Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love

Have you ever messed up so bad that you felt as if God couldn’t love you? The good news is it’s impossible for a Christian to ever be separated from God’s love. To believe otherwise is to believe a lie straight from Satan. Satan would love for you to believe that it’s impossible for God to love you. He wants you to live defeated. He wants to steal your joy. Satan wants you to waller around in guilt and shame rather than living a victorious life in Christ.(Click to tweet)Why? Because then you are not winning others to Christ. But Paul tells us in the second half of Romans 8 that there is nothing that can separate us from the love God.

Because of God’s love for us, who can be against us?

In Verse 31 of Romans 8, Paul starts out asking, “If God is for us, who can be against us? We can have a sure reality that God is on our side. He is for us. Sometimes it seems that everyone and everything is against us. The world, political people who try to stamp our Christianity, Satan, secularist, false religions, our enemies, and even our own sinful nature flesh. But God is sovereign and He loves us and through Him we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) and there is nothing that can separate us from His love. Jesus conquered death and Satan on the cross and in doing so we have assurance that nothing can change God’s love or purpose for us. (Click to tweet)

1 Peter 1:5 tells us that we are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” In Jeremiah 31:3, God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.” Everlasting and faithful love – that’s God’s love for us!

God’s love is forever

God’s love is forever. He loved us even while we were yet sinners and sent Jesus to die for us (Romans 5:8). And in John 15:13, we find that there is no greater love than to lay down ones life for their friends, which is exactly what Jesus did for us. Psalm 36:5 says, “Lord, Your faithful love reaches to heaven, Your faithfulness to the clouds.” There simply is no greater or deeper love than what God feels for us as His children. Because of His love, how could we not love Him in return with all of our heart, soul, and might?

So be assured, my friend, that no matter what you are going through or how much you might have messed up, (Yes! Even that thing your thinking of!) God loves you. Not convinced yet? Look at this long list of Bible people who messed up, but God chose to use them anyway:

People in the Bible who Messed up and still experienced God’s love

Old Testament Men

  • David, was guilty of murder, lying, adultery, and coveting and stealing a neighbor’s wife. Yet he confessed His sins and God forgave him. God called David “a man after his own heart” and it was through David’s ancestral line that Jesus was born.
  • Moses was a murderer and had a stuttering problem, but God used him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land.
  • Jonah ran from God, but after three days in the belly of a fish, the fish spat him out and Jonah went to Nineveh as God had told him to – as a result the city repented and God spared them from His destruction.
  • Jacob was a cheater but God would change his name to Israel his 12 sons would become the 12 tribes of Israel.
  • Noah, who was the only righteous man left on earth and God saved from the flood got drunk and slept naked, but through him the human race survived.
  • Gideon was insecure and had to test God with a fleece rather than just trusting what God said. But God used him to defeat Israel’s enemies.
  • Abraham was old and guilty of taking part in Sarah’s solution to God’s promise, but he became the father of the nation of Israel.
  • Elijah was moody and had a problem with depression – even to the point of wanting to die, but God did many miracles through him.

Old Testament Women

  • Rahab was a prostitute but it would be through her ancestral line that Jesus would be born.
  • Tamar dressed up as a prostitute and coerced her father-in-law, Judah, to have sex with her and she bore twin sons. One of these sons was the ancestor of King David, a direct lineage to Christ.
  • Sarah was impatient and tried to help God out with the promise of child and gave her maid to Abraham so that he could father a child through her. Then she ended up hating her maid out of jealousy. But in God’s timing, Sarah had her own child, Isaac and from them the entire nation of Israel.

New Testament

  • Saul, before his Damascus Road experience, persecuted and killed Christians. Yet once He encountered Jesus, God used Paul to spread the gospel to the Gentiles.
  • Peter denied knowing Jesus when Jesus was on trial, but Jesus chose Him to be the rock that He would build His church on and Peter spent the rest of his life leading others to Christ.
  • Martha was a worrier, but she, along with her brother Lazarus and sister Mary,  was one of Jesus’ closest friends
  • Thomas was a doubter, but he was still one of the 12 disciples
  • The Woman at the Well had five previous husbands and the man she was living with when she encountered Jesus at the well she wasn’t married to, but she led her entire village to Christ
  • The Woman caught in adultery discovered the grace and forgiveness of God. When others condemned her to being stoned to death, Jesus forgave her.

The common denominator is God’s Love

The one thing that all these people had in common was the God loved them and chose to use them as part of His plan to redeem the lost. There is nothing we can do to separate us from the love of God and regardless of what sins are in your past, God can redeem and use you too.

God’s Love Is Unfailing

In 1981, Evie Karlssen wrote a beautiful song called “Unfailing Love” Take a moment and listen to the song on YouTube as you read the lyrics and contemplate the everlasting and faithful love of God .

Evie – Unfailing Love (1981, Vinyl) - Discogs

Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul,
In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole.
I almost can’t believe its true,
Unfailing love and yet I know
He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.

If the highest mountains turn to ashes,
If the mighty rivers should run dry
Should sun and moon grow dim,
I still will trust in him,
He’s watching from above,
I’m resting in his love.

Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul,
In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole.
I almost can’t believe its true,
Unfailing love and yet I know
He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.

John 16:33. The Overcomer

John 16:33 Overcomer

When God first created the earth and placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the world was a perfect place. But the moment Eve sinned, the world became a broken place and has, over time, become more and more broken then ever. Jesus never promised that following Him would make life easy. In fact, He told His disciples that they would have tribulation as long as they were in the world. We definitely see tribulations in our world every day, but thankfully, we have an overcomer.

Jesus never promised that following Him would make life easy. In fact, He told His disciples that they would have tribulation as long as they were in the world.

If we were to define “tribulation, ” it would be “a state of great trouble or suffering. Yes, the Bible talks about the great tribulation that is associated with the rapture of all the Christians from this world, but in this verse, Jesus was telling his disciples to expect trouble – even then in their day.

Today’s Tribulations

Today, one only has to turn the news on to hear countless stories of great trouble or suffering. We experience it when the news from the doctor isn’t what we wanted to hear. We experience it when we lose a job or a loved one. Or we experience it when we don’t get the promotion. We experience it through an unexpected and very expensive car repair. We experience it through divorce. It occurs when there is a miscarriage. From domestic violence to mass shootings, from pandemics to racial issues, tribulations are everywhere we turn. As long as Satan and his demons have free reign in this world, there will be tribulations. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:10 that we can expect weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.

The disciples all definitely experienced tribulation. While the Bible only tells how two of them died, but there are reports from history and legends that tell us what happened to them.

What happened to the disciples? The following disciples were crucified:

  • Peter was martyred in Rome about 66 AD  – crucified, upside down at his request
  • Andrew went to the “land of the man-eaters” (now known as the Soviet Union) where he is claimed to be the first to bring the gospel to that area. He also preached in Asia Minor, modern-day Tureky, and in Greece, where he is said to have been crucified.
  • Philip is said to have preached in North Africa and then Asia Minor where he converted the wife of a Roman proconsul. In retaliation the proconsul had Philip arrested. Some accounts indicate he was stoned to death and others indicate he was crucified upside down while still continuing to preach the gospel.
  • Bartholomew preached in India with Thomas, as well as Armenia, Ethiopia, and Southern Arabia. There are various accounts of his death, but they all agree that he was martyred by crucifixion, also upside down.

The other martyred disciples:

  • Thomas appears to have been most active east of Syria and traditions have him going as far as east India to spread the gospel. It is claimed that he died there when he was pierced through with the spears of four soldiers.
  • Matthew (the tax collector and author of the Gospel of Matthew) preached in Persia and Ethiopia. Some reports say he was not martyred while others indicate he was stabbed to death in Ethiopia.
  • James, the son of Alpheus is believed to have preached in Syria. The Jewish historian Josephus reports that he was stoned and then clubbed to death.
  • Simon the Zealot may have ministered in Persia where he was killed because he refused to sacrifice to the sun god. No documentation could be found regarding how he was killed.

Only One Disciples Died a Natural Death

John is the only one believed to have died a natural death from old age – but they did try to kill him. It is believed that he was the leader of the church in Ephesus and that he took Mary, Jesus’ mother, into his home when Jesus was crucified. When Christians were being persecuted under Domitian rule, he was cast into boiling oil at Rome and survived. He was then exiled to the island of Patmos where he wrote the book of Revelation.

Two identified Disciples after Jesus’ Death

After Jesus death, two additional disciples are identified in the Bible. The disciples chose to replace Judas who had betrayed Jesus. Matthais became the 12 disciple. Then on the Road to Damascus, Jesus Himself confronted Saul, commissioned him and changed his name to Paul. What does history tell us about these two disciples?

  • Matthais took the place of Judas, the betrayer of Jesus. Traditionally, it is believed that he preached in Syria with Andrew and was put to death by burning.
  • Paul, while not a disciple until after Jesus ascended into heaven, was responsible for the writing of many of the New Testament books of the Bible. He was a missionary and traveled to several countries to spread the gospel. Eventually, he was imprisoned and martyred in Rome about 66 AD under Emperor Nero who had him beheaded.

Man of Sorrows

If these disciples who followed Jesus experienced tribulation, why do people today think that the Christian life is rosy and sunshine? While Jesus walked the earth, he did not go through life as a “positive-thinker.” Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as a man of sorrows. If we read prophecy found Isaiah 52:13-53:12 we can see how much sorrow and suffering the Messiah would endure. He suffered first by leaving the glories of heaven and entering the human race as a man. Then He suffered all the things that humanity suffers, and then finally He suffered the wrath of God as the sin-bearer. Such suffering must have been all the more acute for Him, given His perfect nature. Who of us could ever understand the depths of what His righteous spirit suffered as He lived among fallen humanity?

The Joy Set Before Him

Even though Jesus suffered greatly, He did not live with depression or go around with a long face. Hebrews 12:2 tell us He could rejoice in His sufferings as He focused on the final outcome. In this verse we find that Jesus is “the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Just before going to the cross, Jesus and the disciples celebrated the Passover together in the upper room. There He washed the disciples feet, Jesus identified Judas as His betrayer, He broke the bread and shared the wine. But then the Bible tells us they sang a hymn of praise. Jesus knew that as they walked out of the upper room and into the garden to pray that he would be arrested and falsely tried. He knew everything He was about to endure and that He would die – and yet He could sing a hymn of praise. Why? Because He would have completed the task He came to earth to do – to bring salvation to us. He would become our overcomer.

The Simple Truth

The simple truth is that life is hard. There is no such thing as a “name it and claim” theology and anyone who preaches it, is a false teacher. Becoming a Christian doesn’t make life easy. In fact, it can make it harder. In John 15:19 Jesus warns us with the following: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” Because we live in a broken world that is ruled by sin and Satan, we can expect that life will be hard. Jesus very clearly informed us in John 16:33 that we would have tribulation in this world.

The Good News

The good news is that Jesus didn’t put the period to the sentence at that point, but follows it with the word, “but.” Yes, we will have tribulation, but Jesus said we should be of good cheer. Why? Because Jesus has overcome the world and because He is our overcomer, we can have hope. Jesus overcame the world when he defeated Satan through His sacrificial death on the cross. Because of the cross, the power of sin has been defeated and eternal life is available to all who believe in Him. Because Jesus is the overcomer, we have the opportunity to accept the gift of eternal life that He offers to every person. We just have to accept it by faith. Then He becomes our overcomer.

Finding Peace in Tribulations

As a Christian, death does not get the final say. The world does not get the final say. No matter what we face in this life, it is temporary and when we step from this life into eternal life, all that was suffered here will be no more. It isn’t that we won’t have troubles in this life, but that we can have peace in the trouble as we go through them in the strength of God because of what Jesus did to make our eternal life secure. In John 16:20 Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.” Eternal joy, as we spend eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior who is our overcomer.

Jesus said we would have tribulation in this world. Thankfully, He didn’t put the period there, but follows it with “but.” We will have tribulation, but we should be of good cheer because He overcame the world & because He did, we have hope.

Isaiah 52:7. Beautiful feet

by Julia Bruce

13 Isaiah 52 7

Have you ever said, “I have good new and bad news.” Well, there was one young man who picked up his wife from the airport. They had been trying for a while to get pregnant. As they drove away from the airport, the wife said, “Good news! I’m pregnant!” Delighted, the young father-to-be looked at the sonogram and said, “Wait, what’s that?” The expectant mom smiled and said, “That’s the other one…” After pulling over to prevent a wreck the young couple decided to name them Alexis and Zoe, A-Z.

Image result for good newsEveryone loves good news and we all dread bad news. This was even true back in the day of Solomon who wrote in Proverbs 15:30, “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.”

The Bible is full of good news – from cover to cover. And it is full of news that isn’t so good.

  • There is good news that God created the heavens and the earth; but there is bad news of Adam and Eve’s first sin.
  • There is good news of how to build a boat; but bad news that God is going to destroy the earth with a flood.
  • There is the good news to Abraham that God will give him a son; but bad news that God wants him to sacrifice his only son – followed by the good news of “WAIT! Here is a ram to sacrifice instead.”
  • There is the good news for Joseph who was promoted to head of house only to then get the bad news that he was on his way to prison even though he was innocent.
  • Joseph gave the king of Egypt the good news of 7 years of plenty, which was followed by the bad news of 7 years of famine, which resulted in the good news of Joseph becoming 2nd in command of all of Egypt.
  • There is the good news of the walls of Jericho that fall (seemingly) by themselves but before that came the bad news from the spies about giants too big, which then was followed by the bad news from God to turn around and wonder in the wilderness for 40 years.
  • There is the good news about how fire fell from heaven and consumed a drenched sacrifice, but then the bad news from Queen Jezebel that she would hunt down and kill Elijah.
  • There is the good news of Queen Esther saving her people from annihilation followed by the bad news of Haman being hung on his own gallows he had built for Esther’s uncle.
  • There is the good news of Ruth meeting and marrying Boaz; but first came the bad news of becoming a widow.
  • There is the good news of the city of Nineveh repenting of their sins and God changing his mind about destroying them; but before that was the bad news of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish and then barfed up. (EEWW!)
  • There is the good news of an angel telling Mary she was highly favored and chosen to be the mother of God’s son, followed by Mary having to explain to Joseph she was pregnant.
  • There is the good news given to the shepherds about the birth of Jesus which was followed by a decree from King Herod to kill on the male children 2 years and younger.
  • There is the good news of all the miracles and wonders that Jesus did, followed by the bad news of Him being betrayed by one of his own, crucified and died. But then there is the glorious news of his resurrection.
  • There is the good news of eternal life for those who believe by faith and accept Jesus as Savior and there is bad news for those who reject Him.
  • There is the good news of Jesus coming and again and the bad news for those who are left behind.

Today, we can turn on the TV, open an app, or browse the internet for all the news from around the world – some more reliable than others. But in Bible days, news traveled by word of mouth – which is only reliable as the mouth that is speaking and the brain that remembers what the mouth was supposed to say. As early as a few centuries before Jesus, the Romans began to release something similar to what we call a newspaper. They had the Acta Diurna that reported on what the Roman army was doing. The Acta Senatus reported on the Roman Senate. The Acta Publica reported on trials, sacrifices, obits, and the like. However, without the printing press, there was no Roman youth who went door to door every morning to toss the paper in a subscriber’s driveway. Instead they were posted in public places periodically. From there news-hungry humans and developed and grown the concept of the newspaper all the way up to today’s 24-hour continuous coverage on CNN and Fox News. Yet still, even today the reliability of the news depends only on the integrity of the reporter. And it seems that there is much more bad news reported than good news.

13 cttPerhaps the best news we could ever hear comes from one who says, “Repent, and believe the good news!”  In the midst of world full of bad news, how refreshing it is to hear good news. John the Baptist and Jesus proclaimed the good news that the Kingdom of God was near. God’s message of the New Testament is “Good News.” The first four books of the Bible are called the Gospels. The word gospel means “Good news.” Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines “gospel” as “a good or joyful message.”

We all find a birth announcement as good news. The birth of Jesus was such good news that an angel told the shepherds about it and then a multitude of angels sang from a heavenly choir. Obituaries, on the other hand, are not often seen as good news (unless you are just a cold-hearted person of an extremely rich relative). When Jesus died, his mother, friends and disciples grieved like anyone would. But then three days later Jesus rose from the dead and the news was the best news ever. This is the good news that is available to all of us today – salvation and everlasting life simply by having faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:9-10 says, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” To the church at Corinth, Paul wrote, “I told the Good News to you….For I delivered to you first of all that which also I received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried; and that he has been raised on the third day according to the scriptures. (1 Corinthians 15:2-4).

Since we have raised the question of the reliability of news – how reliable is the news of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection? The Bible gives us several eyewitnesses who saw Jesus alive after he was dead and buried:

  • Mary Magdalene (John 20:14-16)
  • Mary, the mother of James along with Salome and Joanna (Matthew 28:9)
  • Peter (Luke 24:34)
  • Two Disciples on the Emmaus Road (Luke 24:13-16)
  • The Disciples with Thomas Absent. (John 20:19-24)
  • All of the Disciples (with Thomas this time) eight days later (John 20:26-28)
  • Seven of the Disciples at the Sea of Galilee (John 21:1-2)
  • The Eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee (Matthew 28:16-17)
  • Over 500 people at once (1 Corinthians 15:6)
  • James, Jesus’ half-brother followed by all the apostles (1 Corinthians 15:7)
  • Saul after Jesus’ ascension (Acts 9:3-5)

Additionally, Luke, who wrote the book of Acts wrote in Acts 1:3, “To these he also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Jesus also spoke of his own resurrection in Luke 24:39 and Revelation 1:18.

In Lee Strobel’s book The Case for Christ (which is also now a movie), he writes his own story of coming to faith. Strobel, a former editor at the Chicago Tribune and confirmed atheist begins to try to prove that Jesus of Nazareth was really the Son of God following his wife’s salvation. Using his reporter skills, he interviews biblical scholars seeking historical evidence (“Can the Biographies of Jesus be Trusted?”), scientific evidence (“Does archaeology confirm or contradict Jesus’ biographies?”), and psychiatric evidence (“Was Jesus crazy when He claimed to be the Son of God?”). Instead of proving the non-existence of Jesus, Lee becomes thoroughly  convinced that Jesus is truly the Son of God and that everything the Bible records is true and accurate. If you struggle with believing that Jesus is the Son of God, I encourage you to read the book and watch the movie, then reach a verdict of your own. (see links at the bottom of the page)

Cover_mBOOKING NOW to be a host site for the NEW God, Love & Marshmallow Wars Book Tour & Couples Conference:

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

Romans 8:38-39 Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

Romans 8 38-39

Have you ever messed up so bad that you felt as if God couldn’t love you? The good news is it’s impossible for a Christian to ever be separated from the love God. To believe otherwise is to believe a lie straight from Satan. Satan would love for you to believe that it’s impossible for God to love you. He wants you to live defeated. He wants to steal your joy. He wants you to waller around in guilt and shame rather than living a victorious life in Christ.(Click to tweet) Why? Because then you are not winning others to Christ. But Paul tells us in the second half of Romans 8 that there is nothing that can separate us from the love God.

(Click to tweet) 1 Peter 1:5 tells us that we are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” In Jeremiah 31:3, God says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.”

  • Saul, before his Damascus Road experience, persecuted and killed Christians. Yet once He encountered Jesus, God used Paul to spread the gospel to the Gentiles.
  • David, was guilty of murder, lying, adultery, and coveting and stealing a neighbor’s wife. Yet he confessed His sins and God forgave him. God called David “a man after his own heart” and it was through David’s ancestral line that Jesus was born.
  • Rahab was a prostitute but it would be through her ancestral line that Jesus would be born.
  • Moses was a murderer and had a stuttering problem, but God used him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and into the promised land.
  • Tamar dressed up as a prostitute and coerced her father-in-law, Judah, to have sex with her and she bore twin sons. One of these sons was the ancestor of King David, a direct lineage to Christ.
  • Peter denied knowing Jesus when Jesus was on trial, but Jesus chose Him to be the rock that He would build His church on and Peter spent the rest of his life leading others to Christ.
  • Paul, murdered and persecuted Christians before His Damascus Road encounter with Jesus. God used him to spread the gospel to the Gentiles.
  • Gideon was insecure and had to test God with a fleece rather than just trusting what God said. But God used him to defeat Israel’s enemies.
  • Martha was a worrier, but she, along with her brother Lazarus and sister Mary,  was one of Jesus’ closest friends
  • Thomas was a doubter, but he was still one of the 12 disciples
  • Sarah was impatient and tried to help God out with the promise of child and gave her maid to Abraham so that he could father a child through her. Then she ended up hating her maid out of jealousy. But in God’s timing, Sarah had her own child, Isaac and from them the entire nation of Israel.
  • Abraham was old and guilty of taking part in Sarah’s solution to God’s promise, but he became the father of the nation of Israel.
  • Elijah was moody and had a problem with depression – even to the point of wanting to die, but God did many miracles through him.

The one thing that all these people had in common was the God loved them and chose to use them as part of His plan to redeem the lost. There is nothing we can do to separate us from the love of God and regardless of what sins are in your past, God can redeem and use you too. In1981, Evie Karlssen wrote a beautiful song called “Unfailing Love” Take a moment and listen to the song on YouTube as you read the lyrics and contemplate the love of Christ.

Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul,
In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole.
I almost can’t believe its true,
Unfailing love and yet I know
He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.

If the highest mountains turn to ashes,
If the mighty rivers should run dry
Should sun and moon grow dim,
I still will trust in him,
He’s watching from above,
I’m resting in his love.

Unfailing love flows from his heart and heals my soul,
In spite of who I am, he loves and makes me whole.
I almost can’t believe its true,
Unfailing love and yet I know
He gave his life to give to me unfailing love.

John 16:33. Overcomer

John 16:33 Overcomer

Jun 07 John 16 33

When God first created the earth and placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the world was a perfect place. But the moment Eve sinned, the world became a broken place and has, over time, become more broken then ever. Jesus never promised that following Him would make life easy. In fact, He told His disciples that they would have tribulation as long as they were in the world.

Jesus never promised that following Him would make life easy. In fact, He told His disciples that they would have tribulation as long as they were in the world. — click to tweet

If we were to define “tribulation, ” it would be “a state of great trouble or suffering. Yes, the Bible talks about the great tribulation that is associated with the rapture of all the Christians from this world, but in this verse, Jesus was telling his disciples to expect trouble – even then in their day. Today, one only has to turn the news on to hear countless stories of great trouble or suffering. We experience it when the news from the doctor isn’t what we wanted to hear. We experience it when we lose a job or a loved one. We experience it when we don’t get the promotion. We experience it through an unexpected and very expensive car repair. We experience it through divorce. It occurs when there is a miscarriage. From domestic violence to mass shootings, tribulations are everywhere. As long as Satan and his demons have free reign in this world, there will be tribulations. Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 12:10 that we can expect weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.

The disciples all definitely experienced tribulation. While the Bible only tells how two of them died, but there are reports and legends that tell us what happened to them.

  • Peter was martyred in Rome about 66 AD  – crucified, upside down at his request
  • Andrew went to the “land of the man-eaters” (now known as the Soviet Union) where he is claimed to be the first to bring the gospel to that area. He also preach in Asia Minor, modern-day Tureky, and in Greece, where he is said to have been crucified.
  • Thomas appears to have been most active east of Syria and traditions have him going as far as east India to spread the gospel. It is claimed that he died there when he was pierce through with the spears of four soldiers.
  • Matthew (the tax collector and author of the Gospel of Matthew) preached in Persia and Ethiopia. Some reports say he was not martyred while others indicate he was stabbed to death in Ethiopia.
  • Bartholomew preached in India with Thomas, as well as Armenia, Ethiopia, and Southern Arabia. There are various accounts of his death, but they all agree that he was martyred by crucifixion, also upside down.
  • James, the son of Alpheus is believed to have preached in Syria. The Jewish historian Josephus reports that the was stoned and then clubbed to death.
  • Simon the Zealot may have ministered in Persia where he was killed because he refused to sacrifice to the sun god.
  • John is the only one believed to have died a natural death from old age – but they did try to kill him. It is believed that he was the leader of the church in Ephesus and that he took Mary, Jesus’ mother, into his home when Jesus was crucified. When Christians were being persecuted under Domitian rule, he was cast into boiling oil at Rome and survived. He was exiled to the island of Patmos where he wrote the book of Revelation.
  • Matthais took the place of Judas, the betrayer of Jesus. Traditionally, it is believe that he preached in Syria with Andrew and was put to death by burning.

If these disciples who followed Jesus experienced tribulation, why do people today think that the Christian life is rosy and sunshine? While Jesus walked the earth, he did not go through life as “positive-thinker.” Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as a man of sorrows. The simple truth is that life is hard.

There is no such thing as a “name it and claim” theology and anyone who preaches it, is a false teacher. Jesus very clearly informed us in John 16:33 that we would have tribulation in this world. The good news is that Jesus didn’t put the period to the sentence at that point, but follows it with the word, “but.” Yes, we will have tribulation, but Jesus said we should be of good cheer. Why? Because Jesus has overcome the world and because He did, we can have hope. Jesus overcame the world when he defeated Satan through His sacrificial death on the cross. Because of the cross, the power of sin has been defeated and eternal life is available to all who believe in Him. As a Christian, death does not get the final say. The world does not get the final say. No matter what we face in this life, it is temporary and when we step from this life into eternal life, all that was suffered here will be no more. It isn’t that we won’t have troubles in this life, but that we can have peace in the trouble as we go through it in the strength of God because of what Jesus did to make our eternal life secure. In John 16:20 Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.” Eternal joy, as we spend eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior.

Jesus said we would have tribulation in this world. Thankfully, He didn’t put the period there, but follows it with “but.” We will have tribulation, but we should be of good cheer because He overcame the world & because He did, we have hope. — click to tweet
