Prayers for Revival: Know my anxieties

by Julia Bruce
CEO & Keynote speaker

God knows our anxieties

What creates anxieties in your life? What keeps you up at night or makes you afraid? Your first answer might be 2020. It seems that between COVID, racial issues, police brutality (by a few!), the crime and murder rate, and even the elections can all be valid reasons for plenty of anxieties in our lives. But what do we do with those anxieties?

The Bible has a lot to say about anxiety, but the word itself may not be found all that often. In the English Standard Version, it is used 8 times. In the New International Version, it is found 7 times. The King James Version does not use the word at all. Synonyms like troubleheavinessdistress, and cares are used in its place. In Psalm 139:23-24, the HCSB uses the word “concerns.”

Under your anxieties, do you find Solid Rock or sinking sand

The problems in our world today, remind me of the old hymn lyrics written by Edward Mote around 1834:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When we stand on the things that make us anxious, we’re standing on sinking sand. But when we are standing on the solid Rock that is Jesus, then regardless of what goes on around us, we have a steadfast hope that will keep us from falling into the sinking sand of sin and doubt.

In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, Jesus says we should not experience anxieties over the cares of this life. Since our Heavenly Father knows our every need and He cares about each one of them, we have no need to worry about even the basic necessities of life, like food and clothing. How do we know He does cares about even the little things in our lives? If God takes care of simple things like grass, flowers, and birds, won’t He also care for people who He created in His image? Rather than worry over things we cannot control, we should “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things [the necessities of life] will be added to you” (verse 33). Putting God first is a cure for anxiety. Where are your feet planted? On the solid Rock or sinking sand?

When sin is the cause of anxiety

Many times, the anxiety we feel is a result of sin in our life and the only way to deal with the concern is deal with the sin. Psalm 32:1-5 says that the person whose sin is forgiven is blessed, and the heavy weight of guilt is taken away when sins are confessed.

Maybe your anxiety comes from a a broken relationship. 1 Corinthians 13:11 tells us to make peace with others.

Fear of the unknown in 2020 is a true cause for concern and anxiety. But in Psalm 68:20, we learn we can turn it over to the One who knows everything and is in control of it all.

Perhaps there is an overwhelming issue in your life that leaves you feeing like your out in a small boat on storm tossed waves in the dark of night. When the disciples became distressed in a storm, Jesus first rebuked their lack of faith, then rebuked the wind and the waves (Matthew 8:23-27). As long as we are with Jesus, there is nothing to fear. Will Jesus say to you “O ye of little faith”?

Do not be anxious about anything

We can count God to provide for our needs, protect us from evil, guide us, and keep our souls secure for eternity. We may not be able to prevent anxious thoughts from entering our minds, but we can practice the right response. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to “not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Today’s Revival Prayer

Father, we come before you now, casting our every care on you, knowing that you care about even the smallest details of our lives. Because you work all things out for our good, we do not have to be anxious about anything. So we bring our concerns and anxieties to you now, asking you – the God that is bigger than any problem – to work on our behalf so that you are glorified in this problem that gives us concern. We thank you and praise your for your presence that gives us strength, your love that never ends, your provision that sees to our needs, your protection from evil, and for keeping our souls safe in your for all eternity. Helps us to seek you first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Keeping Ministry Professionals and Lay-Leaders in Ministry

Today’s quote from the Self-Care Blog Series:

Physical Self Care:

“For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church.”  Ephesians 5:29 (HCSB)

Today’s quote:

“It’s easy to neglect taking care of our bodies when we are busy doing the work of God. But if we expect to care for the people God places in our ministry path, then we need to be taking care of our own physical needs so that our lack of physical self-care doesn’t hinder our ministry work.— Julia Bruce

coronavirus prayer guide logoJoin us in 52 days of prayer as each day we pray for a different state. Commit to one day of fasting on the day we unite in prayer for your state. On the day we pray for your state, get a group of your Christian family and friends together via phone or video conference and lead a prayer meeting for your sate. As you pray each day pray for the following:

  1. Pray for God to remove the Coronavirus from that state. We will pray for states in order of most affected to least affected as reported on the World Health Organization Website.
  2. Pray for God to heal each person who has the virus in the state for which we are praying
  3. Pray for the family members who have lost loved ones due to the virus. Ask God to comfort them and to make His presence known to them.
  4. Pray for God to humble the hearts of His people and that they will seek His face with all their heart, mind, and soul
  5. Pray for repentant hearts that will confess any sin and to be willing to turn from sin and set their minds on Christ
  6. Ask God to hear us from Heaven, to forgive our sin (both individually and nationally) and heal our land
  7. Invite God to be Lord in our nation, our government, and in our homes

Don’t forget to learn this week’s memory verse:

Memorize and hide in your heart one memory verse each week in 2020. If you didn’t start the challenge at the beginning of the year, just jump in now and be sure to sign up to get our weekly Memory verse in your email so you don’t miss a week.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  For the past few  weeks, we have been focusing on repentance. This week, we look at the spiritual transformation that takes place when we surrender our heart to God.

This week’s memory verse:

2 Chronicles 20:9

‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

2 Corinthians 9:7. Are you a cheerful giver?

by Julia Bruce

2 Corinthians 9 7

Think about your emotions and motives this past Sunday as the offering plate was passed at church. How did you feel about placing your tithing envelope in the plate? Or maybe you passed it on to the next person without giving anything. What about when your pastor preaches a series on stewardship? Do you stay home on those Sundays? What about when the church leadership team wants to start a building campaign or they ask for additional funds to send to missionaries?

It is not uncommon for people to get very “touchy” when the subject of money comes up. It can be easier to give when there is plenty of income left after expenses, but for some it doesn’t matter how much is in the bank, they really don’t want to give it to the church. They might give it, but its for the wrong reason. Instead of being a cheerful giver, giving becomes obligatory. What about when you’re living paycheck to paycheck? Sometimes we want to give, but the money just isn’t there and if we do give it, there isn’t enough for groceries or the light bill. Instead of being a cheerful giver, giving is more of a burden.

For some people, they have never really been taught the principal of tithing and don’t understand that God tells us to tithe. Or maybe they know it, but choose not to. If you fall in this category, then I’d like to point you to Malachi 3:8-10. In these verses, God accuses the Israelites of robbing Him. But they didn’t see how they were guilty and asked, “How do we rob You?” God’s reply was, “By not making the payments of the tenth and the contributions.” So choosing not to tithe is not only a sin, but it is also robbing God. (click to tweet)

Maybe you want to tithe, but you just don’t have 10% available to give, but you give what you can. Maybe it’s only $5 or even just $1 – but if the giving flows from a heart of love for God and His Church, then our giving becomes an act of worship – and that is why God loves a cheerful giver. (Click to tweet) If you find yourself struggling with the ability to tithe, remember the story found in Mark 12:41-44:

Image result for jesus poor woman offering

“Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on.”

09 17 titheIt really doesn’t matter how much you give. It can be all you have or 1% of what you have. God knows the motive behind your giving. You can be the biggest tither in the church, but if your motive isn’t right, you’re tithe does not please God. You can tithe out of duty and grumble about it and your tithe would be about as accepted by God as Cain’s was in the book of Genesis. If you attempt to hold your tithe “hostage” to get the church leadership to do things the way you want, God doesn’t honor your tithe either. Instead as soon as the money is placed in the offering plate, we need to release any feelings of ownership and realize that it was God’s in the first place. We need to not have a mindset that we gave to the church — but that we gave back to God out of the provisions He has blessed us with. Rather than tithing out of a sense of duty or obligation we need to envision how every dollar we give goes to the ministry that God has called the church to fulfill, which includes saving the lost, ministering to those who are hurting, sending the good news of the gospel around the world, feeding the hungry, and so much more. The mission of the church is huge so as we give we should ask God to take the money we give and multiply it just like the five loaves and two fish. The boy who gave his lunch didn’t give money, but he gave everything he had and Jesus blessed it and fed more than 5000 people. He can do the same with the tithe that we give.

09 17 joyIf tithing does not bring you joy, you need a different point of view of what the tithe is. It is basically giving God 10% of your earnings through your local church. However, it is also more than that. God, who is entirely self-sufficient, does not require our money to sustain Him in any way. Acts 17:25, Psalm 50:10-12, and Romans 11:35 tell us that He is not “served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything.” God does not need out money. Instead, it is about trusting God to meet our needs and worshiping Him as we joyfully give back to Him out of what He has provided.

Image result for happy personWe can be cheerful givers when we trust God and believe that he will supply all of our needs (Philippians 4:19). Tithing should be an expression of a heart that trusts Him with providing for our finances and needs – even when the numbers don’t add up. All of us experience ups and downs with our finances, but we can trust God to provide for our every need. Because we trust Him, we give to Him first – before we pay the bills, buy the groceries and give the kids an allowance.

When can be cheerful givers when our giving becomes an act of worship. When we reflect on what Christ has done for us on the cross, our giving should be a natural response to His gracious gift of salvation and be an expression of our love and devotion for Him as we willingly and joyful give back to Him from what He has blessed us with as we give him praise and thanksgiving for what He has provided. When we see tithing from this point of view we can all be cheerful givers.
