A Masterpiece Created in His Image

What does it mean to be made in the image of God?

Have you ever stopped and thought about what it means to be made in the image of God? Being made in His image comes with responsibility because we portray who God is and what He is like to those we interact with every moment of every day. We were created to be a graphic image of our God, the Creator. We are a formal, visible, and understandable representation of who God is and what He is really like.

However, because of sin, that image has become distorted. Because of sin, we are not as fully like God as we were before the fall of man. Our sin has caused the image of God’s moral purity to be lost and we no longer reflect God’s holiness. Additionally, the falsehood and lies of Satan and our misunderstandings has distorted the image of God’s intellect. Our speech no longer continually glorifies God. And selfishness rules our relationships rather than then God’s love.

God’s Masterpiece

Man is God’ masterpiece in the creation story. In each day of the creation story, we find that God makes an announcement (“God said”) followed by a command (“let there be…”). We then find a descriptive report of what was created. Then as God looks over His creation and evaluates it, he responds with “it was good.” Lastly the day closes out telling which day of creation was completed. On day 1, God created light and dark. In day 2, the sea and sky. In Day 3, dry land appears along with fruit and vegetation. Day 4: sun, moon, and stars. On day 5: creatures of the air and water. Day 6: Creatures of the land – the animals and man. However, we a slight difference when God steps back to analyze his creation of man.

It was very good

Can you picture each day of creation? God, much like an artist, creates and then He steps back to examine it. While an artist might go back and tweak or fix a few mistakes, there was no need for God to adjust anything He made. Every single thing was made in perfection and each day at the end of the day, God would step back and say, “It is good.” But when God created man, He created him in his own image and He breathed life into him giving him not just a body made from clay but an eternal soul that will live forever. As God stepped back to examine his creation of man, He pronounced His work as “very good.”

Created in His Image means we have a unique relationship with Him

Because we are created in His image we share a relationship with Him that no other created creature has and we are the only creation that was given an eternal soul. As such we need to remember every moment of every day, wherever we are and with whomever we are interacting with that we bear His image to the rest of the world.

When we interact with others, do we reflect His glory? Does God’s image shine through in how you relate to an overbearing boss, an endless amount of laundry and dishes, whining children, your spouse, lazy employees, slow drive-thru attendees? Does your checkbook reflect His glory? What about your marriage? Does it reflect His glory? Does your worship at church reflect His glory? What about when you face trails or unprecedented grief? What about in the moments of devastating loss? Do others still see the glory of God because you are His image-bearer?

If we reflected His Glory, how would our world be different?

If Christians in our nation truly reflected the glory of God and saw themselves and God’s image-bearers, how would our nation be different?

Spend sometime alone with the Holy Spirit and prayerfully ask Him to show you the areas that do not reflect God’s glory, confess it and ask Him to show you opportunities to be God’s image-bearer in every area of your life.

Genesis 1:1. Created in His Image

Genesis 1 1

Have you ever stopped and thought about what it means to be made in the image of God? Being made in His image comes with responsibility because we portray who God is and what He is like to those we interact with every moment of every day.

Man is God’ masterpiece in the creation story. In each day of the creation story, we find that God makes an announcement (“God said”) followed by a command (“let there be…”). What about in the moments of devastating loss? Do others still see the glory of God because you are His image-bearer?

In 2020, we are focusing on praying for revival in America, so let me ask: “If Christians in our nation truly reflected the glory of God and saw themselves and God’s image-bearers, how would our nation be different?

Spend sometime alone with the Holy Spirit and prayerfully ask Him to show you the areas that do not reflect God’s glory, confess it and ask Him to show you opportunities to be God’s image-bearer in every area of your life.

This event helps couples understand why the daily activities found in the book will equip them to build a stronger marriage and the book provides them with 365 intentional activities to take what they learn at the event and apply it on a daily basis. Through the event, couples will discover the Biblical “why” behind the categories of activities found in the book and the “how” these activities are important to building a stronger marriage. Focus points of the event includes :

  • How memorizing scripture together and studying God’s Word together as they study, meditate and apply scriptures related to marriage and life issues will help them develop marriages that honor God.
  • Why utilizing fun conversation starters that spark meaningful conversations will keep interest alive as they continually learn new things about each other.
  • Why keeping romance alive is essential to intimacy and connectivity.
  • How making memories and working together builds relationship investment bonds and how these investment bonds can become the knots that keeps them together through the tough times.
  • How they can understand what they are or are not contributing to the marriage as well as how they might be contributing to problems or potential problems within the relationship through the use of targeted, intentional personal reflections
  • Why it is important that couples never stop dating and how group dates with Christian friends can be both an encouragement and accountability to their own relationship.

During the event, couples will be given an activity from each focus point to do together, making this event an interactive, fun, and engaging event with practical, hands-on learning. Unlike other couple events that are over when the event ends, couples who attend the GLMW event will be able to apply what they learn when utilizing the book on a daily basis for a year. Since the book is not dated, couples are able to reuse the activities year after year to continue being intentional in strengthening their relationship with each other and with God as they strive to live out God’s design for marriage every day.

776585: Letters to the Church Letters to the Church

By Francis Chan / David C Cook

If God had it His way, what would our churches look like?

In his most powerful book yet, Pastor Francis Chan digs deep into biblical truths, reflections on his own failures and dreams, and stories of ordinary people God is using to change the world.

As Chan says, “We’ve strayed so far from what God calls Church. We all know it. We know that what we’re experiencing is radically different from the Church in Scripture. For decades, church leaders like myself have lost sight of the inherent mystery of the Church. We have trained people sitting in the pews to become addicted to lesser things. It’s time for that to change.”

When Jesus returns, will He find us caring for His Bride-even more than for our own lives? Letters to the Church reminds us of how powerful, how glorious the Church once was … and calls us to once again be the Church God intended us to be.

Bonus Videos: The 4 videos from Francis Chan’s BASIC Study series (Fellowship, Communion, Teaching, Prayer) are included here as additional material for you to feel free to use in your church. They are not part of the “Letters to the Church” series.

They will address questions such as “Will everyone be saved?” and “Does God Get What He Wants in the End?” as well as reviewing in depth, everything Jesus said about Hell. Chan and Sprinkle lay all the evidence on the table and present all the facts from Scripture, so that people can decide what to believe for themselves.

291119: Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It. Double Blessing: How to Get It. How to Give It.

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

New York Times bestselling author and pastor Mark Batterson believes the key to radically increasing your faith, joy, and abundance can be found in these three words:

Flip the blessing.

His discovery started with a simple experiment. Whenever he received a blessing, he would give a similar blessing away. If someone paid him a compliment or gave him a gift or went out of their way to help him, he would return the favor by doing something similar for someone else.

We flip the blessing by blessing others in the way God has blessed us. That’s how the blessing becomes a double blessing. It turns giving into a game–one we can’t win because God will always outgive us! It’s an ancient truth found within the Abrahamic covenant: “I will bless you…and you will be a blessing.”

In other words, we are blessed to bless. In a day and age where the idea of blessing has been reduced to a hashtag (#blessed), Batteron challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing. Don’t settle for half of what God offers. Discover how you can both get it and give it.

291089: Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God

By Mark Batterson / Multnomah

God still speaks today. His voice and guidance wasn’t only for the saints and prophets of old, but for followers of Jesus now. In Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God, author and pastor Mark Batterson shares seven ways that God communicates with His followers, if they’ll stop to listen. Through the tools of Scripture, Doors, Dreams, People, Promptings, and Pain, God weaves divine messages of love, encouragement and insight, into our lives every day. Hardcover.

Colossians 1:16. Created For Him

by Julia Bruce

09 Colossians 1 16

We know that in Genesis 1:1, the Bible opens up saying, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” My son memorized this verse in kindergarten. It is probably a verse every child learns, if they attend church. However, over in Colossians 1:16, we learn something else about the creation of the heavens and the earth. In this verse, Paul wrote to the church of Colossae, telling them that Christ is Lord of creation. He wrote, “For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions, or rulers or authorities – all things have been created through Him and for Him.” Those last two words give us the why of creation…for Him. The all-powerful God of creation created the entire universe and every living thing, including you and me…for Him! The sad thing is that we tend to live our lives as if God is created for us…to do what we want him to (click to tweet) …to pour out his blessing on us….to take care of our every need….to save us from all the messes we get ourselves into. We treat Him like a genie in a bottle who will grant our every wish and we only call Him out when there is something He can do for us.

God doesn’t need us…not at all. God is not, will not, nor has He ever been lonely. Before he ever created us or the angels he had God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. When He chose to create us, the Bible records God saying, “Let us make man in our own image. (Genesis 1:26). Before creating us, God had all the angels in heaven worshiping him. In 09 Great I AMRevelation 19:6 the Apostle John wrote, “Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.” The prophet Nehemiah wrote, “You alone are the Lord. You have made the heavens, the heaven of heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them and the heavenly host bows down before You.”  Paul wrote over in Acts 17: 24-25, “The God who made the world and everything in it…is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything.” He did not need to satisfy an ego craving to be worshiped. He has no low-self-esteem issue. He is totally secure in who he is. He is the I AM. (Click to tweet)

So if God doesn’t need us, then why did He bother creating us and why does He keep pursing us with an everlasting love instead of destroying us because of our sinful nature? It’s a question that has been asked countless of times throughout the ages. In fact, King David wrote in Psalm 8:3-4, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers…what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

09 cttEven though he doesn’t need us, the simple truth is he chose to create us…for no other reason than out of Love. God tells us, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3). Because he is omniscient (all-knowing, 1 John 3:20), He knew before He ever created us that we would sin and our sin would cause Him to send Jesus to die for our sins. Titus 1:2 tells us that our hope of eternal life was promised by God before time began. Yet He created us anyway…and loves us with an everlasting love. A love so great that it cost His only Son His life just so God in all of his holiness could have a relationship with us.

Because of His great love for us, we should have a desire to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Because we have been loved with an everlasting love, even in our sinful state, we should be more than willing to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:30) As a result of God’s infinite love, grace and mercy toward us, we should recognize that “we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus” (Ephesian 2:10) and that we were created “to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). However, it isn’t “good works” that get us in to heaven. Paul wrote, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift – not from works, so that no one can boast.” The good works is a result of our faith lived out as we surrender our lives to God and His plans for us. God gives us a choice to accept Him by faith. He longs for everyone to come to Him by faith, repent of their sins, and surrender their lives to him. In 2 Peter 3:9, we read, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” Yet, the choice is ours to make. We choose to accept Him or reject Him.

So while God may not need any one of us, we certainly need Him. We are dependent on Him and as we trust in his promises, we can know He has a perfect and specific plan for each one of us…plans that are for our absolute best…plans that will give us a hope and future (Jeremiah 29:11). If you have not already trusted Christ as Savior, would you be willing to surrender your life to Him right now and begin an exciting relationship with the God of creation who chose to create you and to love you with an everlasting love? If you have already made that decision and given your heart to Christ, do you need to cry out like the Psalmist and say, “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” (Psalm 85:6) Do you need to humble yourself before God and pray and seek His face and turn from your wicked ways, asking God to forgive you? (2 Chronicles 7:14) Maybe you’re still searching for God’s purpose for your life. Colossians 1:16 answers that question. You were created for Him. Maybe you just need to take a moment and praise him for His everlasting love towards you and worship Him.

We all know ourselves better than any other human being knows us and God knows us even better. I stand amazed in the presence of God, knowing all my own personal faults, mistakes, and sin and wonder how He could love me…with an everlasting love… a sinner condemned and unclean yet chose to create me anyway…even though I would be the cause of Him needing to send Jesus to die for me. He did the same for you.

Psalm 119:73. Give Me Understanding

AUg 22 Psalm 119 73

Which verse in the Bible – or maybe it’s an entire book – do you find difficult to understand? What parts of the Bible do you feel you have to wade through every word trying figure out exactly what’s being said?

The reality is that there are some things that our human minds simply cannot grasp – such as the true grandeur of heaven – until we pass from this life and into eternity and we are able to see things as God sees them. But the Bible is God’s letter to us and his instructions for how to live. He wants us to understand it.

The good news is that because God is the one that created us, he understands the limitations of our understanding. So when we get frustrated with trying to understand something in the Bible, we can first remember that God is our creator and that He already understands that we are struggling. The same God that fashioned and created us with His own hands, paying attention to every minute little detail even to the point of every human being having different fingerprints, is the same God who understands our weaknesses and frailties. (click to tweet)

But God did not leave us alone to figure things out. At the moment we became a Christian, the Holy Spirit moved in and took up residence within us. Part of the job of the Holy Spirit is to help us understand the Bible. In Psalm 119:73, the psalmist is asking God to give him understanding so he could learn God’s commandments. In essence, he is saying, “God you are the one you made me, now help me understand.” Any time we open God’s Word, we should begin with a prayer before reading the first word – a prayer asking the Holy Spirit to help us understand. 1 John 2:27 says, “The anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you don’t need anyone to teach you. Instead, His anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as He has taught you, remain in Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:10 tell us, “Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” So when you are having a difficult time understanding the Bible, stop where you are and ask the Holy Spirit to help you.

Aug 22 cttAnother element to understanding God’s Word is that we must have a heart that is willing to do whatever God is saying to us. We don’t just read it so we can check the box on our daily Bible reading plan. We should be reading with the expectation that God will reveal something new to us – whether that is something about His character, the way He expects us to live as His children, or He uses His Word to convict us of sin. Whatever He reveals, the purpose is to make us more and more like Christ and to grow us as Christians as He prepares us to do His will. James 1:22 tells us, “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” John 7:17 says, “If anyone wants to do His will, he will understand whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own.” So be sure you are willing to do whatever God might reveal to you as you are asking the Holy Spirit to help you understand.

We also have to be willing to give up our own ideas. In Isaiah 53:6, we find that “we have all turned to our own way.” We can’t take a single verse out of the Bible and make is say what we want it to say to fit what we want to do. Proverbs 16:25 teaches, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Satan is called the “deceiver” in the Bible. From the very beginning of the Bible we find Satan deceiving Eve and he continues to deceive all the way through to Revelation. 2 Corinthians 11:14 says, “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” And in Revelation 12:9, the Bible tells us what will happen to Satan: “The great dragon was hurled down – that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.” Satan knows that because you have been saved, that you do not belong to him. But if he can trip you up so that you don’t understand the Bible, then you may not live the victorious life God intends for you or perhaps it will keep you from winning someone else to Christ. He wants to deceive us so that we do not have a good understanding of the Bible. Rather than bringing our own ideas to the table when we open God’s Word, we should have a desire to understand God’s Word His way and depend on Him to reveal it to us.

If we expect to truly understand God’s Word, we can’t just sit down and read it – we haveAug 22 ctt2 to study it. You might say, I go to church on Sunday and listen to the preacher and I’m part of a small group too. But how do you know if what they are teaching is Biblical truth if you are not studying it for yourself? 2 Timothy 2:15 teaches, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of the truth.” If you want to truly understand the Bible, you have to study it in depth so that you can understand it accurately. Don’t just depend on your pastor to do the study work. Study it for yourself.

As we are studying God’s Word, we need to compare spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:13). In other words we use the Bible to interpret the Bible. Let’s say you wanted to put a complex puzzle together or a modeled car. With all the pieces lying around you, how do you know what the finished product is supposed to look like? You look at the picture on the box. Studying God’s Word is much like that. When we come to a part we don’t understand we need to take the main topic of what we are studying and search the entire Bible for everything it has to say about that topic. There are many online helps for this. One of the easiest ways to see verses all on a single topic is to go to openbible.info. The search bar will say, “What does the Bible say about” and you type in the topic. The website will pull up all the verses that pertain to that topic. You can then begin to study each verse in it’s own scriptural context. We can then get a full picture about what God has to say on the topic you are studying.

Sometimes, we just need a sounding board to so we can process the thoughts that are revealed as we study. So we can make and appointment with our pastors or another Godly saint more spiritually mature than us and talk with them about what we are studying. God can use these people to help us connect all the dots so that we can understand what He is saying to us. Again, we should not just rely on their understanding. We have to do our own study work.

There are many Bible study tools available to help us. Concordances, Bible dictionaries, commentaries and reliable online study resources such as Biblegateway.com, Logos or GotQuestions.com. But these are tools to guide us. They cannot replace the hard work of studying the Bible for ourselves and they cannot be our sole source of truth. Only God can be our source for truth. Nor can Bible study tools be a substitute for the Holy Spirit’s role in guiding us to understanding.

We need to follow the teaching in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. Understanding God’s Word requires us to trust God with all that we are, to set aside our own biased and faulty thinking as we acknowledge God and His truth. Then he will direct our paths and bring the understanding He wants to reveal to us. (Click to tweet)

Lastly, remember that God’s Word is “living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Because it is living, each time we come to study it, we can learn something new from it. So never think you’ve reached the point of fully understanding God’s Word. As we move through life and face different problems or seasons of life, God will reveal to us just what we need for that moment – then in the next moment, He will show us something new.

So, if you find yourself praying like the psalmist, “Give me understanding” remember:

  1. Because God is our creator, He understands the limitations of our human minds.
  2. God didn’t leave us on our own to figure it out – He gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth.
  3. We must have the heart to do His will as He reveals His truth to us.
  4. We must be willing to give up our ideas and trade them for understanding it God’s way
  5. We must be willing to study it – in depth – not just read it and we need to study it for ourselves rather than depend on what someone else is saying.
  6. When trying to understand God’s Word we must compare spiritual things with spiritual by seeing what the entire Bible has to say on a topic rather than a single verse.
  7. We can discuss what we are studying with spiritually mature Christians who can help us process our thoughts – but we should not depend on them to give us the answer
  8. We can utilize Bible study tools to help guide our study, but they should never replace the hard work of study or work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and they should not be our sole source of truth – only God can be our source of truth.
  9. We need to trust God to bring us to the understanding He wants for us rather than leaning on our own understanding.
  10. Remember that God’s Word is living and active. We can never stop studying His Word for each time we study it, he will reveal something new.
