Lead Me to the Rock

Pressure, Stress, Burnout, Compassion Fatigue

Life is filled with pressure and stress. Stress to meet deadlines, stress to get the bills paid, stress in learning a new job, stress to handle the amount of work on your desk, stress caring for a loved one with an illness. Pressure to be liked by your peers, pressure to make the team, pressure to get the next promotion. Sooner or later we come to a boiling point where we feel berried beneath the weight of the stress and pressure. Things are just more than we can handle. At times, we even feel defeated by it. We throw up our hands and cry out, “I don’t know what to do!” or “I can’t go on like this!”

Burnout and Compassion Fatigue are real and we experience these in those moments when we cry out, “I can’t take another step!” In that moment we either experience our greatest tragedy or our greatest victory. It just depends on where turn for help. David turned to his Rock, his Fortress. Where do you go in these moments?

I’m well familiar with pressure, stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Not only do I keep up this blog and I’m CEO of this ministry. But this is what I do “part-time.” I also wear the title of Senior Director of Foster Care for a statewide agency and in that role, I oversee thirteen staff in 22 counties. I’m also currently writing two books and mentoring curriculum for an organization in which I serve on the Board of Directors. And if that wasn’t enough, I have a husband with some significant medical needs that keeps me on my toes.

Seeking Relief

For some they seek relief in alcohol or drugs. Some seek relief in pornography. Some seek relief in sexual relationships. Others seek relief in sports, hobbies, or video games. And in today’s world, it can even be sought in virtual reality. Even if one find distraction in these things for a short while, there is no security or strength found in them to help us through the situation. In fact, most of these things only bring more problems. More tragedy.

Tragedy can also happen when we are overwhelmed when we attempt to make a major decision while we are feeling stress and pressure. Often, when we attempt to make decisions at this time, we make the wrong decision or one that is irreversible. These might be something like the decision to drive a car after drinking or getting high, choosing to cheat on your spouse, choosing to get married or divorce, deciding to buy an expensive item you can’t really afford.

Me Power

We are not meant to do life in our own power. How do I know when I’m relying on myself? When I begin to feel overwhelmed, discourage, afraid. When I begin to feel like I can’t take another step in the calling God has given me and I’m ready to throw in the white flag. Or when the passion I have for my ministry feels more like a burden. God wants us to depend on Him and live life through His power. When we live in His power, He gets the glory as others see Him at work in our lives. When we have nothing left to give, we need to let go of the reigns and follow David’s example by crying out to God, “Lead me to the Rock!”

Lead Me to the Rock

So then, when we feel overwhelmed, what should we do? David prayed in Psalm 61:2, “I call to You from the ends of the earth when my heart is without strength. Lead me to a rock that is high above me.”  In 2 Samuel 22 David said, “The Lord is my Rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior.”

In the Bible, a rock is a symbol of strength and security and in the moment that David wrote Psalm 61:2, he needed the stability and security of a rock strong enough to stand against the circumstances that caused him to feel overwhelmed. He needed a Rock that is higher than him – a place above his own wisdom and abilities. Jesus is “higher than us” in His deity, knowledge, and power. He is higher in that He is worthy of our praise and worship. He is higher in that He is the only way to salvation.

David also needed God to lead him to that rock. Often when we are feeling overwhelmed, we just are not able to see the path that leads to the Rock because we are too focused on the problem and become blinded to way to get there. He knew he didn’t have the strength on his own to get to the Rock in that moment. Instead he cries out to God to lead him to the Rock.

Making overwhelming moments victorious moments

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, depressed, fatigued, afraid, uncertain, worried, or have anxiety, we have a Rock that is higher than us. A strong fortress in which we can hide. We have the arms of our Savior waiting to embrace us, strengthen us, love us, encourage us and give us just what we need for one more step forward. When we run to the Rock, take time out to abide there. Spend time in His presence. We can find both strength and security for all of life’s overwhelming moments. So when you are feeling overwhelmed, follow David’s example and ask God to lead you to the rock that is higher than you. When we do, our moments of feeling overwhelmed can become a greatest victories.

Prayers for Revival: Know my anxieties

by Julia Bruce
CEO & Keynote speaker

God knows our anxieties

What creates anxieties in your life? What keeps you up at night or makes you afraid? Your first answer might be 2020. It seems that between COVID, racial issues, police brutality (by a few!), the crime and murder rate, and even the elections can all be valid reasons for plenty of anxieties in our lives. But what do we do with those anxieties?

The Bible has a lot to say about anxiety, but the word itself may not be found all that often. In the English Standard Version, it is used 8 times. In the New International Version, it is found 7 times. The King James Version does not use the word at all. Synonyms like trouble, heaviness, distress, and cares are used in its place. In Psalm 139:23-24, the HCSB uses the word “concerns.”

Under your anxieties, do you find Solid Rock or sinking sand

The problems in our world today, remind me of the old hymn lyrics written by Edward Mote around 1834:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When we stand on the things that make us anxious, we’re standing on sinking sand. But when we are standing on the solid Rock that is Jesus, then regardless of what goes on around us, we have a steadfast hope that will keep us from falling into the sinking sand of sin and doubt.

In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, Jesus says we should not experience anxieties over the cares of this life. Since our Heavenly Father knows our every need and He cares about each one of them, we have no need to worry about even the basic necessities of life, like food and clothing. How do we know He does cares about even the little things in our lives? If God takes care of simple things like grass, flowers, and birds, won’t He also care for people who He created in His image? Rather than worry over things we cannot control, we should “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [the necessities of life] will be added to you” (verse 33). Putting God first is a cure for anxiety. Where are your feet planted? On the solid Rock or sinking sand?

When sin is the cause of anxiety

Many times, the anxiety we feel is a result of sin in our life and the only way to deal with the concern is deal with the sin. Psalm 32:1-5 says that the person whose sin is forgiven is blessed, and the heavy weight of guilt is taken away when sins are confessed.

Maybe your anxiety comes from a a broken relationship. 1 Corinthians 13:11 tells us to make peace with others.

Fear of the unknown in 2020 is a true cause for concern and anxiety. But in Psalm 68:20, we learn we can turn it over to the One who knows everything and is in control of it all.

Perhaps there is an overwhelming issue in your life that leaves you feeing like your out in a small boat on storm tossed waves in the dark of night. When the disciples became distressed in a storm, Jesus first rebuked their lack of faith, then rebuked the wind and the waves (Matthew 8:23-27). As long as we are with Jesus, there is nothing to fear. Will Jesus say to you “O ye of little faith”?

Do not be anxious about anything

We can count God to provide for our needs, protect us from evil, guide us, and keep our souls secure for eternity. We may not be able to prevent anxious thoughts from entering our minds, but we can practice the right response. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Today’s Revival Prayer

Father, we come before you now, casting our every care on you, knowing that you care about even the smallest details of our lives. Because you work all things out for our good, we do not have to be anxious about anything. So we bring our concerns and anxieties to you now, asking you – the God that is bigger than any problem – to work on our behalf so that you are glorified in this problem that gives us concern. We thank you and praise your for your presence that gives us strength, your love that never ends, your provision that sees to our needs, your protection from evil, and for keeping our souls safe in your for all eternity. Helps us to seek you first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Cover_mBOOKING NOW to be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

About the book: The GLMW book contains 365 daily challenges for couples to strengthen their relationships to each other and with God. Psalm 61:2 – Lead me to the Rock

Jul 30 Psalm 61 2

Life is filled with pressure and stress. Stress to meet deadlines, stress to get the bills paid, stress in learning a new job, stress to handle the amount of work on your desk, stress carring for a loved one with an illness. Pressure to be liked by your peers, pressure to make the team, pressure to get the next promotion. Sooner or later we come to a boiling point where we feel burried beneath the weight of the stress and pressure. Things are just more than we can handle. At times, we even feel defeated by it. We throw up our hands and cry out, “I don’t know what to do!” or “I can’t go on like this!” In that moment we either experience our greatest tragedy or our greatest victory. It just depends on where turn for help.

For some they seek help in alochol or drugs. Some seek relief in pornography. Some seek relief in sexual relationships. Some seek relief in sports, hobbies, or video games.

Often, when we attempt to make decisions at this time, we make the wrong decision or one that is irreversibe. These might be something like the decision to drive a car after drinking or getting high, choosing to cheat on your spouse, choosing to get married or divorce, deciding to buy an expensive item you can’t really afford.

So then, when we feel overwhelmed, what should we do? Daivd prayed in Psalm 61:2, Lead me to the Rock.”  In 2 Samuel 22 David said, “The Lord is my Rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior.” In the Bible, a rock is a symbol of strength and security and in the moment that David wrote Psalm 61:2, he needed the stability and security of a rock strong enought to stand against the circumstances that caused him to feel overwhelmed. He needed a Rock that is higher than him – a place above his own wisdom and abilities. Jesus is “higher than us” in His diety, knowledge, and power.

When we turn to the Rock, abide there, and trust God, we can find both strength and security for all of life’s overwhelming moments. So when you are feeling overwhelmed, follow David’s example and ask God to lead you to the rock that is higher than you. When we do, our moments of feeling overwhelmed will become a greatest victories.

Julia is CEO of Wellspring Christian Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people and couples develop a passionate relationship with God. A public speaker, conference trainer, event planner, and blog writer, Julia is a two-time graduate from Grand Canyon University with a bachelor in Psychology and a masters in Professional Counseling. Saved as a child and raised in church and in a Christian home and private Christian School as a Pastor’s kid, Julia has taught Sunday school, led music, played the piano, served as Children’s Director, and engaged her gifts in many other areas of church life. Previously employed with the Florida Baptist Convention, Julia organized events and led conferences for church ministry assistants.

Julia enjoys sharing her journey as a growing Christian with others looking for a deeper connection with God. Through Bible study and her own life experiences, God has given Julia a passion to help couples understand God’s design for marriage while they learn to place God first in their marriage, cultivate meaningful relationships, build intimacy, and address the tougher issues that come in every marriage so that they can experience a marriage that honors and glorifies God. Julia also loves mentoring, teaching, and working with women to help them learn to live as Godly women.

With her history and experience growing up in both small and large churches, Julia enjoys bringing top level quality events to churches of all sizes. Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with. This knowledge inspires her passion for being available with a fresh perspective for those who want to provide their congregations with meaningful spiritual growth opportunities.
