Let’s BE the Church

Spreading the Gospel

When Jesus gave the great commission He told the disciples they were to scatter outward from Jerusalem to be witnesses for Him. Because of the Christians being persecuted in Jerusalem, they had little choice. Therefore, persecution became a significant point in the development of the early church. By spreading out to Judea, Galilee, and Samaria they created the second stage of growth of the church as they took the gospel message outside of Israel and into the Gentile world. Whenever we take the gospel outside our sphere, the result is always the same: the church grows. The great commission was not just Jesus’ mandate to the disciples. It is Jesus’ mandate to the church today and we need to be the church.

What is the Church?

We often refer to “church” as the building where we go to fellowship with other believers. But the Church is more than brick and mortar, carpet and pews, choirs and praise teams. The Church is actually the body of believers. In fact, the word “church” in the original language means “crowd.” So, the church, then, is made up of the crowd of people who have surrendered their life to Christ. Therefore, there is only one church. However, within the Church, there are local congregations that meet and gather to worship God and encourage one another. So when we talk about the church growing, we’re not talking about a Building Campaign to build a bigger sanctuary. We’re talking about adding souls into the Kingdom of God.

We often refer to “church” as the building where we go to fellowship with other believers. But the church is more than brick & mortar, carpet & pews, choirs & praise teams. The Church is actually the body of believers-people who have surrendered their life to Christ. Therefore, there is only one church.

From Acts 9:31 we see three things that helped the church grow. We can use these same three principles today so that the church can see substantial growth once again. Acts 9:31 says:

Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

1. They were edified

To edify means to build one another up. The world does a great job at tearing others down, but this should not be true of Christians. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul wrote that the church was to “encourage one another and build one another up. Jude wrote, “you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20). And in Ephesians 4:29, we can see what it looks like to build one another up: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

How much would the church grow today if we edified one another rather than tearing each other down?

2. The early Church walked in the fear of the Lord

Most of us today have been walking in the fear of a pandemic for the past year. But “fearing the Lord” doesn’t mean to be afraid. Simply put, the early church had respect and reverence for the law of God. “To walk in the fear of the Lord” then means they obeyed His laws. God’s laws are not suggestions. They are not meant to be obeyed just on Sunday morning when we dress our best and walk through the church doors. Rather we are to walk in His law and in His truths day and night.

Psalm 1:2 says, “His delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.” This means that we dwell on God’s word, taking it into our hearts, and apply it to our lives as the Holy Spirit works within us. Walking in the fear of the Lord isn’t just for when others are watching us. It’s also for when no one is watching.

How would the church grow today, if we walked in the fear of the Lord? How would our lives be different? Would our homes be different? Would our marriages be different? How would our finances be different?

3. They were in the comfort of the Holy Spirit

As a church that was being persecuted, they needed the power and comfort of the Holy Spirit enabling them to be bold and continue telling the gospel message despite the persecution they faced. Most of the apostles were not only persecuted, they were eventually put to death for their faith. As they watched their fellow apostles die, they would have the comfort, strength, and boldness to continue spreading the gospel in the Holy Spirit.

Some parts of the world today still see persecution of Christians. If Satan were to have his way, he’d stamp out all of Christianity and he sure is trying to get his way! But just as the Holy Spirit was the source of comfort in the early church, so He is today and He accomplishes it through the word of God, through inspiring others around us with messages and words that bring us comfort, and He can directly minister comfort to our hearts. Just as His work helped the early Christians be bold witnesses for Christ, so it can help us today.

How would our churches grow if every Christian accepted the comfort of the Holy Spirit so they could boldly proclaim the name of Jesus?

What would the early church have to say about the church today?

I often wonder if the saints of the early church could see the church of today, what would they think of us? Many of them were martyred for their faith – but they told the world of their day about Jesus anyway. They new that to be bold witnesses for Christ it would eventually catch up with them and cost them their lives.

While there are some countries who still live with the same fear the disciples did, today, many Christians’ only fear to spread the gospel is a fear of what others will think about them. We sit within our pretty churches, raising our hands in praise and prayer, but when asked to go and witness, we’d rather hide under the pew. But church – the lost who are dying and going to hell are depending on us to be the church and tell them about Jesus.

It’s time the church today arises and does the work of the church. We need to edify, walk in the fear of the Lord, and dwell in the comfort of the Holy Spirit who enables and empowers us to boldly go forth to tell the gospel message to a lost and dying world.

So church – let’s be the church!

The Cost of Lying to the Holy Spirit?

Have you ever seen kids having a conversation and one of them puts their hand behind their back and crosses their fingers so that the lie they are telling isn’t a lie? Or maybe they say, “Cross my heart, hope to die” as a means of saying “I’m telling you the truth”? Ananias and Sapphira found out that lying to the Holy Spirit is no small sin – fingers crossed or not – and it cost them everything.

A Guilty Couple

At the end of Acts 4, believers were selling their possessions and bringing the money to the apostles who then distributed it evenly so that everyone’s needs were being met. Chapter 4 closes out telling us about Barnabas who sold a piece of property and brought the money to the apostles. Chapter 5 opens up with telling us about a husband and wife, Ananias and Sapphira, who sold a possession and kept part of the proceeds for themselves. However, when they brought the rest of it to the apostles, they told the apostles they were giving the entire selling price.

Sin #1: Lying to the Holy Spirit

There was nothing wrong with them keeping part of the money from the sell of their possession. The sin came when they told the disciples they were giving the entire amount of the selling price to the work of God when in fact, they were only giving a portion of it. They may not have actually slipped their hand behind their backs with fingers crossed, but it was the same principle – they lied! They knew they were lying to men and they probably also knew they were lying to the Holy Spirit. While they could have fooled the apostles, they couldn’t fool God. They just thought they could get away with it.

Sin #2: A desire for the praise of men

Not only was their sin in their deception, but they also desired to win the praise of men. The couple noticed that Barnabas was much respected for his generosity and they wanted the same recognition for themselves. Maybe they were even a little bit envious because Peter specifically tells Ananias that Satan had filled his heart.

Are we guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit in church today?

Do Christians today lie to the Holy Spirit? Are we guilty of wanting the praise of men? Do we try to “look the part” on the outside, but our heart is far from it? Consider just a few examples.

Perhaps your church called its members to fast and pray and you agree to it, but then half way through the fast, you break your commitment. Then the next Sunday comes around and someone asks you how you did. You smile and with fingers crossed, you tell them it was great experience and you kept the whole fast. You not only lied to the church members, but you are also guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Or what about when your church holds it’s annual tithe pledge and you pledge to give a certain dollar amount weekly, but don’t give as much as you pledge or don’t give at all. You knew that when you put that amount down that you had no intention of giving that much, but you write it down anyway. You’ve not only lied to the church who builds its budget off the anticipated tithes as indicated by the pledges, you’re also guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Ananais and Sapphira’s Consequences

The Holy Spirit revealed to Peter that Ananias and Sapphira had lied and Peter called them out for it. As soon as Ananias heard Peter say, “You have not lied to men but to God,” Ananias fell down, dead. About three hours later, his wife came in, unknowing what had happened to her husband. Peter asked her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” and she indicated that they had sold it for that price. This confirms the couple conspired together to “dupe” the apostles, making her just as guilty as her husband. When Peter called her out on the lie, she too fell down and died.

We Can’t Fool God

We can slip a hand behind our backs and have our fingers crossed and everyone around us will believe we are Godly people, but we can’t fool God.

Psalm 139 says: “Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up, You understand my thoughts from far away, You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me…Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to heaven, You are there, if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I live at the eastern horizon or settle at the western limits, even there Your hand will lead me;

God is omniscient. He knows everything. You cannot lie to Him and Him not know it. He even knows the intentions of our heart and what motivates us. There is simply no fooling God.

Sin #3 Hypocrisy

Ananias and Sapphira’s sin was not just lying and seeking the praise of men. There is a third sin involved in their dishonesty. It was also a sin of hypocrisy. They wanted to make the other church members believe they were something they were not. They wanted the church to think they had done something they had no intention of doing. Their actions were intentional deception while pretending to be motivated by the love of God, all for the sake of attempting to promote themselves.

Christians everywhere, in every congregation, commit the same sin Sunday after Sunday. We sing “Here I am to Worship” while checking our watch to see how much longer church will last. Or we sing, “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God” when we truly seek to fill our own desires. We hang wall decorations in our home that say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,” when our homes are full of bickering, fighting, and cussing. We sing with our hands lifted high, “I Surrender All,” but in truth, we surrender nothing. Yes. We too are guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit.

Do Christian today lie to the Holy Spirit? We sing “Here I am to Worship” or “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God”, or “I Surrender All when our heart is far from worship, all we seek is our own desires, and we surrender nothing.

How Would Church be Different If we refused to lie to the Holy Spirit?

How would our lives and our churches be different if we refused to sing or pray or worship until we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and reveal the ways we have been lying to Him? Would the way we worship be different? Would anyone open their mouth to sing? Let’s stop worshiping with our mouth while one hand is behind our back with our fingers crossed. Let’s stop lying to the Holy Spirit. Confess the lies you’ve been telling Him and allow him to renew a right spirit within you.

How would our lives, churches, and worship be different if we refused to sing, pray, or worship until we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and reveal the ways we have been lying to Him? Would our worship be different?

Why is daily Bible reading important?

Bible Reading is vitally important to growing spiritually and keeping our spiritual selves full. God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts, meditate on it and apply it to our lives. When we have a plan, we are more likely to follow through. Here are eight reasons you should have a daily Bible Reading plan:

  • We can find His will for our lives
  • Bible reading is our spiritual nourishment
  • It helps us be able to discern the thoughts and intents of our heart.
  • The Bible instructs us in righteousness
  • It gives us power to overcome trials, heartaches, and sin
  • God gives us many promises, but you won’t know them unless you read about them, memorize them, and know if it’s a promise intended for us today
  • God reveals Himself to us and we learn about Him which strengthens our relationship with Him
  • He also speaks to us through His Word.

Don’t miss what God has to say to you today.
It’s time to practice spiritual self-care and read your Bible!

New in the Teespring Store: The Prayer of Blessing

We’ve added a new canvas print to the Teespring Store.

God instructed the Israelite priests to pray the prayer of blessing every day over the people. The prayer is found in Numbers 6:24-26. Hang the canvass in your home or carry the mug, tote bag, or water bottle and let the prayer of blessing impact all those who you meet throughout the day.

We’ve also put this design on a poster, coffee mug, a stainless steel water bottle, phone cases, and a few other products.

Hey Christian…Speak Up!

What does God want to say through you?

Have you ever felt that God was wanting you to say something to someone but you didn’t? Most often we feel like we don’t know what to say. Or we stumble around in our thoughts trying to convince ourselves that God isn’t asking us to say something. But when we choose to keep our mouths shut, we silence the voice of God. On the other hand, we can be just as guilty of saying something God did not prompt us to say, but we disguise with “God wanted me to tell you…”

Maybe you know the other person is grieving or hurting or in need. Maybe you don’t know their circumstances at all. Perhaps they are a total stranger. Or maybe this other person is someone who had hurt or ridiculed you. Whoever they are, often God choses us as the method to speak to others and when we don’t they miss out on the word God has for them. So when you feel God prompting you to speak to someone – speak up!

Some not very encouraging news

Jesus said in Matthew 10 that persecutions are coming. Not very encouraging news, is it? Jesus said that he was sending us out as sheep in the midst of wolves and that we should be wise as serpents and harmless as doves while still being aware that people will turn on us. And when they do, we are not to worry about what we should say to their accusations because in the moment that we should speak, the Holy Spirit will give us the words we need to say. But when He does give us the words – then we become responsible for saying them so we have to – speak up.

The hardest word is the first word so go ahead and speak up

The same is true in every circumstance where God is asking us to speak up. Often times, the hardest word is the first word but once we open our mouths, the words just start coming. Then you might look back afterwards and say, “where did that come from?” It came from the Holy Spirit speaking through you.

Created to be a blessing

God created us to worship Him and give Him praise. He also created us to be a blessing to others. Philippians 2:1-5 says, “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.”

We are to be an encouragement and comfort to others, showing affection and sympathy. We are to do nothing out of rivalry or conceit but in humility, always thinking of others as more important than ourselves. Wow! What a different world we would live in if we lived this way!

Who is the Holy Spirit asking you to Speak Up to?

Who is it that Holy Spirit is prompting you to speak to? When we speak up, we speak life into their lives. We fill them with blessings of encouragement, love, mercy, and grace of God. What if your speaking up stopped them from committing suicide today? What if you speaking up kept them from making a big mistake in their life? Or what if you speaking up was the word they needed to surrender their life to Christ? What if you don’t?

Speak up. Be life. Be light. The Holy Spirit will give you the words to say – just speak up.

Revive Us Again, Lord

Our nation and our world need to experience a revival. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins, and heal their land.” Revival begins with the people of God. We invite you to join us in praying for revival for America and our world.
