Eternal Ramification of Sin

Sin – A Little Word with Big Ramifications

Sin. It’s just a small three-lettered word, but it has big eternal ramifications. God knew even before he created humans that they would sin.  He also knew that it would cost His only Son His life so that we could be reconciled and redeemed into a right relationship with Him.  Yet still, he created us with free-will. No one wants someone to love them because they were forced to or have no choice in the matter. That isn’t even love. God gifted us with freedom. Freedom to think. Freedom of conscience. And even freedom to disobey His commands. The choice is ours.

Before there was Sin

For a moment, go imagineering with me. In your mind, picture the perfect Garden of Eden. It’s peaceful there. Birds sing their song of praise to their creator. You have the perfect husband (not to mention, the only man around). The skies are blue, the trees are green. The temperature is perfect. There are no fears or anxiety of any kind. You don’t have to worry about bills or currency, because God has supplied you with everything you need.

When you sleep, the stars twinkle in the sky and there’s the relaxing sound of a waterfall that lulls you to sleep. Fruit and vegetables are in abundance and you can just walk right up and pluck off a big juicy apply or some grapes or strawberries, whenever you want. For pets, you have some horses, dogs, cats, birds, and even some hippos, rhinos, cheetahs, and a big cat you husband called a lion. By the lake, you play with the beavers. Down by the beach, a playful dolphin comes to see you every day. At the end of every day, God comes to walk and talk with you in the garden.

Life can’t get much better. Except….there’s that one tree over there. God said not to eat it. As Eve plops a grape in her mouth, the sun glistens off the fruit of the tree and it really looks good.

Enter “Serpent” Stage Right

I imagine that somewhere in the Garden a little serpent had been eyeing and watching this new creation of God’s – just waiting for the right moment. Maybe – just to be close to her – it endeared itself to her and allowed her to think it was a pet like all the other animals God has created. The serpent noticed how her eye lingered on the fruit. He watched as the thoughts flickered through her mind and he chose that moment to open his mouth and speak. Sin always begins in the mind where imagination and feelings make it seem pleasing for the moment.

A Talking Serpent?

Have you ever wondered how much time passed between the creation of Eve the moment that everything changes for man? If Eve was still rather new to the world, then her interaction with the serpent takes on a different look than if she had been around the Garden for a few years. No where in the creation account does it indicate that animals could talk – so why does the Bible not portray any fear or shock on Eve’s part that a serpent is talking to her? Did they have the ability to talk prior to God cursing them? If Eve was still new to the Garden, then maybe she didn’t know that animals aren’t supposed to go around talking. But, if she were still new – then where is Adam and why isn’t he watching out for her?

The Bible makes it seem as if Eve is not surprised in any way that a serpent is talking to her and it doesn’t tell us where Adam is during this encounter between Eve and the serpent. Just as the serpent watched and waited for the perfect moment with Eve, he also waited for a moment when Adam either wasn’t around or was distracted in some way.

Lessons from Eve’s Mistakes

Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, we all live with a sin nature and there are consequences to our sin. But there are some things we can learn about how Satan tempts us so that we can recognize Satan at work and flee from temptation.

Looking at what she couldn’t have

Eve’s first mistake was standing around looking at that one thing she couldn’t have. If you’ve ever tried to diet, you know what I’m saying. Pizza never looks or smells better than when you’re trying to lose weight! There is something about not being able to have something that makes you want it – really want it.  When you notice you are craving something you shouldn’t have, its a good time to get up and walk away. But Eve hung out there by the tree – not satisfied with every other fruit and vegetable God had given. She wanted that one that was glistening in the sun and looked so very good to eat. In Genesis 3:6, Eve saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes.

A Conversation with the serpent

Her second mistake was standing around having a conversation with the serpent. Satan tempted her further and told her it would make her wise…and it did. Wise to guilt, shame, and nakedness. Satan didn’t lie to her. He just didn’t tell her the negative side of the truth.

Temptation always works the same way

Down through the ages every temptation and every sin works the same way. There is an attraction to it, followed by a conflict of the mind where a decision has to be made. The decision to give in to the sin or to turn away and choose obedience to God. The end result of sin is that it always leaves us exposed. Exposed to suffering and sorrow, guilt and shame. Exposed to the consequences that follow. Sin leaves us exposed to broken relationships with others and with God.

James 1:14-15, explains the path to sin this way: “But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.” Every one of us face temptations every day. And temptation begins in the mind when Satan drops the bait. We are lured and enticed by the perfect bait: our own desires and we sniff out the bait of our desires and are instantly attracted to it. We nurture the desire, think about it, dwell on it. Then temptation gives birth to sin as we yield to the temptation and act on the desire as we fall into sin. Finally, Sin brings the consequences of our choices: spiritual death and separation from God.

The eternal ramification of sin is an eternity in hell. But there is hope! Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Our hope was born in a stable and placed in a manger. He lived a sinless life and died on a cross to pay the price for our sins and then He rose from the dead, defeating Satan and becoming our Redeemer. Because of Jesus, we have hope.

Flee from temptation

When temptation comes calling, don’t stand around admiring it or having a conversation with it. Don’t make it your pet. Start quoting scripture and turn away from it. This is why memorizing Scripture is so important. In Paul’s description of the Armor of God, the Bible is our sword. So have your sword ready and sharpened by hiding it in your heart so you are able to use it at the moment of attack.

If your craving something that you are not supposed to have, start praising God for all He has given you and trust that in His omniscient wisdom, knowing He is a God who only gives good gifts, that He will supply your every need at just the right moment in time.

If you do fall into the trap of sin, be quick to repent and seek God’s forgiveness.

Sin always leaves you exposed. Obedience to God always leads to blessing.

Is this trial a test from God or an attack from Satan?

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

Satan is not God’s opposite. God is sovereign in every way and is in complete control over everything, including Satan and any trial that we go through in life. Anything Satan does, God allows. God is eternal; Satan is a created being and will be thrown into the lake of fire for eternity at the appointed time (Revelations 20:10). God and Satan are not in a cosmic battle for power. God is already the winner. However, God in his sovereignty has ordained that Satan have some control over the earth to tempt people. As 1 John 5:19 states, “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

As we learned in Chapter 1, Jesus is the Vine and we are the branches. It is from the Vine that the branches receive life, but at the same time the branches need pruning in order to be more fruitful and sometimes the method of pruning that God uses is through a trial. However, during the trial, we feel the effects just as much as if Satan is attacking us. So how do we know if the battlefield we are on is a test or an attack?

To answer this question, we must understand the character of God and the character of Satan. John 10:10 will help shed some light. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” God will use a trial in our life to test our faith and bring about spiritual growth and life. Satan is the thief that comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. Satan uses a trial in an attempt to remove God from our lives.

Let’s look at 4 questions we can ask ourselves when faced with a trial so we can determine if we are being tested by God or attacked by Satan.

Question 1: Is this trial a test or temptation?

Whether tested or tempted, in both situations, we will experience feelings and thoughts that are similar. So, we must go back to the truth of God’s Word. If we have hidden it in our hearts, it will be there to guide us and help us discern if God is testing us or Satan is attacking us.

While God does not tempt us, He does actively cause or allow tests to occur in the believer’s life. When God is working to strengthen our faith, His end goal is to allow questions, feelings, and thoughts that will lead to our ultimate trust in Him. In Genesis 22:1-24 God tested Abraham. In John 6:5-7 Jesus tested Philip. And in 1 Peter 1 we are told that God has called us to be born again to a living hope, but during our time on earth we will experience trials, “so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:7).

On the other hand, Satan certainly does tempt people, including Jesus. Luke 4:1-2 says, “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.” A temptation will lead a believer to a place of loneliness, despair, and ultimately leave all responsibility in your own hands.

Counting the trial as joy

James 1:2-5 says, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Then in verse 13, James writes, “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.”

You can determine if a trial is a test from God or a temptation from Satan by the pull it is having on you. If you are being tempted to indulge in sinful, unbiblical behavior, this is Satan trying to attack you. But if you are being encouraged to remain faithful to God through a test in your life that is resulting in more praise, glory, and honor given to Jesus Christ, this is a test from the Lord. Remember testing equals: waiting, watching, and surrendering all to Him. Attacks equal: leaving Him and relying on your methods to remedy the situation.

Questions 2: Does the trial make me feel conviction or condemnation?

The feelings evoked when we sin can also be a clue as to whether the trial, we are going through is a test form God or an attack of Satan. When Satan is successful in getting us to fall to temptation and sin, he then works to make us feel condemned. He not only wants you to sin, but he also wants you to feel that God now hates you because of your sin. He wants you to feel like you have failed God, the ministry in which you serve, and the people that you serve. But remember that this is one of his “identity crisis wiles” and recognize it for what it is. Such thoughts are lies straight from the mouth of Satan. The only person condemned, is the one who remains lost in his sins.

As a child or God, He loves you no matter what you do. He 1 John 4:8 states, “God is love.” His love is unconditional because his love is based who He is. Love is His nature and character. Therefore, it is impossible for His love to be based on our choices and actions. However, we must not mistake God’s unconditional love for us with a freedom to unconditionally sin. God will not ignore our sins because he loves us. Rather, he will convict us of our sin because he loves us and wants us to receive the grace offered through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Christians are no longer condemned

If you are a Christian, you will never be condemned for your sin ever again. Romans 8:1 explains, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Condemnation is when you are sentenced to death for your wrongs. But, in love, God does convict his people, which is when the Holy Spirit points out a sin in your life so that you will be motivated to turn back to God in repentance. As 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 says, “As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”

Question 3: Is this trial bringing order into my life or creating chaos?

Let’s face it: Sometimes we need something to motivate us so we can move from where we are now to where God wants us to be. No one likes to experiences pressures and troubles, but when we go through a trial, it often serves as a means to overcome barriers that prevent us from growing. As we wrestle through doubts, searching for answers in God’s Word, we grow in faith and we learn new facets about who God is. When a problem becomes urgent enough that we can no longer ignore it, God will use it to illuminate the disorganized areas of our lives and then bring them into order.

The Corinthian church is a good example of God using a trial to bring order. Paul tells us the church was experiencing problems because they did not know how to properly use their spiritual gifts of prophecy and tongues. Paul then provides explanations of the gifts in 1 Corinthians 14. And in verse 33, Paul writes, “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” Since that time, God has used the confusion of the Corinthian church for clarity throughout the body of Christ.

However, when a trial is being used for Satan’s purposes, order falls by the wayside and chaos develops. James 3:14-16 says, “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”

Questions 4: Is your trial drawing you to God or pulling you away from God?

God will always use the trails we face as instruments in drawing us into a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. But Satan wants nothing more than to steal your joy and destroy your relationship with God. Because God is always in control, He can use the trials that Satan brings in our lives to cause use to seek to know God more and how God will use the trial for our good and His glory.

Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 how God used Satan’s attack on Paul to draw Paul closer to God. Paul writes, “So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Is this trial a test or an attack?

So, if the pressure and trouble you are facing tests your faith, convicts of sin, brings order into your life, or draws you to God, then God is testing you. But if your circumstances look more like a temptation to sin, makes you feel condemned, stirs up chaos, or pulls you away from God, then it is Satan who at work in your life.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. What does the Bible tell us about Satan?

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

In Monday’s post, we discovered that ministry is dangerous because there are pressures and trouble. We also saw in yesterday’s post that we have an adversary who works through wiles and schemes to trip us up and make us ineffective in the ministry or even to get us to quit. Now that we understand the “wiles of the devil,” let’s turn our attention to Satan himself and see what the Bible tells us about our adversary.

Be watchful! Satan is looking for someone to devour!

The Bible tells us much about this enemy and his cohorts. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us that Satan is an adversary and that we should be watchful because he prowls around like a roaring lion just looking for someone he can devour. When we are not anchored in the Word, spending time in prayer, exhausted, overwhelmed, ill, or too busy to pay attention to his trickery, we make it easy for him to devour us.

Yes, he prowls, and he often disguises himself. 2 Corinthians 11:14 says he describes himself as an angel of light. It isn’t very hard to figure out that it is much less scary to encounter an angel of light than a dark, terrifying demon. But if he can disguise himself to Christians and confuse them, he has a chance to win another round on the spiritual battlefield.

John 8:44 calls him a murderer. This same verse calls him the father of lies, saying there is no truth in him.

Hebrews 2:14 says he holds the power of death.

1 John 5:19 says that the whole world lies in his power.

Ezekiel 28:17 says that his heart was proud because of his beauty and that he corrupted wisdom.

In the book of Job, we find that he roams the earth from one end to the other and comes before God looking for permission to test and try us.

Revelation 12:10 calls him our accuser and in Ephesians 6:16 we learn that he has fiery darts. And when he steps up for a game of darts, we (Christians) become his bullseye.[1]

Satan uses us for target practice

For those of us who serve in any type of ministry capacity, we are even bigger targets. Because we are recruiting more soldiers for the Lord’s army, Satan’s biggest desire is to trip us up. He wants nothing more than to see us stumble because we help Christians grow and mature who then find their calling and begin to serve in some compacity. If he can use his wiles to make us think that what we do for the kingdom of God doesn’t make a difference, we just might decide to get out of the game or sit on the sidelines – or to at least sit out the next round in the +

Whether your ministry position is a pastor, paid staff, CEO or board member of a ministry organization, volunteer, nursery worker, small group leader, greeter, parking attendant, or janitor, if you are serving the Lord in what you do, you are a target. And every single day, Satan is using you as target practice for his fiery darts.

Dear Servant of Christ, Satan wants nothing more than for you to burn out and quit serving God because then your God-influence on the world ends the moment you walk away from your calling. Or if he can keep you under pressure and trouble so that your effectiveness in the ministry is hindered, then he still sees that as a win for him. If you give in to compassion fatigue or allow stress to give way to anxiety you lose your full impact to the Kingdom. You are a Christian soldier, fighting for the King of kings and the battle needs you.

What is Satan’s goal?

While every Christian will experience attacks from Satan, the moment you answered God’s call with that obedient “yes” to serve in your ministry position, Satan became much more interested in you and his goal is to make you less effective in the work God has called you to do or to get you to quit. He will place doubts in your mind, making you think you are not qualified, or you don’t have the resources needed for the task to which God has called you. Satan will even work through the lives of those to whom you minister to bring about stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. He will use the people who should be your biggest supporters to make you feel unworthy of the call. Whatever it might look like in your life, Satan’s goal is the same: to get you off the battlefield.

Pressured in every way

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8, “We are pressured in every way…” (HCSB). Every. That means not just the pressures we experience in the ministry. There are pressures in finances, marriage, raising children, home and auto repairs, friendships, health, and every single part of life. Satan won’t settle for attacking just your ministry. He won’t settle for attacking us where we are most able to defend. He will attack in every way, and you can bet he will choose our most vulnerable areas. [2]

When we say “yes” to God’s call for any type of ministry, we do indeed have an invisible target that we wear 24/7. A target at which Satan is constantly throwing those flaming arrows (Ephesians 6:16) at us with the sole purpose of either destroying the ministry to which we have surrendered, or to tarnish it, or whatever it takes to get us to walk away, defeated.

Why does Satan fight so hard?

If Satan had his way, we would be waving the white flag of surrender in this spiritual battle we fight rather than being a surrendered, living sacrifice to God. When Satan gets his way, we are defeated, discouraged, less effective or even ineffective. Why does Satan fight so hard? Because a soul that is a surrendered, living sacrifice to God is very dangerous to the kingdom of darkness – but very powerful for the Kingdom of Heaven.

So, at the very least, he wants us discouraged, floundering in our faith, limping along from the wounds, exhausted, with nothing left to give. Sometimes, moment by moment we struggle just to put one foot in front of the other one more time.  Other times, we feel like we are on our hands and knees just struggling to crawl along, but those pesky minions have a firm grasp on one of our ankles and keeps pulling us backwards.  At that point, we either give up and walk away from the calling God gave us, or we might keep on serving in the ministry, but we do so while operating on empty tanks and therefore become less effective – or even ineffective. We lose sight of the passion, the purpose, and the call that God gave us.

Take a moment and answer this question: “What is your why?” In other words, why did you feel called to the ministry in which you serve? What compelled you? What need did you see that God wanted you to meet? And what Scripture verse spoke to you? Write out your “why” and keep it in a place where you will see if often.

Recalling our “why” can often help us rekindle the passion and purpose of our calling. Don’t lose sight of your “why.”

Called does not mean excluded from Satan’s attacks

Just because we tie it up with a pretty bow of “a calling from God,” does not mean we are excluded from the dangers that come with helping others. People in ministry empathize with the hurting. Sometimes they experience secondary trauma as they listen to and counsel the people to whom they are ministering. There are overwhelming demands on their time, emotions, and energy. It takes a toll on their physical and mental well-being, relationships, and ministry. The dangers that people in ministry face are daily and they come at us from all directions and from all kinds of sources, just as Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:8.

Satan sometimes uses people as His weapon of choice

One of the biggest dangers Satan hurls our way is often manifested through the very people to whom we are ministering. It comes through the people who are never happy no matter what we do. It comes through those who make accusations (truth or lies). He uses people to form attacks on your emotional well-being. It comes through attacks on our faith when Satan uses people to get us to doubt the call we receive from God.[3]

Not only does Satan use the people to whom we are ministering, but he also uses the people who are on his side of the battle. The unbelievers. The lost. Satan will stir these people up against the faith of Christ and make the pressure and trouble of ministry seem unrelenting.

Whether through verbal attacks, emotional attacks, or physical attacks, those serving in Satan’s army try to stop us from sharing the gospel. They do not want to be confronted with their sin. Nor do they do not want to hear about the consequences of their sin. Rather, they want to continue living the way they want to rather than submitting to God. So, they try to stamp out God and curse His name. They remove the Ten Commandments from government buildings. They change the laws to “redefine marriage.” Or they protest in favor of abortion. We’ve also seen these people walk into a church service and begin shooting.

Knowing the adversary is vital to overcoming him

God does not want us to be ignorant about Satan. He wants us to be able to recognize his lies, wiles, and schemes. So, He told us everything we need to know about him so that we can have victory and overcome his temptations. If we do not take the time to know what God told us about Satan, then we will be easily duped and find ourselves defeated time and time again. Just as we come to know God more through His word and as we experience Him at work in our lives, so do we come to know and understand how the devil operates. Do not go into battle without first knowing who your adversary is and what his battles plans are.

[1] And with thousands of years of practice, he has very good aim!

[2] Incidentally, gold, in its natural state, is ugly and full of impurities. It is only when it goes through the pressure of being refined that’s its impurities are removed, and its beauty is revealed. God can use the pressures in our lives to refine us so that His image is reflected within us.

[3] You know you the name of a dear saint just popped in your mind. Stop and pray for him or her.

Download the worksheet today.

Why is daily Bible reading important?

Bible Reading is vitally important to growing spiritually and keeping our spiritual selves full. God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts, meditate on it and apply it to our lives. When we have a plan, we are more likely to follow through. Here are eight reasons you should have a daily Bible Reading plan:

  • We can find His will for our lives
  • Bible reading is our spiritual nourishment
  • It helps us be able to discern the thoughts and intents of our heart.
  • The Bible instructs us in righteousness
  • It gives us power to overcome trials, heartaches, and sin
  • God gives us many promises, but you won’t know them unless you read about them, memorize them, and know if it’s a promise intended for us today
  • God reveals Himself to us and we learn about Him which strengthens our relationship with Him
  • He also speaks to us through His Word.

Don’t miss what God has to say to you today.
It’s time to practice spiritual self-care and read your Bible!

Practice Spiritual Self care and dig into God’s Word today to be revived and renewed!
