Revelation 22:17. Come

Rev 22 17

At this time of year, many of us receive invitations to parties and events. The office Christmas party. The Church Choir fellowship. The family Christmas dinner. Perhaps you received an invitation to a beautiful Christmas wedding. A New Year’s Eve celebration. Some invitations may have been received through a text. Or maybe through a Facebook event invite. Some may have come with an elegant and costly formal invitation. Perhaps someone you know received a coveted invitation to an event you longed to go to, but you didn’t receive an invite and now you feel hurt, rejected. Without the invite, you don’t have the information to reserve your spot at the event. Without the invite that would be checked at the door, you would never get in.  Of all the invites you could ever receive, there is one in God’s Word that is the most important invitation you’ll ever receive and it’s one that has a required RSVP and the invite will be checked at door.

The good news about this particular invite, which we find in Revelation 22:17, is that itinvite to go with Rev 22 17 has your name on it. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, where you’ve come from, where you are today, or how many times in the past you’ve declined the invite in the past. If you just read Revelation 22:17, this invite is for you. Read the verse again.

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever to come and take a drink of the will, let him take the water of life freely.

That word…whosoever…that means YOU. The invitation is for you. So if you’ve been waiting for your invite – here it is. It is 100% free. You don’t even have to worry about what to wear because Jesus will give you a robe of righteousness and a crown of life.

my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)

he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12)

be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. (Revelation 2:10)

You don’t have to worry about transportation because God will send angels to carry you there. We find this in Luke’s gospel in the story of Lazarus and the rich man. As Jesus tells this story, we see two very different people who live very different lives, have very different death experiences, and experience very different eternal destinies. The rich man lived with every luxury known. Jesus said this man was “clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day” (Luke 16:19) It was a great life. But his death was not. The rich man died without ever acknowledging God. Upon entering his eternal destiny, the rich man found himself in the torments of hell. But Lazarus has a very different story. In this life, Lazarus was poor and sickly. Jesus described him as a beggar who sat at the gate of the rich man every day, covered in sores that dogs would lick and hoped for just a few crumbs from the rich man’s table. He may have been physically poor, but spiritually Lazarus rich. Lazarus had chosen to place his faith in God and so when he died he was carried by the angels to his eternal destiny in Heaven. So there is no transportation needed.

When Revelation 22:17 invites each one of us to take freely of the water of life, it means exactly that. It’s free. There is nothing you can do to be accepted into heaven except simply receive this free gift. There is any “good deed” good enough to earn your way to Heaven nor does it matter how many good deeds you do. Our good deeds simply are not good enough. In fact, in the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah paints a rather disgusting picture for even our very best good deeds.

But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
(Isaiah 64:6)

The Hebrew phrase for “filthy rags” is ukabeged ehdim and literally means, “like as rags of menstruation.” Sorry if that’s disgusting and grosses you out – but it is in the Bible so the rightful credit for such a description is Isaiah’s. However, hopefully you get the picture that no matter what we do, all our acts are disgusting to God and He is repulsed by our efforts to try to earn our way into Heaven. Think about it for a moment. God, out of His love and mercy, has already provided a way for us to get there. That way came at a huge cost to Him – the sacrifice of His Son Jesus. But we want to throw that gift back in his face and try to find our own way to Heaven. Getting to Heaven, sounds rather hopeless – and it is, if we try to do it our own way. Ephesians 2:1 says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” Have you ever seen a dead person do anything for themselves? The only thing a dead person can do is lay there and be…well….dead. That’s it. And that is exactly how hopeless we are to earn salvation apart from God’s plan and His free gift. So how is getting to heaven possible?

Our only hope for eternal life in Heaven is by accept the invitation. We do so by recognizing our hopeless, broken, sinfulness that separates us from God. Then, by faith we believe that God sent his Son to die on the cross, to hang there as our sin, in order to pay the just punishment for sin that we deserved.  Jesus did the work for us. He paid our debt. He took our place. That is our only hope, that Jesus became sin—our sin—and in so doing, he likewise became our righteousness. II Corinthians 5:21 says it well, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

This is why no matter what we do or how good we are God still sees us a filthy rags. Imagine how dishonoring it is to God’s grace and to Christ’s who endured the cross in our place when we try to save ourselves by our acts of righteousness or try to find another way. It is only through the power of Christ’s resurrection and our death to our sinful self (Philippians 3:10-11) that we are changed and given a new heart. Because of what Christ did, we are transformed from hopelessly lost with a destination to hell to gloriously saved with a destination (and a free angelic ride) to heaven. Only after we are transformed are we then able to confess that Jesus is Lord. In that moment, God no longer sees us as a “sinner” but as His child, dearly beloved, justified and cleansed from all sin.

In Revelation 22:17, the invitation is for whosoever will to come freely and take a drink of the water of life. There is no cost because Jesus already paid the expense. What is this water of life that He invites us to drink? During His earthly ministry, Jesus met a spiritually thirsty woman at a well. Her reputation was wretched and she drew water alone and at an inconvenient time of day to avoid the other women. This spiritually thirsty woman was the kind of woman the other women in town gossiped about. She was the sort you didn’t hang out with if you cared about what others think about you. But Jesus had a divine appointment with this outcast woman. You see the disciples and Jesus were traveling and usually the Jews avoided Samaria often taking a longer route to go around it rather than through it.  But John 4:4 says, “He must needs go through Samaria.” Did you catch it? Here it is again: “He must needs go.”  Jesus knew this spiritually thirsty woman would be at the well at that specific time and orchestrated things so that He was there waiting on her. When she arrived, Jesus asked her for a drink of water and engaged her in a conversation about water. He told her that water from Jacob’s well would quench thirst only temporarily but the water He offered would quench thirst forever. Now hauling water in Bible days wasn’t easy, so naturally the Samaritan woman was intrigued by the idea of never being thirsty again. She was still thinking physical while Jesus was talking spiritual. The woman says, “Give me some of this water so I am never thirsty again and don’t have to come to the well and draw water every day.”  After some further conversation, Jesus tells her that He is the Messiah – the one promised to come to save people from their sins. She was so overjoyed that she left her heavy water pot at the well and went into the city telling them all about Jesus and then she brought them to Him.  Jesus is the living water and the invitation extended to “whosoever” is the gift of eternal life.

Yes, eternal life is a free gift. But in order for any gift to become yours, what must you do? If I offer you a gift of some expensive item but you turn and walk away from it, is the gifted item yours? No. For it to become yours, you have to reach out and accept it. The same is true with the free gift of eternal life – and there is only one way to receive it.

In John 14:6 Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. And in John 10:9 he said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved. Luke wrote in Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

John 10 9Jesus is the only way. He is the door to Heaven. There is no other way. As a kid, we used to sing a song that says:

One door, and only one
And yet its sides are two,
Inside and outside,
On which side are you?
One Door, and only one,
And yet its sides are two,
I’m on the inside,
On which side are you?

Those on the inside are the ones who placed their faith in Jesus, and asked Him to be their Lord and Savior. Lazarus is on the inside. Jesus stands at the doorway to Heaven. He is the door. To gain entrance you have to go through Him. He’s not only issued the invitation to you – but if you accept, he will provide you with the appropriate attire and your transportation for getting there.

Come. Whoever you are. Come. Come drink of the living water. The invitation has been offered. Will you accept it?

776585: Letters to the Church Letters to the Church

By Francis Chan / David C Cook

If God had it His way, what would our churches look like?

In his most powerful book yet, Pastor Francis Chan digs deep into biblical truths, reflections on his own failures and dreams, and stories of ordinary people God is using to change the world.

As Chan says, “We’ve strayed so far from what God calls Church. We all know it. We know that what we’re experiencing is radically different from the Church in Scripture. For decades, church leaders like myself have lost sight of the inherent mystery of the Church. We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It’s time for that to change.”

When Jesus returns, will He find us caring for His Bride-even more than for our own lives? Letters to the Church reminds us of how powerful, how glorious the Church once was … and calls us to once again be the Church God intended us to be.

Bonus Videos: The 4 videos from Francis Chan’s BASIC Study series (Fellowship, Communion, Teaching, Prayer) are included here as additional material for you to feel free to use in your church. They are not part of the “Letters to the Church” series.

291119: Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It. Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It.

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

New York Times bestselling author and pastor Mark Batterson believes the key to radically increasing your faith, joy, and abundance can be found in these three words:

Flip the blessing.

His discovery started with a simple experiment. Whenever he received a blessing, he would give a similar blessing away. If someone paid him a compliment or gave him a gift or went out of their way to help him, he would return the favor by doing something similar for someone else.

We flip the blessing by blessing others in the way God has blessed us. That’s how the blessing becomes a double blessing. It turns giving into a game–one we can’t win because God will always outgive us! It’s an ancient truth found within the Abrahamic covenant: “I will bless you…and you will be a blessing.”

In other words, we are blessed to bless. In a day and age where the idea of blessing has been reduced to a hashtag (#blessed), Batteron challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing. Don’t settle for half of what God offers. Discover how you can both get it and give it.

God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage - By: Julia M. Bruce God, Love, and Marshmallow Wars: 365 Daily Challenges to Grow Your Marriage

By Julia M. Bruce / WestBow Press

Heaven is Real – but so is Hell. Which will you choose?

rev 21 8Hell is a real place. It’s made of stuff that is worse than your worst nightmare! 1 John 1:9 says, “God is love.” So if God is love, then why does He send people to Hell? The answer is he doesn’t. People choose Hell as their eternal destination when they reject God and His free gift of salvation through Jesus.

Hell was created for Satan who once was an archangel in Heaven, named Lucifer. Lucifer became jealous of God and decided he wanted to be God. As a result, he and one-third of the angels in heaven attempted a coup in Heaven. Only, they were defeated. God created hell for Lucifer and his followers. Lucifer is more commonly called the Devil or Satan. In the Bible he is also called the Great Deceiver. His followers are known as demons. God created Hell for Satan and his demons.

When man sinned way back in the Garden of Eden, a great divide was created between a holy and righteous God and sinful man. God created man to have fellowship with us. Yet, when man sinned, God’s holiness could not look on sin and God had to judge sin. The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. Wages are what you earn for a certain action. If you get up and go to work every day this week, the wages you earn will show up in your paycheck. The wages we earn for our sin is death. (Romans 6:23) Just as a child has consequences for disobeying his or her parents, so there are consequences when we disobey God. As a result, we are all spiritually dead in our sin until the moment that we accept Christ as our Savior. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth as a baby, lived among us, and then he paid our sin debt for us. Remember that our wages for sin is death – Christ died in our place. He was buried in a tomb for three days and then rose again. When we recognize our own brokenness and sin and that we are on our way to Hell as payment for our sin, we have the realization that we are a sinner. We then have a choice to remain lost in our sin or to come to Christ by faith in who he is and what he did for us and ask him to forgive us and cleans us of all our sin. (1 John 1:9). As we invite Him to be our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit moves in and dwells within us.

One of the most amazing concepts is that when God created man, He knew man would sin. He knew I would sin. He knew you would sin. He also knew that because of that sin, He would have to send His only begotten Son to this earth to pay our sin debt. Even knowing what it would cost Him, he created us anyway.

Yes, God is love. We know He is love because even when he knew from before the world was created that you and I would sin, he still created us and he still provided a way to restore fellowship with us and redeem us from our broken, sinfulness. He knew every sin of our entire lives. He knew that we would need someone to save us from those sins and so in his love and mercy, he sent his son to die a horrible, cruel death in our place so that we would not have to spend eternity in hell.

Why then do people go to hell? Because they reject the free gift of Christ’s sacrifice and payment of our sin debt. They turn away from it. Revelation 21:8 says, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and the murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” Sinners do not want to be confronted with their sin. They would rather create laws that will legalize sin than to confess their sin. They think if they can make a sin legal in the eyes of man they will not be guilty. However, no law of man would over over-rule God’s law and when we stand before God at the end of our lives he will judge us according to His laws – not man’s. At that time, he will either see you covered in the blood of Christ which cleanses you from all unrighteousness and you will spend eternity in Heaven with him or the sins of your entire life will be exposed and you will hear God say the worst words you could ever hear: “Depart from me for I never knew you.” My friend, God does not send people to hell. They send themselves.

What is hell like? Pastor Rick Warren describes it like this:

In human terms, it’s tough to define Hell. It’s like trying to explain the Internet to an ant.

But Jesus actually talked more about Hell than Heaven. And to read how Jesus — and others in the Bible — described it, we don’t want to have any part of it, and we don’t want anyone we know to have any part in it.

So what does the Bible say about Hell?

  1. It’s a place of torment. Luke 13:28 says that in Hell, “You will cry and be in extreme pain” (GW). We get our visions of fire and agony in Hell from the Bible.
  2. It’s a place of complete separation from God and other people. That’s the worst part of Hell. Go through your whole life saying you don’t want to have anything to do with God, and you’ll eventually get your way. Hell means total separation from God. “If anyone does not love the Lord, let that person be separated from God — lost forever!” (1 Corinthians 16:22a ERV)
  3. It’s a place without love. The Bible tells us that God is love. Without God, we’ll spend forever without his love in Hell. The Bible also says, “There is no fear in love; perfect love drives out all fear” (GNT). What’s it like to live without God’s love? It means you’re scared to death all the time.

Everyone who goes to Hell chooses to do so. They’ll get what they always thought they wanted — a life away from God. You don’t want that! You don’t want Hell.

The Bible says that Hell is place for wicked souls; it is referred to as a fiery furnace, a place of unquenchable fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, constant and eternal torment; there will be no rest; there is condemnation and destruction; you will be eternally separated from God; it is a place of outer darkness; it is a lake of burning sulfur; and there will be eternal suffering. Yet any description we give it, will not compare the just how horrible spending eternity in hell will be.

How do you not spend eternity in hell? By placing your faith and trust in the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. His death on the cross paid your sin debt. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” He died in your place so that you do not have to spend eternity in hell.  In 1974, a movie was made and shown in churches across the country. “The Burning Hell” is a 58 minute film created by the evangelist Estus Pirkle. This film is Pirkle’s interpretation of what the Bible has to say about hell and you can watch it on YouTube here.

Heaven or hell….the choice is yours. Eternity in hell….or eternity in heaven. What is heaven like? A river, clear as crystal, will flow from the throne of God and of the Lamb [Jesus] down the middle of the city. On each side of the river there will be a tree of life, yielding twelve kinds of fruit every month. The streets will be pure gold, like transparent glass. The walls of the city will be adorned with every kind of jewel, emerald, onyx, amethyst, topaz, etc. There will be no need for a sun or moon, and no need for a temple or church. The presence of the Lord will be its light. There will be no sickness or pain, no death, no tears or sorrow.

Just as our human mind cannot accurately envision the horrors of hell, so can we not fully imagine the splendor and glory of heaven. Yes, my friend, God is love and He invites you right now to spend eternity in heaven with him. Romans 10:13 says, “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

“Whosoever” that means you!

If that is your heart’s desire, then you can pray the following prayer:

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”

If you just prayed this prayer, please let us know through the contact us page. You will also want to find an evangelical church and talk with a pastor so that he can lead you through the next steps, being baptized, and growing as a Christian. If you just prayed that prayer, then welcome to the family of God! I look forward to meeting you in Heaven one day.

Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

537264: A Hunger for God: Desiring God Through Fasting and Prayer A Hunger for God: Desiring God Through Fasting and Prayer

His exploration of fasting will help you understand how this ancient biblical practice can nourish your spiritual life and satisfy your longings. 201 pages, softcover from Crossway.

407250: Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We"ve Made Up Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up

By Francis Chan & Preston Sprinkle / David C Cook

In Erasing Hell, Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle take on the topic of hell and our eternal destiny, with a sense of humility and a deep respect for the inspired Word of God. They will address questions such as “Will everyone be saved?” and “Does God Get What He Wants in the End?” as well as reviewing in depth, everything Jesus said about Hell. Chan and Sprinkle lay all the evidence on the table and present all the facts from Scripture, so that people can decide what to believe for themselves.

291089: Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

God still speaks today. His voice and guidance wasn’t only for the saints and prophets of old, but for followers of Jesus now. In Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God, author and pastor Mark Batterson shares seven ways that God communicates with His followers, if they’ll stop to listen. Through the tools of Scripture, Doors, Dreams, People, Promptings, and Pain, God weaves divine messages of love, encouragement and insight, into our lives every day. Hardcover.

Psalm 80:1-7 and 17-19

Dec 23

Listen, Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned on the cherubim, rise up before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Rally Your power and come to save us. Restore us, God; look on us with favor, and we will be saved. Lord God of Hosts, how long will You be angry with Your people’s prayers? You fed them the bread of tears and gave them a full measure of tears to drink. You make us quarrel with our neighbors; our enemies make fun of us. Restore us, God of Hosts; look on us with favor, and we will be saved.

Let Your hand be with the man at Your right hand, with the son of man You have made strong for Yourself. Then we will not turn away from You; revive us, and we will call on Your name. Restore us, Yahweh, the God of Hosts; look on us with favor, and we will be saved.

340591: The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger

By Lee Strobel / Zondervan

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God.

Who was he really? And how can you know for sure?

Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. If Jesus really was God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible evidence, including:

  • Eyewitness Evidence – Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?
  • Scientific Evidence – What does archaeology reveal?
  • Profile Evidence – Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God?
  • Fingerprint Evidence – Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah?

The Case for Christmas invites readers to consider why Christmas matters in the first place. Somewhere beyond the traditions of the holiday lies the truth. This little book is perfect as a gift or for use in ministry during the Christmas season or any other time of the year.

Isaiah 7:10-16. A Sign

Dec 22

Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!” Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings.”

Have you ever asked for God to give you a sign? Maybe you’re trying to make a major decision that will send your life down a different path. Or maybe you feel God calling you to a certain task. Or maybe you just simply are searching for God. There are many reasons why we might ask God to give us a sign. Some say that to do so shows a lack of faith. In some instances that could very well be true and that can be a huge problem is Christianity is 100% dependent upon faith in God and in His only Son, Jesus who became the Savior or the world. The very foundation of Christianity is faith in who Jesus is and the work He did through his birth, life, death, and resurrection.

The main reason why Christians struggle with not having much faith is because we tend to follow what we perceive to be true rather than what we know to be true by faith. The kind of faith that has a complete trust or confidence in someone or something that is built up over time as that person proves himself faithful time and time again. We can build our faith in Christ as we look at the promises of God where He has kept those promises. We can build our faith in Christ as we look at the prophets who foretold pieces of the future that God revealed to them and then see in history where those prophesies occurred. As God inspired the various writers for the books of the Bible, He gave us His own personal testimony of His faithfulness to us. By faith we must believe that Jesus is who He said He is — the promised Messiah and Son of God. By faith we must believe that He lived His entire life without sin. By faith we must believe that through His death on the cross He become the atoning sacrifice for the sins of every person. By faith we must believe that after three days in a tomb, He was raised to life again. By faith we must believe that He ascended into Heaven after 40 days where in that time He appeared to many. By faith we must believe that today, Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father and that He is preparing a place for us in heaven. By faith we place our trust in Jesus as “The Way, the truth and the life.” There is no other way by which we can be saved. Then Jesus gives us His perfect righteousness, making us justified before God.

That’s a whole lot of faith. Often, we live as though we don’t really believe all that we claim to believe and the biggest reason why is we don’t truly know God because we don’t take the time to get to know Him. Just as you would not place your complete faith and trust in a total stranger, if God is more like a stranger to you than a Father, it will be difficult to fully trust Him with complete and total faith in Him. The more intimately you know Him, the easier it becomes to have faith in Him. The only way we get to know Him while in this life is through daily personal Bible study where He reveals Himself to us on every page and through a habit of conversing with Him in prayer. In Romans 10:17, Paul wrote, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” We can certainly learn about God through the sermons we hear at church, but if you really want to seek God with all your heart, you’ll need to open your Bible and begin to study it for yourself.

If you struggle with faith, I want to encourage you through one of the disciples who has become known to us as “doubting Thomas.” When Thomas hear that Jesus had been raised from the dead, he said he would not believe unless he saw Jesus for himself, saw the wounds from the nails in His hands and feet and thrust his hand in Jesus’ side where he had been pierced with a sword. Jesus later appeared again to the disciples and this time Thomas was with them. With love, He walked up to Thomas and let him see with his own eyes, touch the nail scars and showed him His side. Thomas immediately bows and worships Jesus. Jesus said, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29) Others in the Bible also asked for a sign. In Judges 6, Gideon asked God for the sign of the fleece. King Herod was hoping for a sign (Luke 23:8). In Matthew 24, the disciples asked Jesus what sign would precede His coming. And in Isaiah 7, Ahaz is told to ask for a sign – but he would not. A sign was given anyway and that sign was the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah.

Jesus wants each one of us to believe – to have faith. He will meet your level of faith where you are – but He will not leave you there. He will take you to the next step – and then the next. So if you need a sign, like Thomas did, then ask.

However, at the same time, we also need to remember the words of Paul in Hebrews 11:6 where Paul tells us to walk by faith and not by sight. We can ask for a sign for the wrong reason, which is testing God. The scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees often did so to which Jesus responded, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; for just as Jonah was three days and three night in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” (Matthew 12:38-40)

Why does God give signs in some instances and not others? The answer lies within the “why” we ask for a sign. If we ask for a sign because we want to take a shortcut, our “why” is the wrong reason. Often we want to take a shortcut, because we are lazy or we feel that the task is too hard or too long and we want to just skip over to the end. Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14, “For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life.” Most often, shortcuts are dangerous and have consequences. Abraham and Sarah attempted a shortcut to achieve God’s promised son. The consequences of their actions reached across generations. Shortcuts can also lead to poverty (Proverbs 10:14 and Proverbs 21:5) and mistakes (Proverbs 19:2). They can often seem profitable at the moment, but it is always better to do things God’s way. Psalm 37:7 tells us to wait patiently for God to act. In the Message Bible, Matthew 7:13 says, “Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. In Psalm 32:8, God says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Proverbs 37:5 tells us to “commit everything you do to the Lord, Trust him, and he will help you.” Taking shortcuts turns the discovery of God’s will into a scheme that places all the responsibility and work on God. Beware of taking the easy way out.

We also need to be sure that asking for a sign is not a way to ignore what God has already revealed to us as His will because we don’t like what He’s already shown us. We know from God’s Word that we are to give a tithe. So to pray and ask God for a sign that He wants you to tithe would be wrong. We know that God says in His Word that we should not commit adultery. So to ask for a sign from God to see if it’s OK for you to have an affair is wrong. To ask for a sign for anything that contradicts what God has already revealed, is wrong.

If we are asking God for a sign to “test” Him, then it is sin. Deuteronomy 6:16 says, “Do not test the Lord your God.” In Psalm 78, David wrote about Israel’s continued sin, rebelling against God and deliberately testing Him.

We also should not asked for a sign as a means to validate a decision we’ve already made. Balaam did this when he asked God if he could go and curse the Israelites. God’s answer was, “No!” But Balaam didn’t like the answer and prayed again. God did not give Balaam a sign that he was to go, but he went anyway. He had already made up his mind to go before he ever prayed. The act of praying in this case was an attempt to justify the decision that he had already made.  Too often, we jump into something that looks really tempting and then begin to pray and ask God to bless it. Essentially we are asking God to surrender to His will to us rather than us surrendering our will to Him.

Another reason we tend to ask God for a sign is because we want to avoid waiting. Waiting is often a time of feeling powerless, dependent, anxious while knowing we can do nothing – but wait. We we ask for a sign, we are putting ourselves back in control. Let’s say that the sign you ask for is that God would do something by a certain deadline. This means that God needs to respond by our schedule – not his. In their book Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God, Harry Blackaby and Richard King say, “If you do not have clear instructions from God in a matter, pray and wait. Learn patience. Depend on God’s timing. His timing is always right and best. Don’t get in a hurry. He may be withholding directions to cause you to seek Him more intently. Don’t try to skip the relationship to get to the doing.” God is never late. Wait on Him. It will be worth it.

Lastly, we can’t ask for a sign as if God were a genie in a bottle. He is not a good luck charm that keeps us from failure or pain. We can’t use a sign from God as a means to never experiencing problems in life. What we see as success and what God sees as success can often look very different. From the world’s view point, as Jesus died on the cross, the world could say that He failed. But from God’s viewpoint, Jesus was a huge success because Jesus accomplished God’s perfect plan to redeem us and to save us from our sins. God’s plan may include some times of pain and suffering, but there is blessing in obedience.

So is it ever right to ask God for a sign? God wants to develop an intimate and loving relationship with us – and that takes time. Without a relationship with God, Christianity is reduced to a superstitious and shallow practice not any different than when the Israelites worshiped the golden calf. What sets Christianity is part is a relationship based on faith in THE living God. Within that relationship, God may choose to speak to us through His Word, through a friend, through our circumstances, and even through a sign. Asking for a sign after God has already spoken is wrong. But when His will is not clear, there is nothing wrong with asking God to make His will known. He could choose to do so through a sign, but it could also be another way of confirming His will, such as through the pastor’s sermon or through the words of a friend. When we do feel that God has given a sign, we must be cautious because we also know that Satan can do signs. So be sure your recognize God’s voice when He speaks to you. In John 10:27, Jesus said that we hear his voice because He is our Shepherd.

Over and over again in the Bible we can find God giving His people signs. What’s the purpose? So that they would know Him. Why does He give us signs? Because He loves us and He longs to have a relationship based on complete faith in Him. The signs He gives are one way to reveal Himself to us and grow our faith. He doesn’t want to be some mystical being we don’t know. The whole reason He gave the sing in Isaiah 7:10-16 was so we would recognize the Messiah when He came. He loves us and wants us to know Him.

Faith Crisis: What Faith Isn’t and Why It Doesn’t Always Do What You Want – eBook

By Ron Dunn / B&H Books
Many well-meaning Christians misunderstand the role that faith plays in our relationship with God. And because we don’t understand the ways of God, we open ourselves up to losing faith if he doesn’t deliver what we want, when we want it. But the Bible promises that God always rewards real faith. So what, then, is true faith? And how do we tell the difference between truth and a counterfeit faith that is nothing more than false advertising? In Faith Crisis, Ron Dunn guides us through a study of the nature of faith, using Scripture and real-life examples to show what the genuine article looks like, so there’s no mistaking it. You’ll learn that it’s not about quantity but quality, and that the reward of faith is not in blessings, but in experiencing the very presence of God.

Isaiah 7:4 – Be Quiet

by Julia Bruce

Isaiah 7 4

During the days of the prophet Isaiah, the political situation was tense in Jerusalem. In the early 730s B.C. Tiglath-Pileser III, king of Assyria, was busy on his northern frontier. At the same time, Rezin, king of Syria and Pekah, king of Israel, combined forces to withstand the expected attack from Assyria as soon the they were done in the north. Rezin and Pekah wanted Ahaz, king of Judah to join them, but Ahaz wanted nothing to do with them. So Rezin and Pekah plot to remove Ahaz from the throne and put a puppet king on the throne who they would be able to manipulate and control.

Ahaz was contemplating paying the Assyrians to rescue him from Rezin and Pekah but God steps in and sends His prophet Isaiah to deliver a message. God says, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, and say to him: “Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted.” Ahaz had no need to worry. God said that none of what was planned would come to pass and their plans would not stand. Isaiah’s message from God would challenge the king to consider what the source of his trust was: Yahweh or the Assyrians. The All-knowing God was in control and if Ahaz would not trust God, God said he would not be established (vs. 9)

All of us have times where there is a “Rezin and Pekah” breathing down our backs, trying to manipulate us to do what they want. We all have some big, bad “Assyrian King” that wants nothing more than to destroy us, take us captive, or even kill us. Maybe your “Rezin and Pekah” is a co-worker, or even a boss, that wants you to break a company policy. Maybe your “Assyrian King” comes in the form of a politician with a new law he wants to pass or maybe its a diagnosis from a doctor. Whatever threats are in your life, God says, “Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted.” The same All-knowing God that was in control in Ahaz’s life is in control of your life. Isaiah issues the same challenge to you today: Will you trust God? (click to tweet) Will you choose to believe Jeremiah 29:11 that says that God has good plans for us? Even if the threat occurs, we can know that God is in control. He goes before us. He walks beside us. He is there. He is near. He will never leave us or forsake us. So be quiet. Stop worrying. Do not fear. Don’t be fainthearted. God is still on His throne and He has you in the palm of His hand.
