Stress: A Spiritual Solution – Part 2

by Julia M. Bruce, MSPC, Mental Health Coach,
CEO, Wellspring Christian Ministries

A Spiritual Solution – God uses our stress to draw us closer to Him

Today, we are going to continue looking at how we can manage stress through a spiritual solution. So, another way that God uses stress, is to draw us closer to Him. When life is great and we are coasting along without any problems, we tend to become independent and self-reliant. A spiritual solution to stress recognizes that stress causes us to call on God, to seek Him, and find Him. Psalms 18:6 says, “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help.” Over and over in the Old Testament we see where the Israelites would stray away from God and then “when they turned to the Lord God of Israel in their distress and sought Him, He was found by them” (2 Chronicles 15:4, HCSB). Stress causes us to seek God, find Him, and therefore we draw closer to Him.

A Spiritual solution – Stress can be a result of God’s discipline

Stress can also be a way that God disciplines us. Hebrews 12:5-7 says, “And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly or faint when you are reproved by Him, for the Lord disciplines the one He loves and punishes every son He receives. Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?” (HCSB) So we need to examine if the stress we are experiencing is due to stepping out of God’s will or if we have unconfessed sin and could He be disciplining us as a result. We find a spiritual solution to stress, then, by confessing our sin and coming back into the perimeters of God’s will for our lives.

A Spiritual solution – God can use our stress to grow our faith and prepare us for His plans

God can work through the stress in our life as a way to strengthen our faith and prepare us for what He has planned for us in the near future. In 1 Peter 1:7, we learn that trials are brought into our lives “so that the genuineness of your faith – more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire – may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (HCSB) Our faith is like a muscle. The only way a muscle grows is through exercise. As exercises put stress on the muscle, it will grow. Stress is the exercise that helps our faith grow. Therefore, we find a spiritual solution to stress as we take time to pray and ask God how He might be working through the stress to help our faith grow and how He is preparing us for his perfect plan.

A Spiritual Solution – Recognize your strengths and gifts

Another spiritual solution to stress is to recognize the strengths and gifts God equipped you with to see you through this trial. When God called you to the ministry position to which you serve, He equipped you with every gift you needed to see the job through. Isaiah 40:10 says, “See, the Lord God comes with strength, and His power establishes His rule. His reward is with Him, and His gifts accompany Him.” Rest in His strength. Know that he rules over every difficult situation. Look to see how the strengths and gifts He gave you will help you solve the stressor you are dealing with.

In Romans 11:29, we find that God’s gifts are gracious and the calling he has given us is irrevocable. In 2 Timothy 3:17, we find that the man (or woman) of God is completed and equipped for every good work. It is the strengths and gifts God has given you that was completed and equipped you for the ministry assignment He has given you.

A Spiritual Solution – Rely on God when faced with stress

When we manage stress with a spiritual solution, we recognize that it is in the stressful, difficult moments that we learn to totally rely and depend on God. It is these moments that strengthens our faith. Use this time to deepen your faith and love for God. 1 Peter 1:7 says, “These [trials] have come so that your faith of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

Paul’s Spiritual solution

Paul experienced stress that caused Him to rely on God. In 2 Corinthians 1:8-11, he wrote, “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.”

A Spiritual solution relies on God, not self

As we learn to rely and depend on God, we can also remain steadfast and obedient to Him. 2 Corinthians 2:9 states, “The reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything.” We can choose to rely on ourselves and walk away from the calling of ministry or we can choose to rely on God and be obedient in everything He has called us to do.

A Spiritual Solution – Chose to respond to stress in a way that honors God

Remember that God created you with the ability to make choices and when stress comes calling, identify the choices you have and make choices that are positive, God-honoring, and healthy. Being able to make those choices begin with making sure we are not conforming ourselves to the world’s expectations, but that we are constantly being transformed by the renewing of mind so that we are able to discern what God says is good and pleasing to Him (Romans 12:2). Choose to honor Him. Colossians 3:17 tell us, “Whatever you do in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” It is very difficult to both stress and give thanks at the same time!

Pre-order now to receive a 50% discount! (Releasing December 2021)

You will get the complete downloadable self-care video-based course plus 10 group coaching sessions.

We know that ministry is hard! When you serve in ministry as staff or volunteer, you are on a spiritual battlefield 24/7. As you serve God, you fight for the Kingdom of God and our adversary is constantly attacking. He wants you to either lose your effectiveness in your ministry role or get you to quit. We must be sure we are reconnecting to the Vine (Jesus) so that we can refill, renew, and recharge. Then we can keep on pouring into others.

If you are feeling like you are losing the fight or struggling to stay in the fight, Jesus says to you, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31) Self-care is both Biblical and necessary, if you are going to stay in the fight and be effective in the Kingdom of God. Stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue are real weapons that the adversary uses against us.

Even if you do not serve in ministry, if you are a Christian, you too are in a spiritual battle. Every Christian fights the same adversary and our Biblical self-care principles are for every Christian.

What you get in this self-care course:

In Part 1 of this video-based course, you will learn about the spiritual dangers in ministry, discover if God is testing you or is Satan attacking you, understand that ministry is battlefield and how to be steadfast, immovable on the battlefield, learn how the devil uses his wiles and schemes against us, and remember how to use your Spiritual Armor. We will also breakdown stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue.

Part 2 is all about Preventing and Recovering from Burnout and Compassion Fatigue as we go through six areas that need self-care. In this part of the course we will provide you with practical ways that you can immediately begin practicing self-care. As you continue to serve God in whatever way He has called you, self-care is vital if you are not going to grow weary in doing good so you can reap at the proper time (Galatians 6:9).

Additionally, this packaged deal will provide 10 group coaching session where we will discuss the weekly assigned videos and do check-ins on where you are in each of the six areas of self-care that include: Spiritual, Sensory, Emotional, Social, Physical, and Intellectual.

Releasing in December 2021, this packaged deal will include the complete video-based course plus 10 group coaching sessions with the author, Julia Bruce. In the 10-week program you will complete weekly videos and assignments and then meet virtually for a group coaching session to help you apply self-care where you need it.

But wait! That’s not all! Check out this Bonus to the self-care course and coaching program.

BONUS: While this course and group coaching is not releasing until December 2021, if you’re purchasing this material, we know you need help now. So, if you purchase before the release date, we’ll place you in our new private Facebook membership page for free through the end of 2021. In January, this group will require a monthly subscription of $19.99. But it will be yours free through the end of year when you purchase the pre-release of the course and group coaching sessions.

The Path to Sin

Satan is constantly trying to trip us up and he doesn’t even play fair because he uses our own desires as bait to get us to sin. James tells us the five steps that lead us down the path to sin in James 1:14-15, “But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” This download helps you identify your desires so that you can better recognize when Satan is baiting you and you can avoid falling into sin. When used along with prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to identify the desires that Satan baits you with, you can then ask the Holy Spirit to help you not become a victim to the bait of your desires. Deliverance in Distress

Distress and Stressful Times

I don’t think anyone would argue that that we are living in a time of distress. In fact, it has mostly been a distressing couple of years. We expect distress, difficult times and stressful times. Jesus even told us in John 16:33 that we will have suffering in this world. It certainly feels like our nation and our world is caught in a downward spiral with a very short fuse leading to a powder keg ready to explode. Packed up tight inside that powder key are deteriorating moral values, escalating divorce rates, abortion, pornography, addictions, abuse, violence, terrorist threats and attacks, drive-by shootings, homosexuality, selfishness, greed, racial tensions, a pandemic, economic tensions…and its election year.

Something’s Got to Change

Most of us would agree that something has got to change. The disciples were in a situation where they needed for something to change and quickly or they would die. Out in a boat, a storm came up and it was tossing the boat around enough that these seasoned fishermen were not just distressed – they were afraid. I sometimes wonder how long they stayed in the stormed tossed seas experiencing distress and fear before they remembered that Jesus – the creator of the world – the son of God was in the boat with them. Eventually they must have remembered because they went looking for him and found him — asleep.

I’m thinking that regardless of how scary or bad the storm was if Jesus was in the boat, that was probably the safest place to be. But they wake Him up and say, “Lord! Save us! Don’t you care what’s happening to us? We’re about to die in this storm.” I can almost see Jesus shaking his head because they just don’t get it. So He gets up and looks out at the storm and looks back at his disciples. To the disciples He said, “Oh ye of little faith, why are you afraid?” Then he looks back at the storm and He rebukes the wind and the waves and instantly there was peace. The disciples responded with both awe and fear, saying, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

Our Distress Obeys and Bows down to the King of Kings.

My friend, all those things in our “storm” that cause us to experience distress – they all obey and bow down to the King of kings, too. COVID is not more powerful than God. The racial division we are experiencing is not more powerful than God. He can use them as judgment or he can use them as a “wake up call” to bring us back to Him. He can also use them to destroy us completely. But He can also say, “Enough! Peace!” And we will know peace once again. But I believe that before there is peace, mankind’s hearts will need to repent and turn back to God.

Noah knew distress

In Matthew 24:37 Jesus told us, “As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.” What were the days of Noah like? I’m glad you asked! Genesis 6:5 tells us what the world was like in Noah’s day that caused God to flood the earth, wiping out all of creation except for those in the ark. “God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Do you think God could say the same about our world today? Our value systems have been corrupted and Satan has taken full advantage of technology to destroy morals, values, and families. He’s used modern technology as his arsenal against us to teach violence and breed disunity. The result: Our minds have become a polluted cesspool of little more than thoughts and imaginations that are continually evil. Yes! Our world is in a constant state of turmoil and distress because of sin.

Ruth Graham Lotz once said, “If God doesn’t judge America, He will need to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah!” I’d like to extend that and say that if God doesn’t judge the world, He will need to apologize to everyone that died in the flood of Noah’s day.

Ruth Graham Lotz once said, “If God doesn’t judge America, He will need to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah!” I’d like to extend that and say that if God doesn’t judge the world, He will need to apologize to everyone lost in the flood.

The People of Noah’s Day were living life as “Business as usual.”

It is interesting the Jesus pointed out that the people of Noah’s day were “eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage.” Jesus wasn’t per say saying these were the reasons the flood occurred, but that they were living life as “business as usual.” They were oblivious that judgement was coming. In fact, they ridiculed Noah as he built the ark. They had no idea that “business as usual” was about to come to an end and “normal” would begin again with Noah and his sons. It was only when the first drop of rain fell from the sky that they realized they were in trouble.

Is our Distress God’s Judgement?

I am convinced that people today fail to realize just how ripe our world is for God’s judgement. Could COVID-19 be the start of that? We are not going to debate that, but it could certainly be a possibility. And while we certainly need to follow our government’s instructions to try to end the pandemic, if this is God’s judgement it will end when He says it will end – and that may very well depend on the people of God humbling themselves, praying, seeking God’s face, and repenting of their complacency in their spiritual growth and in spreading the gospel.

In fact, there will be some who read this, roll their eyes, and laugh because while people will acknowledge the existence of God, they live as if He doesn’t exist. They flaunt His grace in front of His face and have no fear of a holy and righteous God. But, folks, God’s not dead. He’s still on His throne. And I’m sure He has notice that our world is just as bad as the days of Noah – if not worse.

People fail to realize just how ripe our world is for God’s judgement. In fact, many will say God exists, but they live as if He doesn’t. There is no fear of a holy, righteous God. But God is not dead. He’s still on His throne. He has notice that our world is just as bad as the days of Noah – if not worse.

King David experienced distress

David also knew distress. After being anointed by Samuel to be the next king because God rejected Saul as king, Saul was still on the throne. He didn’t say, “Well, my time is up. Time for the next king.” No he became jealous of David, hunted him down and tried to kill him – multiple times. Psalm 18 reflects David’s praise following all of his enemies being defeated. He says in verse 6, “I called to the Lord in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears.”

We need to call out to God in our distress

We too can call to the Lord in our distress. In fact, we NEED to call out to God. He is our only hope and help. David wrote in Psalm 121, “Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” There is no other place to go for help for what distresses our world, but God. Why? Because the source of our distress is sin and the source of sin is Satan. The battle is a spiritual one and the only way to fight spiritual battles is on our knees.

God’s conditions to Him hearing our cries of distress

David also said in Psalm 18:6 that God heard His cry. 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us that if we want to see our land healed, there are conditions we must meet for God to hear us and forgive us. This verse says, “If my people who are called by my name, [that’s us, Christians!] will humble themselves, pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land.”

What does our world need?

So what does our world need? We need to cry out to God, but from a humble heart that is seeking His presence as a deer longs for water in a hot, dry desert. We need to cry out to God with a repentant heart that we have become complacent in the things of God – in our love and devotion to Him, in our time in His Word and prayer, in our view of the Holy Spirit, in our view of God, in spreading the gospel to the lost, and in living a God-honoring lifestyle. And we need to cry out to God through fasting as we intercede on behalf of our nation for God to forgive our national sin of turning away from Him.

Instead of the homosexual society boldly “coming out of the closet” we need Godly parents who will go into the prayer closet and pray for their children. We need parents who will pray for our broken school system. We need neighborhoods coming together to pray for their communities, abortion clinics to close, and to put prayer back in school. America needs godly men and women filling our government and political offices. And we need for the Holy Spirit to open the eyes of God’s people and burden them for the state of our nation and our world.

We need a spiritual revival to sweep across our land. Without it, judgement IS coming just as it did for the people in Noah’s day. It won’t be by flood, because God promised to never destroy the entire earth by a flood again. But it doesn’t say anything about destroying it via another method. COVID could certainly be an option, should God use this disease as a judgement on our world.

Cry out to God

As we face the conditions of the world today, let us cry out to God and ask Him to draw our hearts to Him. Let us pray–as God’s people–to have a real heart and concern for our families and for our nation–for a spiritual revival in our land. As we see the deteriorating condition of the world around us, it should be a wake-up call for us to live godly, righteous, holy lives, placing our minds, hearts and priorities on eternal values.

God’s promises

We don’t know what the rest of this year may hold for us–joys, sorrows, victories or defeats. But we do know that the Lord has promised to be with us, and He’s promised to help us. In the second half of John 16:33 Jesus said, “Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” He has promised to guide us. And the Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 46:1-3: “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with its turmoil” we do not need to fear. So with this reminder, let us commit our ways to Him, trusting that He will bring to pass His perfect will in our lives.

Book with us now.

Julia is CEO of Wellspring Christian Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people and couples develop a passionate relationship with God. A public speaker, conference trainer, event planner, and blog writer, Julia is a two-time graduate from Grand Canyon University with a bachelor in Psychology and a masters in Professional Counseling. Saved as a child and raised in church and in a Christian home and private Christian School as a Pastor’s kid, Julia has taught Sunday school, led music, played the piano, served as Children’s Director, and engaged her gifts in many other areas of church life. Previously employed with the Florida Baptist Convention, Julia organized events and led conferences for church ministry assistants.

Julia enjoys sharing her journey as a growing Christian with others looking for a deeper connection with God. Through Bible study and her own life experiences, God has given Julia a passion to help couples understand God’s design for marriage while they learn to place God first in their marriage, cultivate meaningful relationships, build intimacy, and address the tougher issues that come in every marriage so that they can experience a marriage that honors and glorifies God. Julia also loves mentoring, teaching, and working with women to help them learn to live as Godly women.

With her history and experience growing up in both small and large churches, Julia enjoys bringing top level quality events to churches of all sizes. Her father largely pastored small churches and therefore she understands that these vital parts of the believing community need to be good stewards of the resources God provides them with. This knowledge inspires her passion for being available with a fresh perspective for those who want to provide their congregations with meaningful spiritual growth opportunities.
