Faith: Just a ‘lil dab will do great things

Genuine faith is powerful, even in small doses! In Bible days, the mustard seed was thought to be the smallest of seeds. In contrast, the mulberry tree has a deep, long-reaching root system that would give it life for many hundreds of years and make it very difficult to uproot and move. Yet, Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 17:14-20 that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed they could move mountains and in Luke 17:6, Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed could uproot and move mulberry trees. A ‘lil dab of faith will do great things!

What can a ‘lil dab of faith do?

If you have a little Faith you can move stuff. Jesus says, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, `Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.” You can move a tree.

How’s your faith measuring up?

If we have mustard seed faith, we can see miracles – miracles such as ridding our world of a viral pandemic, miracles such as seeing our nation turn back to God, miracles such as our government leaders seeking God before making decisions that affect our nation. If you haven’t seen God do miracles, then how’s your faith measuring up?

A little faith can move the impossible to become possible. It can move doubt to belief. It can move nothing to become something. A little bit of faith can move emptiness to become fullness. And it can move wilderness lands to become promise lands

What needs moving in your life? Do you have a ‘lil dab of faith?

The necessity of faith

Faith is vital to the Christian life. Paul wrote, “For by grace are you saved through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). In Hebrews 11:6, Paul wrote that it is impossible to please God without faith. Jesus used the very tiny mustard seed to contrast the immeasurable, omnipotent power of God and when it is let loose in the lives of believers who have genuine faith, God will do great things.

Help my unbelief!

In Mark 9, a desperate father had son who had a spirit that made the boy mute. He brought the boy to Jesus and his disciples hoping the boy would be healed. The disciples were unable to heal the boy. As a result, the scribes and disciples were arguing. Jesus approaches them and asks what they are arguing about. The father speaks up and explains the boy’s condition and informs him the disciples were not able to cast the spirit out. We learn that the boy has had the spirit since childhood and it has cast him into fire and water, trying to destroy the boy. The father says to Jesus, “But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

Jesus replies: ““‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

When we find our faith floundering, we too can cry out, “Help my unbelief!” We can also spiritually exercise our faith to help it grow.

Growing seeds of faith

As we see God working through our tiny bit of faith, our faith grows and spreads a deep root system like the mulberry tree, influencing everyone around us and making an eternal impact on God’s kingdom. Our faith also grows as we read and study God’s Word. Peter wrote that God has given us everything we need to grow our knowledge of Him, and it’s found in the Bible.

Whatever mountain stands in front of you, allow your faith to be the avenue through which God works to move the mountain and bring about His perfect plan.

God, thank you that you can do immeasurable things you do with our little bit of faith. Help our faith to grow, creating a deep root system that reaches out to everyone around us.

1 John 4:9-10. Love Revealed

Dec 14

God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

A teacher had been teaching fractions to her students and wanted to know how much they were understanding the concept. So she asked a boy in the class: “Suppose your mother baked a pie and there are six of you — your mother, your father, and four children. What percentage of the pie would you get?”

“One-fifth,” replied the boy.

Disappointed and wondering how she could explain fractions better, she said to the boy, “I’m afraid you don’t know your fractions. Remember, there are six of you.”

“I know,” said the boy, “but you don’t know my mother. She would say she didn’t want any pie so we could have more.”

Christ also wanted us to have more. That’s why He left heaven and came to earth. Before He became our sacrificial-debt-settler, the people had to sacrifice animals over and over again to find redemption for their sins. But that method was a “temporary fix” to our sin problem. But a baby changed everything. Christ was the permanent solution. He is our “more.” Just as the mother’s love for her family is revealed by not wanting pie, so God’s love is revealed for us by sending His One and Only Son to earth as both God and man to live, die, and live again so that our sin debt is paid. So if you’ve ever wondered if God loves you, remember the manger, the cross, and the empty tomb. Because in these, we can have hope.

In 1 John 4:9-10 God reveals His love for us and we see what His love consists of.

God’s love was revealed. A middle-aged couple sat in a pastor’s office attempting marriage counseling as a last resort before divorce. The pastor asks the husband, “why do you want to divorce your wife?”

“I don’t,” the husband responded. “I have no idea why she got this idea in her head.”

The pastor looked at the wife, “Mrs. Smith, why do you want to divorce your husband?”

Angrily, she blurted out, “He just doesn’t love me and I can’t live with a man that doesn’t love me any more. I’m just tired of it.”

The husband’s jaw dropped and the pastor watched as his expression changed from shock to anger of his own before he stood to his feet and said, “Doesn’t love you? How could you get that notion in your head, woman?”

She too stood to her feet, looked him in the eye and said, “Because you never tell me you love me!”

Again the pastor watched as the man’s expression changed from shock to anger and then the man looked at his wife and said, “I have said it every single day! I said it when I worked hard to provide for you. I said it when I have been there for you. I said it when I have stood up for you and defended you. I said it when I gave you children to make sure you would not be alone in your old age. I said it when I made sure we could live on just my income so you could care for our home and our children. I said it when I make sure your car runs properly so you don’t break down.” As his voice continued to rise louder and louder, he ended with, “I say it every moment of every day because single thing I do is because I love you!”

The wife burst into tear and ran into her husband’s arms, surprising him yet again. Instantly, his anger melted as he wrapped his arms around his wife and tenderly said, “Shhh now. Don’t cry.”

The pastor then heard the weeping woman say, “I just needed to hear the words too.”

The husband chuckled and said, “I told you I loved you on our wedding day. If it ever changes, I’ll let you know.”

While the pastor understood the husband was teasing his wife, he cleared his throat and said, “Ummm Tom, I think if I were you I’d say it every day and as often as you can.”

Tom shook the pastor’s hand and said, “Thanks pastor. I got that message loud and clear.”

Nine months later their sixth, and unplanned child arrived.

The husband was revealing his love for his wife, but never said the words. He assumed she understood his love for her through his action. After all, actions speak louder than words – right? And yet, she longed to hear the words. Without the words, the husband is just a good provider, protector, and husband. In her mind, for his actions to reveal love, the she needed to hear the words. The opposite could also be true. Someone could tell us they love us but without the actions that reveal that love, we’d sooner or later begin to doubt the words. To know we are loved we need both the words and the actions that back up the words and reveal the truth of the words.

Over and over again in God’s Word, He tell us He loves us. In fact, the Bible is God’s love letter to us. And yet, we want to know the proof of His love. Have you ever said, “If God love them then why….” That’s a moment that you’re looking for the proof of His love. Or maybe you feel as if you have sinned too much for God to love you. Maybe you’ve been put down and rejected so often in life that you feel like you are not worthy enough for God’s love. Whatever it is that makes you doubt God’s love for you, then I want you to hear the words of 1 John 4:9-10 because God revealed His love to you in the most expressive and expensive way anyone ever could – He sent us Christ. As we celebrate Christmas, we are celebrating God’s revealed love to us. Verse 9 says: “God’s love was revealed among us in this way.” God’s love isn’t a mystery or secret or reserved for a few. He wanted us to know and understand His love for us. He wanted us to have the undeniable proof for when we are scared, feel alone, hurt, grieving, or we just don’t understand why something happened. So… He revealed it. Let’s see how He revealed His love to us, what He revealed, and why He revealed it.

First, God sentDon’t you love to receive a gift from your spouse – especially an unexpected gift for no reason other than because of his/her love for you? God sent us a gift – for no other reason than because He loves us. He didn’t have to send it. If God were only a God of judgment he could look at each one of us and say, “Yup. Another broken, imperfect human. That one sinned too.” And then marks you down for the “doomed” list on the way to hell. But God isn’t a God of only judgment. He is also a God of love, grace, and mercy where we can find forgiveness of our sins because of the gift He sent. That’s what Christmas is all about. Celebrating God’s gift He sent to us. As you unwrap gifts this Christmas, I hope it will remind you of God’s gift to you.

Second, the gift God sent was His One and Only Son into the world. After two miscarriages and nine long months of worry, on the day after Christmas (and the day before my birthday) I finally held in my arms a baby. A tiny little boy, perfectly made. Healthy. The cutest little baby you ever saw. Three and a half years later God surprised with a little baby girl who is the sweetest, lovable, and beautiful girl you’ve ever seen. Today, my son is 23 and my daughter is 20. As they began their college years and then earlier this year my son got his first apartment, I experienced the part of parenting where you send them out into the world. I thought as Rayce packed up his things and moving day came, how did we get here so quickly? I remembered sitting on the couch with him as a brand new baby and marveling over his tiny fingers and toes. I remembers as a little boy when mommy was his world and he wanted to grow up to be an astronaut so he could pick the stars out of the sky and bring them home to mommy. Now, all of a sudden, I have to let him go – into the world. A place of sin and evil. I spent the day helping Rayce move and settle into his apartment and as I drove away towards home, I felt as if I left part of my heart in that apartment. And I thought, did God feel this way sending Jesus into the world? When God sent us His One and Only Son into the world, He was sending us part of His heart. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” Because God and Jesus are one – when Jesus was born, God literally sent a part of who He is to us.

Why did He send his Son to us? So that we might live through Him. Because our brokenness and sin separated us from God and the just wages of our sin is death (Romans 6:23), God provided a way to restore our relationship with Him by sending Jesus to earth. Wages are what we are paid for what we do in life. If you work forty hours on your job, you receive wages for your work in the form of a paycheck. The wages we receive for our sin comes in the form of death and eternal separation from God. So God sent Jesus to us to pay the debt for us. Jesus, who never sinned, took the punishment for our sins in our place. In John 15:13, Jesus said, “No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” If you ever wonder about Christ’s love for you, then just take time to remember what He went through as part of the cross: the mocking, the hatred of the people, the betrayal of Judas, the crown of thorns, the beating that shredded his body, the nails piercing His hands and feet, the hours of hanging on the cross – just for you. At any moment He could have said, “Nope – this is more than I bargained for. I didn’t imagine it would be this bad. I’m not doing this.” He could have instantly vanished and returned to heaven and leave us without any hope – but he stayed, humbly being obedient to His Father’s plan for our redemption and endured the torture of the cross and death – for you. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:8, “He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross.”

John doesn’t just tell us how God revealed His love for us, but in verse 10, he tell us what is not consisted within His love, what is consisted within His love, and what it cost Him to love us.

First, God’s love does not consist of our love for Him. He doesn’t love us because we love Him – He loves us unconditionally – even while we were His enemy. Romans 5:8 says, “But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!” If God only sent Jesus after we loved him, then Jesus would have never been sent. John wrote in 1 John 4:19, We love because He first loved us. It is because He loved us that He sent Jesus. He loves us whether we love Him or not. There is no part of God’s love for us that is dependent on whether we love Him or not.

Second, God’s love consists of His love for us. Even if you hate God – He still loves you enough that He sent Jesus to die for you in your place – and there is nothing that can change it. Jeremiah 31:3 says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Psalms 136:26 says that God’s steadfast love endures forever. Lamentations 3:22 says that “steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.”  Isaiah 54:10 says, “For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

Third, God’s love is both lavish and expensive. It cost him something – His Son. His love for us consists in Jesus being the propitiation for our sins. The Greek word for “propitiation” is hilasmos and basically it is God’s plan that satisfies the payment for our sins. Because God is a holy God, His anger and justice demands that be punished. When Jesus became our propitiation, he became the appeasement or satisfaction for our sin debt toward God. He not only appeased God’s wrath, but also provided reconciliation to Him. He became our substitute, taking on himself all the sins of every person and paid the price through agony and blood that washes away sin. Because Christ willingly became our substitute, we can come to Him by faith, ask Him to forgive us our sins, and surrender our lives to Him as we ask Him to be our Savior. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift.”

With every gift offered, we have a choice to receive and accept the gift or we can decline and reject it. In order for Jesus to be the propitiation for your sins, you much choose to accept His gift through faith. In John 14:6, Jesus said,  “I am the way the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father, but by me.”   There is no other way. Only by faith. You must believe that Jesus is who He said he was – the Son of God. You must recognize that you are a sinner, lost, and eternally separated from God. You must acknowledge that the only way to receive God’s forgiveness is through the sacrificial, shed blood of Jesus who died on the cross for you, was buried, and then rose again three days later. You must ask Him to forgive you of your sins and invite Him to be your Lord and Savior. A Baby changes everything for us. What will you do with the gift God sent? Will Jesus be born in you this Christmas? Will He be your Hope for everlasting life and a relationship with the God who loves you?

Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning? Some say he would become a great moral leader. Others, a social critic. Still others view Jesus as a profound philosopher, a rabbi, a feminist, a prophet, and more. Many are convinced he was the divine Son of God.

Who was he really? And how can you know for sure?

Consulting experts on the Bible, archaeology, and messianic prophecy, award-winning legal journalist Lee Strobel searches out the true identity of the child in the manger. If Jesus really was God in the flesh, then there ought to be credible evidence, including:

  • Eyewitness Evidence – Can the biographies of Jesus be trusted?
  • Scientific Evidence – What does archaeology reveal?
  • Profile Evidence – Did Jesus fulfill the attributes of God?
  • Fingerprint Evidence – Did Jesus uniquely match the identity of the Messiah?

The Case for Christmas invites readers to consider why Christmas matters in the first place. Somewhere beyond the traditions of the holiday lies the truth. This little book is perfect as a gift or for use in ministry during the Christmas season or any other time of the year.

Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we will post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s verse:

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

 Meditate and apply:

  1. God loved the entire world – regardless of race, every single person. It doesn’t matter what your past looks like or your present. We come to God just as we are – filthy and sinful. Isaiah 64:6 says: “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” All of us are sinners. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” But 1 John 1:7 tells us that the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.
  2. Because of His love for us, God allowed His one and only Son, Jesus, to pay our sin debt in our place. Our penalty for sin is death (Romans 6:23), but because Jesus died in our place, God’s gift to us is eternal life (Ephesians 2:8).
  3. Whosoever means – whoever – and that includes you.
  4. God does not want anyone to be lost and die without Him (2 Peter 3:8-10). He does not want anyone to spend eternity in hell. Hell was originally created for Satan and his followers as their penalty for their rebellion as angels in Heaven. In fact, the Bible tells us in 2 Peter 3:9 that God is “longsuffering toward us,” which means He is patient – but when death occurs, His patience is gone.
  5. Everlasting life. We all have an eternity waiting for us after death – either eternal life in Heaven or eternal damnation in hell. The choice is ours to make and we make it in this life. After death, it’s too late to decide. Hebrews 9:27 says: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” According to this verse judgement comes after death with out Christ as Savior. We will only get one earthly lifetime to make our choice for or against Him. We are not going to be reincarnated back into another body to get several more chances to find and accept Jesus this side of heaven. We don’t get to have our loved ones still on earth pray us into heaven. There is no penance or “levels” of hell. There is no chance to work our way out of hell once we are there. We only get this life that we live now to accept God’s gift of salvation.
  6. There is only one way to get to heaven. John 14:6 says, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” There is no other way.

Luke 19:10 – To Seek and To Save

April 23 Luke 19 10 KJV

I love my GPS app that gets me to all my appointments. If I miss a turn, it simply reroutes me. It gives me confidence as I travel in new places. I remember the days of traveling when I’d pull up a Google map request with directions and print them out before going on my trip. On one occasion, someone neglected to inform Google maps that a high school had been build and the road was rerouted around the school. My directions wanted me to go straight, but straight in front of me was the school. Thankfully, with a little driving around, I found the road I needed to be on. But in those moments between staring down a school that was in my way and find the road I needed to be on, I felt lost. Lost. Unable to find one’s way. That’s what we are when we are sinners without Christ’s forgiveness. Lost. Unable to find our way to Christ. There is no way to get to Christ on our own.

Lost. Unable to find one’s way. That’s what we are when we are sinners without Christ’s forgiveness. Lost. Unable to find our way to Christ.
–click to tweet

Instead, He seeks us out and draws us to Him, inviting us to discover His grace, love and forgiveness. The whole reason Jesus came to earth was to seek and save those who are lost. Is He seeking you? Do you feel Him tugging at your heart to surrender your life to Him? He’s holding out His nail-scarred hand to you right now, just as you are – whatever that might look like. You can place your hand in His by simply taking these steps:

  • Admitting that you are a sinner who is lost and in need of a Savior. That’s the bad news. We are all sinners and the penalty for sin is death.
Romans 3:23. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 6:23. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
  • Believing that He is the only Son of God who died in your place paying your penalty for sin, was buried and rose again three days later defeating death, Hell, and the grave. The good news is that God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sin in our place. There is no sin too big for Him to forgive. You don’t have to get your life in order and then come to Jesus…come just as you are. He promised that if we put our trust in Him that we can have eternal life.
John 3:16.For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
John 6:40. For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
John 10:28-30. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish—ever! No one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”
  • Confessing that Jesus is Lord. When Jesus rose from the dead, he proved His victory over eternal death. God wants you to confess that Jesus is Lord of all and that He is your Savior.
Romans 10:9. If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Paul taught in Romans 6:23 that salvation is free gift. There is absolutely nothing we can do to earn it. It can’t be bought. It can’t be weighed as good deeds against bad deeds. Not a one of us can live a life good enough to get to heaven on our own. It is a gift of God and it’s ours simply by reaching out and accepting it. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” If you’re ready to accept that gift right now, simply pray to Him following the steps above and ask Jesus to be your Savior. If you do and are sincere, then welcome to the family of God.

Luke 17:6 – Genuine faith

April 19 Luke 17 6 NKJV

Genuine faith is powerful, even in small doses! In Bible days, the mustard seed was thought to be the smallest of seed. In contract, the mulberry tree has a deep, long-reaching root system that would give it life for many hundreds of years and make it very difficult to uproot and move. In Matthew 17:14-20, Jesus told his disciples that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed they could move mountains.

Faith is vital to the Christian life. Paul wrote, “For by grace are you saved” (Ephesians 2:8). In Hebrews 11:6, Paul wrote that it is impossible to please God without faith. Jesus used the very tiny mustard seed to contract the unmeasurable, omnipotent power of God and when it is let loose in the lives of believers who have genuine faith, God can do great things. As we see God working through our tiny bit of faith, our faith grows and spreads a deep root system, influencing everyone around us and making an eternal impact on God’s kingdom. Our faith also grows as we read and study God’s Word. Peter wrote that God has given us everything we need to grow our knowledge of Him, and it’s found in the Bible.

Whatever mountain stands in front of you, allow your faith to be the avenue through which God works to bring about His perfect plan.

God, thank you that you can do unmeasurable things with our little bit of faith. Help our faith to grow, creating a deep root system that reaches out to everyone around us.
