t Sodom’s only sin

However, this was not their only sin. Ezekiel 16:49-50 declares, “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me…” The Hebrew word translated “detestable” refers to something that is morally disgusting and is the exact same word used in Leviticus 18:22 that refers to homosexuality as an “abomination.”

Similarly, Jude 7 declares, “…Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.” So, again, while homosexuality was not the only sin in which the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah indulged, it does appear to be the primary reason for the destruction of the cities.

National Reflections for Revival:

  1. When we understand the what the sin of Sodom was, how does that parallel with our nation? If we are like Sodom, what does that say about our need for revival?
  2. Would God say of our nation that everything we say and do is at cross-purposes with Him? Do the looks on our faces bare witness against us?
  3. Would God say of our nation that we proclaim our sin and do not hide it? Would He say that we are brazen in our depravity and flout our sin before the world?
  4. Does God feel that our nation is a slap in His face?

Praying for Revival

Ask God to forgive our nation for its depravity, and being a slap in His face. Pray that God would open the eyes and hearts of our people to recognize the lies of Satan in regards to homosexuality. Ask God to send a revival to our nation and turn our hearts back to Him.

Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me.
