Luke 7:47. Forgiveness through the Eyes of the Sinner

March 31 Luke 7 47 NKJV

If you have ever experienced forgiveness from a friend or family member then you know what forgiveness feels like. You understand the peace that returns and the restoration of the relationship.  The more we wronged that person, the more grateful we are of the forgiveness they extended to us.

Every one of us sins and we are all in need of God’s forgiveness. Without His forgiveness, we are unable to find the peace our hearts long for. It doesn’t matter whether there is only one sin in our entire lifetime or a million. It doesn’t matter if our sins or just “little” sins or if there is a whole closet full of “big” sins. God doesn’t put quantity or size to our sin. One sin – of any size – and we become a sinner.  Yet, the more we recognize our own sinfulness and our need for a Savior, the more precious Jesus becomes to us and the more love we have for Him. The person with a closet full of big sins will understand God’s grace and forgiveness more than the person with just one little sin. As a result, the person with the “big” sins will, in return, demonstrate more love to the God who forgave him. For example, if two people stand before the same judge, one with a speeding ticket for two miles over the speed limit and the other guilty traffic homicide and both receive forgiveness for their crimes and released – who is likely to feel the most gratitude?

The woman in Luke 7 who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair and anointed his head with oil had come face to face with her own sinfulness. She knew the extent of every sin she had ever committed and knew she needed forgiveness. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus to dinner at his home had still to get passed his pious, ritualistic mentality to see his sinfulness. The woman’s actions demonstrated true repentance and because of her faith, she found forgiveness and salvation. As a result, she could “go in peace” (vs. 50).

Is there anything in your life today that you need to seek God’s forgiveness for? Do you long for peace and restoration of your relationship with Him? Ask Him to forgive you now.

God, thank you for your forgiveness and grace. Because of your forgiveness, we can live in peace with you. Help us to recognize quickly when sin creeps in and to seek your forgiveness once again.

Memorize and hide in your heart one memory verse each week in 2020. If you didn’t start the challenge at the beginning of the year, just jump in now and be sure to sign up to get our weekly Memory verse in your email so you don’t miss a week.

memory verse logoIn 2020 our emphasis is on revival for America with three key words: revive, renew, and redeem. You will begin to see the elements of our website and posts reflect this emphasis. We hope you’ll join us in praying for God to pour out the Holy Spirit with a mighty rushing wind of revival for our nation and around the world.

Our key verse for revival is 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.  For the past few  weeks, we have been focusing on repentance. This week, we look at the spiritual transformation that takes place when we surrender our heart to God.

This week’s memory verse:

Exodus 14:13-14

“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

Genesis 37:3 Favoritism and Dysfunctional Families

Jan 15 Genesis 37 3

A bride brought her new husband up to meet her grandmother at a family picnic. The old woman looked the young fellow over carefully and then said to him, “Young man, do you desire to have children?” He was a bit startled by her candid approach but finally replied, “Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I do.” She looked at him scornfully and then surveyed the very large clan of children gathered around half a dozen picnic tables and said, “Well, try to control it!”

Jacob had two wives and two concubines who together gave him thirteen children – twelve sons and a daughter. One wife and the two concubines were forced on him. But his heart belonged to Rachel. Joseph was Rachel’s son. His other wife, Leah (Rachel’s sister) gave him six sons and a daughter. The concubines gave him four sons (two each). Rachel would then go on to have the last son, Benjamin, but she died in childbirth.

Sometimes we look at the patriarchs of the Bible and put them up on a pedestal and forget that they are also humans…just like us. Jacob’s family was dysfunctional. As a result, jealousy between the two wives bred jealousy between the 12 sons. But yet, playing favorites is not new to Jacob. The Bible tells us that Issac loved Esau (Jacob’s brother) while Rebecca love Jacob. More often than not, we tend to parent how we were parented…and instead of learning what favoritism cost him and his brother, Jacob too chooses a favorite … the son of his old age…and the son of his beloved Rachel. When the sons of the four concubines got into trouble (Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher), Jacob treated them differently and unequally which stirred up hatred, resentment and jealousy. Reuben, the first born, was the natural heir, but was disqualified because of an illicit relationship with one of his father’s concubines (Gen. 35:22). Simeon and Levi were passed over because of their crime at Shechem (34:25-30). Judah was the fourth son in line to be heir and one might expect that he would be chosen, but Jacob chooses Joseph. The coat of many colors that Jacob made for Joseph, signified Joseph as Jacob’s chosen successor for clan leadership, especially since he was the first born of Rachel, the only woman Jacob had ever intended to marry. This might explain Judah’s active role in the selling of Joseph into slavery. As time goes by, the rivalry is passed down through their descendants and the two clans of Judah and Ephraim (Joseph’s son) struggle for supremacy and eventually ten of the tribes under the leadership of Ephraim would secede from the nation and create their own nation.

As parents we need to make sure that we treat all our children the same and refrain from choosing “favorites.” Every child needs to know the love of his/her parent and never feels compared to or unequal to a sibling. The consequences of favoritism not only breeds discontent in the home but is passed down from generation to generation.

Meditate and apply:

Will you commit to praying with us in 2020 that God will revive His people, renew our faith, and redeem our land? We feel such an urgency and desperation for revival. If God is moving your heart for revival, write your revival prayer in the comments along with your state or country.

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.

  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

983362: Pray Big: Learn to Pray Like an Apostle Pray Big: Learn to Pray Like an Apostle

By Alistair Begg / Good Book Company

So many of us struggle with prayer. Many books have been written on the subject and there’s a reason for that. Prayer comes hard to most of us, in most seasons. And when we do pray, we often don’t know what to say. What is it that my Father loves to hear about? What are the best things I could pray for my family, my church, and myself?

This short book by renowned Bible teacher Alistair Begg combines warmth, clarity, humor, and practicality as he examines Paul’s prayers for his friends in the church in Ephesus. Paul clearly enjoyed prayer, and was excited about it. He expected his Father in heaven to hear what he said, and to act in other people’s lives accordingly. The truths that underpin and shape his prayers will motivate us to pray and set us an example.

So be inspired by the Apostle Paul to pray bigger and better prayers as we look to our heavenly Father to do more than all we ask or imagine!

Memorize & Meditate

scripture memory graphicEach week we will post a scripture to challenge you to hide God’s Word in your heart. Commit it to memory, meditate on it and apply it to your life.

This week’s verse:

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

 Meditate and apply:

  1. God loved the entire world – regardless of race, every single person. It doesn’t matter what your past looks like or your present. We come to God just as we are – filthy and sinful. Isaiah 64:6 says: “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” All of us are sinners. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” But 1 John 1:7 tells us that the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.
  2. Because of His love for us, God allowed His one and only Son, Jesus, to pay our sin debt in our place. Our penalty for sin is death (Romans 6:23), but because Jesus died in our place, God’s gift to us is eternal life (Ephesians 2:8).
  3. Whosoever means – whoever – and that includes you.
  4. God does not want anyone to be lost and die without Him (2 Peter 3:8-10). He does not want anyone to spend eternity in hell. Hell was originally created for Satan and his followers as their penalty for their rebellion as angels in Heaven. In fact, the Bible tells us in 2 Peter 3:9 that God is “longsuffering toward us,” which means He is patient – but when death occurs, His patience is gone.
  5. Everlasting life. We all have an eternity waiting for us after death – either eternal life in Heaven or eternal damnation in hell. The choice is ours to make and we make it in this life. After death, it’s too late to decide. Hebrews 9:27 says: “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” According to this verse judgement comes after death with out Christ as Savior. We will only get one earthly lifetime to make our choice for or against Him. We are not going to be reincarnated back into another body to get several more chances to find and accept Jesus this side of heaven. We don’t get to have our loved ones still on earth pray us into heaven. There is no penance or “levels” of hell. There is no chance to work our way out of hell once we are there. We only get this life that we live now to accept God’s gift of salvation.
  6. There is only one way to get to heaven. John 14:6 says, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” There is no other way.
