Darkness at the Cross

A Full Solar Eclipse

Have you ever experienced a full solar eclipse? In such an eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking out all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, with the moon completely blocking the sun creating total darkness for about two minutes and forty seconds (nasa.gov). The last time the U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 2017 and the one before was in 1979.

Darkness at Noon

The Bible tells us about another day where it was about noon and darkness covered the land until three in the afternoon because the sun stopped shining. (Luke 23:44-45a) On that day, Jesus Christ hung on a cross, bearing the sins of every person throughout all time. As he bore our sin, God could not look upon his own son as he suffered for you and for me. In that moment, God turned his back on his son.

As a mother with a 25 year old son, there is no way I could ever turn my back on my child and certainly not in his biggest moment of pain and suffering. Yet, God did because he loves you and me enough that no matter what sin we may have committed or currently are involved in, He wanted to have a relationship with us. Our sin, however, keeps us separated from Him because He is Holy. Jesus willingly endured the torture of the cross and willingly gave His life to pay the penalty for our sin.

The wages of sin is death and eternal darkness

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Our sin has consequences and there is a price to be paid for it. Just as you are paid a wage for the work you do each week, God has a paycheck to give you for the sins you commit and that paycheck is…death.

Before sin entered the world, people would not have died. Death is the consequence of sin. But not just physical death. There is also spiritual death in that when you physically die without accepting Jesus a your Savior, you experience eternal darkness, torment, and separation from God in Hell. God never sends a person to hell. Every person that ends up in hell chooses hell by rejecting Jesus. So, if you have not placed your faith in trust in Jesus – you are on your to hell. But don’t panic yet!

Good News! There is an alternative to death and eternal darkness

There is good news! Jesus took payment we earned on himself in our place. Jesus’s death on the cross covered our sin debt and because he died in our place, he is able to offer us the gift of eternal life. If I hold in my hand a beautifully wrapped present and extend my hand to you, how does the gift become yours? It is a gift, because you did nothing to earn it. And if you pay me for it, it ceases to become a gift. There is only one way the gift can become yours. You must reach out and accept it.

It’s your choice as to what you will do with the gift of eternal life and only you can make that choice. Infant baptism or any other kind of baptism can’t save you. Having a father who is preacher won’t get you out of going to hell. You can’t do enough good works to earn your want into heaven. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) He is the way into heaven as we accept the truth about who He is and the truth of our sinfulness. When we accept His free gift, we then experience an abundant and eternal life in His presence in Heaven.

How do you receive the free gift of eternal life and escape death and eternal darkness?

How do you accept the free gift of eternal life? You must receive it by faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith; and it’s not of yourselves: It is the gift of God: not of works, so nobody can boast.”

You begin by acknowledging that you have a sin problem. Romans 3:23 say, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That little word “all, “means you. It means me. It means every single person that has ever lived with the exception of Christ. Because Jesus lived a sinless life, He was able to offer His life in place of ours.

Ephesians 2:1-3 says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.” Deserving of God’s wrath. Our problem is sin.

Our problem is sin, but there is an answer

Like any other problem, there is an answer. Ephesians 2:4-10 gives the answer. “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

The Answer to our Sin Problem is Jesus

The answer to our sin problem is God’s grace extended to us through the death, burial and resurrection of his only son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 tells why God allowed Jesus to die for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” God loves all of us. It doesn’t matter what color skin we have, what our past looks like or what our present life looks like. It doesn’t matter how “big” your sin is because we are the only ones that puts value on sin. To God, a little small sin as just as big as the worst sin you can think of.

Sin is sin and only one sin will keep you from eternal life. But because of his love and grace, he allowed his Son to take the punishment we deserve. The Bible says, “Christ died for our sins…and rose (from the dead) on the third day” (1 Corinthian 15:3,4). “But God showed His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) It also tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:21 that God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin for us so that we can be made righteous in the sight of God and this is what makes eternal life possible.

God’s Extravagant Gift Requires a Response

Just as the only way you could possess a wrapped present from me is to reach out and take it, there also has to be a response from you towards the gift that God offers you. You reach out and accept His gift of eternal life by acknowledging your sin, asking him to forgive you of your sin and placing your faith and trust in Christ alone. Acts16:31 tells us, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” In John 6:47, Jesus said, “Truthfully I say unto you, He that believes on Me has everlasting life.

For Christians, I hope the next time you experience an eclipse it will serve as a reminder to you of what it cost Christ for your gift of eternal life. For non-Christians, I hope you will think of this moment in time when the sun did not shine as Jesus hung on a cross in payment for your sin. As he hung in total darkness, separated from God, so you too are in spiritual darkness and separated from God. Jesus went to the cross so that you could have eternal life with God rather than everlasting separation from God.

You Can Receive God’s Free Gift Right Now

If you wish to accept the free gift of eternal life right now, you can simply pray the prayer below with a sincere heart and God will hear you.

“Dear Lord, I know that I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. Right now, in this moment, I trust you as my Savior. I believe that you died for me and rose from the dead as payment for my sins. I accept your free gift of eternal life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

If you prayed that prayer, let us know in the comment sections or send us a note through the contact us page. Also, find a local evangelical church in your area and talk with the pastor and let him know of the decision you have made. He can then help you as you follow in obedience to God and grow as a Christian.

Our Newest Download! The Path to Sin Worksheet

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. Download the worksheet today.

It is Finished

“It is finished.” Some of the most exciting words ever said. Whether it’s a child who just finished a test, an artist who just finished their best painting, an author who just finished a book, a housewife who finished all the laundry (until tomorrow), an engineer who finished a complex and difficult project, or Jesus who accomplished all that God sent Him to do.

Because Jesus finished what His Father sent Him to do…

  • we can can be redeemed.
  • sin no longer holds us in bondage.
  • we are washed in the blood of the Lamb
  • Satan is defeated.
  • we can have eternal life.
  • we are sanctified, justified, and have an eternal hope.

Christ’s Finished Work is His Free Gift to Us

Everyone loves infomercials – right? Don’t you just love it when they say you get a “free gift” with the purchase of something else? Or you get a free gift, but you have to pay for the shipping? Marketing’s definition of “free gift” and mine are very different. If something is free, then I don’t have to pay for it or earn it. Because it is a gift, I only have to reach out an accept it from whomever is gifting it.

Jesus willingly stood in my place and laid down his life as the payment for my sins and yours. Therefore, He offers each us the free gift of eternal life. And above all, there are no strings attached. You don’t have to do something else to get it. Nor is there any need to pay for shipping. You just have to reach out by faith and accept His gift to you. For every single human who ever lived, when Jesus cried, “It is finished” from the cross, it was for you.

The Battle for Redemption of Man

God sent Jesus into our world for the sole purpose of bringing redemption and eternal life to all those who believe on Him and Jesus carried out every single detail of God’s plan. At just the right moment in time, Jesus arrived in our world as an infant, leaving the splendor of heaven for a dirty cattle stall. Then, He lived and grew up in our world as part of a poor family. He had no splendor or grandeur on earth. As a man of 30 years old, he called the 12 disciples and began his earthly ministry, teaching them and the people about who He was.

The Jews had all the prophecies throughout the scriptures and Jesus fulfilled everyone of them. And yet, many didn’t believe He was the Messiah. They called Him a blasphemer and for that, they had Him put to death. He was betrayed by one of His own disciples – but because Jesus is God, he knew even when He called Judas as a disciple that Judas would betray him – yet He called Him anyway. And, as Jesus hung on the cross the battle for our redemption was raging. With his final words, “It is finished,” the battle was won. Satan was defeated. The sacrificial payment for our sin was done.

As Jesus hung on the cross the battle for our redemption was raging. With his final words, “It is finished,” the battle was won. The sacrificial payment for our sin was done.

Free Gift! Eternal Life

For each one of us, created in His image, he knew that before we were created that our sin would cause Him to go to the cross – but he created us anyway. With all of His work done, as He hung on the cross, he cried out, “It is finished.” He had accomplished everything God sent Him here to do. So he bowed His head and willingly released His spirit. Then…three days later….He rose from the dead, conquering death. Defeating the grave. Raised to life. Because of His finished work, those who believe and accept Him by faith as their Savior, have received His free gift of eternal life.

How do we accept Christ’s free gift? By faith

2 Peter 3:9. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

God doesn’t want anyone to go to hell. We are all His uniquely, hand-crafted creation. He loved us so much that He made a way so we would not have to pay the price for our sin. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. If the wages of sin is death, than someone has to pay those wages. That is what Jesus did on the cross. He paid the price for our sins. The way we accept His gift is by faith. We can’t earn it. It’s impossible to live a “good enough” life. Nor can we pay enough money to the church and purchase it. It is only by faith. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” There are three steps to accepting Christ as your Savior by faith:

Three steps to accepting Christ as your Savior by Faith

  • Admit that you are a sinner, lost and on the way to hell. Romans 3:23 – “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
  • Believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Acts 16:31 – “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and Thou shalt be saved.”
  • Confess
    • your sins and seek His forgiveness. 1 John 1:9. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
    • accept Him by faith ask Him to be your Savior. Romans 10:9 – “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

The Angels Rejoice Over Every Redeemed Person

If you just accepted Christ’s free gift by faith, then you too can victoriously say, “It is finished!” The Battle for you is over! Right now, all of heaven is rejoicing – just for you! Luke 15:10 tells us, “there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.”

It is finished! He is crowned King of king and Lord of lords.

Luke 16:24 – Hell is Real

April 18 Luke 16 24 KJV

Hell is real. Matthew 13:50 describes hell as a “blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Revelation 21:8 says it’s a fiery lake of burning sulfur. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 says that those in hell will be shut out from the presence of the Lord. Mark 9:48 says that in hell the worm never dies and the flame is not quenched. Hell was originally for Satan and the fallen angels that followed him in the revolt against God. However, Revelation 21:8 says that the unbelievers, vile, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars will share hell with Satan and his demons.

In Luke 16, we find Jesus telling the story about the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man every luxury in life, while Lazarus was poor and sick, a beggar who laid at the gate of the rich man covered in sores and begged for the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. When they both died, the rich man found himself in hell and Lazarus was carried by the angels into heaven.

The good news is that heaven is a real place too. In Revelation 22:1-5, we find that God gave John a glimpse of heaven. John wrote: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever” John also wrote in Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Then in verses 21-25, “And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.”

There is only one way into hell and one way into heaven. The entrance to hell is rejecting Christ as Savior. The entrance to heaven is by faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. There is no making a choice after death – the decision must be made in this life. It begins with recognizing our sin and need for a Savior and an understanding that salvation is about what God has done for us. There is nothing we can do to earn salvation. We were the ones that failed God when we sin, yet God is the one who made a plan to redeem us by sending His only Son to earth to take our punishment in our place. Each and every one of us are sinners. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” It is sin that makes us in need of a Savior. It is sin that separates us from God. Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death. That wage or penalty was paid when Jesus came to earth, died on a cross, was buried in a tomb and then three days later rose from the dead. He bore our sins and accepted the consequences that we deserve. In order for us to be saved, we must “believe in the Lord Jesus” (Acts 16:31). God has already done all the work. All we have to do is receive, by faith, the gift of salvation that God offers. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

God doesn’t want anyone to go to hell. If a person ends up there, they do so by rejecting God’s grace and gift of salvation (Romans 6:23). Today, God is offering you salvation as a gift – all you have to do is reach out and accept it. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” When we believe in the Lord Jesus it means that we put our faith and trust in what He did to provide our way of salvation. Therefore it is more than just knowing about Jesus. We must also act on the knowledge through our faith and trust in Him.

If you are ready to accept Him as your Savior, then pray right now:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and Savior.

If you prayed that prayer and meant it with all your heart, then you have been saved and are now a child of God. Follow up with a pastor at a local evangelical church and he can help you take the next steps in your Christian journey and help you grow in your new faith. Welcome to the family of God!

God, thank you for your free gift of salvation that gives us eternal life in heaven with you. We pray for those who are lost that they may choose to place their faith in Jesus.

Free Gift

Salvation FREE

Genesis 3:7-8 – And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. (KJV)

Sin…it’s just a little word but it has huge consequences. Adam and Eve were only given one “do not” rule….and they broke it. The Bible tells us that after eating of the tree God told them not to eat from, their eyes were opened and they knew that they were naked. The very instant they sinned they knew they were naked. God didn’t have to tell them. They knew. They knew their sin had left them exposed.

Like most of us, their first reaction was not to call out to God and say, “God, I mess up. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” No, instead they tried to cover things up. They sewed fig leaves together to hide their nakedness and then when God came to visit…they hid. Isn’t that what we do when we know we’re guilty of something? Try to hide it, cover it up?

From that moment until now, sin has left us all exposed. Exposed to the consequences of sin. For some that might be poor health due to bad eating and exercise habits. For some it might be legal consequences due to bad life decisions. For some it might be a poor relationship with God because we’ve put other things at a higher priority than God. For some it might be a failed marriage because other things were more important than your spouse. Some might experience job loss because laziness, theft or poor work attendance. No matter what the sin is, it comes with consequences and every sin has the consequence of being separated from God.  Every sin has a consequence…a penalty that has to be paid. Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The penalty we pay for sin is death. Eternal separation from God.

Adam and Eve get a bad rap for being the first sinners, but we are just like them. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That little word “all” means me and you. Like Adam and Eve, we tend to hide ourselves from the presence of God. We stop going to church. We say there is no God. We stop spending time with Him on a daily basis. We stop reading the Bible and praying. We get angry at God because of the consequences of sin. We turn our backs on Him so that we can live whatever life we want… and yet… the feelings of guilt and shame haunt us.

sin leaves us exposedWhile sin leaves us exposed, God stands read to clothe us in His righteousness. That means we don’t have to continue to live with guilt and shame. 1 John 1:9 tells us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross and His resurrection, we can be made new because His blood washes away all our sin. Jesus paid the penalty for us. You are never too far gone for Jesus to cleanse you too. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.” You can’t earn it. You can never be good enough. Isaiah 64:6 says, “All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind.” Even if we based our most righteous act in our entire life, it wouldn’t be good enough to gain salvation.  But the good news is salvation isn’t dependent on being good enough. And that’s good news because it means that we can come to God just as we are. We don’t have to get “cleaned up” first. In fact, it’s God’s job to clean us. And we become clean when we place our faith in God and the finished work of His Son, Jesus Christ who paid the penalty of sin for us. God offers it to each one of us as a free gift, unearned, unmerited, undeserved…FREE. You can’t buy it, earn it, or work for it. You can never be good enough on your own. It comes only through confessing your sins to God, asking for forgiveness, admitting your need for Him, and placing your faith and trust in Him.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. –John 3:16

“But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” — Romans 5:8

“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” — Romans 10:9-10

“For whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  — Romans 10:13

Whoever…that means you.

What will you do…live in guilt and shame or run to the open arms of Jesus, confessing your sins to him? Will you place your faith in Jesus, take Him at His word? With your whole heart, will you believe that Jesus is God’s Son who died for you, paying your penalty of son in your place? Will you give Him first place in your life, making Him your Lord? If your answer is yes, don’t wait another minute. Acknowledge to God that you are a sinner and confess Him as your Lord and Savior.

Call on Him now. He’s waiting for you.
