Denying Jesus when Life is Hard
Isn’t it easy to say with our mouth that we are willing to follow Jesus anywhere and at any cost? Our heart may even mean it at the time we say it. When Peter said, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You” he probably meant it – with all His heart. But when the time came, Peter denied knowing Him. When the path gets difficult or even leads to the cross, what about then? Would you stand with Jesus or deny Him? Most of us would be just like Peter and guilty of denying Jesus.
Peter caught denying Jesus
Peter, one of Jesus’ followers and disciples, is also the same Peter that Jesus said “Upon this rock, I will build my church.” Yet as Jesus was on trial and his crucifixion was just hours away, Peter was recognized as one of Jesus’ followers three times. Each time, he denies he knows who Jesus is. When life got hard and dangerous, Peter was caught denying Jesus. It’s always easy to confess Jesus as Lord in church or among your Christian friends and family. But what about when life gets hard? For Peter, as soon as the rooster crowed, Jesus looked at Peter and Peter remembered that Jesus had told him he would deny Jesus three times. Peter then weeps in sorrow.
Would you be caught confessing or denying Jesus?
Today, it’s easy to be a follower of Jesus within our church walls, small groups, and among our Christian friends. But what about out in the world? Do your coworkers know that Jesus is Lord of your life? Or do you participate in the office gossip, use curse words, and tell dirty jokes? Does your boss see you as a person of integrity or do you cheat on the time you put in, take company property, and lie to cover up mistakes? If you worked for a company that said you could lose your job because you are a Christian, would you still have a job? If you were on trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you? In the witness stand, would you confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior or would you be heard denying Him?
Just as Jesus asked his disciples, “Whom do you say that I am?” so He is asking you today.
God, help me today to walk with integrity, to honor and glorify you in my words and actions. May all I do and say confess you as Lord. Give me courage to follow you wherever you lead me, even if the path is difficult and full of trials. May I reflect your image so that there is no doubt to anyone that I am a child of God. Strengthen me and give me boldness so that I am never caught denying Jesus – the One who sacrificed His life for me.

1 Peter 1:5 tells us that we are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” In Jeremiah 31:3, God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.” Everlasting and faithful love – that’s God’s love for us!
God’s love is forever
God’s love is forever. He loved us even while we were yet sinners and sent Jesus to die for us (Romans 5:8). And in John 15:13, we find that there is no greater love than to lay down ones life for their friends, which is exactly what Jesus did for us. Psalm 36:5 says, “Lord, Your faithful love reaches to heaven, Your faithfulness to the clouds.” There simply is no greater or deeper love than what God feels for us as His children. Because of His love, how could we not love Him in return with all of our heart, soul, and might?
So be assured, my friend, that no matter what you are going through or how much you might have messed up, (Yes! Even that thing your thinking of!) God loves you. Not convinced yet? Look at this long list of Bible people who messed up, but God chose to use them anyway:
People in the Bible who Messed up and still experienced God’s love
Old Testament Men
David, was guilty of murder, lying, adultery, and coveting and stealing a neighbor’s wife. Yet he confessed His sins and God forgave him. God called David “a man after his own heart” and it was through David’s ancestral line that Jesus was born.
Moses was a murderer and had a stuttering problem, but God used him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land.
Jonah ran from God, but after three days in the belly of a fish, the fish spat him out and Jonah went to Nineveh as God had told him to – as a result the city repented and God spared them from His destruction.
Jacob was a cheater but God would change his name to Israel his 12 sons would become the 12 tribes of Israel.
Noah, who was the only righteous man left on earth and God saved from the flood got drunk and slept naked, but through him the human race survived.
Gideon was insecure and had to test God with a fleece rather than just trusting what God said. But God used him to defeat Israel’s enemies.
Abraham was old and guilty of taking part in Sarah’s solution to God’s promise, but he became the father of the nation of Israel.
Elijah was moody and had a problem with depression – even to the point of wanting to die, but God did many miracles through him.
Old Testament Women
Rahab was a prostitute but it would be through her ancestral line that Jesus would be born.
Tamar dressed up as a prostitute and coerced her father-in-law, Judah, to have sex with her and she bore twin sons. One of these sons was the ancestor of King David, a direct lineage to Christ.
Sarah was impatient and tried to help God out with the promise of child and gave her maid to Abraham so that he could father a child through her. Then she ended up hating her maid out of jealousy. But in God’s timing, Sarah had her own child, Isaac and from them the entire nation of Israel.
New Testament
Saul, before his Damascus Road experience, persecuted and killed Christians. Yet once He encountered Jesus, God used Paul to spread the gospel to the Gentiles.
Peter denied knowing Jesus when Jesus was on trial, but Jesus chose Him to be the rock that He would build His church on and Peter spent the rest of his life leading others to Christ.
Martha was a worrier, but she, along with her brother Lazarus and sister Mary, Â was one of Jesus’ closest friends
Thomas was a doubter, but he was still one of the 12 disciples
The Woman at the Well had five previous husbands and the man she was living with when she encountered Jesus at the well she wasn’t married to, but she led her entire village to Christ
The Woman caught in adultery discovered the grace and forgiveness of God. When others condemned her to being stoned to death, Jesus forgave her.
The common denominator is God’s Love
The one thing that all these people had in common was the God loved them and chose to use them as part of His plan to redeem the lost. There is nothing we can do to separate us from the love of God and regardless of what sins are in your past, God can redeem and use you too.
God’s Love Is Unfailing
In 1981, Evie Karlssen wrote a beautiful song called “Unfailing Love” Take a moment and listen to the song on YouTube as you read the lyrics and contemplate the everlasting and faithful love of God .
Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul, In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole. I almost can’t believe its true, Unfailing love and yet I know He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.
If the highest mountains turn to ashes, If the mighty rivers should run dry Should sun and moon grow dim, I still will trust in him, He’s watching from above, I’m resting in his love.
Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul, In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole. I almost can’t believe its true, Unfailing love and yet I know He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.

After Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch, they reported to the church on what God had been doing in Asia, especially in the Gentiles coming to faith in Christ. While they were there, some men from Judea came to Antioch and wanted to add to the requirements of salvation saying that the Gentiles couldn’t really be saved if they did not follow the practice of circumcision that God gave to Moses. Circumcision was a sign of the covenant made between God and Abraham, but it couldn’t save him. Abraham had to believe the same as we do. Rituals, regardless of what they are do no save us and when we add to God’s plan, conflict occurs. A debate ensued between Paul and these Judeans that ended with them sending Paul to Jerusalem for clarification.
Paul brings the conflict over rituals to the Jerusalem Council
Jerusalem, at this time, was still the center of the Christian movement and the apostles and elders were there. So Paul brought his case of rituals being required for salvation to the Jerusalem Council. Given that Christianity has its roots in Jewish history and customs, it is understandable that the church had to grapple with this issue as it transitioned from Old Testament Covenant to the New Testament Covenant. Isn’t the same true in our churches today. When make traditions and rituals and then attempt to change them, churches will split over them.
Peter addresses the conflict over rituals
After “much dispute,” Peter stood up and presented the Council with four truths:
1. God had chosen Peter to proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles
We find Peter’s call to spread the gospel to the Gentiles in Acts 10:1-43. This is where Peter has the vision of clean and unclean food items that are lowered on sheet from heaven and God instructs Peter to “kill and eat.” Peter replies with “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” The voice speaks to Peter again and says, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” Shortly before this vision, Cornelius, a Roman centurion has a vision of his own and voice tells him to send men to Peter and bring Peter back to his home. He does so. The men arrive at the house Peter is staying at and explains why they are there and Peter goes back with them and preaches Jesus to Cornelius’ entire household.
If God gave instruction that what he cleansed should not be called common or unclean, then the Gentiles have the same rights to salvation that the Jews do and God was offering the free gift of salvation to all mankind.
2. The Gentiles believed and they placed their faith in Jesus.
Peter tells the Jerusalem Council that the Gentiles in Cornelius’ home believed – just as the Jews did. In fact, that is why Peter was sent to them. We find at the beginning of Acts 10 that Cornelius was a devout man who feared God and prayed to God always. Cornelius and his household had already chosen to believe. Peter was sent to disciple them.
Philip had already been in Caesarea and preached the Gospel there.
If we look backwards in Acts a little further we find that Philip had already been in Caesarea preaching to the Gentiles. Perhaps this was when Cornelius and his household placed their faith in Jesus. But there probably were not many strong Christians in Caesarea at the time and Cornelius was hungry to know more about God. So he had been praying. We don’t learn until verse 33 exactly what he had been praying for. He told Peter, “So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God.”
There was not a LifeWay Christian Bookstore where Cornelius could run down to pick up so he could read about God. There wasn’t a Christianbook Distributors where he could order a Bible to be sent to him. He needed someone to tell him about God and he was praying for God to send that person. God nominated Peter – and Peter went.
3. When the Gentiles believe, they received the Holy Spirit
In verse 44 of Acts 10, it says that while Peter was still speaking the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. The result of Peter preaching to Cornelius’ friends and family was they all believed and then they received the Holy Spirit – just as the Jews had. They had not been circumcised between believing and receiving. There had been no rituals performed. Peter was still speaking. He hadn’t finished his sermon. But the Holy Spirit showed up. And I think that’s the point Peter is making. Rituals were not a part of the Gentile salvation experience in Caesarea. The believed, placed their faith in Christ, and the Holy Spirit showed up.
4. The pattern of Gentile conversion was the same as it was for the Jewish believers.
God was making no ethnic distinctions in the building of His church. The process was the same whether Jew or Gentile. Whenever we attempt to add rituals or anything else to the gospel, we can expect conflict. Anytime we attempt to make salvation about what we do and not what Jesus did, then we are guilty of trying to earn salvation. But salvation is a free gift. Jesus paid the price for our sins and our redemption is His free gift to us. Salvation = Jesus + nothing. There is absolutely nothing we can do on our part to earn salvation. We just have to reach out and accept God’s gracious gift by placing our faith in Christ. Peter’s argument to the Jerusalem Council was that was exactly what the Gentiles had done. They believed. Therefore, they received the Holy Spirit.
No Rituals Involved
Based on these four things, Peter said the men that came from Judea and claimed the Gentiles had to be circumcised in order to be saved were testing God and putting a burden on the Gentile converts that which neither the Jewish fathers or the Jews of their day could bear (Acts 15:10). Since it is impossible to perfectly keep the law, Peter insisted that salvation is only through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ as a free gift – no strings attached. There’s no fine print. No rituals involved. We simply believe and accept Jesus’ forgiveness of our sins and place our faith in Him.
Salvation is not acquired through rituals but is received Only By Grace through Faith
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me.”
Rituals such as circumcision, baptism, partaking of the Lord’s Supper, or any good works cannot save anyone. It is only by placing our faith in God’s gracious sacrifice of Jesus that we become a Christian.

Why is daily Bible reading important?
Bible Reading is vitally important to growing spiritually and keeping our spiritual selves full. God wants us to hide His Word in our hearts, meditate on it and apply it to our lives. When we have a plan, we are more likely to follow through. Here are eight reasons you should have a daily Bible Reading plan:
We can find His will for our lives
Bible reading is our spiritual nourishment
It helps us be able to discern the thoughts and intents of our heart.
The Bible instructs us in righteousness
It gives us power to overcome trials, heartaches, and sin
God gives us many promises, but you won’t know them unless you read about them, memorize them, and know if it’s a promise intended for us today
God reveals Himself to us and we learn about Him which strengthens our relationship with Him
He also speaks to us through His Word.
