Isaiah 49:15b-16. God doesn’t forget you.

by Julia Bruce

10 Isaiah 49 15b-16Almost every Christian, at some point in life, feels like God has forgotten them or at least forgotten the situation they are going through. But it simply isn’t true. (Click to tweet) In the book of Isaiah, the prophet writes of coming judgement on the nation of Israel and in the midst of judgment, God tenderly says, “I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my Hands.” We can find here some great truths of comfort and reassurance for the times that it “feels” like God has forgotten us.

12 cttThe first word to notice is “inscribed.” God didn’t use a #2 pencil with a pink eraser so that He can wipe you away when you displease Him. He didn’t use a Papermate pen that can wash away with soap and water. He didn’t use a Sharpie permanent marker that can eventually wear off. Being inscribed is permanent. The word used in the Bible means “cut into,” “to carve.” Once you become a child of God your name is there and it will never go away. No matter how many times we mess up. No matter how many times we slip back into that sin that constantly nags at us. No matter how much we falter in our faith. No matter how often we choose our will over His. Permanent is forever.  My cousin perms my hair for me and she gives me glorious curls that most people think are natural because she is so good at what she does – but that perm is really not permanent. My hair grows (much too fast!) and I’m back in her chair getting it cut when then requires getting more curls. My hair might outgrow it’s perm – but we can never make our inscribing un-permanent from the hand of God. When God engraves us in the palm of His hands there is absolutely nothing that can undo it. His tender love and mercy is always being extended and His love toward us never changes. His love is not based on how he feels about us in that moment. He doesn’t love us any less right now than He did yesterday. David wrote in Psalm 13:5, “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.” We can trust in God’s love for us – at all times.

The second thing to notice is who did the engraving. No one held the hand of God down against his will and branded your name in His hand. This verse tells us that God himself did the engraving. Our Salvation is only possible through God’s invitation and the work that Christ did on the cross. Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:3-6, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love, He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.” Every part of our salvation is accomplished through God. We only accept it through faith as we call on His name, confessing our sins and asking Christ to save us.

The third thing to notice is the location of where he carved your name – in the palm of His hands. Not in an obscure place, but on His Hands where he sees your name constantly. It isn’t hidden. It’s there for all the heavenly hosts to see. You are his! In John 10:28-29, Jesus says that He gives eternal life and that no one can snatch us out of the palm of His Father’s hand. In Psalm 139:10, David wrote that the hand of God would lead Him and the right hand of God would hold him. The right hand is significant in that in the Bible the right hand was the hand of strength.  If a solider was left handed, he was trained to fight right handed. God holds us with His strength, which means we are secure and safe no matter what life brings. He calls us by name and we are his (Isaiah 43:1).

In the moments where it feels as if God has forgotten you, simply remember the palm of His hands. Your name is there and with His right hand, He is holding you by His Almighty strength – forever.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW to be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Psalm 139:7-12. You Can’t Hide From God

Psalm 139 7-12

When you were growing up, did you ever do something wrong and try to hide from your parents? Or maybe you tried to hide or cover up what you did. I am a middle child, preacher’s kid with a little bit of Irish mischievousness mixed in. Then throw in opinionated and stubborn and you’ll begin to know my personality and can imagine how I kept my parents on their knees praying for me.

I’m not the only one who understands hiding. Chances are you’ve been there a time or two before too. Adam and Eve also understood hiding. They broke the only rule God gave and sinned. When God came walking in the Garden, Adam and Eve both hid. They also passed the blame. We do that too. They also learned that there is no such thing as hiding from God. God is omniscience – meaning He is all knowing. The psalmist in Psalm 139:7-12 understood this. He knew there was nowhere he could go to escape God because God is omnipresent – meaning He is everywhere.

When we are guilty of sin, the idea of not being able to hide from God can be unsettling. But when our hearts are right with Him, it is the biggest blessing we could have. (click to tweet) God said, that He goes before us and that He “will never leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8) When I’m facing something scary or bad, I want God to be right there with me.

Earlier this year I had to have a MRI due to some neck and shoulder pain. The way they positioned me in the MRI made it hurt so much more – not to mention the closed in space (and it was an open MRI!). For the next several hours while they took images, with quiet tears streaming down and teeth gritted against the pain (seriously! My jaw hurt from clinching so hard!), I prayed over and over for Jesus to be there with me. I quoted every verse I could think of about God always being with us. I used my psychology degrees on myself and did some image therapy on myself. I imagined myself in a beautiful garden with a waterfall and Jesus coming to sit with me. I imagined myself on the beach with the wind blowing in my hair and Jesus walking beside me. I sang praise songs in my mind. By the time it was over,  I was sure I had called on the name of Jesus so many times that he was bound to show up in the MRI images! Moments like that we want God to be with us. When we are facing Pharaoh’s army and trapped against the Red Sea, we want God to be with us. When God asks us to do the impossible (like Abraham sacrificing Isaac or when Esther had to go before the king to save her people), we want God to be with us. When money is tight and you’re not sure if the groceries will last until the next pay day, you want God to be with you. When your holding the hand of someone you love as they draw their lasts breaths, you want God to be with you. When we get a bad report from the doctor, we want God to be with us. And when the spine doctor wants to do injections in your neck for a herniated disc, you want God to be with you (trust me…you do!).

It is only when we stand guilty before God that we want to hide and the words of Psalm 139:7-12 become intimidating rather than encouraging. When you read these words, what is your initial reaction to them. (click to tweet)  Did you sense dread or did they lift you up and give you a reason to praise? Your reaction may let you know if you need to do some repenting or if you have cause to do some praising.

Some years back, while going through one of the hardest seasons of my life, I was angry. Angry with the world, everyone in it and angry with God. I was hurt and felt betrayed. But at the same time, I was desperately searching for the “why” behind the season. So I began reading as many Christian books I could get my hands on and combing through scripture looking for something to give me an answer to the question that burned most in my mind – Why am I still here? One of the books (other than the Bible) that had a big impact on me is Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. It was as if God had Pastor Warren write that book just for me and the fact that it was in my hands at that particular time of my life was all God’s doing.

What had happened during that time could have ended up very differently. I had many sleepless nights during that time and for some time after it as I struggled with PTSD symptoms and it was one of those nights that I read the verses of Psalm 139 and they hit me like a ton of bricks as God whispered across my heart – “You’re still here because I was there and in control. I saw it all. I was there. I still have plans for you.” These words were a turning point for me in my walk with God. It was like the Grinch in Dr. Seuss who’s heart grew 10 times – but for me, it was my faith that grew and started me on journey of developing a passionate relationship with God. It also started me on a journey to discover what God’s plans for me were. God wasn’t just there with me in that season – He is always there – every moment of every day.

When we totally surrender our mess to Him, He does what only He can do and will make beauty out of ashes. (click to tweet) The beauty that came out of my ashes is this ministry and the vision God has given me for it. I knew that somehow God wanted to take the experience I had gone through and use it for His glory and to help others. I went back to college and finished my bachelors while working full time and raising two children – and still managed to graduate summa cum laude. Without a break, I went on to complete my masters degree. Since then, God  continues to shape and mold the vision for Wellspring and He has great things planned for this ministry. I can’t wait to see all that He will do with it. The vision of Wellspring has developed and grown to become a God-sized dream beyond my capabilities, but never beyond His. Nothing is impossible with God.  I am learning that the hardest part of a God-sized dream is waiting on God. But He is even there in the waiting.

Without that season, I sometimes wonder if this ministry would even exist. When we allow Him to take the experiences of our lives and shape and mold them, He will use them for His glory. (Click to tweet)  So even if your instinct is to run and hide as you read Psalm 139, don’t. Instead, fall on your knees in repentance. The grace and forgiveness of God is so much better than hanging on to guilt, anger, bitterness, depression, anxiety, and fear. The God who created you loves you unconditionally. He is there. Run to Him – not away from Him. (click to tweet)

Psalm 61:2 – Lead me to the Rock

Jul 30 Psalm 61 2

Life is filled with pressure and stress. Stress to meet deadlines, stress to get the bills paid, stress in learning a new job, stress to handle the amount of work on your desk, stress carring for a loved one with an illness. Pressure to be liked by your peers, pressure to make the team, pressure to get the next promotion. Sooner or later we come to a boiling point where we feel burried beneath the weight of the stress and pressure. Things are just more than we can handle. At times, we even feel defeated by it. We throw up our hands and cry out, “I don’t know what to do!” or “I can’t go on like this!” In that moment we either experience our greatest tragedy or our greatest victory. It just depends on where turn for help.

For some they seek help in alochol or drugs. Some seek relief in pornography. Some seek relief in sexual relationships. Some seek relief in sports, hobbies, or video games. And in today’s world, it can even be sought in virtual reality. Even if one find distraction in these things for a short while, there is no security or strength found in them to help us through the situation. In fact, most of these things only bring more problems. More tragedy.

Tragedy can also happen when we are overwhelmed when we attempt to make a major decision while we are feeling stress and pressure. Often, when we attempt to make decisions at this time, we make the wrong decision or one that is irreversibe. These might be something like the decision to drive a car after drinking or getting high, choosing to cheat on your spouse, choosing to get married or divorce, deciding to buy an expensive item you can’t really afford.

So then, when we feel overwhelmed, what should we do? Daivd prayed in Psalm 61:2, Lead me to the Rock.”  In 2 Samuel 22 David said, “The Lord is my Rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior.” In the Bible, a rock is a symbol of strength and security and in the moment that David wrote Psalm 61:2, he needed the stability and security of a rock strong enought to stand against the circumstances that caused him to feel overwhelmed. He needed a Rock that is higher than him – a place above his own wisdom and abilities. Jesus is “higher than us” in His diety, knowledge, and power. He is higher in that He is worthy of our praise and worship. He is higher in that He is the only way to salvation.

David also needed God to lead him to that rock. Often when we are feeling overwhelmed, we just are not able to see the path that leads to the Rock because we are too focused on the problem and become blinded to way to get there. He knew he didn’t have the strength on his own to get to the Rock in that moment. Instead he cries out to God to lead him to the Rock.

When we turn to the Rock, abide there, and trust God, we can find both strength and security for all of life’s overwhelming moments. So when you are feeling overwhelmed, follow David’s example and ask God to lead you to the rock that is higher than you. When we do, our moments of feeling overwhelmed will become a greatest victories.
