Names of God

Why are there so many names for God? Why is it important that we know what they are and what they mean? Our finite, human brains cannot fully comprehend the majesty and glory of who God is. Yet through the various names of God, He chooses to reveal Himself to us so we can come to understand the many personal characteristics of God. His names reveal His power, authority, and holiness. The better we understand and know the names of God, the more personal He becomes to us and as we pray, we can call on His name that corresponds with our need. And because the Bible instructs us to honor, fear, respect God and to not take His name in vain, we need to know exactly what His names are and what they mean.

Today’s Name:

Day 1 Elohim

Elohim is the Creator of mountains and valleys, sunshine and darkness, earthquakes and droughts, lions and lambs…and even snakes and spiders. All that exists is because Elohim said, “Let there be…” As you see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, a beautiful starry night, or are captivated by flashes of lightening in the sky, or see a rare bird, or are fascinated by anything God created, stop for a moment and praise Elohim for His creation that came to be through just His spoken word. When we pray to Elohim, we remember that He is the one who began it all as started out with absolutely nothing  to create the heavens and the earth, then He separated light from darkness, water from dry land, night from day. He gathered the waters together so dry land appeared and He gave it plants. He hung the sun, moon, stars, and planets in place. He added the flying creatures and the sea creatures. He filled the earth with all the animals and for the final touch, He created man in His own image. This ancient name for God contains the idea of God’s creative power as well as His total and complete authority and sovereignty. Because the word is plural, it also informs of us the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Father, show us who You are. Reveal to us why You are worthy of being called the One True, Living God. Teach us to unabashedly love you, respect Your name, and serve only You. Make your character known to us so we can live and walk in your image. Amen.

Matthew 1:22-23. Did You Hear the News?

Dec 11So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

A Dallas Newspaper printed the following responses of children who answered the question, “Where do babies come from?”

  1. Linda Staley (age 5); “Mommies go and buy them at stores. Girls cost $5 and boys cost 50 cents.”
  2. Michael Sale (age 5); “I’m not sure, but I know moms have to get them. If you’re kind of handsome, it means you’re a boy; if you’re wearing lipstick, you’re a girl.”
  3. Alicia Crew (age 5); “From fairy godmothers. They make them out of yarn and crayons.”
  4. Kelly Sweat (age 6); “They come from the frozen food section in the supermarkets, just like TV dinners. All the mommies have to do is warm them up.”
  5. David Joyner (age 6); “My mommy told me that storks bring them, but I know that isn’t true, because we have lots of babies around here and no storks. I think they come by UPS.”

On a night long ago a baby entered the world that was like no other baby before then or since then. He didn’t come from the store. He didn’t cost 50 cents (although we often treat Him like that’s all He’s worth). He wasn’t kind of handsome. In fact, Isaiah 53:2 says, “For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.” He was just your average looking man of Jewish descent. There was no fairy godmother that made Him out of yarn and crayons. Like every other infant born into the world, He was knitted together in His mother’s womb. Instead of yarn and crayons, it was atoms, cells, and DNA that was woven and knitted together. There was no frozen food section in the market place so that rules out that option. Wise young David already ruled out the stork theory. And not even the Pony Express had been created yet so he didn’t come that way.

So what makes His birth different from all the other births throughout history? I mean, after all, babies are born every day. About the only time you hear about a baby being born in the news is when there are 4 or more born at once to the same mother. Or maybe the news will print a story about the first baby born in a new year. Or when there is a tragic story such as a baby abandoned in a gas station restroom.

The baby born that night in Bethlehem didn’t get a news crew – he had a heavenly host of angels to tell the good news to everyone – and they started with some shepherds. After the shepherds saw the baby, they told everyone they saw. Can you hear them?

“Hey! Did you hear the news?”

“No. What news?”

“A Baby has been born!”

“Oh ok. Why is that news? What’s so special about another baby?”

In these two verses of Matthew (as well as prophetic verses from Isaiah and from Luke’s account in Luke 1-2, we can find five reasons that the birth of this baby is such as big deal that we still celebrate it more than 2000 years later: 1) the baby had a unique conception. 2) He had a divine origin. 3) The heavenly host of angles couldn’t contain their joy and bust into singing 4) His names show us His character while also revealing His deity. 5) He had a purpose for coming to earth .

The birth of Jesus was a big deal because this baby wasn’t conceived in the normal way. And there wasn’t IVF back then either.  This baby was born from a young girl who was still a virgin. Every other human being that has been born had both a mom and dad who contributed to their DNA. But Mary was a virgin when the child was conceived and she was still a virgin up to the time of Jesus’ birth. Matthew 1:25 says, “and [Joseph] did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son.” Jesus’ conception was one of a kind and will never be duplicated again – He was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God. Listen to what the angel told Joseph in a dream: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:20). When the angel visited Mary and told her she would have a son, she understood the way sons are made and she knew that she had never been with a man. So she asked, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke 1:34). The angel replied,”The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you;” Yes, a young virgin girl who was highly favored was chosen to mother God in the flesh. That’s big news! But that’s not all….

Not only was His conception newsworthy, but so was His origin. This baby born in Bethlehem to a poor, young virgin and laid in a manger had royal, Kingly blood. He’s the King of kings who was also the Architect of the entire universe. He fashioned the sun, heated it to 35,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit and hung it in the exact spot it needed to be so that there could be life on earth. A little bit closer and we’d all burn up. A little further away and we’d all freeze to death. Then He molded a cold, shining ball that is 2160 miles in diameter and gave it a substance that would reflect the light of the sun in such a way that it would give a soft light in the night hours. Then He made the stars and He must have really liked the stars because there are 100 billion of them just in the Milky Way. Then there is Earth. It only has six sextillion, 588 quintillion short-tons of elements that with just a spoken word they all came to be, joined together, and Earth was created. Then He created boundaries for the sea and told them they could only go that far – and dry land appeared. He added some trees, flowers, fruits, vegetables – all getting ready for Earth to sustain life. He added fish to the sea and birds to the sky. Then came animals of all kinds and finally, His greatest creation – Adam. This same Almighty Creator that spoke our entire world into being compressed Himself down to a single divine and holy cell and fused that cell with the ovum of a Jewish teenager. That cell divided and then divided again – and again – and again. Over and over as the tiny baby grew inside the womb of Mary. Then, “the days were accomplished that she should be delivered” and as the Holy, righteous Son of God entered our world as a tiny baby, thousands of joyful angels burst into singing – they simply couldn’t contain themselves.

Had Jesus been born in our world today, the angels probably would not have only sang at his birth, but they would have posted a picture of the proud mother and her precious bundle of joy all over social media and with that many angels, social media would have frozen. The news would probably pick it up, but while they might ask, “Who’s this baby?” the story angle would be about how his picture broke social media – not about the significance of His birth and certainly not that this child’s origin is one that is divine and holy – straight from Heaven itself. That is big news too – but wait – there’s more!

Have you ever noticed how baby’s born to royalty have a whole string of names? Jesus did too. When the prophet Isaiah foretold about this baby, he said, “his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6) Well that wasn’t enough so Isaiah also said his name would be Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14).  These names signified His character. The child would have extraordinary wisdom (Wonderful Counselor). He would have life that never ends (Everlasting Father). He will bring peace (Prince of Peace). But the two most significant names are Mighty God and Immanuel. As “Mighty God,” Jesus was not only 100% human, but He is also 100% God. The word translated mighty is Gibbor, which means “strength, power, hero.” The Mighty God has the strength to hold together every atom of the universe, endure the tortures of the cross, and still have enough strength for us to cast all our cares upon Him. He has the power to create the world from nothing with just a spoken word, turn water to wine, heal the sick, cast out demons, walk on water, feed 5000+ with just two fish and five small loaves of bread, and countless other miracles. And to every person  who comes by faith believing in Him for the salvation of their souls and forgiveness of their sins – He is our hero. Then there is this name Immanuel. Matthew tells us what is significant about this name. The meaning of the name is “God with us.” The Almighty God came to earth to live among His people. When the angel spoke to Mary, he said, “therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” His origin is from the throne of Heaven and He came to earth be laid in an animal’s feeding trough and slept on some prickly hay because the world had no room in the inn for Him. Surely that is newsworthy! But yes – there is still more.

Thankfully, for kindergarten aged Jesus he didn’t have to write all those names on His papers in school. The angel that spoke to Joseph said, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus. Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which means “Yahweh saves.” So not only is the name Jesus much easier to spell, but it tells us what this baby’s purpose is: “for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21). It’s the whole reason He came. It’s His purpose. He was born so He could die and that through His death He would save us from our sins. For Jesus to leave Heaven to be born as a baby and live among us and dying for us held no benefit to Jesus whatsoever. It was all sacrifice for Him. Yet He did it – for you and for me. Had He chose not to come, we’d have no hope. His coming was for our benefit. Our sin separates us from a holy righteous God and the wages that we earn for our sin is eternal death in Hell. But God, because of His love and mercy provided a way for us to be redeemed and that way was to send His only Son to pay the price for us and through His death, we could have eternal life. So the purpose of His birth was to give hope to all mankind and it’s been giving hope for more than 2000 years so that we still celebrate the birth of this baby, Immanuel, God With Us. That not just news – it’s GOOD NEWS and tidings of joy for all people.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW! Be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Learn more about hosting this event at your church or conference site by clicking here.

About the book: The GLMW book contains 365 daily challenges for couples to strengthen their relationships to each other and with God. 340591: The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger The Case for Christmas: A Journalist Investigates the Identity of the Child in the Manger

By Lee Strobel / Zondervan

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God.

Who was he really? And how can you know for sure?

Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. If Jesus really was God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible evidence, including:

  • Eyewitness Evidence – Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?
  • Scientific Evidence – What does archaeology reveal?
  • Profile Evidence – Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God?
  • Fingerprint Evidence – Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah?

The Case for Christmas invites readers to consider why Christmas matters in the first place. Somewhere beyond the traditions of the holiday lies the truth. This little book is perfect as a gift or for use in ministry during the Christmas season or any other time of the year.

Hebrews 1:1-3. Hearing the Voice of God

by Julia Bruce

Do you ever feel that God is silent? That He has nothing to say to you? If you do, know this: God, throughout history, has always been in communication with His people. The writer of Hebrews tells us that God spoke in times past in various ways. With Adam and Eve, he came in the cool of the evening to walk and talk with them. To Abraham, he stopped by to visit along with a couple of angels and had a meal with him and told him that he would make him a father of many nations. We know God told Noah to build an ark and gave him all the instructions for doing so, but the Bible doesn’t say “how” God spoke to him. For Moses, God spoke from a burning bush. (Exodus 3)  Joseph and Jacob talked with God in dreams. Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-7) and Ezekiel had “visions.” God sent angels to Gideon and Daniel. Samuel heard God call his name when he was trying to get to sleep one night. (1 Samuel 3) Elijah heard a “still, small voice.” (1 Kings 19) To speak to the entire nation of His chosen people, could communicated through his prophets that he appointed – people like Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and more. God used a donkey to speak to Balaam  (Numbers 22). He spoke to Jonah while he was sitting under a tree (Jonah 4:6).

Today, God still speaks to us, only it looks a little different. Psalms 119:105 tells that He speaks to us through His Word. Paul tells us that because nature itself tells us about God and His eternal power and divine nature, no one has an excuse, (Romans 1:20). God speaks to us in church through the music, sermons, and small group Bible study. He speaks to us deep in our inner most human spirit. And, as the writer of Hebrews tells us, he speaks to us through His Son, Jesus. While Jesus lived on earth, God spoke to us through Him and as we read the words spoken by Jesus in our Bible, He continues to speak to us through Jesus. After Jesus returned to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. He is our “communicator” from God.

God wants to reveal Himself to us so that we can know Him. Just as we get to know other people through conversations, we get to know our heavenly Father as He speaks to us and reveals something new about Himself as we worship and read His Word. The reason He wants to reveal himself to us is so we might know Him because He want us to fellowship with Him. He created us just for this purpose. If we are not seeking Him and developing our relationship with Him, then there is a void and we desperately seek to fill it – sometimes with all the wrong things  – but the only possible, satisfying why to fill the void, is to fill it with the Lord Jesus Christ.

However, each and every one of us has a problem – a sin problem. Sin will always stand in the way like a giant bully, blocking our way to God and hindering our fellowship with Him. Man’s fellowship with God was originally broken in the Garden of Eden and man has been breaking it every since. But God told Adam and Eve that He had a plan – a way to restore the broken fellowship. That plan was His own Son who would come to earth, born as a baby to a young virgin woman, grow up, teach His disciples the gospel message, die on a cross in our place as the payment for our sin – even though he knew no sin – was buried, and then rose again conquering death, hell, and the grave. This is why Jesus is the perfect voice of God.

Not only is Jesus our Redeemer and Savior, but the writer of Hebrews gives us seven attributes that details why He is superior to all that had come before and all that will come after Him.  1) He is the heir of creation for whom all thing have been made. 2) He is the Creator through whom all things have come into existence. 3) He is the radiance of the divine glory toward which all of creation looks for fulfillment. 4) He is the exact image of the person of God the Father. 5) He is the word of God, the only prophet of God who is also God Himself. 6) He is the priest of God who has provided the perfect sacrifice for all human sins. 7) He is the king who sits on the throne at the right hand of the Father. For all of these reasons, the writer of Hebrews acknowledges that Jesus is higher, superior, and above the angels.

Yet, still he longs to fellowship with us and communicate with us – as our Creator, Redeemer, Savior, and joint heir with Him. Any relationship must be nurtured for it to grow and our relationship with Christ and our heavenly Father is no different. If you struggle with hearing from God, you can learn how to be attentive to His voice as you grow in faith and spiritually mature by digging into God’s Word and praying – not just when something goes wrong in life – but every day. In John 10:27, Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” You can know and recognize His voice. I can be in a crowded room of children, but when one of my children say, “Mom!” I can zero in on that one word and know my children are speaking to me. Why? Because I know them. I know their voice. I not only know and recognize their voice, but I can tell by the tone of their voice if something is wrong or if all is okay with them. Why can I pick their voice out of a noisy crowded room? How can I tell just by hearing their voice that something is wrong? Because I have been there every day of their lives. My son is now almost 24 years old and has his own place to live, but I still know his voice because even if I’m not with him every day, we talk on the phone. The point is, if you want to know the voice of God, you have to spend time with Him every day. If you are not willing to do so, you will not be able to recognize His voice in the chaotic world we live in. You won’t be able to tell if that voice you think you hear is His, Satan’s, or your own thoughts.

To be able to hear the voice of God, we have to first quieten our spirits. If you’ve ever tried to do that then you know it can be difficult. It’s like if I say to you, “I do not want you to think about the word ‘cookie’. All of a sudden cookies are all you can think about. When you try to quiet you spirit – all of a sudden everything you didn’t get done today comes rushing into your mind. Paul told us to “take every thought captive” and we can do it. Sometimes it takes several attempts – so don’t give up. As my piano teacher used to say, “Practice makes perfect.” And so does patience. Sometimes those distractions when you are trying to quiet your spirit are Satan trying to interrupt the voice of God from reaching you. So if you struggle with getting quiet, as the Holy Spirit to bind up Satan and empower you to get quiet so you can hear from God.

When you think you have heard from God, there are some “tests” you can hold against what you think you’ve heard to try to determine if it was indeed from God:

  • Just as Elijah found out in 1 Kings 19, God often speaks in a still, small voice, gently leading us towards His will and His plans for us. When it our self or Satan trying to deceive us, the message looks more like a loud, compulsive, clamoring demand.
  • Matthew 11:28-30 tells us the God’s voice produces freedom. Self and Satan’s voice will often produce bondage.
  • Jeremiah 29:12-13 tells us that God is able to be found (heard) when we are consciously, whole-heartedly seeking Him. Self or Satan will speak with sudden intrusions of thoughts into the mind.
  • Psalms 37:4 teach us that God is always in control, so if He speaks to us, then we should have a sense that everything is under control. If it seem like everything is out of control with the message you have received, then it is probably born within our self or it is from Satan.
  • Just as when God wanted Noah to build the ark, he provided Noah with all the instructions, blueprints, etc. God often gives clear and specific directions. Even when he spoke to Abraham and told him to leave his home but God didn’t give him the directions, he told Abraham that He would lead him. Satan and Self breeds confusion – not certainty
  • When God convicts, He will point out specific sins and extend an invitation for us to confess, repent, and find forgiveness. Self and Satan accuses us in such a way that we are left with guilt and no forgiveness.
  • When God speaks, it is always 100% truth that can be tested by the Word of God. Self and Satan often dish out lies that are laced with half-truths.
  • God’s voice gives us a sense of peace while self or Satan does not.
  • We can also test the Word we receive through the wisdom of many counselors who can help confirm that what we heard was from God or not.

No matter how much we desire to hear the voice of God, there is no shortcuts to learning to recognize when He speaks to us. If you want to hear from him, you must spend time with Him. The more time you spend with Him, the easier it will be for you to recognize His voice. God says in Jeremiah 29:12-13, “You will call to Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for me with all your heart. I will be found by you.” — this is the Lord declaration. If you are having trouble with hearing form God, are you seeking and searching for Him with all your heart?

Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with. This knowledge inspires her passion for being available with a fresh perspective for those who want to provide their congregations with meaningful spiritual growth opportunities, regardless of size.

Quotes from the Self Care Blog Series

Today’s quote from the Self-Care Blog Series:

web graphicThe very God that gave us life is the same God that psychology calls a “higher power”.  When the Bible teaches us to meditate day and night on God’s Word, psychology’s version is more about breathing exercises and visualizing “a peaceful place.” — Julia Bruce

Cover_mBOOKING NOW to be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:
