Eternal Ramification of Sin

Sin – A Little Word with Big Ramifications

Sin. It’s just a small three-lettered word, but it has big eternal ramifications. God knew even before he created humans that they would sin.  He also knew that it would cost His only Son His life so that we could be reconciled and redeemed into a right relationship with Him.  Yet still, he created us with free-will. No one wants someone to love them because they were forced to or have no choice in the matter. That isn’t even love. God gifted us with freedom. Freedom to think. Freedom of conscience. And even freedom to disobey His commands. The choice is ours.

Before there was Sin

For a moment, go imagineering with me. In your mind, picture the perfect Garden of Eden. It’s peaceful there. Birds sing their song of praise to their creator. You have the perfect husband (not to mention, the only man around). The skies are blue, the trees are green. The temperature is perfect. There are no fears or anxiety of any kind. You don’t have to worry about bills or currency, because God has supplied you with everything you need.

When you sleep, the stars twinkle in the sky and there’s the relaxing sound of a waterfall that lulls you to sleep. Fruit and vegetables are in abundance and you can just walk right up and pluck off a big juicy apply or some grapes or strawberries, whenever you want. For pets, you have some horses, dogs, cats, birds, and even some hippos, rhinos, cheetahs, and a big cat you husband called a lion. By the lake, you play with the beavers. Down by the beach, a playful dolphin comes to see you every day. At the end of every day, God comes to walk and talk with you in the garden.

Life can’t get much better. Except….there’s that one tree over there. God said not to eat it. As Eve plops a grape in her mouth, the sun glistens off the fruit of the tree and it really looks good.

Enter “Serpent” Stage Right

I imagine that somewhere in the Garden a little serpent had been eyeing and watching this new creation of God’s – just waiting for the right moment. Maybe – just to be close to her – it endeared itself to her and allowed her to think it was a pet like all the other animals God has created. The serpent noticed how her eye lingered on the fruit. He watched as the thoughts flickered through her mind and he chose that moment to open his mouth and speak. Sin always begins in the mind where imagination and feelings make it seem pleasing for the moment.

A Talking Serpent?

Have you ever wondered how much time passed between the creation of Eve the moment that everything changes for man? If Eve was still rather new to the world, then her interaction with the serpent takes on a different look than if she had been around the Garden for a few years. No where in the creation account does it indicated that animals could talk – so why does the Bible not portray any fear or shock on Eve’s part that a serpent is talking to her? Did they have the ability to talk prior to God cursing them? If Eve was still new to the Garden, then maybe she didn’t know that animals aren’t supposed to go around talking. But, if she were still new – then where is Adam and why isn’t he watching out for her?

The Bible makes it seem as if Eve is not surprised in any way that a serpent is talking to her and it doesn’t tell us where Adam is during this encounter between Eve and the serpent. Just as the serpent watched and waited for the perfect moment with Eve, he also waited for a moment when Adam either wasn’t around or was distracted in some way.

Lessons from Eve’s Mistakes

Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we all live with a sin nature and there are consequences to our sin. But there are some things we can learn about how Satan tempts us so that we can recognize Satan at work and flee from temptation.

Looking at what she couldn’t have

Eve’s first mistake was standing around looking at that one thing she couldn’t have. If you’ve ever tried to diet, you know what I’m saying. Pizza never looks or smells better than when you’re trying to lose weight! There is something about not being able to have something that makes you want it – really want it.  When you notice you are craving something you shouldn’t have, its a good time to get up and walk away. But Eve hung out there by the tree – not satisfied with every other fruit and vegetable God had given. She wanted that one that was glistening in the sun and looked so very good to eat. In Genesis 3:6, Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes.

A Conversation with the serpent

Her second mistake was standing around having a conversation with the serpent. Satan tempted her further and told her it would make her wise…and it did. Wise to guilt, shame, and nakedness. Satan didn’t lie to her. He just didn’t tell her the negative side of the truth.

Temptation always works the same way

Down through the ages every temptation and every sin works the same way. There is an attraction to it, followed by a conflict of the mind where a decision has to be made. The decision to give in to the sin or to turn away and choose obedience to God. The end result of sin is that it always leaves us exposed. Exposed to suffering and sorrow, guilt and shame. Exposed to the consequences that follow. Sin leaves us exposed to broken relationships with others and with God.

Flee from temptation

When temptation comes calling, don’t stand around admiring it or having a conversation with it. Don’t make it your pet. Start quoting scripture and turn away from it. If your craving something that you are not supposed to have, start praising God for all He has given you and trust that in His omniscient wisdom, knowing He is a God who only gives good gifts, that He will supply your every need at just the right moment in time.

Sin always leaves you exposed. Obedience to God always leads to blessing.

Matthew 7:7. Ask. Seek. Knock.

Jan 8 Matthew 7 7

Do you remember as a kid when you wanted something you’d ask your parents for it over and over and over again? Usually until with full exasperation they reply with, “If you ask me just one more time, I’ll…” How persistent are you when you are praying and asking God for something? God never gets tired of us asking Him to meet our needs.

Matthew 7:7 tell us to “ask” but it doesn’t mean that He will just give us everything we want. When we approach God with this mindset we reduce the God of the universe down to a magical genie that grants our every wish. Yet, this is what prosperity preachers would want you to believe. Just name it and claim it – in Jesus’ name, of course. But Matthew 7:7 is not intended to be interpreted as God will give us whatever we ask for. This is why its followed with “seek.” If we are seeking God’s will, then we will know what we should ask for. If you don’t know His will, then start by asking for to know it before you ask Him to give you other things. In verse 11, Jesus said that God will not fail to give His children good things, and we must trust Him that He knows what’s good for us in this moment of time. Sometimes what we ask for is a good thing, but now is not the right time.

You see, God, in his omniscience, knows what we need and what we do not and He knows the exact moment in time when that good thing becomes a best thing. He’s never late. Sometimes, what we ask for He knows is not in our best interest and therefore He doesn’t give it to us.

So then, what about asking “in Jesus’ name?” John 14:14 says, ” You many ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”  When we pray in Jesus’ name, we are praying on the basis of His authority and who He is – the Son of God, Creator of the world. But if we pray in His authority, then we’ve already sought His will. 1 John 5:14 says, “If we ask anything according to His will, he hears us.” So we need to be sure that what we are asking for is in His will.

Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” The promise is that He will supply all our needs. Sometimes, He provides extra blessings and gives us our wants too. However, if what you are asking for is a need and aligns with His purpose  for our lives, keep praying. Be persistent. When we get to heaven, I wonder how many blessings we will have missed out on simply because we stopped praying one prayer too soon. If God doesn’t provide, than know that he has something better in mind. It reminds me of a picture circulating around on Facebook where Jesus is holding out his hand to a little girl asking her to give him her teddy bear. She hangs on to the little bear as tightly as she can, not wanting to give it up, but what she can’t see is the great big teddy bear Jesus has behind His back. God only wants what is absolutely best for us…so trust Him. Be persistent in prayer until He gives you an answer. If the answer is no, then trust Him that he has something better waiting that you can’t see yet.

453542: Humility Humility

By Andrew Murray / Aneko Press

639405: Humility & Absolute Surrender Humility & Absolute Surrender

By Andrew Murray / Hendrickson Publishers

For over a century countless readers have found in Andrew Murray a trustworthy guide to the deeper Christian life. As a pastor, evangelist, educator, and writer driven by concern for the spiritual guidance of new converts–and for revival in long-time believers–Murray penned some of the most enduring devotional classics of Christian literature. Though he ministered in a deeply-divided nation, his vision seemed blind to race, class, or political persuasion. And from a remote corner of South Africa, his preaching, teaching, and writing would eventually fuel spiritual awakening with a worldwide impact.

This edition pairs Humility and Absolute Surrender in one volume. Together these classics reflect Murray’s longing for a closer walk with Christ, and call us to a life of holiness and virtue, empowered not by our own strength but by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Hardcover.

25600: Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness, Updated Edition Humility: The Journey Toward Holiness, Updated Edition

By Andrew Murray / Bethany House

When Jesus “made himself nothing … taking the nature of a servant,” He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray calls this “our true nobility” and “the distinguishing feature of discipleship.” In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ’s life, underscoring the utmost need for humility—as opposed to pride—in the Christian’s life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written, this edition has been edited for today’s reader.

904379: From Pride to Humility: A Biblical Perspective From Pride to Humility: A Biblical Perspective

By Stuart Scott / Focus Publishing

God has given us a model to follow, in order to be what he wants us to be, and that model is the person Jesus Christ. We must first want to glorify God with our lives and realize that it is Christ likeness that will help us to do that. The humility of Jesus Christ is his most stunning attribute, and the sin of pride is probably the most detestable to God. Pride is a form of self-worship and is often manifested in the most subtle ways.

Contained in this small volume is an exhaustive list of manifestations of pride, which we must put-off, followed by the challenging attributes of humility, which Christians can put on through the spirit.

Genesis 3:7. Eternal Ramifications of Sin

Genesis 3 7

Sin always begins in the mind where imagination and feelings make it seem pleasing for the moment.

Just as the serpent watched and waited for the perfect moment with Eve, he also waited for a moment when Adam wasn’t around.

Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we all live with a sin nature and there are consequences to our sin. But there are some things we can learn about how Satan tempts us so that we can recognize Satan at work and flee from temptation.

Her second mistake was standing around having a conversation with the serpent. Satan tempted her further and told her it would make her wise…and it did. Wise to guilt, shame, and nakedness. Satan didn’t lie to her. He just didn’t tell her the negative side of the truth.

Exposed to broken relationship with others and with God.

Sin always lives you exposed. Obedience to God always leads to blessing.

  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. 776585: Letters to the Church Letters to the Church

By Francis Chan / David C Cook

If God had it His way, what would our churches look like?

In his most powerful book yet, Pastor Francis Chan digs deep into biblical truths, reflections on his own failures and dreams, and stories of ordinary people God is using to change the world.

As Chan says, “We’ve strayed so far from what God calls Church. We all know it. We know that what we’re experiencing is radically different from the Church in Scripture. For decades, church leaders like myself have lost sight of the inherent mystery of the Church. We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It’s time for that to change.”

When Jesus returns, will He find us caring for His Bride-even more than for our own lives? Letters to the Church reminds us of how powerful, how glorious the Church once was … and calls us to once again be the Church God intended us to be.

Bonus Videos: The 4 videos from Francis Chan’s BASIC Study series (Fellowship, Communion, Teaching, Prayer) are included here as additional material for you to feel free to use in your church. They are not part of the “Letters to the Church” series.

291119: Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It. Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It.

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

New York Times bestselling author and pastor Mark Batterson believes the key to radically increasing your faith, joy, and abundance can be found in these three words:

Flip the blessing.

His discovery started with a simple experiment. Whenever he received a blessing, he would give a similar blessing away. If someone paid him a compliment or gave him a gift or went out of their way to help him, he would return the favor by doing something similar for someone else.

We flip the blessing by blessing others in the way God has blessed us. That’s how the blessing becomes a double blessing. It turns giving into a game–one we can’t win because God will always outgive us! It’s an ancient truth found within the Abrahamic covenant: “I will bless you…and you will be a blessing.”

In other words, we are blessed to bless. In a day and age where the idea of blessing has been reduced to a hashtag (#blessed), Batteron challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing. Don’t settle for half of what God offers. Discover how you can both get it and give it.

Matthew 7:7

Jan 8 Matthew 7 7.png

Do you remember as a kid when you wanted something how many times you’d ask your parents for it? Usually until with full exasperation they reply with, “If you ask me just one more time, I’ll…” How persistent are you when you are praying and asking God for something? God never gets tired of us asking Him to meet our needs. It doesn’t mean that He will just give us everything we want. This verse is not intended to be interpreted as God will give us whatever we ask for. God, in his omniscience, knows what we need and what we do not. Sometimes, what we ask for He knows is not in our best interest and therefore He doesn’t give it to us. She hangs on to the little bear as tightly as she can, not wanting to give it up, but what she can’t see is the big teddy bear Jesus has behind His back. God only wants what is absolutely best for us…so trust Him. Be persistent in prayer until He gives you an answer. If the answer is no, then trust Him that he has something better waiting that you can’t see yet.

Genesis 3:7

Genesis 3 7

Sin. A small three-lettered word that has eternal ramifications.

Sin always begins in the mind where imagination and feelings make it seem pleasing for the moment. Eve’s first mistake was standing around having a conversation with the serpent. In Genesis 3:6, Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes. Satan tempted her further and told her it would make her wise…and it did. Wise to guilt, shame, and nakedness. Down through the ages every temptation and every sin works the same way. There is an attraction to it, followed by a conflict of the mind where a decision is made. The decision to give in to the sin or to turn away and choose obedience to God. The end result of sin is that it always leaves us exposed. Exposed to suffering and sorrow, guilt and shame. Exposed to the consequences that follow. Exposed to broken relationship with others and with God.

When temptation comes calling, don’t stand around having a conversation with it. Start quoting scripture and turn away from it. Obedience to God is always best.
